“The Dutton Garage Malvern Run has been confirmed in the Vintage Car Club calendar for 2019,” commented event organiser Malcolm McGibbon of Darfield.

A beautiful autumn day greeted participants at the Darfield Recreation Centre on Anzac morning for a car display prior to departing on the 80km run through the Malvern District.

“Many local residents took the opportunity to come and see the 65 vehicles that were on display and were seen taking plenty of photos and talking to the drivers,” Malcolm added.

Of the 65 vehicles on display, fifteen were over one hundred years old and they made a beautiful sight with their brass lights and fittings gleaming in the sunshine.

“The most common question from onlookers was - who does all the polishing,” Malcolm laughed?

After a short briefing at 11am the Soldiers’ Ode was read by Terry Hutchinson of the Malvern/Hororata RSA and the first cars departed for Sheffield.

They then travelled on to Hororata and Glenroy before finally arriving at the lunch stop in Glentunnel.

As is usual with very old cars there were some reliability issues. An Austin broke an axle an d o rg a n i se r M a lco lm McGibbon’s 1914 Renault came to a halt with a bent valve in the engine!

“In each case,” Malcolm reported, “it was nothing that can’t be fixed and both will certainly be back next year.”

Prepara on: Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and pepper to combine.

Pre-cook the bacon.

Melt bu2er and add the onion and cook, s rring frequently, un l soPened, S r in the chopped bacon and remove from the heat.

S r the corn into the dry ingredients.

Make a well in the centre and add the bu2ermilk, egg and bacon mixture.

Fold the ingredients together un l just combined.

Bake un l the tops are golden and a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean, about 20 minutes.

Darfield Preschool & Nursery staff and children had an amazing week during the recent Commonwealth Games. The Preschool children enjoyed participating in some of their own Commonwealth Games and learning all about the event.

Each morning the Preschool’s medals board was updated with the amazing success of the New Zealand athletes and that brought about much discussion about all the sporting events at the Games.

“Our children love to get involved and be physically active as they learn about team spirit and personal achievement,” said a Pres chool & N urs ery spokesperson. “We were lucky enough to be able to watch some of our athletes compete in a variety of events and cheer them on. We also learnt about our flag and what the symbols/ colours mean and our four year olds have been singing the national anthem and teaching their younger peers.”

The events held at Preschool involved, Basketball, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Table Tennis, Lawn Bowls and Shot Put. “Throughout all these events we were learning co-ordination, balance, strength, distance, participation, co-operation and much more. Well done to all our Preschool athletes you all did so well.”

Another great night was had by all at the recent quiz night hosted by the Darfield Tennis Club, it was reported. With questions put together, and the

A group of Darfield’s TM Dance World (TMDW) students have just arrived home having been competing i n a d ance competition with a difference.

What made this competition different was not the dancing but the venue! Called Hollywood Bound, the whole contest took place while sailing on the Royal Caribbean Cruise line.

In 2016, Tara McKeown, McKeown owner, and instructor at TMDW, along with selected students, attended the Australian National Dance Competitions on the Gold Coast, run by Peter Oxford.

Oxford In 2017 he announced he would run the next competition on a cruise ship, which led Tara to register a small team of nine senior dancers to participate.

The team, their families and supporters, set sail on April 15th after putting in many hours of practice in preparation.

They spent three days competing in a more challenging environment than ever experienced.

“The moving ship took some adjusting to,” Tara explained.

“The experience was certainly different, but the girls all handled it like professionals,” a proud Tara added.

The girls performed four team dances; jazz, Broadway, lyrical and contemporary. These all took place in what was reported to be a beautiful theatre, venue for much of the cruise line’s entertainment and open to passengers who could also watch the dance competition.

“The girls came away with results we were very proud of.

Scoring over ninety points in most of the dances meant we were placed in the High Gold category,” Tara said.

Contemporary: Unsteady Gold Award and 4th • Broadway: Burlesque - High Gold and 6th • Jazz: Dangerous - High Gold and 8th The TMDW dancers also performed two dances of their choice in the Battle of the Stars final show.

“We repeated our contemporary and Broadway team’s entry, and were placed fourth for Unsteady and fifth in Burlesque,” Tara reported.

Tara and her students managed two port days in between performing and explored Noumea and Lifou Islands, which Tara commented, was •

thoroughly enjoyed by all. There were endless activities and entertainment for the group to get involved in while onboard also.

“Our extended team enjoyed the ice skating show, night time rock party in the promenade, and they made the most of diving lessons, mini golf, bingo, wine and beer tasting, ship tours, massages, flow-rida surfing, dancing shows and more,” Tara enthused.

“We all had an amazing experience and TMDW would like to thank everyone who came along to support our dancers,” she gratefully concluded.

ON OUR DOORSTEP Well winter is definitely right on our doorstep. If you have managed to complete your pre winter chores ie. clean out your spouting, check and block off all exterior holes around garage doors and sumps etc, your house should be protected for the season.

You can be sitting inside on a wet cold day without the should-have feeling, but with the done-that feeling. Your local rodents won't be getting inside to share your warm house, and if you set your bait

stations on your outside walls they won't be needing shelter anyway. This time of year spiders are fairly inactive, except for whitetails who tend to live in our houses with us, and our winter heating is very convenient for them.

Bringing in logs for the fire is an obvious way of increasing their numbers inside. They like heat and because our wood sheds are usually in a warm dry place in our garden, we tend to transport them inside ourselves. The other pest that winter brings on, are cluster-flies. Once the male has settled down in his roosting place for the winter

he lets off his pheromone and thousands can turn up. It is just about impossible to block them out, so if you find them and want them out; call for a treatment.

DARFIELD This year’s National Anzac theme was to recognise Returned Service Personnel dealing with ‘Not all Wounds Bleed’ - highlighting the fact that mental health injuries are the most common, but least understood, of all wounds suffered by New Zealand servicemen and women.

Trauma, depression and other mental illnesses were all present following the conflicts of yesteryear - but seldom, if ever, recognised, talked about, or treated. Pastor Paul Cossey who officiated at the Darfield Anzac service encouraged those attending, who perhaps hadn’t had chance to donate already, to do so, as the funds go towards providing support in many areas for veterans.

The Darfield service took a slightly different approach this year as the ceremony around the cenotaph was combined with the Church service that usually follows. This new initiative appeared to be well received by the large crowd attending on the warm, autumnal morning, however the ending, without the final march past, left many wondering if in fact proceedings were concluded.

There was a good community representation, along with service organisations and veterans. Two buglers and local piper Andrea Barnhill, Barnhill played where appropriate and the crowd placed their poppies in the plots surrounding the cenotaph as the names of fallen local armed forces personnel were read out.

Greendale School was part of the ANZAC ceremony held at Greendale Domain. The children and teachers were proud to attach their handmade purple poppies to the horses to commemorate these brave animals, their deeds, and their sacrifices in the war. As last Saturday’s rain was predicted to be heavy, which proved to be correct, organisers of the Hororata Night Glow and Autumn Fair made the right call and transferred the event to their postponement day of Sunday. Local Facebook Buy/ Sell and community pages saw a flurry of tickets up for sale as the new date clashed with existing arrangements, but equally so it saw numerous requests for tickets from folk eager to attend.

Fog lights are set low on the vehicle and designed to cut under the fog to illuminate the road. Don’t switch lights to high beam as the light will only reflect off the fog and dazzle you - making your vision worse.

I had a lot of comments last month about vehicles with only one working head light driving on the road. I find the best quick check is to turn them on when you first jump in your car and check for two reflections off the wall, fence, bushes or whatever is in front of your vehicle. Head light bulbs generally only take five to ten minutes to replace and most automotive workshops will stock 90% of bulbs fitted to most vehicles.

With the colder autumn weather, comes dewy mornings, drizzle and of course, rain. Having good quality, and properly operating, wiper blades is a must this time of year. Poorly operating wipers, combined with sun strike, is a recipe for disaster. New wiper blades are cheap and make your driving experience far more pleasurable.

It’s also time to start thinking about winter driving and what you can do to make your vehicle handle the conditions. Checking tyres, antifreeze/coolant and your battery condition is a good start (excuse the pun).

The balloonists really wanted to perform, not only for the crowd, but also for our wider community of locals and volunteers, from both near and far, who had worked so hard.

They were overwhelmed with the hospitality they have experienced this week,” Cindy added.

“We are lucky to have Ballooning Canterbury based in our community as they have the experience to coordinate the Night Glow. This coupled with the Hororata Community Trust’s ability to manage large events has been the recipe for success right from the start,” she said.

“The public were given an amazing experience from the time gates opened with the opportunity to walk through a cold inflated balloon, climb in a basket and fire the burners, watch the special shaped balloon float above the grounds, and learn the science behind hot air balloons with the University of Canterbury.”

Live music created a great vibe while people enjoyed a huge range of food, arts and craft stalls, the famous Hororata Pie, plus much more. Ten community groups took the opportunity offered at the event, to run their own fundraisers.

“Thank you to all the balloonists, partners, stall holders, suppliers and of course the huge team of volunteers who made this event possible,” Cindy said. “We have been humbled by the support we received from everyone who came, and even those who couldn’t. Our community has big dreams and the Hororata Night Glow is part of us being able to achieve them,” she concluded.

As entrants, we thoroughly enjoyed the day, and it was great to see the large number of local residents out at the start in Darfield and along the route to wave us on. Stopping at the five memorials along the route was a sobering reminder of the toll the two World Wars took on our district, and what a privilege to be doing the run in vehicles that were around at the time these two sad events in history took place.

A special thanks to all of those who entered their veteran, vintage and classic vehicles in the event, to Malcolm and Anita McGibbon from Darfield who organised the event for the VCC, to Dutton Garage in Christchurch who provided so much support, and to the good folks at the Hororata Golf Club who looked after the catering.

To the Editors: The Kirwee Community Hall is situated on private property owned by the Courtenay A & P Association on High Street with public access up to the Hall.

Up until 1988 the Courtenay

A & P Association had a small committee that maintained the Hall, paying for all repairs, maintenance and bookings. But in 1988 a Public Meeting was held and from this, a very active committee was formed for the purpose of upgrading the Hall to the standard that was required for it to function as a community asset. Plans were drawn up, with the new Hall to be done in four stages.

1) Kitchen and Supper Room, 2) Toilets, Bar area and Foyer, 3) West Lounge, 4) East Lounge.

Over a ten year period of building, with over $400,000. raised through various fund raising activities e.g catering, dances, cards, newspaper collection, Press insertions, raffles, debentures and more; the people of Kirwee were right behind the committee in the fund raising. So by August 1999 when the refurbished Hall was opened by then Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, it was debt free. The costs are still on-going today, and we have to fund raise to keep the Hall up to standard.

Rentals from Hall users help and last year the premises were used on 195 days with 208 bookings. The Hall is available for any persons to hire.

As we are a private Hall we don’t receive any funding from the Selwyn District Council, other than them paying our insurance.

the Council are looking at making residents pay, will not see the Kirwee Community Hall receiving any of this money for funding. So why should we have to pay this rate?

In December we held the Kirwee Hall AGM, but as we didn’t get enough people attending, we are now holding another AGM on Monday, May 7th. Members of the community are all invited to attend. New Zealand Music Month is coming to Selwyn District Libraries in May. Enjoy free interactive performances for children with ensembles from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), as well as a variety of Ministry of the Mind Music artists brought to libraries in conjunction with Arts, Culture and Heritage Selwyn.

The CSO ‘Music Trails through the Library’ sessions are a fun and interactive way of introducing young children to live music. The two CSO performances take place on May 3rd at Rolleston Library and May 14th at Lincoln Library.

Ministry of the Mind Music features Picking at the Remnants, Alex Hardy and Patrick, Moonflower, and Hanna Hogg. All artists will be using vocals and acoustic instruments only in these sessions and are aiming to provide pleasant background acoustic classic (soft) rock and popular music to the libraries. These sessions take place each Saturday during May at each Selwyn District Libraries branch (Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston and Lincoln).

All Music Month events in Selwyn are free, with no bookings required, however spaces are limited.

Over the weekend beginning April 20th three Malvern St John cadets were part of a squad of 24 from the Southern region who took on the Northern and Central regions in the National Youth Festival 2018. The event took place in Nelson and the three Malvern cadets, Hannah Ireland, Ireland Jenny Walter, Walter and Sarah Gillespie can be extremely proud

of the fact that they were members of the champion, winning, region. The Southern contingent has taken the title of champion region for the sixth time in a row.

Entrants were tested in the areas of first aid, communications and drill and it was reported to be a busy fullon day, but the squad of 24

cadets performed very well and this shows in their outstanding results.

“The badge that was also covered was the ‘Arts Badge’ so along with a day’s competing there were circus arts, street art, wood art, painting, body painting and a masquerade ball,” said a very proud Darfield Youth Divisional Manager Lynda Walter.

The 2018 Golden Oldies World Tournament, held in Christchurch, ran from April, 22nd to 29th. While Rugby teams made up the bulk of the participants the sports of cricket, golf, hockey, lawn bowls and netball were also represented.

Numerous locals took part and participated in the spirit of the Games and its mission to culture fun, friendship and fraternity.

Their team is made up of players from Kirwee, West Melton and other outlying districts, including Christchurch, and has an average age of 51 years.

“The week long tournament, began with bus travel, combining with the Hororata Black Diamonds Rugby Team, to attend the opening ceremony at South Hagley Park,” reported Kirwee Highwaymen spokesperson Roger Milne.

Milne “The event commenced with ‘The Parade of Nations’ where all the teams marched across the Park.

The atmosphere was electric with comrades displaying the three ethical F’s of Golden Oldies sport … fun, friendship and fraternity. The opening ceremony included a welcome from the Christchurch Mayor, a Maori welcome and three hours of festivities allowing players and partners to connect,” Roger said.

“Of note,” Roger commented, “was that Stephen Larcombe and Graham Henry attended as ambassadors, at the tournament.”

Anzac day provided an opportunity for the Australian and New Zealand teams to

attend Dawn Parades and enjoy the wonderful comradeship thereafter. Thursday gave the Highwaymen an opportunity to host a day out with a farming theme.

“Eighty good folk, mostly from Australia, set out on buses provided by Torlesse Travel, for a planned tour of our local countryside,” Roger commented. “The first stop was at the Coalgate sale yards then on to Homebush Stables.

We then headed to the farming property of Gavin Wilson (and two shearing demonstrations) followed by a visit to Ashley and Warwick Seaton’s farm.

“The final event of the day was a hosted function at the Kirwee Rugby Clubrooms, finishing with a spit roast meal, an auction, raffles and much hilarity.

Support from Club members, the Kirwee Rugby Club and other local businesses was tremendous and the event was hailed a huge success.”

The next world Golden Oldies tournament takes place in June 2020, in Denver Colorado and there is already interest in it from the Kirwee Highwaymen.

Try to insert spoonfuls of soggy cereal (such as Fruit Loops or Cheerios) into the mouth of the jug, while pretending to be an airplane. Now dump the contents of the jug on the floor.

Physical Test: Obtain a large beanbag and a2ach it to the front of your clothes.

Leave it there for 9 months. Now remove ten of the beans.
