It’s the second birthday of Darfield’s beautiful florist’s shop ‘A Twisted Bunch’ and for the business owner Alanah Conner it’s the extremely busy, realisation of a dream.

“The second year has gone super-fast with lots of changes and growth within the Shop,” Alanah commented, “we haven't really looked back since we opened our doors two years ago!

“I have been quite inundated

with brides planning their weddings and certain days are already booked a year ahead of time, which is fantastic. Sadly that’s leaving some brides disappointed, as I am already fully booked the day they want me! I would advise any brides who know their wedding dates well in advance to make a tentative booking with me earlier rather than later,” Alanah stressed.

The usually biennial Castle Hill Village Easter Art weekend has, since its inception, always been a non-profit, community-based, fun family, event supporting local artists.

The event has evolved since its early conception when it was conceived by a group of artists from within the village and for a number of years was presented through the generous efforts of a single individual with tireless co-ordination, dedication, time and effort.

The current group of volunteers organising this year’s event are following in the footsteps of its founders with the same spirit of celebration in the creativity of Castle Hill.

It is run to support local artists and community, as well as to provide support in monetary and practical ways to Kea Conservation, the Craigieburn Trails and wilding pine control.

All this supports the environment in which the Castle Hill Village is situated and celebrates the many artists that gain inspiration from the area.

It is no surprise that this beautiful region attracts and inspires many artists. The Craigieburn area, Castle Hill, and Kura Tawhiti, have always been influential with a variety of artists producing some wonderful work over the years.

Castle Hill Creative is a volunteer organisation keen to continue with the tradition of a biennial Easter Art Weekend, held in Castle Hill village, and is planning its sixth event this coming Easter Weekend (March 31st - April 1st).

“Knowing that there has been a three year gap since the last event, we are keen to hear of any new artists in the area, as it would be great to add to previous exhibitors with some

new talent,” said Helene Blomfield, Blomfield one of the community organisers.

“It’s very exciting to be hosting it this Easter, and wonderful that we have had support from Selwyn District Creative Communities,” said Ildica Boyd, Boyd another member of the organising committee.

The event organisers can be contacted via their website castlehillcreative.nz which has more details about the event and how to join in. The main exhibition will be held in the Castle Hill Community Hall, accompanied by various workshops in and around the village over the two days.

A Twisted Bunch’s shop is a delight to the eye and due to customer demand and requests, Alanah has added even more retail products, plus a selection of unusual indoor plants. “We also stock an organic body product range, as well as locally and New Zealand made products. We are always keen to meet local crafts’ people and artisans whose products/crafts may suit our Shop,” Alanah said.

“We are hopeful that the service will con+nue beyond this date,” said Nick Stoneman of the Bus Go Canterbury team.

“However we have just been informed that there will be a fare increase of .50c on both adult and child fares. We hope the old +metable leaving Darfield is leI in place for the first few weeks,” he added.

On Sunday, February 18th Sheffield Rugby Club will host the third annual Mountain Bike race on some pristine private hill country farms, thanks to Dave and Nicki Stokes ‘Wyndale’, Reece and Mel Cleland ‘Annavale Station’ and the Ferguson Family, ‘Baldoon’.

This year the event offers a 24 kilometre MTB race, along with a 12 kilometre recreational ride for more relaxed riders.

“We also we have a section for those bikers who are very patriotic to their own Rugby Clubs,” said one of the event’s organisers, Tom Ferguson.

Ferguson “They must wear their Club jersey and the winner of this section receives a $300 voucher from R80 to go towards their Club’s junior teams - and more importantly, bragging rights for the year!”

For the first time this year an 11 kilometre off-road running race has been added.

“It includes beautiful scenery and a great balance of contour,” Tom said. “While it is challenging it is much less so than the Bell Hill Challenge which is started from the same

location in November.”

All proceeds from the Mountain Bike Race will go towards Sheffield Rugby Club’s kids’ rugby, while the running race funds will go toward the Sheffield Cricket Club.

Organisers are extremely grateful for the amazing sponsorship received and are aware that the event couldn’t go ahead without this level of support.

“We have cash for winning categories, plus a vast number of spot prizes ranging from jet boat rides to frozen chickens,” Tom said.

MALVERN NEWS’ DEADLINES FOR 9TH FEBRUARY ISSUE: Editorial - 1pm Sunday | Adver sing - 10am Monday

Intending participants from around the country are finalising their preparation for the iconic Coast to Coast multisports race which will take place on February 9th and 10th.

The endurance race runs a n n u a l l y a n d a ttr a c ts numerous competitors, both from New Zealand and internationally. Many local Canterbury names also feature in the list of entrants.

The race, one of the world’s longest running multi-sports events, was founded in 1983

by Robin Judkins and began with seventy nine hardy athletes who took on the 243 kilometre challenge over two days. Today over 800 athletes line up for the event.

The two day race enables entrants with a range of varying skill levels to

participate, while top athletes can complete the whole course in close to eleven hours.

Competitors in the two day race take up to twenty total hours to complete it.

Competitors begin the race on the West Coast, at Kumara Beach and cross the width of the South Island, over the main divide and finish on the east coast at the Pier, New Brighton beach, Christchurch.

A variety of race disciplines are encountered within the event; running, cycling and kayaking, each capable of offering extreme conditions and scenarios depending on weather and physical skills.

Training for the Coast to Coast needs to be intense as confirmed by many of the local participants. The Malvern District is well represented in the event and has competitors

While local Tig Dalley, Dalley is a first time entrant (in the two day individual), the Coast to Coast has long been on his bucket list.

“So this year I decided to go for it, taking a year off cricket to train,” he explained.

“For me it is a once in a lifetime thing, but taking up so much time training has certainly meant my wife Lilly has been burdened with more than she should have, so I thank her for this,” Tig added.

“I started training in March last year doing some running and biking around Darfield and in September I went on my grade two kayak course. Since mid October I have been kayaking, running and biking on a weekly basis and since Christmas I’ve been stringing them all together two to three times a week.

As of last week I have started tapering off to rest for race day. The kayaking has been the biggest challenge for me, having never done anything remotely like it before; learning the skills has been an exhilarating experience,” Tig concluded.

Ex-local Wayne May is looking forward to competing in the Coast to Coast for a third time this year. “It’s an awesome event which I always enjoy,” he said. “It’s always great to have an event to train for which forces you to get up off the couch and lose some weight!”

This year Wayne is in a team with his cousin, Jackie Dwyer (from Ashburton).

“We caught up at a wedding last year and Jackie was keen to complete the running section of the race and looking for a paddler. I put my hand up and we created the team Mayday Mayhem,” he explained. “It’ll be the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with my extended family.”

The old West Melton Community Centre remains standing proud alongside the developing new West Melton Community and Recreation Centre. Construction on the new building began at the end of September 2017 and is set to take around eleven months to complete. The new facility will include a main stadium with a full sized basketball court, meeting rooms, catering kitchen, Playcentre and Plunket facilities, Scout hall and youth area. The existing Centre will remain available for use until the new facility is open, and will be removed once this happens.

A major review of the Selwyn District Plan is now under way, with an initial focus on identifying heritage items that might be added to the Plan.

Selwyn District Council wants to hear from the community about whether any additional items of cultural and historic value, such as historic buildings, places or monuments, should be added to the new Selwyn District Plan.

There are over 120 heritage items currently listed in the District Plan. They can be found in the Appendix 3 of both the Rural and Township Volumes of the Plan, which is available online.

The public consultation on heritage items is the first stage of public engagement on the review of the current District Plan.

“A district plan is essentially a ‘rule book’ which sets districtwide rules for sustainably managing our natural and physical resources,” Tim said.

“So it’s important that people get involved in the review of our current Plan and have a say about what can and cannot be done on land and how it can be developed.

“We’ve already talked to a number of stakeholders and landowners who have been telling us what’s working well and what’s not.

Our first mee+ng of the year saw us rambling around the Kirwee and Courtenay areas on what can only be described as a scorcher of an evening. Mary Roberts was the owner of the first property we visited and it set the scene for the rest of the evening. The garden was immaculately maintained with flowers, trees and shrubs. The vegetable garden was amazing, Mary must be growing for the whole of Kirwee, with spuds, peppers, leEuce and many other vegetables. Tracey Summers was the second kind person to open her garden to us, a coEage garden full of colour and many old favourites. We then visited the property of Alan Mathewson, a grower and processor of hazelnuts. Alan spoke to us of the growing and selec+on of these delicious favourites, and how dependent they are on weather condi+ons. The trees were well established and well maintained in neat, clean rows all over the property and were a delight to look at. However, whilst we were in the sheds, the dog made off with the home baking that was part of the thank you giI from the group; never miss an opportunity do they? What a great end to our visit to Alan’s property. Rose and Joe Catherwood then welcomed us to their garden.

Recently re-vamped to a very high standard, the maple trees were stunning and as the evening light was fading, the numerous trees shone. The garden was quite park like and very relaxing. Our last stop was at the garden of Club member Jenny Scollay, and although the light was almost faded, we managed to have a quick tour, again admiring the park like se,ng and the trees. We will definitely need a return visit to appreciate this lovely garden. Supper was enjoyed with a catch up aIer the holidays. Finishing off, what about the floral displays at the old jail in Darfield and the Kirwee Tavern, don’t they look great? Happy days,

The summer reading bingo provided plenty of reading encouragement and pleasure and ended with a finale party and prizes for those who completed the challenges.

The Library continues to offer extended hours, until 7pm on Tuesdays, and 3.30pm on Saturdays, including a fun children’s activity at 2pm (such as craft, games, Lego, or creative technology). Selwyn District Council is asking drivers to stay alert for children now returning to schools.

Over 9,500 Selwyn children began travelling to school from this week, up from 8,000 in 2017.

Many of these young people will be getting off and on school buses, in and out of cars and walking, biking and scooting to and from school.

Council School Road Safety Coordina tor S te phanie Hautler reminds drivers that the only time drivers must stop for pedestrians is on a pedestrian (zebra) crossing, at a school road patrol or kea crossing when the stop lollipops are out, and when pedestrians have a green man at traffic signals.

A crossing point is an area that has been deemed by Council as the best place for pedestrians to cross the road. It may have kerb buildouts to shorten the crossing distance and some may have a pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road to cross the road in stages.

Pedestrians need to stop, look and listen before crossing the road at a cross point and just like any other section of road, vehicles have

the right of way.

“I often see drivers stopping to let children cross at cross points. Although drivers may think it’s courteous stopping in the lane, it’s incredibly dangerous and setting our children up for failure.

Children may develop an expectation that all vehicles will stop for them,” Stephanie said.

“It is unsafe to stop in a live lane of traffic and you run the risk of being rear-ended or worse, being shunted into the very pedestrian you were trying to help”.

Stephanie added that if a vehicle stops on a crossing point, pedestrians should wave them on and wait for a

gap in the traffic to cross safely.

Key tips for children and parents getting ready for the school year include: •Be bright, be seen on the way to school, ask at school for a safety vest.

•Parents/caregivers should tackle the routes with their child/children talking about sneaky driveways and blind corners.

•Get out and active together to reduce the chaos at the school gate.

•Wear cycle helmets, this goes for caregivers too, young people are always watching adults as role models!

With 9,500 children having started back at school this week, Council is urging drivers and pedestrians to take extra care at crossing points.

A major project to install traffic lights at the Masefield Drive/ Rolleston Drive intersection in Rolleston is about to get under way.

The works, due to begin in early February, include cycle lanes and footpaths (both separate and shared), as well as storm water work and road resurfacing. This is part of a comprehensive upgrade to future proof this busy area of Rolleston.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the upgrade will bring longterm benefits to the community.

“This is a major project in the Rolleston Town Centre Master Plan to vastly improve safety while providing for increased vehicle, cycle and pedestrian traffic through this busy

intersection," he said.

"Although there will be some short term inconvenience to motorists, the new layout will bring improved safety and traffic flow. It also provides for traffic associated with the Christchurch Southern Motorway,” he explained.

Construction was programmed to start this week with completion expected in June 2018.

Although both Rolleston Drive and Masefield Drive will remain open at all times, there will be some disruption to traffic during the construction period, with temporary lower speed limits and other restrictions such as lane shifts and stop/go controls.

A 30 km/h speed limit will be in place around the work site.

For those of you that are considering having your home fly and spider proofed here are some things that may help with your decision: Years ago the products were very smelly and left a brown sticky mess over everything they touched. Today with the more sophisticated products that we use (and we at Spiderban only use New Zealand made products) there is no sticky mess and the smell is minimal. The products are all water based and although they do leave a slightly milky film on glass; being water based it is easily removed. Sometimes clients think our products have marked their windows, but it's not the case and the products have all been extensively tested. Quite often glass will have a mineral residue on it from rain or irrigation systems, depending on the water in the area. Because our product is milky looking it shows up the mineral deposits when sprayed onto the glass. To spray your house properly we need to get a coating on the frames which does mean getting it on the glass.

Windows are the one of the first points of entry for spiders, through the weep holes and gaps around the frames. When we spray the inside of a house you must be out of the house for three to four hours and the house must be prepared. We do a walk around and check every house, before we treat it.

We do not spray inside with a back pack garden sprayer! We use an electric machine that puts the product on at around about the same fineness as aerosol canned fly spray. Once the product is dry it is safe (that's why you have to be out three to four hours). Our spray will protect your home from whitetails, flies, all spiders, fleas and silver fish.

We do inside of over 50% of the homes we treat, and for flies that will take care of them for about twelve months.
