On Sunday, February 4th, Coalgate local, 14 year old, Ethan Rose took to the mountain bike tracks at Halswell’s Crocodile CrossCountry Mountain Bike Park, as a competitor in the South Island Mountain Bike Cross-Country Championship. The 4.3 kilometre purpose-built race course, alongside the Halswell Quarry, is made up to challenge competitors with each lap having approximately 160 metres of elevation gain, and over four different climbs. The course, with the exception of the event village at the Quarry, is 100 percent single track, but

has plenty of passing opportunities on the climbs, and is mostly located within mature pine forest. The course has been designed with racing in mind and includes a variety of technical aspects. Looping back on itself in several places, the course is fantastic for spectators, with the opportunity to view riders multiple times each lap. Though built to be a challenge it proved no problem to Ethan, who raced in the men's Under 17's (U17’s) grade, while sharing the course with the U15's, and all age grades over twenty-nine years.

Ethan’s Dad, Adam Heard, said, “there was a great turnout, on the day, with over fifty racers on the start line in Ethan's race.” The mass start didn’t appear to phase Ethan, who took the lead right from the beginning. “He never looked back, making the gap bigger each lap,” Adam commented. Ethan put on a spectacular display of racing and finished first overall (this is out of all competing age groups) by over 1.5 minutes. This definitely saw him taking out first place in his entered category - U17’s where he came in over 3.5 minutes fas te r t ha n t h e n ext placegetter, making him South Island U17 Mountain Bike Cross-Country Champion. Ethan is already preparing for his next race and heads off to Dunedin this week to race in

the Oceania Mountain Bike Cross-Country championships on Saturday, February 10th. “We are hoping to have another good result with the top Australian riders coming over to race against,” Adam proudly concluded.
