Local woman, Melissa Jebson has recently returned home from Government House, the proud owner of a Queens Service Medal. Melissa was named in the New Year’s Honours’ List on December 30th, 2017, as a recipient of a Queens Service Medal in recognition of her voluntary service to agriculture and the community. Melissa admits to not only feeling honoured to be the recipient of such an award, she added that she also felt humbled by it too. She was given the option to attend a ceremony at Government House, Wellington (mid May), Auckland (early May) or Christchurch (in October). The choice was easy for Melissa, who chose to attend th e Gov er nm e nt H o us e ceremony, having been there before and always wanted to go back. “Last time I was there was as a member of the New Zealand National Youth Choir. At that time it was for a farewell concert before the first ever overseas tour in 1982,” Melissa explained. The Investiture Ceremony, took place on, Wednesday, May 16th, with the ceremony being an all women event. “It was an amazing occasion, as the ceremony was an all-women affair in commemoration of the 125th Women’s Suffrage celebrations,” Melissa explained. Melissa reported that the Governor-General of New Zealand The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy said that she felt in awe of the achievements the sixteen women in this ceremony had achieved. So much so that she told her husband that he would look out of place in the commemorative photo that was taken following the ceremony and asked him to sit it out.

Darfield Senior Citizens are a very social group who meet once a month for much enjoyed outings and get-togethers. Club members, both men and women, range in age from 65 to 90 plus and the modest annual fee of $10 is waived for those over ninety as, in a lovely gesture, they are admitted as honorary members. Club events and outings generally attract over forty members in attendance. The Club’s committee of: Loraine Stuart (President), Elly May (Secretary/Treasurer), Elza Stuart, Stuart Ngaire Buck, Buck Jenny BallochBalloch-Green, Green Rodney Balloch, Balloch Norma Duncan, Duncan Stuart Lamont and Marlene Murray have arranged a varied programme

for those attending in 2018. In June members can enjoy a midwinter luncheon, a speaker has been contacted for the July meeting, while August involves mini-golf and lunch in town. Add to this movies, various lunches out and a local speaker or two and it’s a guaranteed way for members to get out of the house and enjoy the company of other ‘seniors’. “If we have a speaker we meet in the Recreation Centre on the third Friday of the month in the afternoon,” said Club Secretary/ Treasurer Elly May. “Bus trips usually leave in the morning, and we also meet at the Recreation Centre. We try to vary speakers and events, hoping to cater for different interests.” Last Friday the Darfield Senior Citizens’ Club held a fashion parade which was pronounced as having gone extremely well,

and to have been a lot of fun. The clothes and the compering were courtesy of Rosalie Mason of Darfield’s Mason’s Drapery (which is now located in Horndon Mews - the block of shops created from the old library on McMillan Street). “Rosalie was amazing,” Elly said. “She organised and presented a range of lovely garments from her store for the four models (Mary Mary Worgan, Worgan Judy Clinton, Elly May and Marlene Murray) from the Club to display and we appreciated the time, effort and expertise she brought to the event. “More than forty people attended and after the parade we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea, proved by the committee,” Elly added. Anyone interested in joining the group should contact a committee member.

Last Saturday 270 riders on tiny 50cc scooters set off from Christchurch and made their way over alpine passes to the West Coast. The event organised by Jayne and Mike Rattray was a fundraiser for the Cancer Society and after this, the sixth Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari, over one million dollars has been raised in total for the charity. Local Kirwee rider Paul Washington was among the scooter-ists dressed in his signature Santa suit (in memory of his six year old son who died 25 years ago from a brain tumour, close to Christmastime). When the News (who were spectating) commented that they saw a few Santa’s on scooters, Paul laughingly replied, “there is only one Santa, the others are all imposters! “It was a fantastic day starting with a nice morning in Christchurch, and a few laps of Ruapuna Motor Sports Park - a few scooters didn’t make it through this stage and broke down,” Paul commented. “Some could be repaired, but others were just loaded onto trailers, and the riders became spectators for the day. “We travelled up the Old West Coast Road, but by the time we got level with Kirwee, the wind was getting up, which proved a bit of a handful for some of the scooters. Many of the riders had never been on the open road before on scooters. Our first stop was at Sheffield for a pie and I believe they served up over 400 of them!” A combination of the wind and Porter’s Pass proved too much for many of the scooters Paul commented, “many couldn’t make it and had to get off and push up the Pass. My little scooter performed well and got to the top with no problems, although a bit slower than past years. “Lunch at Arthur’s Pass was provided by the Rapid Relief Team who did extremely well to provide 400 burgers in an hour and of course refuelling either at, or before, Arthur’s was a necessity. “Rain was now starting to fall and with a very cold wind, it was time to put on another layer of wet weather gear, the Santa Suit just wasn’t cutting it! Not

far past Otira, the rain really started to come down and the cold was enough to fog up helmet visors too. The stop at Kumara was shortened because of the torrential downpour and indeed the racecourse was so flooded it was difficult to find a park away from the water. “Heading into Hokitika, the rain began to ease and there were cars loaded with people cheering us on. “What a day, full of all sorts of challenges and nothing really

being simple. We were all very tired and sore from sitting on these wee bikes for over six hours riding. We were also cold and wet and feeling pretty miserable, but elated to have got through the challenge. All the misery was soon forgotten when we arrived at Hokitika to a wonderful reception by the locals.” Collectively, the 270 scooter riders raised over $320,000 for the Cancer Society. This far exceeded the original target of

$211,000 which would have meant over the six Safaris, $1million had been raised. The event has now raised around $1,100,000 over the six events. “I cant wait for the next one in 2020,” Paul concluded. “Another Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari complete and what a

As part of the development of the Kirwee Recreational Reserve the committee, in conjunction with the Kirwee Township committee, are looking to enhance the Anzac Lane walkway which will form an integral part of the overall Reserve re-development. The current walkway has already been widened and the existing large oak trees, which have historical significance, will soon be part of an area more accessible to the public a spokesperson reported. While the plaque honouring fallen heroes is central to the entranceway off Hoskyns Road, the joint committees have undertaken to plant a new combined section of Turkish and English Oaks. This will include a new plaque with the names of the fallen from the local area. The committees are seeking these names from the RSA and welcome any contact with people who have details of locally known people who fought and lost their lives across all conflicts. Planting of the new trees will take place at the beginning of June and all are welcome to assist. The Reserve committee feel it would be especially poignant to have those with past losses attend and plant a tree for their respective families.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in New Zealand (and the most underfunded). The most recent estimate of autism prevalence in New Zealand has been identified as 1 in 58 children on the spectrum. To put this into perspective that equates to the entire population of the Otago region, and is growing (by comparison, this is more children than are affected by, childhood cancer, diabetes, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy or Down syndrome, combined). Autism New Zealand are passionate about raising awareness and understanding about autism and provide support, information and training to the 68,000 New Zealanders on the autism spectrum, along with their whānau, teachers, employers and other community members. In a recent article in the Malvern News it was mentioned that young, local, athlete Nathan Carter was on the Autism spectrum; his mum Bridget is an educator with Autism New Zealand and works toward assisting those on the spectrum reach their full potential. ASD affects the way the brain receives, processes and responds to information. It can have an impact on: readiness to learn, communication, social interaction, thinking, and sensory regulation. ASD is truly a spectrum, where each student will experience their own unique range of

challenges and strengths. People with ASD range from needing significant help with all day-to-day tasks, to those working and living independent lives. Every learning situation and every student is different and this will also vary depending on their school, cultural and family influences. The strengths of students with ASD may include: Visual thinking and learning, excellent memory for facts and figures, specialised areas of interest and knowledge, reliability and honesty, ability to follow rules and regulations; while the challenges may include: Sensory regulation, verbal communication, abstract thinking, social interaction, coping with change. As a teacher of students with ASD, Bridget is aware she needs to create a supportive learning environment and encourage reflective thought and action. She also attempts to facilitate shared learning, provide sufficient opportunities to learn and make connections to prior learning and experience. An insightful comment from someone with ASD:

“It is common for me and other people with autism to be unable to say the words to describe what is bothering us. It’s also hard for us to figure out that other people don’t experience the world the same way we do …”

Students from around the Malvern area recently took part in the global anti-bullying campaign Pink Shirt Day, which was held on Friday, May 18th. Over 1,000 schools and 850 workplaces around New Zealand signed up to participate in the day. Schools across the Nation were also encouraged to participate in Bullying-free New Zealand Week, which ran from May 14th to 18th in the lead up to Pink Shirt Day. Darfield High School embraced the bully-free week offering a range of activities for students to join in with. This included an anonymous appreciation day

where students wrote expressions of gratitude to others and a positivi-tree, where students were able to write positive messages and attach them to a tree placed outside especially for the occasion. The week ended with a Pink shirt dress-up competition for those students who wished to participate. West Melton Primary students also took part in the day and were encouraged to come to school wearing pink as part of a mufti-day. There was a bestdressed competition, with contestants wearing spectacular and award-worthy pink mufti to help spread the message of

To the Editors: John Newton suggested last week that money from the sale of surplus SDC housing in Ritso Street be used by Council to set up a housing trust to provide rentals for elderly Malvern residents. Bill Woods, a week earlier, also proposed that the money from those sales should stay in the area. Well said, to both correspondents. Such a trust could become a registered social housing provider and attract the Income Related Rent Subsidy. If a family can’t buy, they must rent. If they can’t rent because they are not chosen by landlords, then they have no-where to go. The next port of call is social housing. In Selwyn there is only one Housing NZ house. In our area there is also a shortage of suitable homes to rent for the elderly. Soon 30% of retirees will be renters. Central Government knows the political issue that the provision of housing is. They intervene in the market on behalf of the poor. Local Government in most places does the same through Community Housing Trusts. So far Selwyn Council has turned away from this responsibility to look after its people, not just its ratepayers.

This opened up opportunities for those family members who couldn’t attend. “I was thrilled, that with the aid of some very generous neighbours in Rangiora, my 87 year old father Robin Smith was able to share in this amazing experience by watching it through the live stream at home.” Another highlight for Melissa was speaking to Julia Morison, Morison who was awarded Officer of The New Zealand Order of Merit and is creator and designer of the Fanfare sculpture on the Christchurch Northern Motorway. “My sincere thanks to the individuals of the Malvern Community who were involved in my nomination for this honour,” concluded Melissa.

The evening of Friday, May 11th, saw the 2018 Bayleys Canterbury Annual Awards Dinner take place at Sixty6 in Christchurch. The event which was attended by staff (attired in their finest) of Bayleys Canterbury, celebrated the success of agents and administration staff, as well as Bayleys Canterbury as a company. Local Bayleys real estate agent, Jo McIntosh, was recognised for her outstanding work and awarded the Director’s Award for 2018, having been nominated for it by fellow staff members and directors of the company. Jo heads up the Darfield Bayleys office. She received the award in recognition of her excellent results in the local market and her efforts in maintaining these results for the past seven years. surprise to Jo, who didn't know anything about it beforehand. “I was not aware I had won the award so it was definitely a complete surprise to me on the night. It was very humbling and I felt very proud to be able to share the award with my team and my family,” she said. “To me, the award is an acknowledgement of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice that both I and my team have put in over the last seven years.” The statistics say it all with Jo having consistently been in the top 10% of Bayley’s salespeople since 2014 and in 2016/17, as well as 2017/2018, she was in the top 5%, which is a huge accomplishment in itself. Last week West Melton Primary School celebrated with Henrietta Haskell (centre), a former pupil of the School who was this year's West Melton Community Board's Scholarship recipient. Henrietta talked about her time at West Melton and her favourite memories as a student, which included the bi-ennial Wellington Camp trip and being in the Kapa Haka group. Henrietta accepted her scholarship from Mayor Sam Broughton (right) alongside school principal, Sue Jackson (left).

On Thursday, May 16th West Melton Primary School Eco-Warriors, along with parent helpers, travelled to Kowhai Sanctuary to monitor their previous plantings from 2013 to 2017. The children were excited to see the progress that the plants had made. While at the sanctuary, they also tracked insect and bird life with Matt Standford from Enviroschools.

Greendale School students recently planted 100 natives trees on the school grounds as part of Tree Appreciation Day. The students spent the first part of the day at the T.W Adams Arboretum on Adams Road. While there they studied the plantings of T.W Adams and learnt about some of the 800 species of trees that he brought to New Zealand. They then returned to school to plant the natives. Rhyannon from Tailored Trees helped guide the students and to plant the trees appropriately, at the right depth and spacing.

Businesses throughout Canterbury are still being targeted by mobile burglars for tobacco and cigarettes. ROAD SAFETY: We have had an awesome run of weather the past few months, for this time of the year. Grass growth in particular has been like Springtime which will make for pretty happy farmers heading into winter. Soon we can expect winter driving conditions to be upon us. Slow down and drive to the conditions. Reduce your following distances behind the vehicle in front of you and now is a good time to go and get your worn tyres replaced. On sections of road with trees on the Northern and Eastern sides you can soon expect that the road, and corners in particular, will be frozen and icy, both overnight and during the day. We all know these sections

of road, such as the S Bends a few kilometres west of Kirwee on the Main West Coast Road, reduce your speed and drive with caution at these locations. GIVE WAY AND STOP CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS: In Selwyn each year we continue to have locals who don’t give way at give way intersections and don’t stop at stop controlled intersections. Many crashes happen as a result, vehicles are smashed up and written off, occupants in nonoffending vehicles are badly injured and even killed! Huge amounts of Emergency Service resources and time are tied up as a result because a motorist did not stop! The cost to each and every taxpayer in New Zealand is massive through hospitalisations and long term medical care. The question has to be asked, why do some motorists not stop and give way to vehicles at stop-controlled-intersections? You would have to say that these particular motorists have developed this bad habit through laziness and their time management is poor, as often they are running short of time for appointments etc and rushing to get to their destination. Quite simply if motorists get in

May is also posy bowl month and the table looked stunning with various designs and ideas. It is surprising what you can find in the garden at this +me of year and members had really used their imagina+ons and design skills to create some lovely arrangements. Let us hope they gave pleasure to whoever received them in the area. We also discussed arrangements for the exhibit we will be crea+ng for the Na+onal Daffodil Show in September. We are really looking forward to this; we are a talented bunch at Garden Club - a bit of trumpet blowing is allowed some+mes! Let us hope we have another good year at the Club, enjoying our passion and the friendship of others. We finished off the mee+ng with an aPernoon tea and a catch up. We will be holding our mee+ngs indoors for the next few months, and have an interes+ng winter programme to look forward to. The winter sports season is upon us and Police would encourage all folk who have been out socialising and consuming alcohol to make good use of courtesy vans from our local drinking establishments, or sober drivers to get you all home safely. Look after your mates and get them home safely after a night out. SEARCH & RESCUE: Two Saturdays ago, a hunter and mountain runner were rescued either side of Porters Pass, in the mountains, in separate searches. Police would like to thank LandSAR Volunteers from the Oxford LandSAR group for the great work they put in. Two of the volunteers in the mountains were Darfield residents. Great work fellas. Four local women have been selected to play in the 2018 Hockey Masters’ World Cup in Terrassa, Barcelona from July 27th through to August 5th. The women will be representing New Zealand in the following categories: Jane Jenkins in 55+, Pip Wilson in 60+, Amy Truscott and Lisa Watson in 35+. They will be playing alongside 66 teams across the categories representing 21 different countries. The News caught up with the women recently to see how the preparations were going and to find out more about their plans.

Can you give us some background? Amy and Lisa: Started playing hockey in 1987 on grass. In 1992, Lisa began to play in the goal, while Amy is a midfielder. Both players have been Canterbury representatives and following Canterbury Masters selection in 2017, they were successful in New Zealand selection for the World Cup. Pip: I played all my youth hockey in Malvern, and premier hockey for Selwyn. I was also a Canterbury representative for around eleven years. Jane: I started playing hockey at Courtenay School and represented Malvern Primary before High school hockey at St Margaret’s College. Premiere Club Hockey and Canterbury Representative honours along with New Zealand national titles also feature in my career. Do you travel for team training, or just do individual training in your home Province? Pip: Jane and I practice with a group of New Zealand Masters men players in town, along with

other exercise together. We also both have a Training Camp in Auckland, coming up. Amy: Lisa and I travel to Auckland for two weekend training camps with the team, and also do individual training at home and with our Club. Will you be travelling to Spain with your team or as individuals? All: We have made individual arrangements, but some will travel with other Canterbury girls from various age groups. What was the selection process like? Pip: Following National Masters Tournament in November, a squad of 24 was named. This was cut down to the final 18 players to go to Barcelona, after a February training camp. Jane: I was selected after playing in a Trans-Tasman series in Whangarei where I played for our 55+ team. Do you have fundraisers planned? Amy and Lisa: We have got a fundraising event coming up on the June 9th, which is a MidWinter Dine and Dance. Tickets and more information are available from our Facebook page. Anything else you’d like to add? Pip: This will be my seventh trip away, in a New Zealand Masters team. It is a huge commitment, you have to be fit but I love the camaraderie and love playing against other countries. Amy and Lisa: We are both very proud of our achievements. honoured to be selected and are looking forward to representing NZ in Hockey. We thank everyone that has given us guidance along the way. Malvern Netball would like to sincerely thank their long-term administrators and volunteers, who have changed their roles within Malvern Netball over the last couple of months. Melissa George has taken umpiring at Malvern to a higher level with her training of many umpires and is the current Umpring Coordinator for the Malvern Centre. She has also attained her Zone Umpiring qualification, as well as being an Umpire Examiner, and spending countless hours allocating umpires on the draw each week. Along with this she has been President of Malvern Netball for three years from 2015 - 2017 and is now Immediate Past President and an Executive Committee member. During the summer she also organised a very successful Summer Fitness Competition. The 2018 President is Ariana Batstone who has been involved with the South Malvern Netball Club for many years. Working alongside her in the Secretary role is Katrina Ellis - both of these women still play netball, as well as juggling their jobs, families and netball admin responsibilities. Thanks also to the many other people that work tirelessly behind the scenes to help run the Malvern Netball Centre. Without all these volunteer hours from committee member and countless others, netball in Malvern would not be the competition it is. On Sunday a non competitive motorcycle trail-ride over a 40 kilometre course on farmland, and through forestry, was held as a fundraising event for Glentunnel School and Selwyn Rugby Club. It was jointly organised by Adventure Trailrides event organiser, Grenville Button and the Corson Family, Family owners of the main property used for the event, Gowanlea. Gowanlea runs cattle and deer and is the base for the Gowanlea Honey business. The Corson family were heavily involved with arranging the event as it’s a sport they are passionate about. The whole family are involved with following the three Corson boys around the South Island to different motorbike racing events, and saw this as a way of assisting with fundraising for two local organisations (Glentunnel School and Selwyn Rugby Club). With changeable weather the week prior, organisers were thrilled to have 287 riders attending, including adults and families which included the oldest rider at 62 years and the youngest, eight year old Sam Johnston from Windwhistle, on his first trail-ride. Riders travelled from Oamaru, Cromwell, Franz Josef and Westport to enjoy a day of offroad riding and the challenges marked out on the hill country and forestry terrain. An over grown trail through Lowmount Forest 4-5 kilometres long had to be cleared by scrub cutter and chainsaws the week before, to create a loop circuit minimising impact on farm tracks and pasture. With easy shortcuts for novice and child riders, plus enduro options off the main course for experienced riders, it was reported that everyone’s capability was catered for. “Feedback from the riders has been really positive so next

year’s event is already on the calendar,” commented Grenville. “Glentunnel School had barbecue food and drinks for sale and the Selwyn Rugby Club provided assistance with track clearing and gate marshals. A big thank you to the Corsen Family and Rayonaire Matariki Forestry for their support providing such a great venue,” Grenville concluded. Both Glentunnel School and the Selwyn Rugby Club each received a $3,000 donation

from the event. Glentunnel School's donation will go towards an Outdoor classroom and Learning space for the purpose of offering an alternative learning environment for the School Community Selwyn Rugby Club will use the funds towards further Club refurbishment, Team uniforms and equipment. The Corson family thank all the riders who attended and for the respect they showed on the properties during the day.

Last week’s wet weather had organisers and golfers keeping their fingers crossed as the date drew nearer for the thirteenth Windwhistle Golf Classic. After the hideous weather Thursday, May 17th, (tournament day), dawned fresh and sunny with near perfect conditions at Terrace Downs for tee-off. This popular annual event is the major fundraiser each year for Windwhistle School, so a lot was riding on good weather. The Terrace Downs golf course was a specular venue for the day and the 116 players entered in the tournament made the most of the fantastic course. The players again enjoyed a delicious morning tea before tee -off and packed snacks on course provided by school parents. This year the players also en j oy ed two on -co ur s e barbecues for lunch, both of which were provided by sponsors. Following the 18 holes of golf, there was an opportunity to unwind and relax at the Clubhouse before the prizegiving and buffet dinner. All of which was enjoyed by the players together with school pa r en ts a nd l oc a ls i n attendance. After dinner, Ed Marfell from HRL (Hazlett Rural Ltd) took on the role of auctioneer for an entertaining action-packed auction. A silent auction was also popular with ‘friend against friend’ bidding meaning some great funds were raised for the School. The combined auctions were a fantastic success. The school has it’s largest roll in many years. Principal, Bronwen Seaward said, “with this growth comes certain challenges, our staff and resources are stretched to the max and we are constantly juggling to meet the needs of all of our diverse learners. “It is fundraisers such as the Golf Classic that make it possible to offer the quality learning programmes that our chi l dr e n d e s erv e, ” s h e explained. The funds raised from the tournament will be going towards employing quality staff,

purchasing innovative teaching resources, providing quality professional learning opportunities, and exciting education opportunities outside of the classroom, for students. “It was a wonderful day out and all in support of a special School,” a spokesperson for the organising committee said.
