The 2017/18 Darfield Touch season has seen the number of teams/participants grow yet again. There were 28 mixed competition grade teams preChristmas and 24 postChristmas. In the junior programme (aged twelve and under) there were up to eighty kids playing and learning the game pre-Christmas, and 55

post-Christmas.

Competition organisers and players give a huge thank you to Terina Graham and Joseph Wineera for their guidance and d e l iv e ry o f th e jun io r programme which saw players develop their understanding of, and skills in, the game, significantly during the season.

They also thank all their

volunteer parent and high school student coaches.

It’s almost time again for the much looked-forward-to biennial Sheffield Fire Brigade Wings and Wheels - gates open at 7:30am.

The event will take place on April 7th (postponement day April 8th, if wet) on the picturesque, Kimberley Road farm, owned by Charlie and Jo Draper.

Draper This is the sixth time Wings and Wheels has been run, spanning twelve years of careful and efficient organisation. It promises to be another amazing display of wheeled vehicles and aircraft, along with numerous supporting stalls. There’s a massive amount of behind the scenes planning, contacting, and general organisation to get something of this scale off the ground (pardon the pun).

“We have a good number of stall holders confirmed,” said Nev Croy, Croy Sheffield Fire Chief and spokesperson for the organisers. “For some it’s the first time they have attended, but we have ensured there’ll be plenty of hot food and drinks available.”

Wings and wheels really does offer something for everyone, from static displays to planes in the air - ensuring entertainment for all.

“There will be planes, helicopters, cars, trucks and tractors on display, along with a great selection of model planes.

The demonstration of the remote control jet was a highlight for many last time and it will be here again. This 1/19th scale model is capable of 200 kilometres per hour and flies for approximately six minutes with a

full fuel tank,” Nev reported.

The New Zealand Fire service will bring along its kitchen fire display, plus the children evacuation tunnel, both sparked (and another pun!) much conversation at the last event.

“We’re also hopeful of attracting one of the Christchurch Airport’s very large fire

appliances,” Nev added.

“We want to make this Wings and Wheels one of our best yet, so come along and have a look.

If you have a vehicle of interest and would like to display it, please get in touch with me,” Nev concluded.

Sunday, March 18th was the annual City2Surf fun run or walk involving a huge number of Cantabrians. Among the crowd were sixteen Canterbury Firefighters from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), along with some of their family members, who took on the fourteen kilometre walk clad in firefighting gear! The event began at Centennial park, Cashmere and finished in Ferrymead.

The group who took on the challenge consisted of a mix of firefighters from Akaroa, Darfield Rural and Urban, Bottle Lake and Brooklands.

The Urban firefighters wore their complete firefighter attire and Breathing Apparatus (BA) set weighing up to 25 kilograms.

Not to be outdone the Rural team kitted up with all their gear and carried a similar weight.

“We wore our firefighting gear for a variety of reasons,” Darfield Firefighter, Philip Hunt, one of the entrants, explained.

“For me it’s the challenge of the weight, heat, and in this case the distance. As well as this, it’s also an opportunity to meet the public, have pictures taken and have a laugh or two. I am sure the rest of the team feels the same.”

It was a slow start for the firefighting team, however as the crowd started to thin they soon picked up the pace and managed to maintain six kilometres an hour until the last kilometre where they were seen to be positively running. This enabled them to finish in two hours, twenty minutes.

It was reported that the team all enjoyed themselves with many taking away some special memories. “For me, walking with my mates and the encouragement from the public when it was getting hard towards the end was a huge highlight of the day,” Philip explained. “The worst part was blisters! I think everyone has got some form of blister or bruise and we all had a bit of a limp at the end.”

The City2Surf is a fundraising event for the Child Cancer Foundation which the firefighters helped contribute to.

All the funds raised go to support the Child Cancer Foundation and help reduce the impact of a childhood cancer diagnosis on Kiwi families.

These sixteen firefighters are part of a group of about fifty firefighters who are embracing, by attending events together, the amalgamation of urban and rural firefighters which took place in July 2017. They are now all under the FENZ umbrella.

The group enjoys being able to come together as one organisation and have some fun, as well as raising their profile and raising some funds!

Annie Jr is getting close to performance time and this year the Kirwee Players kids are sure to delight audiences of all ages once again.

The tale of Annie is well known to many, about the poor orphan Annie (Evie Evie Freller), Freller dreaming of finding the parents that left her at an orphanage, as a baby.

Having to bear the awful Miss Hannigan (Abby Abby Prusas), Prusas Annie and the orphans get up to plenty of mischief until she is asked by the billionaire Mr Warbucks (Rueben Rueben Mannering) Mannering to spend Christmas at his mansion. Annie Jr is the second dedicated kids’ show that Kirwee Players has performed and after the popularity of The Little Mermaid last year, tickets are bound to sell fast.

A new recruitment drive is underway in Malvern and as St John Malvern look forward to the future it is important to consider where they have come from too, and the legacy that new recruits will uphold.

St John has existed in New Zealand since 1885 and is part of a global organisation known as the Order of St John, which is active in more than forty countries. The Order of St John can trace its history back to a hospital set up in Jerusalem, during the Crusades, over a thousand years ago.

In more recent years it could be said that the 1880s was not a good time to have an accident, or to get ill. Even though people were highly

susceptible to injury because they were mostly doing manual jobs, medical services were scant. In 1885, a public m e e ti n g w a s h e l d i n Christchurch to establish the St John Ambulance Association.

The first ambulance vehicle was ‘the Ashford litter’, a simple, two-wheeled cart that was pushed along the road by four men. During World War II, St John volunteers made and rolled bandages and dressings, taught first aid at mass public classes and worked at medical centres. Many St John volunteers also served overseas.

In 1959, with twenty members, the Selwyn-Malvern Combined Ambulance and Nursing Division was formed, becoming Malvern St John Ambulance Brigade in 1964. The focus in those early years was mainly on providing first aid at public events and running first aid courses. In 1975 the first ambulance was purchased for the area, at a cost of $17,500 - with the Malvern Lions giving over $14,000 of that. In its first year, that original ambulance transported 82 patients.

Forty years later, Malvern St John’s workload has increased

ten-fold transporting over 850 patients.

The local Brigade worked out of the Currie street building until 2 01 0 whe n the September earthquake made the building unusable. Despite that, volunteers continued to respond during all the major events of that period. A new purpose built station was opened in 2015 and is now home to a thriving youth division and highly active ambulance team.

Anyone who would like to be part of that, should head along to the recruitment day on Saturday, April 7th. Folk can have a look at the new station and talk to some of the volunteers about what it all involves.

Last weekend locals from the Selwyn area braved the cold weather to participate in the 2018 Selwyn Relay for Life.

Around thirty teams set up camp for an overnight stay and relay at Brookside Park in Rolleston to raise funds for the Cancer Society.

Relay For Life is an inspirational and super fun event for everyone of all fitness levels, during which participants celebrate with survivors, remember loved one lost to cancer, and come together as a community to fight back against the disease.

Teams take turns, relay style, walking/running around a track for eighteen hours while enjoying a carnival atmosphere of live music, entertainment, games, activities and fantastic community camaraderie.

At the time of going to print the funds raised at this year’s Rolleston event were just over $48,000.

Malvern News spoke to Zoe Robertson, Robertson of JRC Walkers who participated in the event and raised an outstanding sum for the cause: What was the highlight of the event for you this year?

The amount that we fundraised and how the whole team really got behind the whole thing and did the best we could.

How much did your team raise?

Excitingly we raised just shy of $3,000 with team member Kiri, who was our fundraiser extraordinaire, raising over $900 on her own. We are extremely proud of our efforts as a team and aim to raise even more next year.

How did you raise the funds?

Friends, family, colleagues, employers, businesses that we work with; JRC contractors, developers and the like.

How many supporters did you have throughout the relay?

Approximately twenty at various points during the event. This was more than double that of last year, proving our weeks of planning certainly paid off.

What was the hardest part of the relay?

It was cold - very cold! Last year was too hot, this year was way too cold. Can’t win!

What has doing the Relay for Life this year brought you?

A sense of accomplishment, camaraderie, and a little hope

that we are doing our bit towards the bigger picture. It also helps us remember and reflect on the ones we have lost, or who are still going through their journey.

So how many kilometres did you personally walk, and your team?

I did just over 30 kilometres this year, which was not as far as I’d have liked, but about five kilometres more than I did last year. Our team did a total of 528 laps/264km/361,800 steps! Everyone had lots of fun keeping track of their laps and

we all felt a sense of accomplishment at what we had achieved.

So what next for JRC Walkers?

Are you doing it all again next year?

We will continue to enter a team for as long as the event runs. We have got some grand plans in the pipeline for next year, so watch this space! We are already planning how we can raise funds so plan to start well in advance hoping to improve on our total!

Last week Hororata Primary School enjoyed a visit from bestselling children’s story writer James Russell, Russell author of the selfpublished Dragon Brothers series.

“It was a wonderful week talking to children all over the region, and my first time to do so in Canterbury, so I'm very grateful that you applied for the St or yl ine s To ur ,” Ja me s commented regarding his visit to Hororata.

The books not only have a huge school pupil following, but are also used as the basis for a learning programme. “A great group of Kiwi teachers, running the ‘Read Aloud’ programme in their classrooms have put together half a dozen learning resource sheets to be used with The Dragon Defenders: Book One (published last year). They're really fun learning exercises and are free to download,” James added.

An innovator and augmented reality (AR) enthusiast, James’ publications use AR technology to bring three-dimensional ‘magic’ to his books.

Born and raised in Hamilton, James studied at the University of

Otago before moving to Auckland to work as a journalist.

Commuting on the train during a particularly damp month, he decided to write down some of the stories he had been telling his two young boys. Inspired by the enthusiastic reaction of his sons, James developed his stories into the ‘Dragon Brothers Trilogy’, a series for 3-7 year olds. Teaming up with Aucklandbased illustrator and artist Link Choi, Choi James self-published his first children’s picture book ‘The Dragon Hunters’ in 2012. In an innovative launch, he created thirty large paper mâché dragon eggs which he placed around Auckland hillsides for children to find through clues posted on his website. The children received a free book when they discovered a dragon egg.

The story of brothers Flynn and Paddy, Paddy their dog Coco, and their dragon, captured hearts across New Zealand and the three rhyming-verse stories became a bestselling trilogy. In a New Zealand first, James developed an augmented reality (AR) app to accompany his books. The AR app allows readers to hover their smart device above the page

and see dragons and volcanoes come to life before their eyes in a three dimensional magical map of Flynn and Paddy’s world.

In 2016, after becoming a fulltime writer, Russell travelled to Italy to attend the Bologna Book Fair in search of a global publisher. It was a fateful trip, as his Dragon Brothers series will now be published in China, the US, Canada and the UK. Continuing the story of Flynn and Paddy, albeit three years older and wiser, The Dragon Defenders (April 2017) is Russell’s fourth book and first children’s novel.

In May 2017 The Dragon Defenders was the top-selling children’s novel by a Kiwi author on the Nielson Bestsellers list.

West Melton School has done it again, winning gold at the recent Odering’s School Gardens’ Show.

‘Into the Future’ was the theme at this, the fourth Odering’s School Gardens’ Show presented by the Canterbury Horticultural Society, held in Christchurch on March, 16th to 18th.

There were eleven schools participating in the Show with exhibits ranging from Space Oddity to Alienopoly.

They used it to not only represent the past, but also allowed for onlookers to make their own private wishes for the future.

The wishing well was divided and depicted clearly how the human mind and their choices impact on future wishes and plans.

Sue Jackson, West Melton School Principal said, "I was so impressed with the end result, the creativity and collaboration that had gone into preparing this event showcased our school in the wider community.

“More significantly, the importance we attach to our environmental practices and how we ensure our learners drive their own learning, was clearly evident in our display!!

“It was another awesome and outstanding success for our school, ultimately involving every learner and staff member in one way or another," Sue concluded.

The Food Show is returning to Christchurch’s Horncastle Arena in 2018 (April 6th-8th), bringing Cantabrians a chance to see a star chef line-up with entertaining cooking demonstrations across the weekend.

Selwyn motorists are being reminded of the need to take care at intersections through a new Selwyn District Council road safety campaign.

The ‘What’s the cost’ campaign aims to raise awareness by profiling the price of failing to stop or give way at intersections.

Of the crashes that occur in Selwyn, 40% take place at intersections. From 2013 to 2017, 571 crashes occurred at intersections within the district, and of these 216 crashes involved an injury, with eight fatalities recorded.

In Selwyn 61% of intersection crashes are caused by failing to stop or give way. Poor driver observation is a factor in 49% of all intersection crashes.

Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police reminds

motorists that stopping means a vehicle’s wheels do not move at all.

“We encourage people to come to a complete stop, to not start looking until after they have stopped and to have a good hard look to ensure that if there is a motorcycle, or a dark coloured vehicle, they see it. We encourage people to travel with their lights on to make sure they are visible to others,” he said.

Along with the risk of causing a crash, motorists failing to stop, or give way, face an instant $150 fine and twenty demerit points.

Selwyn Police will be supporting the ‘What’s the cost’ campaign by monitoring intersections and will be issuing tickets and demerits to motorists who fail to stop, or give way, at intersections.

Top tips for intersection awareness: Always come to a complete stop at stop signs.

• Look in all directions, ahead, behind, side to side, and then only proceed when it can be done so safely.

• At give way signs, slow down and look in all directions, ahead, behind and both sides and then only proceed when it can be done so safely.

• Be aware of how fast traffic is going, particularly when entering a 100km/h road.

• Don’t overtake when travelling through an intersection.

• Be aware of the give way rules for controlled and uncontrolled intersections.

• Indicate intentions early when turning.

• Know the give way rules.

With nights getting longer, the morning and evening commutes are now in dusk. It’s time to think about autumn driving conditions.

Here are a couple of easy driving tips as we head toward the cold months.

• One easy thing to do while driving is turn on the car’s park lights or head lights. Not so the driver can see where they’re going, but more so other drivers can see them.

Since 2011, all new vehicles manufactured in Europe have been fitted with ‘Day Time Running Lights’ (DTRLs).

These lights come on automatically when the engine is started and are on continuously when driving.

DTRLs are eye catching and for good reason, so they can be seen. If drivers can see the DTRLs, they’ve also seen the oncoming car. It is the time of year when sun strike is prevalent, along with foggy mornings, so being as visible as possible is an extremely good idea. Hopefully avoiding accidents. But don’t forget to turn off the lights when the destination is reached! The NZAA mobile call out guys are always busiest in the afternoons of foggy days, as people forget to turn off their vehicle’s lights when they reach their destination.

• Another easy thing to do is to ensure there’s clear vision.

Have good quality wiper blades fitted to the vehicle so that when they’re required they work and aren’t streaky.

Top up the vehicle’s window washer bottle with water and good quality wash additive.

NOT dish wash liquid as this will create slime and cause damage to the washer system. Always have a soft cloth available to wipe the inside of the windscreen.

Using the air conditioning also helps dry out air, defogging the windscreen faster.

The Malvern Show is a great day out for the whole family.

Whether it’s to watch the horses, check out the bulls, buy some socks, or take a ride at the carnival, there is something for the whole family to enjoy. My favourite is watching the dog jumping as owners encourage their dogs to jump ever higher bales of hay, onto the back of a Ute. This year has seen a lot of change in the Sheffield area with the commissioning of the Central Plains storage pond and reticulation network. This has seen big changes for individual families and also for our wider economy. Our Selwyn population is now about 60,000 people, the largest population in the South Island after Dunedin. The Show provides the opportunity to get together with neighbours and friends to talk about the changes and also to remember that while some things evolve,

many things remain the same.

The Gap still sits on the Torlesse Range, the Waimakariri River still winds its way to the north, the Sheffield Bakery is still making great pies.

From Council’s perspective I would like to acknowledge Val McKenzie and the Sheffield Hall committee for their perseverance as we get the strengthening work on the Hall underway; those who have

enjoyed swimming safely in the Sheffield Pool with lifeguards present this summer; Nick Pratt and the staff at Sheffield School for the way you love and teach our young people; and Guy Bassett, Bassett President of the Malvern A & P Association, for your commitment to the area and leading a committee to provide a wonderful Show for our community.

Kara Taogaga has recently come on board with the Malvern A & P Show committee. She has taken on the role of convenor for the Photography Section, as well as filling the vacant positions for two additional roles; the Dog Show and the Pet Section.

Another new committee member is Brendon Topp, Topp Kara’s partner, who has stepped into the role of convenor for the Vegetable Section of the Outdoor Produce, allowing Martyn Skurr to concentrate on the seeds and grains’ section.

Being new committee members both have had a crash learning course on what their roles entail and have made slight tweaks to parts of their sections.

Both their roles include organising judges, sourcing sponsorship, or donations, of items to provide as prizes to participants, as well as promoting their sections.

They have both looked at encouraging entries either by emailing information with flyers to all Malvern primary schools, introducing a new category in the vegetable section for a school competition ‘Giant Pumpkin’ and ‘Grow a Spud in a Bucket’.

“It has been extremely hard to gauge what interest these new sections will generate yet, however, Sheffield School has been on board right from the beginning,” Kara explained.

Brendon and Kara are hopeful that next year all the region’s schools will compete for trophies in both these new, fun and exciting sections.

The President of this year’s Malvern A & P Association is Sheffield’s Guy Bassett. Guy and his wife Jenny have run both a contracting and farming operation in the locality and because of that are well known throughout Central Canterbury.

Guy has been contract seed drilling and planting for seventeen years under the trading name Bassett Agriculture Ltd. Until recently Guy and Jenny have also leased a cropping farm, growing a variety of seed and grain crops.

The couple have three children; Sarah (18) in her first year at Massey University, studying towards a veterinary degree, Charlie (16) in Year 12 at Christ’s College, and Jessica (14) in Year 10 at St Margaret’s College.

While the Bassett family do not have generations of history with the Malvern Show, as some past Presidents have had, Jenny explained, A & P Associations are of immense interest to them. The family are currently

members of Malvern, Canterbury, MacKenzie and Wanaka A & P Shows. This is mainly due to Jenny’s Boer goat stud, which requires family assistance when exhibiting.

Guy, who has been a past winner of the Matson & Allan Young Achiever Trophy, representing the Malvern A & P Show, has had many years of organising the Malvern & Courtenay A & P Winter Feed Competition, in conjunction with the late Hamish Reid and Ashley Seaton from the Courtenay Show.

The family has exhibited at Malvern for many years, with Sarah and Jenny both past winners of the Premier Photography Exhibit and Jessica winning the Under 18 years Baking Cup in 2015 and 2017 (aged 11 and 13).

A regular exhibitor is Diesel the beagle, who last year won the Best in Show, in the dog section.

“He will aim to defend his title this year, along with competing

in the dress-up section which he good-naturedly puts up with,” Jenny laughed!

This year the committee has worked toward reinvigorating the Show with not only some new classes, but also many new features.

“The aim of the Show is to have a family day hosted by the community for the community, for everyone, not just locals,” both Guy and Jenny stressed.

“There is entertainment for children by Adam Allsorts, an animal tent, music, competitions with horses and ponies, sheep, cattle, alpacas, hens, wool, dog trialling, photography, art, produce, baking, flowers and much more. There will be craft and food stalls and machinery displays by firms and local contractors as well,” Guy and Jenny outlined.

“This Show is probably one of the smaller A & P Shows, but

there is an enormous amount of community support,” Guy and Jenny said. “This makes the day activity-filled, action-packed and occasionally eventful. It’s a day we would encourage everyone to come along to, enjoy and take in the sights,” the pair concluded.

Those of you who know me will know that I am a huge fan of the local A & P Shows, including the Malvern Show which is fast approaching. The Malvern Show is a wonderful opportunity for the community to get together to enjoy the (hopefully pleasant) early autumn weather, and for farmers and growers to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past few seasons.

The theme for this year’s 119th Show is the very topical one of agricultural technology.

Technology has already changed the way many farmers and growers manage their businesses and it is likely to play an even more significant role in the years ahead.

As in previous years, the Malvern Show will offer an

excellent variety of attractions to keep the whole family entertained. I understand that the crazy, differently shaped bikes of Pedalmania are always a particular favourite with the kids. Meanwhile the vegetable section at this show is definitely not boring as you can decorate your vegetable, put it on wheels and race it down a ramp in the vegetable race!

I was pleased to learn that this year the Clydesdale horses will be back in force after this section wasn’t held last year due to a lack of entries.

Darfield Preschool and Nursery will once again be in attendance at the Malvern A & P show. They welcome parents, caregivers and children to visit their tent where there will be an available place to take some time out from the busy-ness of the show. There will be toys to play with, books to read, and free sunscreen, as well as a quiet space where parents can feed and change their babies.

Timaru locals, Brian Smith and Leanne Peatman didn’t know what they were getting themselves into when they offered to repair an old machine made out of scrap metal in 2003. Fifteen years later it is still housed in the shed at their home. This after the friend declared they didn’t want it back once Brian had fixed it.

Brian is first to admit he has a love of scrap metal and machines and enjoys putting them back together, tinkering and making them work.

And so after additions and alterations, Brian and Leeane’s monolithic ‘Scrap Machine’ came about. Made up of many pieces of scrap metal, the machine now entertains fascinated crowds at various

venues, including this year at the Malvern A & P Show.

It is reported that the machine is not just your average, run-ofthe-mill bit of metal, it is a carefully designed and created contraption run by an old hot air engine, that does many clever things.

Brian and Leanne have worked alongside groups of children to help them come up with ideas on how they could modify the ’Scrap Machine’ to be even more entertaining.

There are now puppets incorporated in the machine, that go up and down all day long, as well as a waterwheel at one end.

The ‘Scrap Machine’ is in hot demand and Brian is out on the road a great deal of the time taking it to display.

“It is hard to believe we have been all around New Zealand with it,” Brian added.

They regularly have requests from different Menz Shed groups, as well as engineering and art schools. People very much like to see how it works and understand the makings and functioning of it.

“We often add on to the machine or take pieces away from it,” Brian said. “At one

stage it got too heavy for one person to transport it, so a bit of stripping back was called for,” he laughed.

The ‘Scrap Machine’ will be running all day at the Malvern A & P Show, “it is so economical all it needs is a couple of litres of petrol and access to water for the waterwheel, and it will go for hours,” Brian explained.

Safety is always a consideration. However both Brian and Leanne have ticked all the boxes there by having the machine fenced off, making it clearly visible for people to watch - but from a safe distance .

Brian loves talking with onlookers and explaining to them exactly how the machine works, which makes for a great conversation for mechanically minded Showgoers.

For Malvern A & P Show Secretary Rebecca Stewart, Stewart embarking on her fifth Show in the role, it’s not just a one-daywonder. There’s work going on behind the scenes all year round to safeguard the success of the event and to make everything run smoothly for exhibitors, committee and those attending.

The majority of the background administration work (and there’s a lot of it) falls to Rebecca, whose organisational skills and efficiency ensure everything is completed in a timely fashion.

Rebecca hails from a family owned dairy farm in Teddington, Banks Peninsula - while her husband Duane was born, bred and grew up on a sheep and cropping farm in Darfield. The couple met through the Young Farmers Association and have two children: Jessica who is in Year 8 at Darfield High School and Samuel who is in year 6 at

The family live on a small lifestyle block at Annat, where they farm cattle and own a couple of horses. As well as their involvement with the Malvern A & P Show, the family are also involved with the Sheffield Tennis, Netball, Rugby and Cricket Clubs.

“I currently work part time as the Office Manager for The Famous Sheffield Pie Shop based at their Oxford Main Street Bakery and Café; I am also a committee member on the Sheffield/ Waddington Township Committee and I have just joined the Darfield High School Parent Teacher Student Association,” Rebecca commented.

Rebecca began her Malvern A & P Association involvement as a committee member helping in the horse section, before taking over as secretary in 2013.

She is passionate about the role of A & P Shows and thinks it’s important to maintain the tradition of them for future generations.

“The Malvern A & P Association has held an annual show since 1899,” Rebecca said. “A & P Shows are an important part of cultural life in small country towns, they bring the wider community together for a wonderful day of competition, entertainment and fun.”

This is definitely the case at Sheffield where generations have looked forward to the event

The Show Secretary’s day on Show Day begins at the grounds at around 6.30am. For Rebecca Stewart, Stewart Secretary of the Malvern A & P Association this early start allows her to get set up for the day, before allocating horse back numbers to the riders.

“Most of the early morning is spent making sure that everyone is where they are supposed to be and at the correct time,” Rebecca commented. “Along with dealing with any problems/issues and enquiries from the public and committee. There’s also payments to be taken in and attributed correctly.”

From mid morning results start to come in and these need to be entered into the system as soon as possible.

“I usually get a small break for an hour or so around lunchtime thanks to all my wonderful helpers on the day,” Rebecca said.

“After the Grand Parade, from about 3pm, it is flat out handing out prizes and cups to prize winners. Then it’s a bit of a tidy up and time to go home around 5.30pm - exhausted,” she smiled.

“My job is definitely made easier by having a wonderful committee who all work together to make the Malvern A & P Show such a great event,” Rebecca concluded.

Preparation for the Show really ramps up back in October when the entry Schedule of Classes is prepared, ready for printing and putting online. It’s at this time that Memberships need to be updated with all the resultant documentation and record keeping done correctly to make sure everyone’s details and requirements are correct.

In early January entries are opened, schedules sent out, sponsorship arranged, grant applications processed, advertising organised, committee meetings held, ribbons/prize cards ordered, cups cleaned, judges/stewards organised, Trade site applications start to come in and general entries also start to come in.

“Entering has been made easier with people being able to go online and get everything sorted,” Rebecca said. “Some people still prefer to post their entries, which then have to be manually entered into the system.”

It’s also at this time numerous ’housekeeping’ things need to be arranged to ensure they’re all in p lace fo r Show Day; rubbish bins, toilets, catering, judges, stewards, vo lunteers, veterinar ian, security, St John Ambulance etc.

While everyone enjoys their Malvern Show Day and marvels at how smoothly it runs, it’s definitely the efficient behind the scenes organisation by all concerned that enables it to do so.

As sheep convenor of the Malvern A & P Show for several years, Dene Wason can have the job running like a well-oiled machine. Prior to Show day Dene undertakes the organisation of judges for the variety of breeds and sections, as well as ensuring that there are sponsors, and enough suitable stewards, to help on Show day.

“Thankfully we always have support on the day from the Rural College at Darfield High School,” Dene said. “They assist with penning sheep, assisting judges and stewards and we are very g rateful for their assistance,” he added.

Dene has seen a general decline in entries over the past few years, as exhibitors have retired or ceased showing but, as he explained, “we seem to end up with late entries, like this year, giving us eventually a good number of breeds represented”.

Dene commented that as there was no ‘Feature’ breed of sheep at the Show this year that could have contributed to slightly lower entry numbers.

The two tooth competition, which Dene has been associated with for many years, has given way this year, to the inaugural Beef Heifer competition. This will possibly be biennially and could also mean the flock section will be a bit lighter.

One of the biggest jobs of Dene’s role is putting up the sheep yards. This requires posts and netting going up on the Monday prior to the Show, and gates being tied. This whole process takes some time and a lot of committee manpower.

“The committee always welcome some extra hands from volunteers,” he said.

The signs and loadout ramps are set up at the second working bee later in the week and any finishing touches are done on the Friday prior.

“Saturday Show day, we always wish for fine weather to get the arriving animals penned and judged before lunch,” Dene explained. “The rest of the day is then taken up with points totalled for each section, trophies awarded and prize money distributed. This is all

done before we get to have a well-earned drink and some socialising time at the end of the day. Then, of course, there is clean up day on Monday!

“Fortunately the Malvern Show is blessed to have a capable and supportive committee,” Dene said.

He feels that while it is a traditional A & P Show with stock, horses, produce, machinery, stalls and entertainment - it also includes various competitions and lots for youngsters to show what they can do.

“It remains a great family, community day to be involved in,” Dene concluded.

Photography has been a part of the Malvern Show for many years, however this year has seen some changes with additional categories added for children.

Within the children’s section there is the under 10’s, under 16’s, and open class. This year, photography convener, Kara Taogaga, Taogaga has introduced two new categories for the younger

generation, called ‘selfie’ and ‘selfie and . . . what else’.

She recognised from her own daughter and friends that children seem to love a selfie and decided that the new categories would complement modern times.

The ‘what else’ was something that Kara also saw in her own daughter’s selfie pictures, where she had captured pet

lambs in the photo as well.

Karen Casey, Casey a professional photographer will be judging the entries this year and is hoping to be available at the Show to talk with anyone regarding tips and techniques.

“This year has seen an increase in entries from last year, which is fantastic,” Kara concluded.

Natalie and Adrian Mannering are the owners of Nat’s Nursery, based in Hororata.

This is the first year they have supported the Malvern show and they commented that they are really looking forward to being a part of it.

“We are excited about showcasing plants that are relevant and ready to go in this area; raised and cared for in Hororata.”

Nat’s Nursery has a purpose built trailer for display, complete with shade, enabling them to bring the best of their outstanding stock to the customer. They plan an early arrival on Show Day, so as to be set-up and ready for showgoers to peruse their stand.

“We are crossing our fingers for a calm, warm-ish day so our umbrella stays up and our plants don't get too stressed,” Nat said.

“We are looking forward to greeting Show attendees and hope we can set about meeting their planting and gardening needs.

It’s also a great opportunity for us to hear show -goers gardening stories and discover new plants that have worked well in our district.”

Natalie and Adrian hope to be busy at the Malvern Show, but not so rushed off their feet that they can’t spare some time to go and see what the Show has

to offer and to meet other trade site holders.

“Meeting other businesses is important as we can all share knowledge, and catching up with locals is a way of improving our own service,” the couple added.

“We see rural agricultural shows as being very beneficial to our business because they provide an opportunity to share our product and learn from others.”

Nat’s Nursery can supply direct to customers’ landscapers, source specific plants for clients and deliver when required. The Nursery specialises in natives, hedging and trees and standing behind their catchphrase of ‘local plants - local people’ demonstrates what the business is all about.

“We are passionate about supporting our local ecosystem with food, as well as making your garden look amazing,” Natalie said. “Our friendly and open minded approach will ensure we meet all your needs and we are happy to order in if we don't have quite have enough of what you want, or something completely different. We can discuss what is appropriate for your garden and what will go well for you.”

Maree Churchill markets products from her ‘El dos Cadena Alpacas’, stud under the trade name of ‘Alpacas in the Attic’. This year will mark a name change for her stud to ‘Suri Fino Alpacas’ which Maree feels will better reflect her business direction.

“While I am mainly a coloured Suri Alpaca breeder, I also have Huacaya Alpaca and coloured Merino sheep,” Maree explained. “My products are available online and I also run, from my farm studio, various classes in felting, skirting and scouring fibre, as well as educational classes for the management of Alpacas on lifestyle blocks and for new breeders.”

Malvern A & P Show as a livestock exhibitor since 2007.

“It was only my second ever Show and my Intermediate Male won Supreme Champion Suri, which was very exciting for me as a novice,” Maree said. “I have attended this Show ever since.

“I go to almost all the A & P shows in Canterbury where alpacas are entered, as well as taking my market stall to both other A & P shows and local fairs/fetes.

“My family has connections to the Sheffield area and to this A & P show especially, through my Uncle Roy Beecroft.

come and watch me and my alpacas in the ring.

About five years ago Maree also began to bring her market stall with her to the Show. This enabled showgoers to view and purchase handmade New Zealand Alpaca Products and gifts, the majority of which are made with Maree’s herd Suri and Huacaya Alpaca fibre.

On Show day Maree has an early start, travelling from Swannanoa about an hour away.

She arrives in Sheffield, often in darkness, but having allowed enough time to settle in her Alpacas before judging, then get her market stall set-up.

As with all trade site holders the weather can help or hinder Maree has to be vigilant to ensure all her stock stays dry and under cover - she, along with everyone else, hopes it won’t be an issue this year.

Maree is passionate about educating the public about Alpaca fibre and especially the Suri Alpaca. “Encouraging people to touch and handle the fleeces and see the differences in the two breeds, as well as chatting to interested passersby is all part of the Show experience,” Maree commented. “As a Suri Breeder, I enjoy teaching about this rare fibre and I like to talk to other craft minded people from the area and beyond, many of whom visit me each year to chat and buy.”

Mel Cleland has big shoes to fill having taken over the role of Convenor of the Horse section from Elly May, May who had held the position for many years.

“While this is my first year in the role and I can’t make comparisons, so far everything has run efficiently with the much appreciated help of the committee to show me the ropes,” Mel commented.

“My role is to make sure the horse section runs smoothly on the day - to get everyone to the correct rings, and on time. I check that every ring has ribbons, prize money, judge and steward, then it’s all up to the competitors and judges to do their thing. I also will make myself available to answer any questions/queries and generally keep an eye on everything.

every year there are always new competitors entering also. On average we have between 150200 competitors across the various horse sections and I’ve also used the massive power of Facebook to help promote the horse section this year as well,” Mel added.

While Mel has been innovative with her promotion, the section has largely remained the same, with the exception of the in-hand Clydesdale section - which many will be thrilled to see return.

“We also have a jumping spectacular, which will be held in the lunch break this year,” Mel said, “it’s guaranteed to keep spectators entertained and the crowd on their feet,” she said.

One innovative inclusion to the horse section is the ‘Rev and Ride’ competition. With $250 worth of prize money donated

by Bassett Agriculture Limited at stake, this is a timed event for either one, or a team of two, competitors. It involves the rider jumping their horse around a course, before tagging their team member who has to sack jump across to a waiting vehicle then manoeuvre it around an obstacle course to the finish.

“Time faults are given for

refusals, rails down and cones knocked over,” Mel added.

“Fastest time wins!”

Keeping in entertainment mode spectators should enjoy the Three Bar Jumping; a knock out three jump event for Horses and Ponies with $150 prize money for both the horse and the pony section.

The Pairs Jumping event will take place at the completion of the Hunter Rounds it offers good prize money and the winner takes all!

“Following Show Day, and prior to it, we are all involved in working bees, clean-ups and set -ups. We are a hands-on committee and all pitch-in helping each other get everything ready on the grounds prior to the Show, and packed up afterwards.”

When the News asked Mel what she saw as the future of the A & P Show - in general and this one in particular, she answered, “that’s a pretty hard question to answer being that this is my first year involved, but I’d love to try and grow the horse section some more in the future, but for this year just surviving would be nice,” she concluded with a laugh.

The Digger Challenge has been made possible by the generous donation of machinery time, materials and trained staff from Curle Contracting Ltd enabling this new entertainment feature at the Malvern A & P Show this year.

Called ‘The Digger Challenge’ it allows an opportunity for those who have their licence with them on the day and are over sixteen years old to enter the Challenge and drive a digger.

Those entering the Challenge need to complete several different tasks within a six minute time-frame. There will be the ‘Stack and Pack’, where

operators will either stack tyres up, or unpack the tyres down.

Brendon Topp has taken over as the new convenor of the vegetable section and has begun by introducing a range of exciting new events, mixing up the vegetable section.

This year the heaviest vegetable section has increased from pumpkin, marrow, and cabbage to include the heaviest tomato, lettuce, onion and potato.

Show organisers advise that participants can enter on the day, as long as all vegetables are entered by the 9am cut-off.

Additional sections for children have also been added and include the new under 10’s with an alien vegetable and bestdressed cabbage, while under 16’s have the opportunity to make a vegetable creature.

Another new activity this year is the Crazy Vegetable Race!

Brendon Topp has also recently been welcomed on to the Entertainment Committee.

The Entertainment Committee is in charge of organising additional events at the Show each year.

One such highlight this year is Adam Allsorts the Clown who will be entertaining everyone throughout the day while roving around the Show grounds. Adam Allsorts (known locally as one of the gymnastics and trampolining

coaches in Darfield), as the name indicates does ‘All-Sorts’.

Having a background in gymnastics, acrobatics and circus he can include a myriad of skills and talent to entertain not only the young, but also the

young at heart! With a bit of juggling, maybe some magic, or perhaps a twist of a balloon or two - who knows what Adam Allsorts will do? It’s all a mystery and Show goers will just have to wait and see!

For the second year in a row Glentunnel Primary School invited students to participate as a team in the Hanmer Four Hour Mountain Bike event.

This year saw four Glentunnel teams take up the challenge; two teams of four and two teams of three. This is one more than last year as word had well and truly spread about the great adventure and fun times had by all competitors.

The students ranging in age from six years old, through to eleven competed on Saturday, March 17th with the event taking place in the Hanmer township.

Stechmann said, “the students all had a lot of fun and left feeling tired but proud of their efforts.”

It was reported that the School was happy to co-ordinate the teams for the event. “It supports the School’s vision and values of achieving our potential through accepting challenge, bringing effort and persevering,” he explained.

“There is a wonderful family atmosphere to the event and the organisers do a fantastic job catering for the school teams.

“We will definitely be back again next year to challenge ourselves and support and encourage one another,” Dion concluded.

The Malvern Squash Club were delighted recently to receive congratulations from Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton.

Broughton The Mayor wrote to the Club congratulating them on their rec en t n om i na ti on a nd recognition at the New Zealand Canterbury Sports’ awards.

It was yet another plaudit for the Club that spent a lot of 2017 upgrading their facilities and bringing exciting events to the area. Such events including a night with Paul Coll, a New Zealand professional who has consistently ranked within the top ten players in the world, over the past year. The Mayor’s letter was unexpected, but a great motivator to continue their initiatives.

Following on from the hard

work and success of 2017 the Club hit the ground running in 2018 and over recent weeks has installed new insulation to the ceiling of the courts. Last year the Club insulated the walls above the courts and by finishing this work in the ceiling it will not only make the facilities a more comfortable place to play during winter, but will also improve the efficiency of heating the area.

Kirwee who met with Little River, from Banks Peninsular in a hard fought final which delivered them second place.

Saturday, March 10th marked the annual Kirwee Rugby 10's Tournament.

Blue sky and hydrated green fields welcomed the ten teams who had entered as they arrived for a 9.45am start.

Fortunately the well oiled wheels of the organising committee made sure proceedings weren’t derailed by the late withdrawal of Oxford Colts.

With a combination of teams from as far away as Banks Peninsula and New Brighton, it was always going to be a battle of town versus country.

The first game showed there was no love lost between Hornby and New Brighton and saw the sea-siders coming away with a five-point win.

Next up were Kirwee Seniors who led from the start over a strong Oxford side. The Kirwee team showed the benefits of a good pre-season, plus the addition of some new international players.

With the Club barbecue being just as popular as KFC Rolleston, DJ Singh Star set up on a Frew’s truck announcing games and results, as well as

The role will mostly involve stock work so experience in this area is a must. Along with general farm tasks such as fencing and maintenance, there will also be some machinery operating (feeding out etc) as well as irrigator moving so experience in these areas would be a bonus.

To be considered for this role you must be legally able to work in New Zealand, and be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
