In time honoured tradition and shrouded in secrecy the New Year’s Honours’ List was, after all criteria had been met, announced to the public on December 30th, 2017. Amongst the names of the worthy recipients was local woman Melissa Jebson, Jebson who had had to keep the information to herself for some weeks prior. Melissa was awarded a Queens Service Medal in recognition of her voluntary service to the community. She is now entitled to add QSM after her name and while Melissa admits to not only feeling honoured to be the recipient of such an award, she added that she also felt humbled by it too. “My husband, John knew something was up earlier in 2017 as he had received phone calls from various sources asking for information on the things that I had been
involved with. He said nothing to me about it but suspected something was in the planning stages. It was all without my knowledge. Nominations may be made by any person or persons by completing a nomination form, before the Prime Minister, with the assistance of a Cabinet Committee of Ministers, studies all nominations received and from which a selection or shortlist is made for submission to The Queen (this happens twice a year). By long-standing convention, the source of nominations received by the Prime Minister is not disclosed. “I was blown away by the accolade,” Melissa said. “Both my cell phone and the landline started ringing soon after 7am on the morning the Honours’ List came out and I have had many calls, emails and letters from far and wide congratulating me, which has left me
