The annual Shave for a Cure week, which has seen thousands of Kiwis go bald over the last sixteen years, was held this year from March 19th 25th. Brave ‘shavees’ have been busy raising money to support the estimated 21,000 New Zealanders living with a blood cancer or related blood condition.

Last year close to 2,000 individuals, businesses, schools, and community groups shaved raising over $1.25 million for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).

This year New Image Hair Studio held a Shave for a Cure event on Saturday, March 24th. Their hairdressing apprentice, Lauren Hawkins, Hawkins along with Alex Mohi (husband to Lisa Mohi, Mohi New Image Salon Manager and Chief Stylist) both chose to take up the challenge while raising

funds for the cause.

Lauren has been working at New Image for four months and, until Saturday, had long locks of gorgeous hair. When asked by the News why she decided to ‘Shave for a Cure’ this year, she replied “I decided to do it this year in honour of my grandmother who sadly passed away many years ago, as well as showing support and encouragement to one of my close friends in England who is currently battling Leukaemia.”

Lauren had her hair tied up in pigtails and her parents Debbie and Simon Hawkins had a pigtail each to cut off. Once they were done, friend Brianna Steele had a turn shaving off what was left of Lauren’s hair before Lisa shaved off the balance leaving the Salon apprentice almost totally bald.

Local spectators will be treated to a spectacular array of vehicles in the inaugural Dutton Garage Malvern Run to be held on Anzac Day in the district.

“Vintage car owners will tour the Malvern district on Anzac Day in cars and on motorcycles dating back to the early 1900's in tribute to those who gave their lives in the service of our country,” explained event organiser and vintage car enthusiast Malcolm McGibbon of Darfield.

The run will begin at the Darfield Community Centre and will be preceded by a display of the vehicles where everyone is welcome, this will be followed by a short Anzac service, and a parade through Darfield.

The shavees attracted a small crowd of supporting spectators, as well as many more watching them live on Facebook, all of which helped with donations.

Collectively, at the time of going to print, Lauren and Alex had raised $957, with people still donating after seeing the videos.

The 2018 fundraising target for Shave for a Cure is $1.2 million.

As secondary and tertiary teachers, the artists featuring in the current Selwyn Gallery exhibition have encouraged their students to develop their skills farther than the curriculum requires - beyond the syllabus and inspired them to embark on careers as artists.

Brent Firkin attended Canterbury School of Fine Arts and Christchurch College of Education. He has worked in various art studios in New Zealand as a graphic artist and for some years was Art Director for The Christchurch Press.

Brent set up his own studio gallery in Oxford, making and selling his well known Oxford Pottery, but began painting seriously nine years ago. He served as Head of Art at Oxford Area School for twenty-two years.

Simon Ogden holds a first-class Honours degree in Sculpture, and a Master’s in Painting. He has been involved in the teaching of Fine Arts for many years and has established and curated many exhibitions with students and ex-students.

Simon has been instrumental in funding a major art residency open to early to mid-career New Zealand artists.

Kate Rivers has taught at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in the Art Department since 1999. Kate received the 2016 ISNZ Honours Award for Service to

Art Education.

She is an active member of Canterbury Art Teachers’ Association and Aotearoa NZ Association of Art Educators and is involved in organising the

2020 national conference in Christchurch.

Jan Robertson began her study of painting and sculpture as an adult student, specialising in sculpture whilst studying at the

University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. She is currently Art HOD at Rangiora High School.

Fiona Van Oyen is a recent Master’s graduate from the Dunedin School of Art. She has been teaching secondary school art for the past sixteen years: first at Darfield High School, and currently at Cashmere High School.

Fiona has exhibited throughout New Zealand and is the 2017 winner of the Zonta Ashburton Female Art Award.

There’s much community preparation for the commemoration of Anzac Day 2018 taking place at Darfield Library and Service Centre.

On April 5th and 12th it’ll be poppy creation and Anzac

stories at the Library. Those attending can produce a poppy (knit, crochet, felt) for the Malvern Anzac Centenary Poppies Project. For anyone who needs assistance there will be volunteers from The Hub to help with learning how. At the same time, listen to and share family Anzac Stories.

As George and Julz Ridgen prepare to hand over ownership of the Terrace Winebar and restaurant to new owners, they reflect on their five and a half years at the helm.

“There have certainly been some amazing highlights,” the couple commented, “and some humourous, mildly, annoying ones too,” they added with a laugh.

“We’ve learnt all aspects of ‘hospo’,” George and Julz said, “from front of house, to kitchen hand and we have even undertaken chef duties,” they added. “Add to this, accounts, book work, staff rosters and stock ordering, and we’ve pretty much covered the whole spectrum!”

As with any job involving customers (whoever said ‘the customer is always right’ - has obviously never had a job with

customers!), there have been moments of tongue-biting to ensure the situation doesn’t escalate out of control.

“Fortunately we have the most wonderful staff who have on occasions had to endure finger clicking customers wanting instant attention, altercations between patrons on band nights, but probably the final straw was the woman, who no matter how hard we tried, everything was wrong.” (“I came close to suggesting she may like to cook her own spare -ribs,” George added with a laugh.)

George and Julz cannot speak highly enough of their staff not just their current ones, but also those who have worked with them over the years.

“We always had a family ‘vibe’ going on within the team,” the couple said. “Our ‘two i c’ Rosie Wise has been an outstanding

manager, running things efficiently, smoothly and with panache, while chef Nick Luscombe’s outstanding meals, menu skills and busy-night hard work are legendary. Long serving staff member Margaret Penrose has been with the Terrace for eighteen years and we can’t praise her pride in her work enough.”

For now George and Julz are looking forward to some down time, having a holiday, spending time with the last two of their children who have yet to fly the nest and to complete some long awaited tasks about their home.

“Who knows what new adventures await,” they added.

“We have learnt a lot over the past five years and sincerely thank our family, friends, staff and the community for all their support,” the pair concluded.

When last Saturday morning dawned the Ellesmere Business and Promotions (EBaP) committee were rather apprehensive, as they surveyed the downpour at 6am. Months of planning and hard work for their alwayssuccessful and looked-forward -to Fete looked as if it may have been in vain as they watched the rain falling.

“After spending quite some time on Friday mapping and marking the numbers for the stalls on the street, we arrived to find that during the night the rain had washed the majority away,” said Kath Mentink a spokesperson for the organisers.

“However by 8am the rain had stopped, and the weather, as fo recast , brightened up to a lovely fine, warm day. A few of the vendors made an early decision not to attend, but

130 took the risk and got the advantag e of a we ll organised, enjoyable day.

“It was difficult to estimate the number of people attending, as the Fete has now spread out to three main areas. The development of the children’s area and the secret garden proved to be a huge success and will be a popular feature in future Fetes.”

It was reported that there was a wonderful atmosphere; friendly and relaxed, with families obviously enjoying the day out, as well as the entertainment provided by the Ellesmere big band and the Ellesmere Celtic band.

“I thank both the hard working EBaP committee for all the volunteer hours they have put into making this Fete day so successful, and the community for supporting us by attending,” Kath concluded.

Owners, Kayla Marshall, Marshall along with Shaun and Caitlin Clark aim to bring people in West Melton and its surrounds, a modern approach to physiotherapy. The trio believe in always treating the patient, and not just the injury. For them, this means treating the underlying cause of an injury which enables the patient to have a much faster recovery time. It also reduces the chance of re-injury, as they don’t employ the 'band-aid’ approach, which sees patients returning time after time, with the same injury.

There is a clear four-step process, that the team at PhysioSteps Selwyn follow as a way to achieve their goal of fixing the patient, and not just the injury.

The first appointment is used to give the patient a clear diagnosis and explanation of what is going on for them and the team will also spend time finding out the underlying issue that caused the injury in the first place.

Once this has been done the symptoms are treated by utilising effective hands-on manual therapy, combined with appropriate exercises for the patient to do at home, inbetween sessions.

The team then looks at treating the underlying cause of the injury.

When the patient has fully recovered, rehabilitation exercises are explained and initiated to help them get back into normal life.

one-hour running screen, which looks at strength, flexibility and running technique. Shaun then gives tips on any improvements.

The clinic is aimed at any level of runner.

Year 10, Rolleston College student, Ella Benn, Benn can never be called a quitter.

As a nine year, she was an active and fit runner representing Canterbury in the cross country team when her knees became too painful to run. Having no success with physiotherapy she was sent for an x-ray which revealed she had bone cancer and started chemotherapy immediately.

“I had treatment for nine months, which for a ten year old seemed like years,” Ella commented. “I lost all of my hair and had to have my leg amputated,” she explained. “I chose a surgery called rotationplasty, where the doctors took out my knee, rotated my lower leg 180 degrees and reattached it to my upper leg; my ankle now works as my knee.”

None of this has deterred Ella from being active and she was determined to re-learn old skills.

One such skill was swimming. “I have always loved swimming, I felt like I belonged in the water,” Ella added. ‘It wasn't until Sophie Pascoe visited in hospital that I felt I truly wanted to be a competitive swimmer.”

Since then she has worked tirelessly to achieve her goal and many would say surpassed it.

Ella has gone on to win ribbons and medals, as well as gaining an award for ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at her swim club. She was also named ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at Rolleston College, and received the ‘Emerging Talent’ award from ParaFed Canterbury.

Ella set herself another goal. “I wanted to become a Paralympic swimmer,” she enthused. Ella has now become a member of the Paralympic Potential Programme (development squad) with Paralympics New Zealand. She undertakes training several times a week

and also attends sessions in Auckland.

Unfortunately, she has had two relapses, the first was a small tumour on the edge of her right lung. The second relapse was last August where she had the whole lower lobe of her right lung removed.

Sandra Benn, Benn Ella’s mother said, “it didn’t slow her down, even when in a great deal of

pain she was back in the pool whenever she could. Doctors were amazed at her strengthespecially when she got back in the water thirteen days after her lobectomy!

Ella told the News, her biggest challenge has been her mindset. “Having a positive attitude all the time and never giving up is the key,” she concluded.

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd Local twenty-one year old, Seth Groom, Groom has been developing his game NYKRA (pronounced nighkrah)for some time, and finally he is polishing it up and preparing for its launch later this year.

The News asked Seth some questions about this development: How did you get into game development?

I started programming when I was about nine years old. My father taught me some basics, and I improved over the years.

When I was in Year 7-8 at school I started to learn that people could make and sell games, all by themselves. From there I knew I had to get better to be able to do such a thing.

What goes into making a game?

Most games have a core ‘game mechanic’ that drives the direction of the experience.

Making this ‘mechanic’ requires a design angle and a sense of ergonomics. Once you have an idea you have to program out the ‘engine’ of the game, to make things work properly.

Then, once everything works at a basic level, you fill it with art.

For me, this has taken more than four years to get things to a point where it's playable!

Is this your fulltime job?

Technically, yes. Making games takes a ridiculous amount of time, so I put all my hours and effort into it.

Can you tell us about your game, Nykra? Where did the

idea come from?

NYKRA (pronounced nigh-krah) is a story-game about the first born galaxy in existence. You play as a humanoid being, called Keu (pronounced like ‘Q') who has to discover where she came from, as you travel through seven planets of different histories. It's a story and dialogue heavy game that is filled with complex puzzles and technology.

I came up with the idea six or seven years ago while drawing random things. It's grown a lot since then, and now it has expansive lore that I'm incredibly proud of.

Do you have anyone assist you or is it solely you on the job?

I do absolutely everything for the game. Audio, art, design, code, advertising. It's been hectic, but worth it so far!

How long has it taken you to develop it?

The current and final prototype has been in development for almost three years. This is the version I'm polishing up and preparing for release when the time comes.

How long to do you spend working on it each week?

I spend almost every waking moment on it. And if I'm not, I'm thinking about it. This can be from about eleven to fourteen hours every day.

Seth has recently been getting inspiration and motivation from fellow game developers from around the world while

attending the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

What does going to GDC mean for you? Can anyone go?

Anyone can go to GDC. For me, it's the perfect opportunity to meet developers from around the globe. I connected with friends from Twitter, and met some of my idols. It was a great opportunity to socialise with people and show them who I am and what I do. I had a couple of fans come up to me, which was amazing! I'm currently taking motivation and inspiration from it all, to drive me to the finish line! It was so amazing to hear that people liked the game, and that really makes it all feel worth while.

When the rain could be heard pelting on the roof early on Show Day, the A & P committee possibly had some anxious moments. However the sun shone and the day turned out just perfectly - not too hot, nor too cold “The show went really well,” said A & P Association secretary Rebecca Stewart, Stewart “the sun was shining, it was a beautiful day and there were good numbers through the gate. Entries were up in the horse, cattle and sheep sections, while in other sections the entries were around the same as previous years.

Construction is underway on an advanced plant that will reduce the amount of groundwater extracted for Fonterra’s Darfield manufacturing site by around 70 per cent.

Darfield is already a world leading facility and the $11 million investment in water processing technology will have a significant impact on its environmental footprint.

“Thanks to the new plant we’ll save the equivalent of around 100 tanker loads of water every day,” said Robert Spurway, Spurway Head of Fonterra’s Global Operations. “As well as reducing water use, the new technology also decreases the amount of water the site discharges for irrigation. It’s a win-win situation.”

The new plant uses a reverse osmosis technique to purify the water extracted from cow’s milk during the manufacturing process. Water is passed through a membrane filtration system which makes it drinkable and suitable for use in a range of onsite activities such as cooling, heating and cleaning.

The Darfield development aligns

with Fonterra’s six water commitments to help improve the quality of New Zealand’s waterways.

“We’re prioritising investment to reduce water consumption.

Last year we announced our 2020 target to reduce the amount of water we use across ou r 2 6 N ew Z ea l a nd manufacturing sites by 20 per cent,” Robert said. “The new plant will go a significant way towards helping us achieve our target, creating a

manufacturing site that’s more self-sufficient.”

The new plant is expected to be up and running by October this year, in time for the 2018/2019 milk season.

“I’m proud that we’re able to make this sort of contribution to the environment and massively reduce the amount of water we draw here locally,” added Shane Taylor, Taylor Acting Darfield Operations Manager, following news about the new site.

Selwyn District Council has just adopted its Long-Term Plan Consultation Document, Fast Forward ’28, for public consultation. Consultation will open on Wednesday, April 4th and run until Friday, May 4th online at www.selwyn.govt.nz and from local libraries.

Fast Forward ’28 sets out the key projects and activities the Council is planning over the next ten years and how these will be funded. Average annual rate rises of 4% are forecast over the next ten years.

“Selwyn is now the third-largest district in the South Island, after Christchurch and Dunedin,” said Mayor Sam Broughton, “and we “

are planning to ensure our infrastructure and facilities meet our communities’ needs,” he said.

The Consultation Document outlines proposed new projects, as well as developments already scheduled as part of the Co u nc i l’ s p l an n ed wo rk programme.

The Council is proposing to introduce a new district-wide rating system for community centres, halls and reserves. It will help smaller communities by ensuring funding is available for improvements and upgrades, which have otherwise proven to be unaffordable for smaller communities.

Autumn has arrived but hopefully there will be a continuation of the settled weather that we have enjoyed over the summer. Competitions and tournaments so far have been completed without interference by the weather, except for our own Farmers’ Tournament which had to be cancelled due to water on the green.

There have been some good results for West Melton bowlers in the Centre Competitions. West Melton 1 came third equal in the 8’s competition and in the Under 8’s (junior) Paul Williams and Ken Sharplin made the play

-offs, but unfortunately lost their first play-off game. But a good effort overall from these bowlers.

Congratulations to Paul Williams and Bill Paekau who won the Men’s Club Championship Pairs.

This was a very closely contested game throughout, but their opponents, Ron McNicholl and Bob Shorter just couldn’t quite get their nose in front, losing by just two points.

Congratulations also to this year’s winners of the Mike Pero Ken Sharplin sponsored Club Super Pairs competition who were Mike Leigh, Leigh Ken May and David Gooch.

On March 17th, Kirwee Bowling Club challenged West Melton for the LeCompte Cup. This is an annual local derby, but unfortunately for Kirwee, West Melton were up for the challenge and retained the cup with an emphatic nine games to one, win. With the 17th also being St Patrick’s day, bowlers were encouraged to dress appropriately for the occasion and at the end of the day prizes were presented to Tony Gallon and Ana Gooch for being the ‘best dressed’ Man and Woman.

Social bowls is progressing nicely with full greens and at time of writing we have one game to play. There have been some really good scores with most teams recording personal bests.

It will also fund the large facilities needed as a district.

Three new community centres are proposed to be built over the next ten years. Hororata and Prebbleton would replace older halls which are no longer meeting local needs while a new purposebuilt centre at Leeston would help to meet the increasing demand for community facilities in the township.

Community feedback is sought on whether to introduce chlorination as an added protection to household water supplies in some areas. A number of water schemes in Selwyn are already chlorinated.

Other major projects proposed in the plan include an extension to the Council’s Rolleston offices, and associated parking space.

Also proposed is a new community grants scheme, which brings several existing schemes together and a new rating structure for the district’s water race system. Feedback is also being sought on the Council’s updated Walking and Cycling Strategy.

The plan also outlines an extensive continuing programme of ro ading p rojects and

improvements, a major expansion of the Pines Resource Recovery Park, improvements to recreation facilities and reserves, and continuing improvements to water, wastewater and stormwater systems.

In 2018/19, the average forecast rate increase per ratepayer is 5.7%, reflecting the expenditure on substantial district projects including the proposed indoor courts complex, Selwyn Aquatic Centre extension and major roading improvements, including connections with the new Christchurch Southern Motorway extension.

Sam said the proposals in the plan represent a balance between completing the projects that communities need and continue to ask for, and keeping rates affordable.

“Any increase in rates can be hard but providing Council infrastructure and services costs money so this next month is when we want to hear your feedback,” he said.

“During the consultation period councillors and I will be at many community events to share where we are going and to listen to ideas or concerns.”
