The ‘Bangers to Bluff’ event called through Kirwee on Monday, April 16th, with Kirwee local Glenn Sparrow immediately receiving an email from one of the group, to be passed to members of the Kirwee community and the Kirwee Bowling Club: “Thank you for the fantastic hospitality”. This was in response to the magnificent morning tea provided for the travellers.

The arrival of twelve cars at the Kirwee Reserve, saw volunteers ready to serve a morning tea which would fuel participants up for their journey over the great divide from Christchurch to Greymouth, as part of an annual fundraiser organised by the Half Moon Bay Rotary Club in Auckland.

Every year competitors buy ‘Bangers’ (cheap cars under $2000) and drive on ‘roads less travelled’ from Auckland, all the way to Bluff, and do so over an eleven day period. After the last photo stop in Bluff the cars will be sold off at an auction to help raise funds for their chosen charities. The cars certainly were ‘bangers’, ranging from an Audi with very broken suspension, to a Toyota with a

horn that, much to the delight of the children, sounded like an amorous rooster.

This year the chosen charities were Multiple Sclerosis NZ and Hopeworks NZ (who provide support to people with head injuries). Malcolm Rickerby, Rickerby the president of MSNZ, was full of praise for the organisers and thanked them for helping raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis across NZ, a neurological condition affecting 4,000 kiwis, with almost 700 of those being in Canterbury region.

The excitement is building for the Hororata Night Glow, an event which is promising a spectacular and unique experience with tethered hot air balloons set to light up the night sky, surrounded by a vibrant autumn festival.

Balloonists are travelling from all over New Zealand with Ballooning Canterbury Pilot, Michael Oakley coordinating the balloons for the event.

“One of the appeals for balloonists to come to an event such as this, is the chance to fly in a different area with a group of other balloon enthusiasts,” Michael explained.

Ballooning Canterbury has organised the Hororata fly-in prior to the Night Glow event.

“The crews are arriving earlier in the week so that we can have some flights together if the weather allows. The crews will be billeted with local families and are looking forward to enjoying all our community has to offer,” Michael added.

One of the facets of ballooning that adds a certain romanticism, that has largely been lost to

other forms of flying, is that it holds to certain small traditions, some of which go back to ballooning's origins in France.

One of these traditions is for the pilot/aeronaut to present the landowner, on whose property the balloon makes its final landing, with a ceremonial bottle of champagne/bubbles.

“Hot air balloons are at the mercy of the wind somewhat so when and where we fly early in the mornings will only be decided just prior to launching,” Michael commented. “We will always endeavour to respect people’s property, especially when it comes to landing.

Those who have, over the past few years, enjoyed the ambience and dining experience at The Terrace, in Darfield, can rest easy knowing that under changed ownership this will continue. New owners Deb and Ray O’Connell are no strangers to great customer service, while knowing and catering to their target market, along with being friendly and congenial hosts.

Already owning the Darfield Hotel the couple have proven their ability to supply the area with a great place to socialise

and enjoy. The Terrace will continue this trend, but in keeping with its history, size and location offer it in a slightly different fashion.

Deb and Ray have employed a European chef to bring a hint of international cuisine to their new venture, but many of the favourite dishes on The Terrace menu will remain, as will all the familiar staff, under their new ownership.

“We do have some changes planned for the future,” Deb explained. “As with any new venture we do want to implement some individuality, but it’s been running well and so we don’t want to alter things unnecessarily. We have listened to customers and plan to initiate an area for a casual cafe/bar in the future, which many have asked us to include.”

With The Terrace’s future now secure, locals, and those passing through, can partake of lunchtime and evening dining just as they always have done.

At the Hororata Night Glow the balloons are tethered to the ground during the Glow as they perform to music, they are not airborne. People will be able to meet the pilots, walk through a cold inflated balloon and participate in demonstrations with the University of Canterbury as they explore Bernoulli’s principle and the science behind hot air balloons. This, along with the live music, activities, stalls and amazing line up of food vendors will make for a vibrant festival definitely not to be missed.

Local father and businessman, Steve Roberts along with his thirteen year old daughter, Charlotte, Charlotte and colleague Keith Ballisat headed off to Blenheim recently to compete in the annual ‘Forrest Graperide’.

The race, held on April, 7th was a fantastic opportunity for father and daughter to do together what they love, cycling.

Steve, Charlotte and Keith joined around 1,500 other riders on the day to take on the challenge through the stunning picturesque landscape.

This year’s race saw 300 more entrants than last year, when numbers dipped following the 2016 earthquake.

The race offers a range of options for entrants of all skill sets and abilities.

Event organiser Duncan MacKenzie said, “our event is abo ut everyd ay p eop l e proving themselves to themselves.”

For thirteen year old Charlotte, this was her first road event, having previously taken part in several mountain bike races.

It was a sunny warm day for the event which saw Charlotte finish the 42km ‘Taste’ event in 1hr 31min, for second place in the 13 to 18 year-old girls and 43rd place overall from a massive 196 starters.

“It was a fun event, and I am keen to have another go next year. It’s a bit scary at the start with so many other cyclists around, many who have never bunch ridden before,” Charlotte commented.

Fortunately Charlotte, who rides with the Darfield Sunday bike group, was used to riding in a bunch.

“I would like to thank the Darfield group for their support and encouragement, as well for

the loan of bikes and other equipment,” Steve said.

Steve and Keith rode in the ‘Graperide’ event, a 100km ride from Blenheim to Picton around the Sounds to Havelock and back to the start. This event was also a qualifier event for the Grand Fondo World Champs (an event for amateur riders).

Steve finished in the lead bunch in 2hrs 34min for fourteenth place overall and third in the 34 to 39 age group.

“It was a good day out and although I didn’t ride as well as I would have liked I was still happy with the result,” Steve said.

“Keith took nearly an hour off his time from last year, so that was a great result as well.”

The whole day finished up with the traditional grape crush which is to be made into Rose wine for next year's competitors.

The children, who had been practicing their singing, chose some items to sing and dance for the special visitors. When the ladies arrived, the children greeted them and were extremely interested in who everyone was.

The children loved play with the visitors, along with sharing what they enjoyed doing. This included building with magnets, showing off the family corner, as well as the outside area, all of which was followed up with hitting the balloon around the room.

The children sang beautifully, and when it came to singing nursery rhymes, the ladies Lizzy (from Fitzroy) and Hugo spending time together building. joined in with them, singing and doing the actions. The children performed Sleeping Bunnies, Baby Shark, and Slippery Fish songs, making sure they did all the actions with the songs, where needed.

The ladies then played and talked some more with the children before they headed off for a well-deserved cup of tea.

Anyone who’s visited The Darfield Library in recent weeks, may have noticed the Waitangi Day Picnic Quilt on display. The quilt top was put together at this year’s Waitangi Day event, by local group The Malvern Material Girls, with a lot of help from members of the public who attended the Picnic. Passersby were encouraged to have a go on one of the sewing machines available, joining the hundreds of pieces to make the quilt top.

The quilt is now finished, and looking for a home! Nominations of a deserving recipient are welcomed and can be made at the Library.

The closing day of the Kirwee Bowling Club for the season was held on Saturday, April 7th in lovely sunny conditions.

Closing day is always the time when all the Women’s Club winners play off against the Men’s winners. It’s reported to be a fun day, but nevertheless the bowls being played are very serious. The trophies played for are the Jenkins and Harrison silver trays. This year it was the men who won, but the women are already looking forward to taking these silver trays back next season! Club spokesperson Mabel Knight said, “Kirwee Bowling Club is in good heart despite not having the use of their Clubrooms this season, while their new Clubhouse has been under construction.

“These new premises are almost ready and look great,” she added. “Lots of hard work and dedication has gone on behind the scenes during the

various building stages.

“During the past season both the women and the men have taken part in most Malvern fixtures and some of the Christchurch Interclub fixtures too, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with other bowlers. “ Ou r g r e e n, an d i ts surrounding gardens always receive great comments from outside bowlers and we thank sincerely our Greenkeeper Ray Gr igg and our much appreciated gardening team,” Mabel concluded.

Plans are well underway for this year’s ANZAC service in Darfield.

Following last year’s services, one at the Cenotaph at 8:45am, followed by a service in Trinity Church, there was discussion about the wisdom, or need, for two separate services, and a desire to combine them. This is primarily a response to the growing attendance at the 8.45am service and elements held in the second service are appropriate for the first.

After consulting with the Malvern RSA, Township Committee, Trinity Church, Westmar and local ministers it has been agreed to have the one service which will combine elements of both services.

This will be held at the Cenotaph at 8.45am, followed by morning tea in Trinity Church.

Some additions to the service will include the National Anthem and a biography of a local soldier who went to war. Some seating will be provided for the very elderly.

If the weather is inclement organisers will be able to move ceremonies to the Trinity Church without much interruption.

Terry Hutchinson is the local RSA Secretary and pastor Paul Cossey leads the service. The Township Committee will provide morning tea.

Following the 2015 ANZAC service at Greendale when the one hundredth anniversary of the Gallipoli landing was commemorated, which was very much appreciated by the large number who attended, a service will be held this year to commemorate the last year of World War One. The New Zealand Mounted Rifles Trust will attend the service with around twenty-five horses and riders.

This has particular significance for the Selwyn District as it was from its rural areas that both soldiers and horses came to

make up the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Regiment.

Thirteen of the soldiers who are recorded on the Greendale Memorial Gates were in the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry which became part of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Regiment which became part of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade who fought at Gallipoli and the Middle East.

On Anzac Day the horses will ride down Mills Road to Warrens Road, then to Coaltrack Road and along Bridge Road to Greendale Road. If time is short, or the day is wet, they will take

the shorter route from Mills Road along Greendale Road to the Domain.

The New Zealand Mounted Rifle Trust are also setting up a display.

The guest speaker will be Major Karl Maddaford, Maddaford Officer Commanding A company, 2/4 RNZIR. The service will be followed by afternoon tea in the hall.

More than sixty vintage and veteran cars, along with their drivers have indicated that they will participate in the inaugural ‘Dutton Garage Malvern Anzac Run’ starting from the Darfield Recreation Centre on Anzac Day. Organisers report that everyone is welcome to come to the Recreation Centre to see the cars between 10am and 11am, before the motorcade tours through Darfield, Sheffield, Coalgate, Hororata and Glenroy. The cars will then travel on to Glentunnel where they will once again be available for viewing in the Hororata Golf Club car park.

One of the two oldest vehicles in the event will be the 1912 Wolseley 12/16 owned by Colin and Jenny Hey of West Melton, which on this occasion will be driven by their son Matthew of Darfield.

Several Darfield High School pupils will also have the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the back of another 1912 vehicle, an Albion owned by Don Bennetts of Christchurch.

Albion trucks were frequently used as troop transport during the First World War. “This one has a very interesting history,” commented event organiser Malcolm McGibbon, McGibbon “in that it was imported into New Zealand in

Later it was traded-in at Cockram Motors in Christchurch for, of all things, a bicycle. It is believed to be one of only three of this type remaining in the world today.”

Of the sixty vehicles participating eleven are over 100 years old and they include Ford Model T’s in various forms, a very rare American car from 1913 called an Empire, an extremely rare Italian Nazzaro dated from 1914 and a Renault from the same year.

“To recognise the importance of these very old cars a commemorative badge has been made and will be presented to the owners by Roydon Mauger of Dutton Garage and these will no doubt be attached to the cars and become a part of their history,” Malcolm said.

“Other cars of the vintage era include Bugatti, Essex, Austin, Chevrolet, Dodge, Overland, Ford, Buick and Oakland. All names that were once common place on New Zealand roads,” Malcolm

added.

The run is organised by Darfield resident and Vintage Car Club member Malcolm, who will be travelling with his wife Anita in their 1914 Renault, a car that has a recorded history from new.

The couple’s two sons Bevan and Kieran, Kieran along with their partners, will also be participating in their 1916 Ford Model T Speedster and 1931 Ford Model A Tourer.

“It’s such an important day for all New Zealanders and to be able to commemorate it with family is special,” Malcolm said. “We are also appreciative of the support given by Dutton Garage, Terry Hutchinson of the local RSA, Jason and Jarnia Kupe of the Willows Golf Cafe and of course the Malvern News in their promotion of this community event,” he said.

“Come along to the Darfield Recreation Centre between 10 and 11am on Anzac Day, entry is free, or come out to your gate and watch and wave as they go by. You will be sure to get a wave back,” Malcolm concluded.

Have you seen our new Kinetic Sculpture? That is the question going around at West Melton School. The story of the new sculpture begun in 2016, when Helen Trappitt, Trappitt (a director at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers), held a presentation for the year 5 and 6 learners at West Melton School.

The presentation was about the engineering of sculptures in conjunction with ‘The Power of Art’ inquiry that classes were looking at with teachers Jo Buckenham and Bronwen Seaward.

decided to set up a design competition with the support of principal Sue Jackson.

Jackson Learners produced drawings or prototypes of their design ideas and from there a group of finalists presented their designs to Helen and Sue for judging.

This led to Otis' design being selected as the winner.

Helen then project managed, engineered and partly funded the fabrication of Otis’ winning designed sculpture.

Once it was ready Cam Seaward assisted by coordinating the paint job of the sculpture, making sure it had a professional finish that would

withstand the elements.

The whole process would not have been possible without the kind donations and support from businesses and community members who helped with different areas of the design process, as well as by providing the materials and time this year to install the sculpture.

“I feel really proud when I see it up there, hopefully it gets windy enough to spin the W and M,” Otis said! “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and would like to thank everyone involved- especially Helen, Cam and Mrs Jackson”.

On Thursday, April 12th, Darfield St John Youth Cadets Hannah Ireland, Jenny Walter and Sarah Gillespie each presented a small speech to the Malvern Area St John Committee. This was in appreciation of the support that the Committee has given them since being selected to represent Darfield at the annual national competitions.

The three local girls, who were selected as part of a squad of twenty-four cadets, will be competing at the National Youth

Festival 2018, which is to take place in Nelson starting on April 20th.

Lynda Walter, Walter Darfield St John Youth Divisional Manager said, “the girls have been training hard for the last two months over seven weekends. The practices have included first aid, drills and communications.

The Festival sees St John cadets from all around central and northern regions coming together to compete against the southern region for the overall

championship in the four day event.

The competitions are challenging, fast paced and exciting, and are packed full of entertainment and activities designed to engage and stimulate St John Cadets. Cadets will demonstrate confidence and expertise as they respond to realistic and complex casualty simulation tests.

"This is my first year in Nationals,” Jenny said. “I'm feeling nervous, very excited and slightly overwhelmed as I do not know what the scenarios will bring! I am so grateful to be able to have the opportunity to gain new life skills, new memories, travel, make lifelong friends and represent the South Island.”

The cadets thank the Malvern Area St John Committee for all their support, which covers not only travel, but accommodation, uniform and jackets.

The M.G. Begg Memorial Trophy, is a new trophy for the Malvern Tennis Sub-Association and is awarded to a person, nominated by their Club, in recognition of ha ving ma de s ignifica nt contribution to tennis in the Malvern district. The trophy can be awarded for a wide range of things including playing, administration, organising a competition or event, fundraising or any activity where a Club believes an individual has contributed in a significant way to tennis in the local region.

The Trophy has been awarded for the first time to Peter Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald For many years Peter has represented West Melton Club as a Malvern Tennis delegate to meetings. He has represented Malvern in the inter-region Browning Shield competition and Veteran Tennis matches, as well as organising players for the Veteran teams. He has represented and selected Canterbury Country Veterans teams at both local and national levels. Peter has also been involved with West Melton tennis juniors and organising Malvern junior rep teams. In January he also organised and managed the annual Malvern Veterans’ fundraiser tournament in Kirwee.
