On Tuesday, December 12th, Annabel’s Four Year Old Kindergarten held their annual Christmas concert. While it was reported that the weather was not in their favour, all agreed it was still an enjoyable night for everyone. The children had been practicing for weeks and were very excited about the opportunity to demonstrate their hard work in the Christmas concert display. They sung seven songs, including Christmas carols, waiata and action songs and really sung their hearts out. “We are extremely proud of the effort they put in,” said one of the teachers. “The night concluded with a much anticipated visit from Santa.”

Annabel’s Educare appreciated the fantastic whanau support again this year for their Christmas celebration. Celebrations began early on the morning of Friday, December 8th with a visit from Rainbow Lilly the Fairy who enchanted the youngsters with stories of Santa calling and telling her that the Educare children had had a fantastic year and deserved a visit from her. “Rainbow Lilly had just enough time to paint faces, before our whanau arrived,” reported an Educare teacher, “and then we performed a short concert of the children’s favourite Christmas songs.”

The tamariki of Annabel’s Three Year Old Kindergarten had a busy week leading up to their annual Christmas concert. One of Santa’s helpers delivered a magical post box so the children could write Christmas letters and post them to Santa! Christmas cake and fruit mince pies were created by the tamariki to share with their whanau on the night of their concert. The children enthusiastically performed their much practised Christmas tunes to the huge crowd that attended the Kindergarten concert “What a great kindergarten whanau we have - such a wonderful turnout,” one of the teachers commented! After the fantastic concert, there was a special visit from Santa! He gave all of the tamariki a special gift to open while they enjoyed an ice block in the sunshine. “Thankyou to all of our kindergarten whanau and teachers for another great year! Mere Kirihimete!”

Well we’re another year older and wiser (on reflection definitely the former - but probably not the latter!) and Christmas has rolled around again. This year has flown by and the News continues to be constantly busy - for which we are very grateful. We are so appreciative of our customers’ support, without which there would be no News. Thank you all so much for continuing to patronise us, it allows us to bring the paper to you and hopefully you all enjoy the read. We’ve been in our new location for almost a year and a half now (still on occasion folk can’t find us!!) and the extra space makes working and printing, so much easier. Printing the paper is no longer a few hours work it is a job all on its own. The circulation numbers have dramatically increased as the area has had a huge jump in population. We have also had an increase most weeks in numbers of pages - a far cry from the four page, fortnightly publication we purchased in 2002, with a circulation of around 3,000. The circulation is now close to 6,000 and apart from some special editions the pages number 20-24 each week. Some of our advertisers have been with us since day one and many others are close to that milestone. We are aware that social media is impacting on print media, but it would appear we are doing something right by identifying our market and

retaining our ’community newspaper’ feel. We very much enjoy bringing the stories of success (the occasional failure!) and the happenings and goings-on from the area in which we all live, to our readers. We also thoroughly enjoy receiving your contributions and publishing them wherever possible. We know the News is looked forward to by the number of calls to the office if it doesn’t make it into the mailbox at the expected time! Although the News, touch wood, on most occasions, appears to get to where it needs to be and when it needs to be there. So a big thank you to those that make this happen; to the youngsters who deliver in rain or shine, the RD contractors who ensure the paper gets distributed on time and the cafes and workplaces that welcome copies for their customers. Our team work hard to try and get everything right and while that doesn’t always happen (we’re only human) be assured it is never intentional. Chevonn Walker (Advertising Assistant) is the face at the front desk, while Shannon Washington is our new editorial assistant taking over when the previous assistant moved out of the area. Long serving staff member Lois Haskett (Printing/Distribution) retired this year, and so her duties have been handed over, and added to, to staff member Hannah Cunningham who’s

joined the team. Lois is still a great asset to the team, coming in weekly to tidy up for them. The office will close at midday December 21st and reopen 9am, January 15th 2018. We’re all looking forward to a well-earned break over Christmas - isn’t everyone? Do please send us in any holiday snaps (humourous is good - embarrassing perhaps not so!) or newsworthy items that could be suitable for publishing in the New Year. At Tuesday, December 4th’s Darfield High School assembly, Bena Pearson a student at the School handed out products to the girls in attendance that wouldn’t usually be in the public arena. After assessing a need and attracting funding through the Red Cross Bounce Project which provides money for youth initiatives, Bena formulated a plan to distribute sanitary products to her fellow female students. Bena came up with the idea at the last Easter Camp, which she attended with her local Youth Group. Amongst the many stalls there was one from the Red Cross promoting their Bounce Project which provides the funding for ideas that will help others. Bena completed the application form with her idea and submitted it. “I wrote that I wanted girls and women, who had trouble accessing sanitary products, or couldn't afford them because they are expensive, to be able to have some,” Bena said. Her concept idea was chosen and what followed was ten months of working with Bounce leaders and compiling an online survey, in conjunction with Darfield High School, to gauge a response and gather information. This returned results that would assist with bringing her idea to fruition. Of the 166 girls who answered the

survey, 33 said they had trouble getting products when needed. “A couple of weeks ago I went shopping with one of the Bounce leaders and almost cleared the shelves of the two supermarkets we went to, of pads and tampons! We bought

$500 worth of sanitary products which I then split up and rebundled together. It was these packs we handed out at assembly making sure they were available to all girls, so no one was singled out, or felt embarrassed,” Bena added.

On December 15th Red Bus met with representatives from Bus Go Canterbury to discuss the rationale for the Darfield to Christchurch city service concluding. They also wished to explore any ways the service could be retained/altered so regular passengers using the service, could continue to do so. However Red Bus are not able to continue delivering a service which runs at a loss. The position reached at the end of this discussion was that the current Darfield service will run for the last time on Friday, December 22nd.

A survey has been prepared that will be presented to passengers/local residents seeking feedback on service options, fare pricing and passengers readiness to commit to the use of a new service. Red Bus will consider the survey results and attempt to deliver the options best suited ie

maybe the use of a different coach/bus or a West Melton to city option, rather than the present Darfield to city one. For now though Red Bus is looking for firm commitments from enough people to justify starting a new fully commercial service as a trial in the New Year.

The Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade (DVFB) will again take to the streets of Darfield this year to share Christmas joy in the form of a community lolly throw. Fire trucks will be leaving the Station at around 5pm on Saturday, December 23rd, with volunteer firefighters on board and will drive around the township for about an hour. Last year, was the first year the Brigade toured the streets with their two Christmas decorated fire trucks, complete with Santahat wearing firefighters, distributing Christmas sweets to the children of Darfield township. The idea was initiated by the Brigade, as a way for children to become familiar with the presence of both firefighters and fire trucks in the community. A lot of the time, when children meet Brigade members, or see the fire trucks, it is because either they, or their family, require assistance.

The lolly throw is a lovely way to demonstrate that the Brigade is made up of local, everyday, neighbourly people. This year things will be done a little differently than last, with the trucks stopping at the corners of streets only. The Brigade suggest that young people (with parent supervision) walk down to the corners and wait there for the trucks to amble along. The Brigade advise that if multiple sirens are heard around the lolly throw time people shouldn’t be either concerned or alarmed. The sirens will be used to signal the arrival of the trucks and summon youngsters to their

street corners. Malvern Community Board Chair “We always find the children love the lights and the sirens,” commented a Brigade spokesperson, “and the Brigade members enjoy the happy smiling faces of the children as we dispense some Christmas cheer.”

Christmas Message from the Chair - 2017 It’s hard to believe another year has gone and it is almost Christmas. The year has certainly been an exciting one and we can easily become caught up in the busy rush at this time. This is a good time to reflect back on the past twelve months, to celebrate achievements, and plan ahead for the New Year. Recently, there was a very successful 120th celebration of Rewi Alley’s life and his tireless work to bring about lasting relationships with China is an inspiration. Meanwhile, getting the Darfield Menz Shed up and running, was all about working with the community to bring about a great place to get together, work together, and laugh together. A highlight for me personally was the Christmas Picnic in the Park, which provided an opportunity for families to get together and celebrate the year. It was a privilege to be able to have such a great event, at no cost to families. Giving back to communities is especially important at this time of the year when many people may feel lonely and sad. I trust that you, along with your family and friends will enjoy the Season’s festivities and come back safely and refreshed to take on yet another year full of promise.

The recent Money Natters session, held at the Darfield Library, turned up a good number of helpful hints about how to be clever with financial management. There was a steady stream of visitors to the Library who shared ideas they had found helpful, and they enjoyed thinking about what they do that might be a new or different idea to someone else. There were ideas around shopping such as: • Take time to plan the week’s menu with the family before going to the Supermarket, get just what is needed and be careful to ensure there won’t be heaps of left overs that get thrown out. • Don’t go down the supermarket biscuits and sweets aisle; avoid temptation. • Know exactly how all of the ‘three for a dollar’ tempters will be used before buying them. There were many other ideas, including: • Banking ideas were a popular topic, looking at debit and credit cards, online banking and the value of checking the bank balance in these days of

scams. Rename ‘home made’ to ‘Made with love by’ and take pride in a gift line that can also provide enjoyment in the making of:- fancy chutneys, potpourri, cloth shopping bags, or a special line of baking to name but a few gift ideas. • Save on the rates bill by trading in big rubbish collection bins for smaller sizes. It will encourage householders to check if they can reduce, re-use, recycle better too! “People really enjoyed thinking about and sharing ideas with others, on a topic we do not always chat over,” said Bev Elder, Elder spokesperson for the Malvern Community Hub. “We will continue to collect these ideas and produce a wee book of our shared wisdom in the New Year.” Darfield Library staff are keen to assist in making ‘Neighbourly Natters’ a regular event, on topics that are worth sharing, “look out for the topic list and feel free to add to it a topic you would like to explore,” explained Bev. “You know what they say about a problem shared?” Malvern Community Hub members have recently read •

the published research about loneliness and agree with what has been released. Members are glad that the ‘Craft and Cuppa’ group, which is held fortnightly at Darfield Baptist Church, has become such a success this year, which is helping combat loneliness. “We expect the group to grow in 2018, with elderly, live-alones, newcomers, or those folks needing a connection, all gathering to do or watch craft, and enjoy being out and about, sharing life and a cuppa,” enthused Bev. “Another answer to loneliness is the Language and Laughter course for rural women who want to be able to share in Kiwi community life. If you know anyone who would benefit from this free Monday morning course, point them in the direction of Malvern Community Hub in 2018,” Bev encouraged.

With the silly season now here it means Playcentre has ended for 2017 and what an amazing last term they have had. The sun came out and parents/ caregivers and children took advantage of that with plenty of outside play. This included water slides, child-led construction zones, planting and nurturing the Centre’s edible garden, as well celebrating a few children’s journeys to the next step of school. Families also enjoyed an excursion to Springfield Fire Station where they learnt about fire safety, the fire department communication system, protective wear and the many utilities of a fire engine. The fire truck ride and working the massive fire hose were some of the most popular activities on the day. Playcentre’s annual Christmas

party was a huge event which included a delectable feast for all, bouncy castle and Santa spending time with tamariki. Event organisers thank Don Gillanders who has been instrumental in the Christmas themed role for many years. In 2017 many new families came along and joined the Darfield Playcentre community, where they were welcomed. “We hope they have enjoyed it all and are settling in well,” said a Darfield Playcentre spokesperson, “we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2018. “To those who have moved on from Darfield, or have started their journey at primary school we wish them all the best and are grateful to have had them at our Playcentre. Darfield Goju Ryu Karate Club group, while Naomi Coleman held their last class of the year and Johnny Rogers took home on Monday, December 11th, Karate Kid 2017 trophies for which brought to an end a busy being the most impressive all twelve months for the Club. Kinjo (64), both of whom are 9th Dan Masters from the Jundokan in Okinawa. “It was a real honour for our Club to host the Sensei's as they are known as two of the top karate masters in the world and this was the first time they had been to Christchurch,” explained Hayden. The Club attracted adult students from all over New Zealand to attend a three day training seminar with the Sensei’s, all of whom walked away with a wealth of knowledge gained from the event. The Club has also recently seen 150 students (both children and adults) train together from all nine of the Goju Ryu Karate Clubs at an end of year Karate Camp, held in Hanmer Springs in early December. Earlier in the year, the Club held their annual Black Belt grading in Westport, which saw Sean McKay (55) from the Darfield Club receive his 2nd Dan Black Belt in a gruelling two days of grading. Darfield students also performed well at the Spring and Autumn Karate tournaments held in Christchurch this year, with Grace Allan, Allan Finn Valpy, Valpy Dylan Morey, Morey Samantha Partington and Hayley Coleman coming away with medals.

Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning said drivers should allow enough time to get to their destination, drive with patience and avoid taking unnecessary risks. “I encourage all road users to share the road, be aware of the dangers of driver fatigue, and make sure everyone is buckled up,” she said. “A number of cars will be towing trailers, caravans or boats. There will also be more heavy trucks, buses, campervans, cyclists and pedestrians than usual. Drivers towing trailers should remember the maximum speed limit on the open road is 90 km/h. Keep left and pull over when it is safe to let other vehicles pass. It’s important to keep a safe following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front should they stop suddenly. Always give pedestrians and cyclists plenty of space when passing.”

Holiday driving often means spending several hours behind the wheel. There are simple ways to avoid fatigue and improve driver alertness. Get plenty of sleep before the journey, and try to drive at times of the day when normally awake. Plan for rest breaks from driving every couple of hours. Get out of the vehicle and even take a short walk to improve alertness. If feeling tired, take a short nap or if possible, share the driving. Use air conditioning if the vehicle has it. Cool air will keep a driver more alert and will help avoid frustration and stress, which are major causes of fatigue. Driving can be challenging, particularly when driving longer distances than usual on busy roads and in hot weather. It’s important all drivers remain patient and calm to keep everyone safe. Let others merge into traffic and use indicators before turning or changing lanes. Keep left unless passing. For slower drivers, or those that are towing, pull over in a safe place and let others pass. Drivers are responsible for

ensuring that children under fifteen years old are restrained either in a seat belt or an approved child seat suitable for their size and weight. There is a $150 fine for each person not buckled up. “Drive safe!”

The Castle Hill Station features in the memories of many locals and a new book written by Jenny Abrahamson, Abrahamson with photography by John O’Malley focuses on the runholders John and Charles Enys who occupied the Station from 1864 until 1891. Jenny Abrahamson worked at the University of Canterbury library for over twenty years, as well as a seven year stint as a DSIR scientist after University graduation. Jenny has visited Castle Hill basin all her life, staying at Enys, a typical homebuilt New Zealand bach on the original site of the Enys brothers’ Trelissick home. John O’Malley (F.NZIPP) has been a professional photographer for the last seven years and has won a number of prestigious awards, the most recent of which was the 2017 NZIPP Canterbury/Westland Regional Photographer of the Year. The book text documents the lives of John and Charles Enys who ran sheep on Castle Hill from 1864 to 1891. John Enys was a member of the Selwyn County Council from when it started, until he returned to Cornwall, and initiating irrigation was one of his m any contributions The book records the story of these pioneer sheep farmers from Cornwall who ran Castle Hill Station for more than 25 years in the late nineteenth century. Extracts from letters by both brothers, and paintings by Charles, that they sent home to their family give a fascinating insight to a lost way of life. Over fifty paintings by Charles are reproduced, with matching

‘then and now’ photographs by John O’Malley and they depict the Trelissick buildings, neighbouring homesteads at Craigieburn, Grasmere, Cora Lynn, and Mt White, along with views of waterfalls, mountains, rivers, lakes and the limestone rocks so characteristic of Castle Hill. Further afield Charles p a i n t ed O t ar a m a ( n ow Brooksdale), Racecourse Hill and Middleton Grange. Historic photographs further complement the paintings. Additional photographs by John O’Malley feature the stunning scenery of Castle Hill. John Enys contributed much to early Canterbury and served on many committees, including the Selwyn County Council and the Canterbury Provincial Council. Sharing an interest in nature with geologist Julius Haast, Haast John Enys was involved with the founding of Canterbury Museum and the public library. Passionate about the natural world, he collected and studied whatever he could find; native plants, fossils, moa bones, fish, birds, spiders, butterflies and

moths. The Enys brothers made the most of the outdoor’s life the region offers. While they were very busy at mustering and shearing times, they could hunt, fish, ride, go boating, iceskate and explore the hills and valleys at other times. In those days of travel by coach and horses, life was very basic in their isolated high country home, but they could enjoy staying at the Christchurch Club when in Christchurch. They took turns travelling back to Enys, Cornwall several times, experiencing different routes. She herself has grown children that I think have left the nest! I just want to thank her for everything she has done for these kids. They are not the first, or probably the last. she will foster. Kids that I would imagine need a little more than most kids. God, I find my own enough let alone somebody else's! I think she is the most inspiring lady I have ever met. I love that she still finds firstly the patience, plus compassion and love to give to more children. West Melton School student, George (above), along with his fellow Years 4, 5 and 6 classmates took to the golf course (Weedons Golf Course) on Monday, November 27th having completed lessons with Canterbury Golf, at the School, prior to the visit. The outing allowed the children the opportunity of using their newly learnt skills on a real golf course.

On November, 29th and 30th West Melton School visited the House of Bricks Christmas display in Rolleston. Each of the children the opportunity to play with the Lego available, as well as view the amazing Christmas themed Lego displays. The House of Bricks trip was a fundraiser for a West Melton student, Honor, who has Cerebral Palsy. The money raised (over $700) will be going towards purchasing equipment and helping with her therapy.

Six year 13 students from Selwyn have received a tertiary scholarship from Selwyn District Council to help fund their future studies. Lucy Turner and Lincoln Roper from Lincoln High School, Ella McClure and Jack Dudley from Ellesmere College and Abigail Cider and Rachael Phillipson from Darfield High School were all awarded the 2017 Selwyn District Council Tertiary Scholarship Award. Lucy said she was overwhelmed to be announced as a recipient for the scholarship. “I was so honoured to be rewarded for my

contribution and hard work over my time at Lincoln High School,” she said. Lucy will be entering tertiary education at the University of Canterbury, studying a Bachelor of Sport. She looks to one day to be involved in High Performance sport influencing others, as well as becoming a top athlete herself. Lincoln will be entering tertiary education at Lincoln University, studying a Bachelor of Commerce (Global Business), with hopes to study a Master of Business (Global Management and Marketing). He aims to

become involved in the banking sector or owning his own business. He is looking forward to beginning study and said “the money from this scholarship will be beneficial as I enter my studies next year, although this is only a part of what I have received. On top of this I have gained an opportunity to network with influential individuals and likeminded people to enable me to continue my ambitions.” The money from the scholarship will mainly go towards course fees, stationery, hall fees and other smaller necessities for the students.

Residential building activity has remained steady in Selwyn during the year to the end of September 2017, despite a downturn in other parts of Canterbury. The latest quarterly economic monitor from analysts Infometrics shows a total of 410 new residential building consents were issued in Selwyn during the June to September quarter; 53 more than in the previous quarter, and 70 more than in the same quarter last year. On an annual basis to the end of September the number of consents issued in Selwyn was the same as the previous year, compared to an eighteen percent drop over the wider Canterbury region. Selwyn also continued to record strong results in retail and tourism spending. In the year to September 2017 tourists spent around $101 million in Selwyn, an increase of thirteen percent over the previous year and continuing a positive trend after a seven percent increase in the

year to June 2017. A strengthening retail sector saw spending increase by ten percent over the year to September 2017, well ahead of the national figure of 3.8 percent. The report identified Selwyn’s sustained population growth as a key driver of the increase. Overall, Selwyn’s economy is continuing to perform better than most of its neighbours in many key indicators. The district Gross Domestic Product (GDP) showed growth at 1.6 percent for the quarter, up from 1.1 percent in the previous quarter. This is ahead of the Canterbury regional average of 1.3 percent, but below the national average of 2.5 percent. Selwyn’s GDP growth over the past 10 years remains the highest of any city or district in New Zealand. Unemployment in Selwyn now sits at 2.2 percent for the year, down from 2.3 percent a year earlier and well below the New Zealand average of 4.9 percent and the Canterbury region at

3.8 percent. Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton said the latest results show Selwyn’s economy is growing at a steady rate, and prospects look good over the coming year. “Job creation and economic optimism is high in the district at present,” he said. “Increasingly, Selwyn people can live and work in the district as our economy forges ahead. Our continuing population growth and the number of new homes being built is testament to the lifestyle and opportunities that are available in Selwyn.” Future district growth is expected to be driven by the primary sector, taking the place of residential construction. Infometrics estimates that the total dairy payout in the district will be $26m higher this season than in 2016/17, with beef and lamb prices also high. The new Southern Motorway extension, which will be completed in early 2020, will also enhance the district’s p ro sp ects for long-term economic growth.

When the West Melton Gymnastics Club held its annual prize-giving on Saturday, December 16th, it was attended and enjoyed by Club members and their families. The event was a fantastic way to end a busy and successful year, one that saw many outstanding competition results achieved. Head coach, Pam Higgins, celebrated her eleventh successful year of running the Club. The Club re-opened in 2006 after it was discovered a range of unused gym club gear was stored in the West Melton Community Centre. Pam who had three young children at the time, engaged the help of a group of Playcentre mums, and dusted off the mats and equipment. The Club has now built up to provide a range of weekly classes. It offers preschool and gym fun grade

classes, through to elite. West Melton Gym Club began attending competitions in 2009, with current members traveling to competitions as far west as Hokitika and Greymouth, down to Ashburton and up to Kaikoura. This year 33% of the members attending the competitions were placed first, second or third on average at each event. The Club continues to thrive with Pam, her now young adult daughter Kyla, Kyla and the many other volunteer coaches, all sharing their passion for gymnastics. There are currently 118 members, and all are looking forward to moving into the new sports and community centre currently being built in West Melton. The move will allow for member expansion and enable Pam to add additional classes

to the programme. Bowls Canterbury Area has just concluded their Pre-Christmas Competition and the local Darfield Club has had its share of success in this. The Club’s Men’s Three Fours team finished very strongly to win their section against Burnside thus earning the right to play in the Elite section next year. Not to be outdone Darfield’s Two Fours team finished first equal with another country Club - Southbridge - to gain promotion to a higher grade next year also. In the Women’s Fives, Darfield Bowling Club finished a very close second to Woolston Park, while in the Rowntree Cup, Darfield finished a very creditable third. Altogether a great result for all players concerned showing Darfield can keep up with the best of them!!
