On Sunday, February 11th TM Dance World and Creative Sparks held their Open Day enabling the community to view their new premises in North Terrace, Darfield. The Open Day came after five busy months renovating the old shed on the property (which had been used as a Tyre outlet in a previous life) into beautiful new dance and art studios. Free classes were offered all morning, for all ages, in Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Art and Keyboard with many taking the opportunity of experiencing something new. Tara McKeown (TM Dance World) and Vicky Peacock (Creative Sparks) were also booked up all morning for their newly created four year olds programme called Art to Arabesque. “It’s so exciting for
us to be able to offer these special programmes together,” enthused Tara. “The children were entertained for forty five minutes while they created art and let out energy in dance!” The weather was not looking the best for the scheduled official opening at 3pm, however the rain obligingly held off. Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton, began the proceedings with a speech and declared the premises officially open! This was followed with the unveiling of the sponsorship fence. “We love this fence, it is a dancers’ mural painted by Vicky and all the dancers are holding the logos of our sponsors, which we are really proud of,” Tara explained.

In the studio there were four performances from TM Dance World students, as well as dancers from the Malvern Ballet School. Music from Holly Kimber was much enjoyed and it was reported that there was a fantastic spread laid out from Darfield’s Fat Beagle Cafe. “We had a large crowd turn up, way more than expected,” said an excited Tara. “Everyone enjoyed walking through our beautiful new space and it felt good to show them what we have been doing for the last five months.” As part of the celebrations both Creative Sparks and TM Dance World offered a free term of classes. Brooke Quintin was the winner of the dance scholarship and Charli Gilbertson and Charlotte Rhodes were the winners of the Art Competition. With the first week of classes now finished Tara added, “it’s been so exciting, we are really happy to finally be in the Darfield township. A warm balmy evening on February 7th saw a large crowd attend the Spectrum Lighting and Sound Drive in Movie, held in the Darfield Recreation Reserve. There was a fantastic turnout of around 135 attendees tuning in with their car radio to watch Ghostbusters (1984) on the big screen! It brought back memories for many and created new experiences for all! On February 15th, also as part of Summer in Selwyn, around 105 attendees took time to relax outside and on a sunny evening at the New World Rolleston Picnic in the Park, held in West Melton family and friends enjoyed live music from Holly Kimber, a free sausage sizzle and loads of activities that were on offer at the West Melton Domain.

Show jumping is in the family of fifteen year old Darfield High School student Rosa BuistBuistBrown , who has been competing since the age of five. Though she started at an early age it really wasn’t until she turned ten that she become serious about show jumping. Up until then Rosa had just been participating because older sister, Molly, Molly was serious about it and would hand down her horses to her. Now she couldn’t be more serious, competing in a range of competitions every weekend. Rosa travels throughout the South Island from mid September through to mid March; the show jumping season. Rosa recently demonstrated exactly how dedicated and passionate she is about show jumping at the New Zealand National Championship held at McLean’s Island in Christchurch where she took out the title of New Zealand National Champion Grand Prix, with her horse Junior Disco. Rosa and eleven year old, Junior Disco, have been together for three years, and
Rosa and Junior Disco. they started riding Grand Prix two years ago. The current competition was run over three rounds, instead of the usual five, meaning that it was a test in consistency, fitness and ability to stay cool, calm and collected. Rosa’s mother, Rochelle Buist said, “last year Rosa got so nervous after taking the lead that she ended up losing her concentration and losing the lead too.” This year, however, Rosa went into the second round in sixth place, and moved to third place for the final round. With fi rst a nd s econd placeholders both taking out rails in round three, Rosa and Disco pulled out a stunning performance, jumping the course and moving up to take the win.
This win would not have been possible without the training Rosa puts in, which consists of hacking and flat work, and lunging during the season. “She doesn't jump often at home unless having a lesson with her North Island based instructor Duncan McFarlane,” McFarlane Rochelle explained. “Duncan travels to Christchurch every six weeks for two day clinics held at Rosa's home, which operates as an Equestrian Centre. Rosa is now looking forward to competing in the Pony of the Year, “sister, Molly won Nationals when she was fifteen as well, and then was lucky enough to win Pony of the Year in 2015, so Rosa would dearly love to keep that family tradition alive and well,” Rochelle concluded.

Local Hororata woman, Lucinda Murray had one of her biggest weekends ever competing and winning with her horse Enchanted Secrets in the South Island All Welsh Horse Show. The show, which is held annually at the Ashburton Showgrounds, took place this year on Saturday, February 10th, and was judged by an international panel from Australia, United Kingdom and Wales. On show were all Welsh horses, both purebred and part bred and included harness and led or ridden sections. Though Lucinda is a professional show rider who has been producing and riding horses all her life, this was the first year that she had attended this Show. “It seemed appropriate to show my six year old pony, Enchanted Secrets,” Lucinda commented, “as I’ve worked with her right from when she was an unhandled pony.” Lucinda and Enchanted Secrets achieved outstanding results at the Show coming away with Champion Part Bred Welsh, Supreme Champion Welsh and Supreme In-Hand Exhibit, before going on to win the overall Grand Supreme Exhibit of the Show. “It was a huge honour to win
under Judges of such high international standard,” Lucinda enthused. Lucinda rounded off the weekend by attending the South Island Native Bred Show at the
Ellesmere Show Grounds on Sunday, 11th, taking home another win and the title of Supreme Exhibit of South Island Native Bred Show.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams is concerned at the impact that the second stage of the Christchurch Southern Motorway (CSM2) will have on West Melton’s roads. “While I am a huge supporter of CSM2, I am worried about the impact it is likely to have on Weedons Ross Road, and the intersection of Weedons Ross Road and State Highway 73,” Amy said. “As part of CSM2, there will be a major interchange at Weedons
Ross Road. As a consequence, traffic heading from South to North will likely turn off at the interchange and travel down Weedons Ross Road to access State Highway 73 at this intersection. Meanwhile, traffic travelling on State Highway 73 bound for the inland port at Rolleston will also most likely turn off at this point. “Given that this intersection is already very busy, I am concerned at how the inevitable further increase in traffic

volumes will be managed,” Amy explained. “Weedons Ross Road is not designed to cope with this amount of traffic and, given that it runs past Weedons School, the safety of children and parents needs to be considered also.” Amy met with New Zealand Transport Association (NZTA) to discuss this matter but was disappointed to learn that the NZTA had not carried out specific transport modelling on these roads. “Of even more concern was the apparent fact that the traffic volume data being used by NZTA had not been updated since 2000, despite this area experiencing some of the fastest growth in New Zealand during the intervening period. “I would have assumed that NZTA would have done modelling on the impact of CSM2 on surrounding roads using current data but this appears to not have been the case,” Amy said. “This leaves West Melton residents and drivers who commute via this intersection daily without any assurance that there is an adequate plan in place to manage the growing traffic volumes at this location and mitigate health and safety ri s ks f or dr iv er s and pedestrians. “I therefore urge NZTA to undertake urgent work to rectify this oversight.”

Speed limits will remain at 100km/hr on some key arterial routes in Selwyn, following a review of speed limits in the district. On Wednesday, February 14th Se lwy n D i st r ict Co unc i l confirmed it will implement a number of speed limit changes, which include extending the 50 km/hr urban speed limits in several townships and extending or introducing 80 km/ hr limits on some rural roads in eastern Selwyn. The changes were proposed after a review of speed limits late last year, and public consultation which was largely supportive of the proposals. Proposals to reduce the speed limit on key arterial commuter routes will not proceed. These routes, including Shands Rd (from Selwyn Road to Boundary Road), Springs Road (from Hamptons Road to Ellesmere Junction Road), Selwyn Road (from Shands Road to Lincoln Rolleston Road), and Lincoln Rolleston Road (from Branthwaite Drive to Selwyn Road) will remain at 100 km/hr, after consultation with the NZ Transport Agency. Selwyn District Council Assets Manager Murray Washington said NZTA supported the reduction to 80 km/hr on rural road s i n ge ner a l, but recommended that the limit on the arterial routes should remain at 100 km/hr. “This is because these roads are of a higher standard, with a wider sealed area, and drivers differentiate these from the surrounding roads with narrower seals,” he added.
“Retaining the higher limit will also address concerns raised by some submitters during the public consultation period.” Townships where lower speed limits will be introduced, or extended, include Castle Hill, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston, the Rolleston industrial area, and West Melton. Murray commented that the changes reflect the growth in townships across Selwyn and forecast subdivision development. An 80 km/hr limit is to be introduced on rural roads adjoining the Christchurch city boundary, including Maddison’s Road and extending out to Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Rolleston. The 80 km/hr speed limit on rural roads in the Prebbleton area will also be extended out to Lincoln and Rolleston. A further review of the remaining speed limits across the district will be undertaken over the next four months, to ensure that the limits are aligned with NZTA guidelines. This work will focus on the replacement of 70 km/hr speed limits and the speed limits in urban areas not already reviewed. It will also include a review of speed limits around schools. “It’s important that we respond appropriately to the changes in our district, as our growing population is bringing with it a significant increase in traffic volumes. “These changes will help ensure that our roading network remains safe for everybody, and that speed limits encourage

safe driving.” The approved speed limit changes are planned to be implemented over the next six weeks, with new signs in place before March 31st.

Unique and rare livestock breeds will be available to purchase at the annual Rare Breeds Auction and Heritage Lifestyle Day, at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in mid March. This event aims to raise awareness of heritage farm animal breeds, makes them available to the public through the livestock auction, and raises money for the work of the Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand. There will be a huge range of poultry, pheasants and waterfowl for sale on auction day, as well as heritage livestock like Awassi, Gotland Pelt, Karakul, Meatmaster and Damara sheep, Tamworth and Auckland Island pigs, Waipu goats and a selection of rabbits. Michael Willis, Willis Rare Breeds Conservation Society Committee member and Willowbank Cofounder, said, ‘the origin of some of these breeds goes back thousands of years, so
conserving them allows us to preserve a large range of genetic diversity, which we may need in the future if new diseases and chemical resistant parasites affect modern breeds.’ Marina Steinke, Steinke Editor of the society’s magazine Rare Breeds NewZ, added, “rare livestock breeds can be fantastic for small farmers who do not have the means or inclination to treat their livestock with chemicals on a regular basis.”
The event will include displays, the opportunity to talk to the vendors and other rare breed enthusiasts about their livestock. Reduced entry fees to Willowbank apply until 1pm. The Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand hopes that more people will take on Heritage livestock to help safeguard their future, and to enjoy these fascinating breeds.

Clare Clatworthy, Julie Crequer and Vanessa Moore, all from Darfield, compete as a team. Last weekend Clare Clatworthy, Clatworthy Julie Crequer and Vanessa Moore competed as a team in the Challenge Wanaka Half Triathlon. The girls managed a twentieth place in the Female Team Category out of approximately 160 teams. Clare swam her 1.9kms in 43.40 minutes and then ran 500 metres to the transition area to meet Julie who was doing the bike leg. The weather was a real mixture for Julie during her 90km ride with elevations up to 497m, she completed her ride in 3.27 hours. Vanessa finished off for the team with a 21km run in very hot conditions taking 2.03 hours to complete. The team was very happy with their combined total time, coming in well under their seven hour target.

Three contractors are bidding to refurbish a fence at the Beehive. One is local from Wellington, another is from Upper HuS, and the third is some bloke from Auckland. All three go with a Government official to examine the fence. The local contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me." The Upper HuS contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $200 for my crew, and $200 profit for me." The bloke from Auckland doesn't bother to measure or figure, but leans over to the Government official and whispers, "$2,700." The official, incredulous, says, "you didn't even measure like the others! How did you come up with such a high figure?" The bloke whispers back, "$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the local guy to do the job." "Done!" replies the Government official.
