Seven year old Darfield Primary School student, Rubie Leech, Leech is currently the envy of many having gained a place on the national television programme ‘What Now’ (airing Sunday mornings on TV Two). Rubie first became involved in ‘What Now’ after her parents (Kylie Kylie and Glen) Glen saw a post online calling for audition videos for Kid Cam segments to cover sports or nature/ environment. “Though Rubie’s main love is dancing, that was already covered and we couldn’t submit her netball until winter,” explained Kylie. With a family background in motorsport it just seemed like the obvious choice to submit something on Speedway. “It’s something completely different that not a lot of people have access to. Rubie’s
grandparents lease out three race cars and we go to all of the race meetings. It was easy to get the footage and so it made sense to try our luck by sending in a video of Rubie presenting a race meeting.” The initial audition video required the family taking lots of videos of Rubie interviewing drivers, doing an introduction and some racing coverage. Kylie then edited it and sent it off. “There were some very excited screams from Rubie when the family heard it had been accepted,” enthused Kylie. The whole experience has been a wonderful learning opportunity for Rubie, who Kylie reports, is in general a shy and quiet young lady. “It has taught her about being confident in front of complete strangers as she interviews
