Not everyone gets to play a 200th game for their Div 1rugby team, but that is exactly what Scott Mitchell was able to do on Saturday, April 21st when his Darfield 1st Division team took on Oxford.

The game, which was played on Darfield Rugby Football Club (DRFC) home grounds was a well played and fair game with both teams giving it their all.

Scott or Mitch to his mates, made the most of his opportunity to shine and exhibited some outstanding play. The crowd held their breath and watched in awe, as Scott intercepted the ball at one end of the field and ran the length of it to score a try directly between the posts.

He and his team brought home a 38 to 18 win over Oxford, in a game that had the home supporters delighted and cheering enthusiastically.

Scott’s peers, family and friends celebrated the 200th milestone with him after the game, commenting that they were in awe of his dedication to the Club.

Scott, lives in Darfield with wife Emily, Emily their two year old son Toby, Toby and six month old daughter Quinn.

Scott began playing for Darfield in 1987, joining the Darfield Midgets as a four year old.

“I have played for Darfield most of my life with only a few seasons out; three years at Christchurch Boys High School, a year playing for Burnside and a couple of years overseas playing for Maidstone in Kent,” Scott explained.

“Playing overseas was a great experience and it made me appreciate playing on a dry track, rather than ankle deep in mud,” he laughed. “Playing elsewhere also made me appreciate the Darfield RFC and what a great bunch of people are involved in the Club and the facilities it provides.

When Scott was asked what he loves most about rugby, it was an easy answer, “I love sitting down and having a beer in the changing rooms with my mates after the game.”

Scott is definitely a permanent fixture at DRFC with many describing him as jovial and with a wicked sense of humour.

“His love of, and commitment to, the game is reflected in his longevity on the field.

A love of the natural environment and influence of spontaneity threads the three artists together in Selwyn Gallery’s May exhibition, 'Oil & Water'. While this title suggests two paint media, it has yet another meaning for this Show, since it includes two very different kinds of art - painting and pottery.

Bernadette Parsons has been painting for over twenty years and is one of New Zealand’s foremost water-colourists. She is passionate about painting the humble landscapes near her home, and commented, “spontaneity is something I

&

value most in my paintings, as this is what will make them special,” Bernadette's work is held in private collections nationally and internationally, while books about painting include her work.

Debbie Lambert is a popular tutor and artist of oils and watercolour both in studio and outdoors. She enjoys painting plein air (outdoors) around New Zealand, often in remote locations, and has spent the past thirty years travelling overseas to paint and do workshops with renowned tutors. Over the past twenty years Debbie has received many awards for her works which are now held in private collections both nationally and

internationally.

Allan Hooper was working as a general engineer when he became interested in working with clay. After a visit to the Darfield Brickworks in 1972 searching for a specific kind of brick to build a smelting furnace, Allan began to read about pottery, kilns, and the processes involved in working with clay.

Allan engineered his own potter’s wheel, as well as other machinery and tools for working in clay, and with the knowledge and skill he developed, was able to open Albion Brick & Pottery in Darfield early in 1984. Now in his seventies Allan still enjoys working with clay and firing up his kiln.

It’s that time of the year again when Gnomes Alpine Sports, In Darfield, holds its massive preseason sale. It’s a sale that’s looked forward to by many a keen skier/boarder because of the outstanding bargains to be found on quality equipment.

On Monday, April 23rd Darfield Hotel hosted a ‘Shave for a Cure’ event for local builder, Barry Wright.

Wright Barry joined many others around New Zealand during the month of April who ‘Shaved for a Cure’ to raise funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand in one of this country’s signature fundraising events.

Barry decided to have his hair shaved off in support of his mother, Vicki Wright, Wright who is currently undergoing

chemotherapy.

Being on her own journey with cancer, it seemed only fitting that she had the honour of beginning the process of shaving Barry’s hair off followed by other family members..

Darfield Hotel has been promoting Barry’s shave and Barry’s fundraising page in the hope of getting as many people as possible to donate, all of which helped Barry achieve and surpass his fundraising goal of $500.

At the time of going to print he

had raised $1460 with more, much appreciated, funding still rolling in.

“I'm just grateful people have donated their hard earned money to a good cause, as every little bit helps such a great organisation,” Barry said.

Complete with shaved head it’s time now for Barry to get back to the other things he enjoys including pig hunting and spending time with wife Rebecca, Rebecca who was totally behind him 100% in his ’Shave for a Cure’ dedication.

The Hororata Primary School Pig and Possum hunt took place over the weekend of April 20th to 22nd.

This is the fifth annual event, and saw a large number of entries, in what has become a much talked about and looked forward to competition.

Those keen on hunting enjoyed the challenge of securing the title of heaviest in the event’s varying categories.

Weigh-in closed at 2pm on Sunday. Many came along to enjoy the fantastic, family, fun day beforehand, as well as making the most of the outdoors and the gorgeous weather.

As in previous years there was a range of activities for people to participate in including the ‘Hare Carrying’ and ‘Possum Throwing’ competition, plus ‘Shoot the Turkey’, which were highlights for many.

Children too got to participate in the hunt and were given the opportunity to weigh in pigs, deer, hares or possums. “It is thanks to our great sponsors that we were able to have free entry for those fourteen years and under,” organiser Rebecca Smith said.

The event had some fantastic sponsors again that the

Hororata Primary School PTA sincerely thank for their support.

Though the event is about raising funds for the School, it is also about utilising and patronising local businesses and having an event that brings families and community members together. Funds raised from the event go towards the Hororata Primary School PTA for the benefit of pupils at the School.

methods including secure ground water (to meet current New Zealand Drinking Water Standards), Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, selective abstraction and filtration, and chlorination.

Following the Government’s inquiry into the Havelock North drinking water contamination incident, councils have been urged to ensure the protection of drinking-water sources and effective treatment of supplies for the protection of public health. In response, the Council has accelerated the programme to install UV treatment on secure bores.

Consideration is also being given to chlorination, to provide additional protection. Chlorine provides residual treatment in the water reticulation system which UV does not provide, minimising the impact of any contamination which may enter the distribution system. It is widely used in New Zealand drinking water supplies and is currently used on five supplies

in Selwyn, and soon to be added to two further schemes.

The Government’s position on the chlorination of water supplies is not yet known - and chlorination may become mandatory. If it is not made mandatory, a range of options are available to the Council.

The Council is now seeking comment from the community on options for introducing chlorination to community water supplies.

The options: • Introduce chlorination for water supplies which would receive the greatest benefit, based on a risk assessment.

• Introduce chlorination for all Council water supplies.

• No additional chlorination.

The cost of water treatment is funded by the district-wide rate paid by all properties on a Council supply. The proposal to introduce limited chlorination, as in option 1, will increase the rate by $10.

Consultation closes at 5pm on Friday 4th May.

Selwyn Youth Council are celebrating after the success of the Selwyn Link bus service which ran on April 17th and 19th, and saw over 550 passengers travel between Southbridge and Darfield.

Jason Flewellen, Flewellen Community Development Advisor for Selwyn District Council said the service was a huge success.

The first buses of each day were standing room only and at one stage they had reached capacity, meaning that a few understanding passengers remained behind.

Jason said, “there were plenty of passengers throughout the whole day, and a huge diversity in ages.

“Though the bus link was initially created as a trial in answer to the problem facing youth of not being able to get around Selwyn in the holidays, the opportunity was also taken up by both the elderly and young alike,” Jason said.

“There were those on the buses that had never been to some of the smaller townships before,” he added.

as a great day trip, going through all the towns and stopping off for a cuppa along the way. There were parents with young children enjoying school holidays who were on a bus outing, before heading out shopping.

“Then there were the youth, lots of youth, which was exactly what we wanted to see,” Jason said.

“Either heading into Rolleston to meet with mates, go for a swim or to meet another bus heading into the skatepark in Christchurch.”

Youth Council members were on the buses travelling back and forth gathering data, while Jason and co-workers spent time in cars travelling around the route

making sure everyone was happy.

“The youth council are extremely pleased and excited with the results,” Jason added “They will spend the next couple of months collating the data collected and will then report to Environment Canterbury and the Council. We are hopeful that we can come up with a more permanent solution.

“If nothing comes from this the Youth Council will look at approaching the Vehicle Trusts in the district and see what other solutions there are to move the youth of Selwyn around in the school holidays,” Jason concluded.

Beef+Lamb New Zealand will hold a Field Day at Flock Hill Station, Highway 73 on Thursday, May 3rd.

Flock Hill is an iconic high country station that people drive past on the way to the West Coast. However few people have had an opportunity to have a detailed look at the farm operations and the extensive development work that has been undertaken in recent years. This has turned the property into an effective farming enterprise.

The main highlight of the Field Day will be a farm tour to look at some of this development work and the stock that are being run on Flock Hill.

Flock Hill is located in a harsh environment with long cold winters and hot dry summers making sustainable farming even more challenging than most of the Canterbury foot-hill country. The Field Day will be a great opportunity to see a wide

range of the type of country that this Station is farming and the different management systems that they have put in place.

The control of Wilding Pine has been one of the main aspects of development work and the methods used to control this pest and the financial implications will be fully discussed.

Flock Hill has developed a large area into Lucerne and Lucerne grass forage systems over the past few years. The property is looking at varied forage systems to meet the requirements of this harsh environment. There will be plenty of opportunity for those attending to discuss the aims and objectives of this pasture development with the team from Flock Hill and their Agronomist.

Wool still makes a significant contribution to the financial performance on Flock Hill. The policy adopted will make for

interesting discussion with a representative from The New Zealand Merino Company talking about opportunities and they will answer questions on the topic also.

Representatives from Environment Canterbury will also be in attendance and will discuss the requirements of high country farmers to meet their obligations around water quality and nutrient loss.

On-farm biosecurity has been a topic that has had a lot of publicity in recent times with the saga around M. Bovis. However, there are many other issues in the on-farm biosecurity area that sheep and beef farmers need to be aware of.

Beef+Lamb New Zealand will discuss some of the different threats and ways that farmers can lessen the risks associated with them.

The huge list of stolen cars and licence plates in Canterbury over a one week only period - is sobering. It’s not just in Christchurch either, the scourge is moving ever more close to home. In an initiative which they are aware won’t stop the problem, but may slow it somewhat, the local Malvern Community Patrol group are offering and fitting ‘tamperproof’ screws to car licence

plates. Community patrol members are conscious of the fact that this won’t stop a thief hell-bent on taking something that they will then affix to a stolen vehicle for the purpose of committing crime, but it may well prevent one more plate being added to the growing list of those taken for this intention.

“Complacency is the biggest reason many opportunist crimes can take place,” said Patrol member Errol Ashby.

Ashby “Keeping things locked and secured is the best way to prevent theft, but the addition of these screws to licence plates, may well thwart a thief from acquiring them,” he added.

A team from the Malvern Community Patrol will be in Darfield, opposite the Challenge Service Station this weekend, April 27th and 28th, as well as next weekend May 4th and 5th for the purpose of checking, supplying ‘tamper proof’ screws and re-fixing vehicle plates.

This last month has seen the completion of most of the Clubs’ competitions and championships.

The majority of the Club Champions entered the Centre Champion of Champions competitions with mixed success, but Graeme Hessey has won through to the finals of the Year 1 and 2 division which is to be played on April 28th and 29th and the Club wishes him the best of luck.

On Saturday April 7th the ‘Husband and Wife’ Pairs competition was played and it was reported that Karen and Steve Glassey combined well to take home the trophy.

The very next day Karen was also in another winning combination, this time with Paul

On April 14th, Mary Burke, Burke Phil Rowlands and Willy Bell, playing in the Club Mixed Triples competition, were too good for their opposition on the day and were presented with the Arthur and Irene Pearce Trophy.

Wednesday, April 18th, was the last Club night of the season.

“There was a very good attendance by Club members, despite the cold conditions and the fact that we had to play under lights,” commented Club spokesperson Peter Bickley.

Available for: Recently the Selwyn District Council proposed an extension to Selwyn Aquatic Centre which included: • New programme 25 metre, 8 lane pool valued at $9.3 million • A café with outdoor courtyard valued at $1.1 million • A fitness/wellbeing space valued at $1.6 million.

Since the Selwyn Aquatic Centre opened in 2013 it has become one of the Selwyn district’s most popular recreation facilities.

Attracting users of all ages from throughout Selwyn and beyond, the continuing demand has seen the Centre struggling to accommodate all its customer requirements.

The Council is now proposing to build an additional 25-metre, 8lane programme pool at the Centre. The new pool will be

multi-purpose, accommodating swimming lessons, Aquafitness and casual swimmers.

In response to recent consultation on additional facilities, the project would also include a fitness programming space and a café.

Detailed design and construction would begin this year, and be completed in 2019.

The biggest question is how will this be funded? The Council’s proposed extensions are estimated to cost a total of $12 million.

The cost of the project will be funded by borrowing, repaid by an increase in the swimming pools’ targeted rate.

The consultation process closes at 5pm on Friday, May 4th.

Young ecology student, Tim Logan had the opportunity to showcase his native restoration planting at the first of four sites visited on an annual Plantout Tour last Sunday. The tour is organised each year by Te Ara Kākāriki (TAK) Greenway Canterbury Trust to educate and motivate local people and community groups to revegetate areas in Selwyn back to Native Habitat.

Tim’s West Melton restoration site of about 2,000 native plants provided an inspiring backdrop to the morning tour.

As a high school student back in 2012, he convinced his parents to set aside a portion of the family’s lifestyle block for native revegetation. Since then they have planted about 400 native plants each year with the help of volunteers.

Colin Meurk Landcare Research Ecologist was a key note speaker for the morning session and spoke to the group about the history of the Canterbury Plains and how over the past 150 years the decline of native remnants due to human activity has resulted in there being only 0.5% of native cover. He explained the science behind T AK’s Gre end ot v is io n, “research has shown that birds disperse seeds 2.5km from their source, therefore planting Greendot every five kilometres will ensure a sustainable native landscape.”

During a walk through his Greendot, Tim showed those attending how the tussocks he planted five years ago were now spreading naturally. Visitors were able to view some native trees already high above their heads and native birds are frequent visitors. Tim was hopeful that bellbirds will soon move in permanently.

Before the tour, Mike Bowie, Bowie Lincoln University Entomologist disappeared into the Greendot to see what he could find. He then kept the crowd captivated while he spoke of the resident insects and invertebrate living at the site. Among many, he pointed out a funnel web spider nest in a Coprosma and as he spoke a native yellow admiral butterfly flitted by. “Insects and invertebrate provide the greatest diversity in an environment like this and we can encourage this in our own gardens by providing dark spaces, dead wood, leaf litter or even Weta motels,” Mike said.

He then went on to explain how many insects are dependent on our native plants. For instance, there are ten species who live only on our native Cabbage trees and there is also the Kowhai Moth who only feed on Kowhai.”

The four sites visited across the morning and afternoon tours are part of 57 native Greendots planted in conjunction with Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Trust since 2006. Greendots are patches of native plantings and are part of the Trust’s vision to create a ‘greenway’ linking Canterbury’s mountains to the sea.

Susan Hall and Kevin Dunn’s property in Kirwee had barely a native plant in sight when they purchased the land; just three years ago they began planting their native Greendot. It now contains an impressive 5,000 plants surrounded by wide winding paths. Guests were quite impressed with how established their Greendot was after such a short time with several commenting this had changed their view of native

plants as being too slow growing.

With snow-covered mountains in the background Colin explained to the guests how there are several stages of native restoration. The first stage is usually fast growing but is essential as it acts as protection, or a nursery, for the secondary plantings which may be frost tender, or need shelter. The afternoon tour restoration sites in Hororata and Coalgate were equally inspiring and were ready for understory planting.

For the TAK team, the tour was a wonderful opportunity to come back to see properties they’ve visited several times for planning and planting and to celebrate the success of the projects.

It really is encouraging to think that six years ago Tim’s place was just an empty paddock and now it is a thriving native environment growing well above the visitors heads, supporting a myriad of insects, invertebrate and visiting birds.

For the 25 guests attending in the morning tour it was a chance to learn from the experts how a restoration site like these ones come about and how to get involved.

Whether that be as a volunteer at a Spring planting day, or as a landowner beginning their own Greendot on their family property, the feeling is that each Greendot is the product of many hands and part of a greater plan; a stepping stone.

When asked by the News how

he felt about achieving his 200th Div 1 game, Scott enthusiastically replied, “I feel very fortunate to be playing with such a good bunch of guys and the culture in the team and Club is outst and ing. Pl aying alongside my good mates is one of the main reasons I keep coming back year after year.”

Though Scott jokes that his wife would say it’s time to retire, in reality he plans on seeing where the season takes him. “I have been involved in managing the Country Colts for a couple of years in the past and really enjoyed that side of things. I would still like to be involved in rugby in some way in the future,” Scott concluded.

It was a small but keen group who gathered for our April outing, the last before the weather turns colder. Tai Tapu was our destination to visit Otahuna Lodge and gardens. It is many years since we had visited and the improvements were stunning, not only to the Lodge itself, but also to the gardens, which were really what we had come to see. Head gardener Steve Marcham was our guide for the morning and he took considerable time to tell us of the history and progress of the garden.

The garden’s backbone is mature trees, but a lot of work has been undertaken to re-design the whole. Stopping to feed the pigs at Oinkahuna was a delight, the buckets of apples and acorns were soon demolished. A respectable veggie garden was of great interest and no doubt would have provided a lot of produce over the summer months. So with bright blue skies, warm temperatures and stunning autumn colours, we had a great time, many thanks to Steve for his time and friendly nature. After lunch at the Tai Tapu store we visited the Lincoln wetlands and then went on to Matea Reserve, which was started by High School students back in 2002 in a dis-used shingle pit. This is a community project run along the lines of a native regeneration project and it has been most successful. It was great to see the native trees and other plantings being carried out. We will be indoors for the next few months, but it won’t stop us admiring the amazing colours that nature is showing off at the moment. Enjoy this wonderful spectacle.

A busy time for the Gun Club which commenced on a good day at the Waihora gun club shooting for the Canterbury DTL Shield. The Club was able to field two teams this year with good scores, which on the day were a bit off the pace. Number one team with a score of 96/100 came closest, Duncan Jefferis leading with 20/20 while Number two finished with 93, with Tony Stuart also shooting 20/20.

Several of the Club members participated to varying degrees with some very mixed results.

Some poor weather towards the end of the week long event meant some low scores throughout the field, not just Darfield’s representatives.

Ball trap was Event 1, Tony Stuart and Duncan Jefferis both with 44/50 Bevan Brown well back with 38.

Double Rise Event 2, we expected good performances and were ably led by Ben Sharp with 46/50 which was good enough for 1st Junior. Bevan with 40/50, Duncan 38 and Tony 37.

Minis Event 3, Bevan missed his first two targets then got the rest for 23/25 ending his campaign for this year, Duncan also on 23, Ben finished on 22 and Tony 19.

Event 4 Handicap neither Duncan with 45/50 or Ben with 40 troubled the scorers for this event.

Event 5 18m Triples Duncan was again the best of the club members with 72/75, just three points off the pace with Ben 68 just ahead of Tony on 67.

Event 6 Single Rise and finally a possible for the Club from Ben Sharp who unfortunately was unable to last out the shoot-off.

Duncan was three targets adrift with Tony a further two away.

Event 7 Single Barrel back to just Ben and Duncan with scores of 44 and 42.

And finally Event 8 Point Score, Duncan shot very well in poor conditions, as the cyclone took effect, to score 145/150, with Ben scoring a 135.

With these three all in A Grade a good tussle was looming with Phil Lilley of Mead also on the same score.

Last twenty-five, all or nothing and Robin faded to end up in the C grade shoot-off for second and third with a total of 96/100. A possible for Duncan saw him finish just off the AA shoot-off. Paul and Bevan booked an A Grade showdown for first place with both scoring a third possible to finish on 99.

Afternoon tea was taken ahead of the shoot-offs, and then the contestants took their places.

Paul missed his first target while Bevan smashed his to give Bevan first A Grade and Paul second place. Robin had similar misfortune to end up third in C grade.

Malvern Lions have again held their successful Golf Tournament that will see many community members benefitting. The substantial funds raised from the event have been presented to the Malvern Cancer Support Group.

The Ambrose tournament, which was held on Thursday, April 19th, began with a shotgun (multi-tee) start, in wonderful weather.

“It was a massively successful day,” Elaine Guy, Guy Chair of the Malvern Cancer Support Group said.

It was reported that the weather couldn’t have been more perfect both for organisers and players alike, making for a fun filled day, along with a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.

Members of the Malvern Cancer Support Group, assisted on the day, working tirelessly to provide morning and afternoon teas for the players.

This year there were 104 people entered in the competition. All were there to have a great time and raise funds for a good cause - along with a fair amount of humour and laughter.

There were over 120 much appreciated business sponsors, whose donations made for a fabulous raffle, along with six auctions (two silent).

The Malvern Cancer Support Group is one of the Cancer Society’s voluntary groups providing assistance to people in the Malvern area who have

had a diagnosis of the disease.

They support families in a range of different ways from rides to Christchurch for treatment, petrol costs, home baking and someone to talk to.

Last year alone the Group supported thirty local families by providing fifty-seven rides to Oncology in Christchurch for twenty patients and donating numerous funds for grocery and petrol vouchers, as well as firewood.

“None of this would be possible if it weren’t for donations from the community,” Elaine said.

At the end of the tournament, Tony Mitchell, Mitchell President of Malvern Lions presented Elaine, representing the Support Group, with an initial cheque of $10,000. This will go directly toward supporting cancer patients in the district, with some of the funds going to Darfield Hospital for the purchase of a ‘Sara Stedy’ transfer/lifting device.

“Our biggest thanks go to the Malvern Lions for choosing our Cancer Support Group to support this year and to the fantastic sponsors who all gave so generously,” an appreciative Elaine finished.
