Not many people can say they are a New Zealand number one in their chosen sporting field. However local, eleven year old, Tyler Wiremu can, having just won the title of New Zealand Junior Motocross Champion. Over the weekend of April, 21st and 22nd Tyler competed in the New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships near Mosgiel, taking on riders from around the country. In what can only be described as challenging conditions, caused by the weather, varying factors made the first day of racing tough for both riders and the organising Club. This only allowed Tyler to race once on Saturday before racing was cancelled. An enormous effort on Sunday by the organisers meant the event could continue and the respective champions be determined. Tyler qualified with the fastest lap in his class at a time of 2:34.034, four seconds faster than the next rider. He then went on to set the fastest lap time for any 85cc bike on the
Saturday of 2:31.268. This lap time was faster than the older 13-16 year old 85cc class. Unfortunately changes to the track alignment on Sunday meant that lap times were

“Tyler raced four times on the Sunday which was a big ask, the competitors were tough and Tyler’s overall position (win) was not determined until the final race.” With the weather working against him, Tyler showed that his skill in a sport he loves was exactly what was needed to take out the title of New Zealand Junior Motocross Champion in the 11-12 year 85cc class. It was a close competition, with Tyler coming in four points ahead of the second place holder. “I am very proud of my win,” an excited Tyler said. “I’ve finally learnt that hard work pays off. If it wasn’t for my dad waking me up in the morning and pushing me to work hard then I wouldn’t have done it,”
he added. “The highlight of the event was when I came off the track from the last race knowing I had won and everyone was there to congratulate me.” Tyler currently holds both the 9 -11 year 65cc and 11-12 year 85cc New Zealand Motocross titles. The 65cc title is held until November 2018, as he will no longer contest it. The 85cc title is his until April 2019 and at this stage he is undecided about contesting it. “We will be travelling to Australia in June/July for the Hattah Desert race, but we are also waiting and hoping to find out, if Tyler may be able to enter the World Junior Motocross champs to be held in Australia later in the year,” Dion concluded.

It is always a good time at the Thompson Horse Camps. Thompson Horses began running horse riding camps in January 2016 from the Thompson family farm in Kirwee. The initial Camp saw four children attending, nowadays things are a little different, with a waiting list of those wishing to attend. Thompson Horses is a family business, with all six members of the family playing a part in it. Parents Lisa and Andy Thompson have ridden horses for years and passed their love of all things equestrian on to their four daughters, Chris (23), Maddi (19), George (18) and Gus (15). “We all started riding at a young age and we have been lucky en oug h to h ave don e everything from pony club, show hunter, eventing, mustering and following our passion for showjumping and hunting,” Chris explained. The Camps came about after the sisters went to a ‘Wilson Sisters’ Camp in Whangarei. “It was these girls that inspired us to do what we do, as we totally loved their Camp,” reflected Chris. “We realised that no one was providing these camps in the South Island; we figured we had the facilities, horses and supportive parents to help us, so why not go ahead and offer them.” The four-day horse Camps are offered as an extra, over and above their riding school and are run every school holidays, with the occasional weekend Camp or adult Camp. The majority of the Camps offered are for school-aged children, with the girls suggesting they’re most suited to those aged between six and sixteen. Children attending the Camps
are taught about caring for their horse and how to improve their overall awareness of, and relationship with, them. For the younger riders, there is a focus on gaining confidence through games and farm riding also. The Camp offers participants the opportunity of bringing their own horse and gear along, however, the girls have between eighteen to twenty-five horses that can also be used. The Camps allow for the campers to ride in an allweather sand arena, to go hacking over the farm and to explore a cross-country course. If that is not enough for the horse enthusiasts the Camp offers show jumping, show hunter and cross country specific instruction. The farm can accommodate a number of children in various types of accommodation. “The children can choose their sleep locations on the day,” Chris said. The Thompson girls are typical young people who also have busy lives outside the riding school and camps. “Maddi is the driver and the main player of Thompson Horses,” Chris explained. “Gus is still at school, and when not at school she gives lessons or works her own, or clients’, horses. George and I are more behind the scenes now as we lead busy lives of our own, and just work our own horses. “Maddi works with horses full time and runs the riding school. While most of her work is done at our property, she often travels to give lessons or work horses on their owner’s properties.” Horse riding is in the blood of these sisters and when one is
away, or busy with alternate ventures, the others step up to keep the school running. “Maddi is due to go to Canada in the next month to work with horses there, so Gus, George and possibly myself will be all hands on deck to keep the place running while she is away,” Chris added. “Last year Maddi went to Switzerland for winter and trained under Olympian Eva Ursin, Ursin so she has a fair idea of what to expect while away and is definitely excited to be going to Canada.”

The Greendale School Hall was abuzz on Thursday, May 3rd as local primary school students competed in the Malvern Spelling Bee competition. This is the second year the Malvern Spelling Bee has been held, and was again hosted by Greendale School. The Malvern Spelling Bee competition was initiated by a former Greendale student, Olivia Adams (year 6 at the time), who came up with the idea as part of the School’s ‘bring an idea to life’. Olivia wanted to come up with a competition, that was something other than sport, in her final year at Greendale School. Twelve teams competed for the top spot, with all primary schools in the immediate area represented. The children were given lists of words to study over the school holidays, but the actual test words were kept a secret until the event. Schools knew that the words would come from the Essential Lists, one through to eight, and the words would be based on an Anzac theme. The competition consisted of six rounds with each round containing ten words. The teams were able to discuss their

answers before reaching a consensus and submitting it to the marking panel. Once marked, the teams had a further two minutes to make any corrections before moving on to the next set of ten words. The first two rounds ended with perfect tens for all the teams, with round three introducing harder words and a change on the scoreboard. “The words started out easy and then got really hard,” recounted Greendale students, Brooke and Sam. It was very close and ended with only one point separating each of the winning teams and only nine points separating the
twelve teams. • 1st: Darfield Dictionaries 54pts • 2nd: Greendale Geniuses 53pts • 3rd: Glentunnel Lexicon 52pts. “The Darfield students were thrilled to come away with a win even if there was only one point separating each of the top teams,” a spokesperson for the Darfield team said. The event was reported to be a lot of fun with much laughter and friendly rivalry between the teams. Some of the trickiest words included - animosity, belligerence, barrage, dissidence, violation, solemn, valiance and shrapnel.

Then there are other Internet Browsers like Chrome or Firefox, but Defender doesn’t scan the downloads on these. It does schedule virus scans regularly and deletes anything nasty it finds. It updates itself continuously without the need to bother you and watches for any strange behaviour in your machine. Lastly…it’s free! There are other antivirus programmes some free, and some you pay for. You get these other programmes by buying them, or when you get your new Laptop or Desktop they come preinstalled as a trial programme for 60 or 90 days. The first thing I do is go into Control Panel then Programmes and Features, look for the name of the antivirus and then uninstall. Once finished it will ask you to restart and once it restarts, Windows Defender will automatically start up replacing the trial antivirus and start protecting your computer.

The month of May 2018 marks the one year anniversary of Darfield Automotive under its ownership of Janelle and Paul (Macca) McIntosh. McIntosh Co-owner Janelle undertakes reception and office/administration duties while Macca is in the workshop. Also in the workshop with Macca are Tim, Tim Sam and Dale ensuring great service and timely repairs when needed. Macca, Tim and Sam are all Trade Qualified Automotive Technicians, as well as qualified WoF inspectors, while Dale is an Automotive Technician’s Assistant. With three mechanics authorised to issue Warrants of Fitness, the vehicle’s safety check can be done while the driver waits in the customer area, or the car can be left with the experienced Darfield Automotive team for its inspection. “We take vehicle safety very seriously,” Macca explained, “and we are occasionally questioned about some of the finer details of WOFs. We are contracted to NZTA for the completion of warrants under New Zealand law, so we see
ourselves a little like the Police; we don’t make the laws but we have to enforce them.” Darfield Automotive pride themselves on providing regular vehicle servicing, second to none. “When we complete our lube service on your vehicle we aim to have it trouble free until the next time you return for a service,” Macca said. Darfield Automotive have also developed a service schedule where they complete a comprehensive check as part of their standard service routine. This report outlines any items that may be detrimental to the vehicle’s performance. Possibly lesser known is the fact that the company stock a wide range of car, SUV and 4x4 tyres. “We fit tyres to people, as much as we fit tyres to cars,” Macca smiled. “Often there are many tyre choices for your vehicle, so we listen to your driving requirements before we make a suggestion about tyres. We mainly stock and recommend Maxxis tyres, as we feel they are the best value for money, give great performance and are long lasting.” For the handyperson wanting to
fix something for themselves, Darfield Automotive have retail stock of bulbs (12v and 24v), over 200 different filters, take home oil packs, spark plugs, 20L Agricuaral oil, and wiper blades. “If we don’t have it in stock we can normally get it within the day,” Macca added. “We are sometimes asked exactly what we can fix, and the answer is; basically we repair anything with a WOF. That’s any car, SUV, 4x4, ute, trailer, caravan, and we cover all makes, models and ages. We stick to what we know and we do it well,” he commented. “Every vehicle has its ‘thing’ that annoying idiosyncrasy that goes wrong. With good servicing this is hopefully avoided, but we are also there to get you back up and running should you break down,” Macca said. Darfield Automotive have made huge investments in equipment to further improve their customers’ experience. “We’ve invested in the latest brake and suspension test lane. Also coming soon is a new 4 ton drive on platform hoist with the latest digital wheel alignment equipment,” Macca concluded.

Selwyn Sports Trust ran their first Orienteering event on Tuesday, May 1st, which was open to schools in the Selwyn district. The event was held on a local fully-operational farm in Hororata, with rocky terrain that included spurs and gullies. “We were fortunate with both the weather and the venue; it was just wet and muddy enough that the students had a blast,” Jayde Mayberry, Mayberry Physical Activity Activator, for the Trust said! “The Selwyn Sports Trust is constantly thinking of ways, and introducing opportunities, for children to get more active and take part in physical activity,” Jayde explained. “Little did the
students know, but this was actually fantastic cross country training for events coming up this term!” Teams from Glentunnel, Springfield, Darfield, Hororata, Greendale, Clearview, Burnham and Ladbrooks primary schools attended the Selwyn wide event. Around 150 students took part in the initiative that was designed to give participants a new and exciting experience. Teams navigated their way through checkpoints in any order they chose, attempting to visit as many of them in the designated time of an hour and a half. most points won. In the case of this activity, it was not just about navigation and route choice, but also about selecting which controls to visit and the order in which to visit them. There was no penalty for not visiting checkpoints but time penalties were incurred if the orienteer took longer than the set time. “The emphasis was more on the participation in the event, than the result, as well as making sure everyone had fun, overcame some challenges and got their team across the finish line,” Jayde added. “The Trust thank Tony, Prue, Chris and Jane Thwaites for the use of their beautiful farm! “With the great feedback we have had about this event we are definitely looking at options to run it again,” Jayde concluded.

and can be for basic storage right through to full stirring silos for quick turn-around crop drying. They work with local contractors who can undertake the concrete placing and assembly side of things, or the buyer can choose to DIY (silo jack hire is available). Brandt augers, conveyors and vacs are manufactured in Canada. Augers can be conventional or swing-away and are sized according to the height and diameter of the silo to be filled. Such is the demand for Brandt equipment, there is only one manufacturing run per year for each type of product and so it pays to place orders as early in the year as possible. The GrainVac is Brandt’s most popular product and every year they have more orders for Vacs than they can manufacture. Brandt equipment is sold in many countries around the world, however North America ( C a n a d a a n d t h e U SA combined) is still the largest market for their goods. To the Editors: After several years of talk, the Selwyn Council is selling off the houses and vacant section in Ritso Street, Darfield. Before his untimely death Councillor Stewart was heavily involved, along with myself, putting a case forward to the Council that should these properties be sold, the money must not go into the Selwyn Council Coffers. The former Malvern area people paid for these houses by way of being rated to pay for them. In fairness the money gained from the sale of these properties must be returned to the area from where it was collected.

Bill Woods, Springfield. To the Editors: Chlorination Submissions for Malvern Hills Water Scheme a farce? When is a submission not a Submission? When the Selwyn District Council can covertly take action two years prior, and then talk about consultation! During the week before Submissions on the Long Term Plan for the Council were due, residents and users of the Dalethorpe intake of the Malvern Hills Water Scheme were made aware that the Council had been adding Chlorine to our Scheme, on a permanent basis, for the last two years, or more. Not only that, the Water Sub-Committee which has helped steer the two Malvern Hills Schemes for the last forty years, had also been kept in the dark! The Sub Committee meetings with the Council had been cut from four to two during 2016, with the discussions including the One District wide Water Rate. Little did we know that our fears of losing any say in our district Scheme had already been lost. As soon as the agreement was signed off, the committee was disbanded. There had been discussions around new UV System, filtration, temporary Chorine to cover turbidity and transgression, but not permanent chlorination as it was clear the committee did not favour this. In the first ten to twelve years of the Scheme. when it was chlorinated. some farmers found that stock, particularly young sheep, wouldn’t drink the water in summer months. The Wason Family of Russell’s Flat left the scheme because of this and didn’t re-join until 1988 when with a UV system installed there were no problems with palatability. Other than an over-reaction to the Havelock North problems, I personally see no evidence that temporary Chlorine to cover turbidity/transgressions is not the most suitable treatment. I also am appalled that the Council can treat their constituents in this way. They have overstepped their authority.

On Sunday May 6th the West Melton Young Farmers Club held t h e i r a n n u a l p l o ug h i n g competition. While it is promoted as an annual event, it is weather dependent; this year however everything went to plan and rain clouds stayed away. “We had 22 tractor entries and one horse team entry,” said Bex Legat, Legat one of the organisers. “While there are several ploughing affiliations around the country, we are quite a rarity being a group of young people running a ploughing match,” she commented. “Our goal for coming years is to work with the national ploughing association to help them set up their planned new division for young farmers. This perhaps won’t be as technical as some of the current classes, but will hopefully bring in some young blood to the sport, which other wise is in danger of dying out. “Our goal on Sunday was to get as many people through the gate viewing the machinery and horses in action and giving them the opportunity to talk to the

competitors and ask questions.” The event attracted 250-300 people through the gate and the funds raised from entry will be donated to the National Ploughing Association. “New Zealand is hosting the World Ploughing Championships in 2028 and, as with any event such as this, funds are always needed,” Bex added. “Malvern St John attended the day to fundraise for their cause a n d t h e r e w e r e t hr e e independent food vendors on site also. Overall it was a successful day and the national committee members that were there were reportedly blown away by the number of spectators that came along to watch. “I think the highlight for me was seeing the interaction between the ploughmen/women and the public, they enjoy discussing their passion for ploughing and their machinery/horses and want to see the sport continue to grow. “The competitors enjoyed having the public come and view
the competition and the ground was fantastic. The judges had a good day and the weather turned out almost perfect.” Bex was appreciative of the support given by their sponsors, the assistance of West Melton Young Farmers Club members and the Seaton Bros for the use of their property. 825 children from Canterbury Primary Schools congregated at Burnside Park, Christchurch on Friday, May 4th to take part in the annual Rugby Fun Day. Local primary school children joined the group of twenty-six schools, making up some of the fifty-five teams to compete. The teams on the day were divided into four grades, years four, five and six as well as a girls’ grade, made up of any year level. The day started out cold on the grounds, however this didn’t deter the enthusiasm of the young players who were all keen to get on to the field and play. Anita Hawkins from West Melton Primary School commented, “the Rugby fun day was an excellent event. Despite the cold, the students ran, tackled and got covered in dirt, and all with big smiles on their faces.” Each team had the opportunity to play three games throughout the day. These were made up of ten minute halves, but it was reportedly the waiting that was the hardest part of the day for some, with many just wanting to play hard.

Parents who attended the day commented that it was another successful event; well organised again by Primary Sports Canterbury. A large number of children had never played tackle rugby before so the whole day was full of excitement and learning. As Anita explained, "all of our West Melton competitors had never played tackle rugby before and had all grown in confidence at
the end of the event. Many are now looking to join Clubs before the start of next season.” Students thanked their whanau and friends for coaching and managing the teams, as well as Club players who took the time to referee the event. “They were great with the young students, taking the time to explain errors as the game progressed,” Anita concluded.

Along with the Kirwee Highwaymen (see last week’s News), the Hororata Black Diamonds team also took the opportunity of playing in the Golden Oldies World Tournament that took place in Hagley Park, from April 22nd to 29th. The team included players from throughout the South Malvern district, plus one or two from further afield. A large number of the players in the team had been playing together for twenty years or so as members of the Selwyn Rugby Football Club. Chris Thwaites, Thwaites spokesperson for the Hororata Black Diamonds team said, “it was great to be involved in such a well-run, international event that took place not too far away.” It was reported that the team enjoyed many highlights throughout the week-long tournament, including meeting numerous international teams, many who had attended events, such as this, in the past. “It was great to see different cultures from other countries, in particular those of the Argentinian and Japanese teams,” Chris explained. The tournament was reported as being a well run, organised event. “Along with the sportsmanship, we really enjoyed the opening ceremony dinner and the closing ceremony. It was rather surreal, 2,500 people all in one marquee,” a delighted Chris added. “It was so much fun. I felt like I was back at the Munich Beer Festival! “The tournament was more than just some old blokes playing a good game of rugby, it was also
about including family and friends. It was fantastic to have our families on the sideline cheering us on, and it was wonderful to share those moments with our children too.” The Diamonds gratefully thank their major sponsors for the Hororata Black Diamonds team member, Shane Paterson, support given, their lovely bus about to score a try. drivers and their physio team. They also thank other local team the Kirwee Highwaymen who shared their bus with them for the week. “Most importantly we thank all our supporters, who stood by us - even when they thought we were a little crazy,” he laughed! The team is already planning to attend the next Golden Oldies Tournament which will take place in Denver, U.S.A in 2020. “We are seeking sponsorship plus some more players to grow the team for this venture,” Chris concluded.
