In time honoured tradition and shrouded in secrecy the New Year’s Honours’ List was, after all criteria had been met, announced to the public on December 30th, 2017.

Amongst the names of the worthy recipients was local woman Melissa Jebson, Jebson who had had to keep the information to herself for some weeks prior. Melissa was awarded a Queens Service Medal in recognition of her voluntary service to the community. She is now entitled to add QSM after her name and while Melissa admits to not only feeling honoured to be the recipient of such an award, she added that she also felt humbled by it too.

“My husband, John knew something was up earlier in 2017 as he had received phone calls from various sources asking for information on the things that I had been

involved with. He said nothing to me about it but suspected something was in the planning stages. It was all without my knowledge.

Nominations may be made by any person or persons by completing a nomination form, before the Prime Minister, with the assistance of a Cabinet Committee of Ministers, studies all nominations received and from which a selection or shortlist is made for submission to The Queen (this happens twice a year). By long-standing convention, the source of nominations received by the Prime Minister is not disclosed.

“I was blown away by the accolade,” Melissa said. “Both my cell phone and the landline started ringing soon after 7am on the morning the Honours’ List came out and I have had many calls, emails and letters from far and wide congratulating me, which has left me

The Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) was instituted by New Zealand in 1975 and while there is more than one date

option to have the medals presented to the recipients, Melissa is considering the month of May to have her ceremony scheduled.

She will receive a medal with the inscription ‘For Service’ and ‘Mō Nga Mahi Nui’ on a 36mm ribbon with narrow red ochre (kokowhai) edges and a centre of alternating stripes of red ochre, white and black descending step pattern from left to right. The design is based on the Maori Poutama (stepped) pattern used in Tukutuku wall panels. It is usually interpreted as the ‘stairway to heaven’, but in this case alludes to ‘steps of service’. All New Zealand State Honours are instituted under a Royal Warrant signed by Queen Elizabeth II as the Queen of New Zealand.

For services to agriculture and the community Mrs Melissa Jebson has been President of the Central Districts of the Royal Agricultural Society since 2016 and is a member of the National Executive Committee of the NZRAS. Mrs Jebson has been involved with the Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Show for 25 years, most recently as a Health and Safety Officer and measuring steward, and previously as President in 2013. She is a National Horse Judge for equestrian events around New Zealand including Horse of the Year and other show events. She has previously been Secretary of the Young Farmers in Christchurch and Mid Canterbury Districts.

She was elected to the Darfield High School Board of Trustees in 2007, becoming Deputy Chair in 2010, and serving again as a parent representative from 2013 to 2016. She was appointed the school’s Rugby Administrator in 2016. She has chaired Creative New Zealand Selwyn District since 2015. She has conducted the Malvern Choir and refereed for Malvern Netball.

Mrs Jebson has been involved with Plunket at the local branch level for twelve years and has been a member of the Malvern Plunket Committee.

On behalf of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust, its President Mark Appleton is appealing for suitably able riders to join them in this year’s Anzac day ceremonies.

“We have been engaged to appear at Burnham Camp in the ANZAC Day 2018 dawn service,” Mark said, “then on to Templeton RSA, before later on in the day at Greendale for another service. It is our intention and goal to have one hundred horses and riders at the Greendale service in the afternoon. Sadly the Burnham Camp service can only take 25 riders due to the space available, however the balance of riders recruited will be able to join the group at Templeton,” he added. “Training will be offered beforehand,” Mark said, “and so what we’re looking for at this point in time are the names of riders interested in participating.

We will offer training in Military style riding and orders prior to the event, added to which riders must be competent and commit to this training.”

The NZ Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust was set up to visually represent the brave men and their horses that went to war over one hundred years ago.

Their vision for the future is one where the people who are brave enough to stand up and fight for New Zealand are adequately cared for, recognised and remembered. Families to be

cared for in their absence, either temporarily or permanently. The Trust stands by the mothers and fathers that erected all the war memorials in every small town in New Zealand so many years ago.

Memorials in memory of their sons and daughters that left on a ‘great adventure’, only to be met by the horrors of war.

The NZ Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust raises as much money and awareness as they can for the education and visual display of the Mounted Rifles Regiments of New Zealand.

Money is raised for worthy causes such as Rannerdale Veterans’ Care, The Fallen Heroes Trust and for the care of Veterans in the future. This is d o n e by c h ar g i ng fo r appearances, selling gifts from their online shop and the Trust’s Army Tent shop at Shows throughout the country.

Porter’s Ski Area has expanded their operation into the summer season after purchasing the Porter’s Lodge from the Porter’s Ski Club.

The Porter’s Alpine Lodge is now open for business and offers a new outdoor seating area for customers to take in the undeniably stunning views of the Canterbury High Country while sampling the delicious new summer menu designed by recently appointed chef Bruno Ali. Ali Bruno, along with his partner Michelle Watson, Watson is delighted to be managing the Lodge, bringing skills and experience developed overseas. The couple first met whilst working in a pizzeria in Leeds, England, but the lure of travelling to Bruno’s homeland of Aotearoa New Zealand was hard to resist.

Their combined passion for locally sourced produce, artisanal baking and excellent service led them to seek out the unique opportunity of running the Porter’s mountain lodge this summer. Keen on the outdoors, their new ‘office’ provides them with limitless opportunities to hike, mountain bike, go bouldering, fish and explore the beautiful alpine environment that surrounds them.

“Having all this on our doorstep makes us want to share it with our customers, whether they are just popping in for lunch or staying overnight,” Bruno added. “It is pretty special to live and work up here - it is a world away from the city, but actually, it’s just over an hour’s drive.” (even less for Malvern News readers!)

Two Rivers Community Trust Events are excitedly preparing to host the fourth annual Waitangi Community Fun Day on Tuesday, February 6th, 2018 at the Darfield Recreation Reserve.

Running from 10am until 2pm the event is not only fun filled, but is also a free event for the whole family to enjoy being together on New Zealand’s National Day. Some of the amazing free activities arranged by organisers and available on the day include pony rides, rabbits and guinea pigs to pet, bouncy castles, Pedalmania’s crazy bikes, fabulous face painting Faeries, Lego building with House of Bricks, story-times with interactive activities from Darfield Library, giant games, tug o’ war, Kiwi style backyard cricket, Darfield Plunket Toy Library will have plenty of toys to try out along with a feeding and changing place for little people, and much, much more!

“Community groups will have delicious treats to purchase such as Devonshire teas, fruit kebabs, and baking, or bring along a picnic of goodies from home for your family to enjoy,” Kelly encouraged.

“There’ll be Live music from Vinegar Jam with summery vibes to help you relax into a fun day as you enjoy your food or meander around perusing the

The Glenroy Hall Committee advises intending participants that they have a range of activities planned at the venue for the new Year.

Taekwondo will take place twice a week in the evenings and welcomes all comers - old, young, beginners or experienced and even those who just want to keep fit. In stark contrast, is the meditation group taking place on Sunday evenings and once again it’s reported that all are welcome.

The Glenroy Hall Craft Group is a growing one and with its ‘bring-your-own-craft-work’ approach, it’s also an enjoyable addition to the social network of those attending.

The group meet twice a month with tea and coffee provided.

The Hall’s Line Dancing group

has been together for quite a while and its members are more than happy to teach newbies how to do it. Cowboy hats, boots, etc. are reportedly optional! Senior line dancing takes place weekly on a Thursday and recently added is a Junior group also on a Thursday.

New Zealand Rural Women meet at Glenroy and organise various outings, as well as presentations etc in the Hall.

The Glenroy Hall is a wonderful venue for events and over recent months has seen a successful one-person show by Helen Molder, Molder kiddies parties, bring-and-buy/car boot sales, as well as more formal events.

In June organisers will again hold their annual MidWinter feast, and in November there will be a commemoration of the

Canterbury Police is encouraging people to exercise caution when conducting themselves online and remember to think twice about sharing private information or content.

“Anyone using dating sites and apps needs to be very careful when developing relationships online. It's extremely difficult to permanently delete something from the internet. Once you have pushed send you no longer have control of what happens with the image or information you have shared,” said Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel, McDaniel Acting Area Manager; Prevention; Canterbury.

Police encourage people not to take personal photographs of themselves or recordings of compromising activities. Once these images are obtained, a scammer may attempt to extort money by threatening to release these images into the public arena and to their family, friends or employer.

“Scammers are organised criminals - they do everything they can to appear legitimate.

This includes using fake identities, pictures they find on the internet and stories that have worked for them before to

gain something from a person.”

Unfortunately, the Police stressed, this is a problem that is not going to go away and people need to be vigilant when conducting their business online.

They point out that online scams can be sophisticated and wellplanned, and that they receive scam reports from people of all ages and backgrounds.

Some points from the Police to remember: Prevention is key: • Never share a photo of yourself that you wouldn’t want anyone else to see.

• Never respond to a request for money or financial information via an online dating app or website.

• If you receive an email that appears to be from a bank,

government organisation or other agency but you are unsure of its authenticity, phone them to check if the email is legitimate.

Don’t allow location settings or identify your home address, when using online dating apps, or websites.

Check your privacy settings online to ensure your address, full name, work place etc are not available.

“Anyone who believes they are a victim of any crime, in person or online, should report the matter to their local Police.

Netsafe also provides helpful advice and information on their website,” concluded Senior Sergeant McDaniel.

To the Editors: I continue to be concerned at the poor state of maintenance on the Old West Coast Road. I travel it every day and it’s becoming more like a car manufacturers suspension test track! I find it unbelievable that bumps that can cause damage and even cause motorcyclists to come off are ‘rectified’ by placing ‘uneven surface signs by them and further down this road such signs are permanent!

How can a sign adequately address the hazard unless there is also a speed restriction to indicate how much of a hazard it is?

Over the years I have seen white marks sprayed showing the defects and giving the impression that work will take place.... false hope as the marks fade to be replaced the following year. I have taken to using the SDC ‘snap send solve’ app to get issues sorted and, in fairness to Council, issues do get sorted (such as the signs erected as a solution to poor roads). I suggest more of us should use the app as Council seem unable to find potholes that are large enough to remove wheels. Please Council.... can we have a bit more proactive work and please use contractors that properly consolidate the road before sealing - full marks to CPWL who used ACL for the road crossings that remain nice and smooth.

The Selwyn Gallery is pleased to open 2018 with ‘A Family Affair’, (February 2nd until March 3rd) an exhibition of painting and woodwork by two couples: Lyn and Gray Leonard, Leonard along with Ruth and Ian Warren.

Warren Lyn Leonard’s paintings reflect a love of rural New Zealand. “As a young adult I moved to Wellington, saw a demonstration of porcelain painting and felt a strong desire to learn this skill. I moved to Christchurch, found a teacher and began my artistic journey. In later years I was able to take up the new challenge of painting in oils; the principles I learned in porcelain painting enabling me to adapt to this new medium. I most enjoy capturing realistic impressions of New Zealand flora and fauna, and specialise in painting our diverse birdlife,” Lyn commented.

Gray Leonard qualified as an Architectural Designer in 1972.

After building a kiln in the mid

1980s and becoming a proficient potter, Gray received a merit award at the then prestigious, ‘Fletcher Brownbuilt’ national exhibition.“In the early 1990’s I expanded into painting contemporary designs on porcelain and after retiring in 2008 my love for the outdoors led me into painting the New Zealand landscape which is now my passion. Painting the landscape has been so rewarding and I especially enjoy capturing our magnificent vistas, skies, forest and tree studies, which are my favourites,” Gray said.

Ruth Warren has enjoyed dabbling with two-dimensional art since leaving school, attending many short courses and series of painting classes.

has encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone painting landscapes and to look at everyday situations using simplified shapes and forms.

Creating works that through body stance, depict and show expression and movement, without the need for detail. Ruth has works in public collections in Japan and China and in private collections in many other countries.

Ian Warren began his ‘first year of official retirement’ by purchasing a wood lathe on Trade Me. Some research turned up the Christchurch Woodturners Association, which offered a Certificate in Woodturning course. After three years of attending monthly sessions he qualified for the certificate.

“Five years later I still enjoy absorbing myself in my workshop revealing the grain and beauty of a rough piece of wood,” Ian said. “Many have to be discarded, as turning reveals faults, and even final pieces are not always perfect. But that is wood, a natural product which comes, like us all, with a few cracks and dents,” he concluded.

Selwyn Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this show and a Show programme will be available from the Gallery.

Inspired by newspaper articles about her ancestors’ weddings in papers past, from the mid 1800's, Amanda Maclean submitted this ‘slightly tongue in cheek’ report about a recent local wedding: “An exceedingly pretty wedding was solemnised in Kirwee Saturday last, when Miss Melinda Brown, Brown only daughter of Mr Trevor Brown and the late Mrs E. Brown of Kirwee, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr Matthew Hobbs, Hobbs second son of Mr Murray Hobbs of Fairlie, and Mrs M. Ferry of Dunedin.

The bride was gracefully attired in a charming brown and white print gathered gauze day-dress, and for the ceremony upgraded to an exquisite vintage mattwhite silk crepe-de-chine gown in princess style. In the Centre competitions West Melton’s junior bowlers were once again to the fore. Roye Daniels, Daniels Ken Sharplin and Paul Williams(s) won the Centre Williams Development Triples, while Karen Glassy, Glassy Roye Daniels, Paul Williams and Ken Sharplin(s) were runners-up in the final of the Centre Development Fours and the Club congratulates them all.

The finals of the Malvern 5’s Competition were played on December 16th which included four West Melton teams over three divisions. Bill Paekau, Paekau Bob Burnett, Burnett Jeff Mugford, Mugford Mike Leigh and Ron McNicholl playing for West Melton 1 in the Premier Division prevailed in the final. It was reported that this was the third year in a row a West Melton team had won this division. West Melton 5 were runners-up in the Senior Division and West Melton

7 were runners-up in the Senior Reserve Division.

The Malvern Open Singles was played over two days and attracted many fine players from all of the Malvern Clubs.

Selwyn residents are being encouraged to take part in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge, which is taking place across New Zealand this February encouraging fitness, good mental health and a love of bike riding. Workplaces can register in different categories, with great prizes up for grabs suc h a s e - bi ke s a nd backpacks, for riding just ten minutes at a time.

Developed by the New Zealand Transport Agency and Love to Ride, this is the second year of the nationwide bike initiative and will run throughout February. Over 14,000 people took part last year.

Any biking done, either commuting, recreational or for fitness, counts in the challenge. It’s not about who can ride the most kilometres, but who can encourage the most people to give cycling a try. The teams which get the highest percentage of their staff riding for their size category will win.

Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler commented that she was initially nervous about getting on the road to ride to work, with only off-road biking experience.

“As part of my role is to promote cycling I thought I should walk the talk! The shortest route is not always the safest and I have hunted out some quieter roads which only add two minutes to the trip and with practice comes confidence and I now really enjoy the fifteen minute commute,” she said.

“Get on your bike, people, you may be surprised how enjoyable it is!”

Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore said the Centre’s prices have been well researched during the annual review and took into consideration increasing annual costs such as electricity, staffing, pool chemicals, and maintenance.

“The new pricing is in line with other similar facilities in Canterbury and will enable the Centre to reach its annual revenue target, which aims to achieve a 50/50 cost recovery result with user pays and rates subsidy,” Kathy said.

The pricing review considered charges at facilities including the Christchurch City Council pools (Jellie Park, Graham Condon, Pioneer), the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre in Timaru, the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton, and Dudley Pool in Rangiora. The Learn to Swim and Swim School charges were evaluated by comparison with

privately run Kings Swim School in Sockburn.

The adult fee is increasing from $5.50 to $6, while the cost for a child to swim will increase from $3.20 to $3.50. Students will pay $5, up from $4.50. Swim School lessons will cost $11 for pre-schoolers and $12 for school-aged children. Family group, memberships and concession card pricing have also increased across the board. All Aqua Fitness classes will be set at a flat $9 cost for casuals. Holders of Gold Card and Community Services cards receive discounted fees.

The new Swim School class prices will commence from Monday, January 29th, 2018 which is the start date for Term 1 classes. The remainder of the increases will take effect from Thursday, February 1st 2018.

"Test your children’s road safety knowledge before school starts back" As kids head on back to school next week we want parents to take the time to check they’re up to speed with road safety.

“The summer holidays are long and that means some children might have forgotten some of the basic rules they need to follow to keep themselves safe,” said Inspector Peter McKennie, McKennie Manager of Operations for Road Policing.

“Add to that their excitement about returning to school and seeing their friends and this can mean they will be less alert to the traffic dangers around them.”

Police are asking parents to sit down with their children before the end of the holidays and have a conversation around road safety rules.

This is particularly important if your child is going to be travelling to school on their own.

“Help them to choose the safest route to get there and do a few practise walks or bikes with them so they are familiar with the route and the safest places to cross,” Peter said.

“It is important to remind them that any time they are crossing the road they must stop, look, and listen for any cars, bikes, or cyclists before they step out.”

Police are also urging parents to remember that your children will follow your actions.

For that reason we need parents to stick to the road rules.

“Try parking a bit further away from school and walking if there aren’t any free parks close by, make sure you don’t park on yellow lines.

“For motorists in general, remember to keep your speed down and be extra alert in case a child runs or bikes in front of you without warning.

Even small increases in speed result in a much greater increase in your stopping distance, and that can mean the difference between life and death for pedestrians, so it's vital you slow down around schools.

“Children make mistakes, but they don't deserve to pay for them with their life.

How you drive makes the difference,” Peter ended.
