Kirwee Players’ Kids cast for their 2018 production of Annie Jr has been named. Auditions were held in early December with seventy children from all over Selwyn trying out for the roles.

Two full days of auditions, saw some incredible talent walk through the doors of the community hall in Kirwee and it was reported that the

cast who will perform this classic, well known musical in April is sure to impress.

Directed by the dynamic team of Clare Hamilton, Hamilton Caelan Thomas and Olivia Gibson, Gibson Annie Jr will run from April 6th - 8th, 2018.

The Bus Go Canterbury Team have been working behind the scenes in recent weeks gathering replies from the online survey following the decision by Redbus Ltd to cancel the Darfield and West Melton Bus Service, effec+ve now. A mee+ng held on December 15th, 2017 discussed ways of keeping the bus service and a survey was called for from interested persons to outline their commitment and usage requirements.

Young four year old Darcy Forest had all his dreams come true on Saturday, December 16th when not only did he get to see his heroes Sol3 Mio perform, but he also got to sing

with them!

Darcy, who wants to become a singer, attended the Sol3 Mio concert in Christchurch with his family as an early Christmas treat. “He was lucky enough to be taken back stage after the concert, said his mother Lorelai Forest, Forest “where he was greeted with much love and enthusiasm, before getting to sing with them.”

New Zealand trio Sol3 Mio consists of brothers Pene and Amitai Pati along with their cousin Moses Mackay.

Mackay The group is of Samoan descent and classically trained; the Pati brothers are operatic tenors and Moses is a baritone.

“They are brilliant,” Lorelai enthused, “and it’s so lovely to have such role models for children too! Almost five year old Darcy is a huge fan, he has their album and listens to it on repeat so he was so excited to attend their concert. This was his first real concert (if you don’t include the Wiggles) and he had been counting down the days until he attended. Darcy goes to Pitter Patter dance class in West Melton every Tuesday (we’re a Darfield family though the kids are homeschooled),” Lorelai explained, “and he often feels a little embarrassed being the only boy.

“As we were leaving the concert (which blew him away, he danced and sang and declared it the best night of his life, blown away by the group’s voices live) we were discussing all this at the merchandise stand,” Lorelai said. “Everyone had left and we were virtually the last to go when some of the officials/crew overheard us and contacted Sol3 Mio back stage saying, “there is a little boy here, can he come and meet you”.

“They immediately said yes and invited the whole family backstage! Darcy was greeted like a long lost friend and there were bear hugs and high fives, along with lots of joking around.

He was shy at first but the group really took their time to bring him out of his shell. We weren’t rushed at all but invited to take a seat, where Darcy snuggled up to Amitai to take selfies and talk about singing.

They all then sang Jingle Bells together which Amitai videoed.

“Amitai later posted the video on Instagram, saying, “met this amazing lil’ man last night after our show in Christchurch.

Thanks to the lovely @lorelai_forest for bringing him backstage to meet us and for giving us the privilege of singing with him. Watch out, world... This lil’ heartbreaker is gonna run wild with that voice of his! Keep singing, Darcy your parents love you and @sol3mio does, too”.

“Darcy spoke with Sol3 Mio about Christmas and how he might grow up to be a singing builder one day; Moses’s idea which Darcy thought was brilliant. They were very encouraging and commended his self belief - doing what he loved and being himself. This really made his Christmas,” Lorelai said.

While little brother River slept through it all, it didn’t end there. “The next day we received messages from Sol3 Mio wishing us a Merry Christmas along with more encouraging words for Darcy. It meant so much to him and he’ll hold on to that forever. He still can’t believe it,” Lorelai finished.

As for Darcy, he’s aiming high and wants to sing for the San Francisco opera one day, just like his heroes!

The Greendale Community Trust is restoring the TW Adams Arboretum in Adams Road, Greendale and this national heritage site is now accessible to all.

“A heritage site that was all but lost is now especially beautiful in spring with the many bulbs that TW planted beneath the trees. It is a beautiful place all year round to enjoy the many different species of trees,” r e p o rt e d R u t h W a r r e n , Secretary of the Greendale Community Trust.

TW Adams was one of the first settlers in Greendale. The remains of the cob cottage that he built on his arrival in 1865 are still standing today. The site is significant as TW Adams collected numerous seeds of trees from around the world, many of which are unique specimens. TW recognised the need for shelter on the Plains and trialled many species in the late 1880’s to determine those that grew well in Canterbury’s soils and climate. This resulted in the establishment of Pinus Radiata and the forestry industry in New Zealand. His

The Editors To the Editors: At a recent graveside ceremony in the Kimberley Cemetery I witnessed a respectful action by two young motorcycle riders. They approached the cars on the roadside, immediately turned the machines off and dismounted. They then pushed their motorcycles about 100 metres before riding on. It was a most responsible action and I applaud them for the thoughtfulness, not always demonstrated by much older members of our communities.

To the Editors: I have recently moved to Darfield (within the last year) and drive from Darfield to Hornby at 6am each morning for work. I am shocked and frustrated at the number of cars travelling in both directions, that do not have any form of car lights on. I understand that car lights only legally have to be illuminated during dusk, but on mornings like Monday’s fog, winter mornings when it is still partly dark, or when visibility is hampered due to inclement weather, rain, fog and/or mist I would think that common sense would prevail. Surely you would want to make yourself safer by being seen? It’s the quick flick of a switch....... Having lost a brother to the road, and knowing the heartbreak for a family, I just wish people would use common sense and do whatever they can to keep themselves safe.

A gathering of locals from the area surrounding Flock Hill met on Wednesday, January 10th and discussed the extension of emergency planning and preparation in the Castle Hill/Waimakariri Valley for when the Alpine Fault ruptures.

“The best remedy for panic when the Alpine Fault ruptures is planning and preparation,” said Ray Goldring, Goldring Community Response Team Leader, Castle Hill Village.

The meeting described as ‘interesting and constructive’ was also attended by three Selwyn District Council staff who are central to emergency response. They guided the discussion and took back to the Council the needs of the area. The Council will work with the community to prepare a Community Response Plan similar to those underway for Lake Coleridge and Arthur’s Pass.

“The only certainty is that this event will happen,” Ray said.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton has established a Mayoral relief fund to support families affected by the Knights Road fire near Rolleston on Saturday, December 23rd.

One family lost their home in the fire, while three other dwellings suffered significant damage, and a number of out buildings were

lost.

Sam commented that the incident was a tragedy for the affected families.

“This couldn’t have happened at a worse time - coming right before Christmas,” he said. “But we’ve been encouraged by the many offers of help from the community. I think everyone

With the slight easing of LVR restrictions on Banks from 10% to 15%, there may be more opportunity to get lending above 80% LVR but the competition will be tough so good income and clean credit are really important, as is a good mortgage adviser.

The FEI World Dressage Challenge is an International Development Competition supported and organised globally by the FEI which is the overall governing body of equestrian sports in the world.

The Dressage Challenge was held at the National Equestrian Centre, McLean’s Island on Friday, December 1st and judged by Maria Schwennesen (AUS) and Sue Harris (NZL).

This was the thirty seventh time this challenge has taken place and in early January 2018 the New Zealand team, containing numerous local connections, heard the results they had been hoping for.

New Zealand was announced the overall world winner after 39 countries had competed in the event. New Zealand won

Dressage NZ Sports Manager Wendy Hamerton commented that, “under a new format where we have both world team and individual rankings it is the first time New

Zealand have won overall.

“This is also the first time that Australia have competed for a number of years, so it is significant that we beat them. Previously we have won the Zone a number of times.”

New Zealand competes in this Challenge each year with the event taking place in either the North or South Islands alternately.

Selwyn District Council is encouraging residents to help the environment and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by making sure they dispose of recyclables responsibly.

Household recycling in Selwyn has been steadily increasing in volume from 4,982 tonnes in the year to June 2016 to 5,385 tonnes in the year to June 2017, according to Selwyn District Council Solid Waste Manager, Andrew Boyd.

Boyd “It’s great to see the increase in recycling taking place. The holidays are a time when people generate more recyclables than throughout the rest of the year,”

All recyclable items must be loose in your yellow bin so they can be easily separated for recycling, not placed inside a plastic bag, as the machinery that sorts recycling rejects bagged items as rubbish. Soft plastics including newspaper wrap and cling film can’t be recycled through the kerbside recycling system, only empty supermarket plastic bags are accepted. Takeaway coffee cups have a thin plastic coating on the inside, so that they can hold liquid. For this reason they can’t be recycled and need to be put into the rubbish bin. Drinking

“Recyclables must be emptied and cleaned before being put into recycle bins,” explained Andrew.

What do I do now? My sugges+on would be firstly set it up on the Internet. When you start it up, down in the right hand side there is an icon that looks like this.

It’s the one with the Asterisk over the top of it. That’s the network connec+on.

LeU Click on it and it will open up with your Modem/ Router Broadband WiFi connec+on device in the list.

When you Click on it make sure you Click connect automa+cally and then put in the password. Usually on the bo4om of the unit, or ask someone else in the household using it.

Once it’s connected then you will want to go on the Internet. LeU Click the browser icon (leU hand side bo4om) either a sort of dark blue ‘E’ with a cut taken out of it or something that says Internet like Safari, Firefox or Chrome. Once that opens to a home page then you can go anywhere you want.

Go into ‘Control Panel’ then ‘Programs and Features’ and look for an An+virus program. Once you have found it then LeU Click once to highlight it then at the top LeU click uninstall. Once you have done this restart the computer and this will automa+cally turn on the An+virus and An+spyware program that comes with Windows 10 called Windows Defender. If you want to see the se,ngs and what it can do the li4le magnifying glass on the taskbar at the bo4om of the screen, usually the second one in on the leU hand side. LeU Click it and type in Windows Defender. When it pops up Right Click it and LeU Click ‘Pin to Taskbar’. You can then open it and check that things are how you want them to be. It will have a white shield with a green +ck in the right hand side of the bo4om task bar if it’s all installed and running properly.

Ashburton and Selwyn District Councils are delighted that the Welcoming Communities Standard has now been launched by Immigration New Zealand.

The Councils, which are among five regions in the country to pilot Welcoming Communities, will use the standard to measure the success of their Welcoming Communities initiatives, when they get underway in the new year.

Equitable access; inclusive leadership; civic engagement and participation; and welcoming public spaces are just some of the elements of the outcomes-based standard.

“Around the world Kiwis are known for being friendly, hospitable, and inclusive and we want that to be the absolute reality for people living in the Ashburton and Selwyn Districts,” Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said.

“It is about becoming better host communities, rather than only expecting newcomers and migrants to change their ways.

We know that welcoming activities create bonds between local residents and newcomers

that have social, economic and cultural benefits for everyone,” Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton added.

The two-year Welcoming Communities programme is designed to support local Councils and their communities to become even more welcoming to recent migrants, former refugees, international students, and even New Zealanders coming from elsewhere. Other Councils and communities taking part in the pilot programme are Tauranga/ Western Bay of Plenty (Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council); Southland (Gore District Council, Invercargill City

Council and Southland District Council); Whanganui (Whanganui District Council); and Palmerston North (Palmerston North City Council).

Based on its success, the programme may be rolled out to other regions in New Zealand from July 2019.

KIMBER RURAL FENCING FENCING FOR ALL TYPES OF AGRICULTURAL FENCING Canterbury farmers are encouraged to look out for, and report sightings of, the yellow flowering thistle, Saffron Thistle (Carthamus lanatus) to Environment Canterbury.

The Biosecurity team at Environment Canterbury is working with the farming industry to eliminate Saffron Thistle from the region. Saffron Thistle competes with pasture species forming large dense stands and, when it gets established, can reduce stock carrying capacity, which in turn impacts production. Its sharp spines can cause injuries to the eyes and mouths of stock and get stuck in wool.

Environment Canterbury Resource Management Principal Biosecurity Advisor Laurence Smith said, “We ask anyone who suspects they have Saffron Thistle to let us know as soon as possible. It will be flowering and easily identifiable with its yellow flowers from December to April. We want to eliminate it to

protect their property, as well as to protect the rest of the region, which is at risk of it spreading further afield.”

Saffron Thistle is currently only known in a few localised areas of Canterbury. This gives the region a good opportunity to eliminate it before it becomes established and widespread like scotch and nodding thistles.

“Biosecurity staff have been monitoring and controlling all known Saffron Thistle sites in our region since the 1970s.

Last season, we controlled around 22,000 plants over 23 known properties in the region,” Laurence said.

“We need to do more searching to make sure we are aware of all sites. Landowners and public are an important part of finding new sites. With fourteen biosecurity staff and 45,346 sq km of land in Canterbury to cover, every extra set of eyes that reports suspected pests, helps to protect our region’s economy and biodiversity.”

How to identify Saffron Thistle Saffron Thistle is identified by its yellow flowers with purplish veins (most other thistle species have pink/purple flowers). It flowers from December to April, growing up to 1m tall. The leaves are glossy, dark green, with sharptipped spines, and grow out from a centre point to form a rosette. From late spring to early summer, a single stem grows from this rosette. Over time, the rosette leaves disappear and the stem divides into many branches with flowers. Seeds germinate in autumn.

How Saffron Thistle can spread Saffron Thistle spreads via stock, soil contaminated machinery and footwear, and contaminated feed. Its seed is heavy, so it mostly drops close to the parent plant, however the whole plant can also break off at the base and be blown for long distances.

Seed remains dormant in the soil for at least eight years, and seed buried more than 10mm deep may remain dormant until cultivation, or other soil disturbances, bring it to the surface.

The 25 metre lap pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston was closed on Wednesday, January 17th and will re-open on Saturday, January 20th. A small number of tiles needed to be replaced in the pool which required it be drained of water.

The rest of the Aquatic Centre, including the hydrotherapy, toddler, learn to swim, leisure, lazy river and spa pools will be open as normal while the retiling is carried out.

“The retiling had been planned to take place during these dates in order to complete the work before Swim School lessons begin on Monday, January 29th for Term 1,” said Kathy Moore, Moore Selwyn Aquatic Facilities Manager.

Aquafitness classes have not yet begun for 2018 so were not disrupted by the pool closure.
