The Sculptors, Deng Bangzhen, Bangzhen Rewi’s foster son and his wife Lu Bo were honoured guests.

Over thirty New Zealand Alley family and seventeen Duan family, descendants of Rewi’s foster sons joined the Chinese Consul-General Wang Zhijian, Zhijian in Springfield.

We were joined by the Mayors of Christchurch, Hurunui and Waimakariri. Professor Bill Wilmott, Wilmott who was the instigator of the first Rewi Alley memorial here in Selwyn, spoke about his initial visits to ask the people of Springfield to consider a memorial to Rewi Alley.

The new Faulkner Way between Springfield's Rewi Alley Memorial and Kowai Pass Domain is a lovely asset for the area, for walking and cycling.

I'd like to thank Murray and Lesley Faulkner for very generously donating the land, and also the members of the Springfield Township committee for their hard work, including Graeme Dawson for donation of materials, 73 Hire for donation of use of their equipment, Rob Curle for the digger work, shaping the track, placing the culvert and construction of the retaining wall, Mike Warwick for the fencing and also the Domain Board for construction of the east section of the path.

Last Sunday was a great afternoon for the inaugural Country Christmas Picnic in the Park, held at Westview Park - near the Skate ramp.

The weather was outstanding and organisers were thrilled with the good turnout.

Food, drinks, bouncy castles, Pedalmania, music, facepainting and much, much more ensured everyone was kept entertained. It was an opportunity for many to have a pre-Christmas catch-up with friends and neighbours before numerous workplaces and schools close down for the festive season break.

The community owes a massive thank you to the team who put the event together and without exception everyone is hoping for a repeat performance next year.

Springfield people who erected the original statue and Information Centre had many stories to share, including the location of a 1991 time capsule under the statue. Mayor Sam Broughton thanked key personnel including Bob White, White Chairperson of Springfield Township Committee in 1991 and Marj White, White Ted and Juliet Johnston who boarded the sculptors for several months and Murray and Lesley Faulkner whose woolshed was the site for the statute’s construction.

Zannah Johnson, Johnson who won the Secondary Schools competition in 1997 and travelled to China as her prize, was also present.

The information panels have been increased by the addition of panels and road sign in Mandarin. It is expected that there will be an increase in Chinese tourists stopping in Springfield. A brochure about the site of the original school and schoolhouse was distributed and the Selwyn Sister City Committee is seeking feedback prior to making a new information panel.

Visitors had an opportunity to visit Springfield School and to view photographic displays over afternoon tea.

The Springfield event was part of a two day commemoration which included the unveiling of a plaque in the Christchurch Arts Centre on the site of the former Christchurch Boys’ High School, Rewi’s secondary school. Delegates visited the Canterbury Museum and saw artefacts that Rewi Alley sent from China to Roger Duff, Duff the then Director of the Museum. A symposium of speakers, from China and New Zealand, heard about Rewi’s life here and in China.

Hurunui Council opened a Garden of Reflection on the site of the former Amberley School where Rewi’s father was Headmaster for seven years.

This garden has a Chinese bridge as a design feature.

To all our customers,

Some years I have been really ready for Christmas to arrive so that I could have a brief breather from the year’s hectic schedule.

However, this year, at the time of writing this message, it seems strange to be thinking about Christmas already. Perhaps this is because Parliament has only just got underway again recently after the post-election hiatus so it seems odd to be taking a break again soon.

I would like to thank the people of Malvern and the rest of Selwyn for giving me your continued support this year to return to Parliament as your local MP. I am more determined than ever to keep standing up for the things that matter to our communities and Selwyn MP Amy Adams. make sure your voices are heard.

It has been another busy year in our region. Some of the highlights of 2017 for me were performing the role of Chieftain at this year’s Hororata Highland Games in November and getting to shave Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton’s hair off as part of Darfield High School’s ‘Shave for a Cure’ fundraiser back in April. Other events that I enjoyed attending in Malvern during the year were the Malvern and Courtenay A & P Shows and October celebrations to mark Darfield Hospital’s 90th anniversary.

During 2017 I have met with constituents from all over Selwyn and listened to their concerns on a wide range of issues. If you have a problem or a query that you think I may be able to assist with please contact my office in Templeton for advice. The office will be closed for the Christmas-New Year break from Friday, December 22nd and will re-open again on Monday, January 15th.

Finally I would like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

On December 12th, two years ago Sugar & Spice became More For You, Skin - Beauty and Nails and celebrated with one hell of an opening party (“we could hardly move in the salon”) in their fabulous new Mid West Mews building.

Jayne Redmond (nee Moore) joined forces with her twin sister Sarah Barnard (nee Moore) to launch the new Salon - almost doubling the space they had in the previous shop. The brand new, purpose built, Salon with state of the art facilities and a tranquil environment has enabled the business to grow and grow and the change of name, a play on words using the owners’ maiden names, has been an outstanding success also.

In 2016 the twins took the leap and opened their second Salon in the brand new shopping complex in West Melton, but with a different name this time ‘Affinity Beauty and Bodycare’.

Both Salons are thriving and the pair have put it down to hard work and their amazing staff, of which they now have eight.

“Some of our staff have been with us for six years now,” Jayne said, “we all work well together and our diverse skill I think is what gives our Salons the edge.

Approximately fifty people attended the Malvern School of Music High Achievers concert, last Sunday, in Darfield's Trinity Church.

“The concert was greatly enjoyed by everyone,” said Pauline Sewell of Malvern School of Music. “We really appreciate the support and encouragement that the audience gave the students. It was good to see both young and older musicians at different levels, on various instruments, as well as singing, performing in front of an audience. A lot of practice goes into perfecting your chosen exam pieces, so having a chance to play/sing to friends and family is a great way to let them hear the progress that has been made.”

Paige was originally our ‘afterschool-girl’ and following completion of her training in 2015 has become a skilled and well accomplished member of staff. Inge has been with us through thick and thin and has built herself quite a reputation for her amazing European massage skills.”

The opening of Affinity in West Melton has seen Lauren Blake welcomed to the team. Lauren (originally from the North Island) is now well settled in Darfield. This year a new addition to the staff has been Logan Langridge who works in both the Darfield and West Melton Salons.

“Sarah and I are still hands on,” Jayne added. “I don’t think I would ever want to leave that part of the business, the customers are the reason I love coming to work and if I didn’t get to still have that interaction I think I would really miss it,” she said.

The move to the new More For You premises has had much positive feedback and the opening of Affinity has afforded customers more flexibility with appointments, as well as the ability to form a new strong client base in the West Melton area.

“We have also added a lot of new treatments to the Salon since its opening,” Jayne and Sarah said, “Pure Fiji Spa treatments and deluxe pedicure chairs for a real pampering experience.”

Sarah and Jayne are specialist in some of the more advanced Medi Spa skin treatments and have invested in a state of the art photographic skin scanner.

“We have had a huge success with our ‘Little Miss Spa Parties’, hosting a birthday party almost every Saturday afternoon,” the twins said.

This year also marked ten years in business for Jayne and she looks forward to many more.

Sarah and Jayne thank their loyal customers and wish them all a safe and happy Christmas and holiday period.

“We will be open during the break, only closed Christmas eve and stat days. We still have some spaces available due to extra staff rostered on for Ch r is tm a s w ee k, ” t hey concluded.

Over 400 Malvern district preschool, primary and high school children gathered on Friday, December 8th in the Darfield High School (DHS) hall to showcase their Kapa Haka skills to an audience of parents, teachers and community members.

DHS Kapa Haka opened the show with a strong performance

which had the walls vibrating!

They were followed by preschool children from both Annabel’s Educare and Darfield Preschool, they proudly stood on stage and put on a delightful show for all those watching.

There was then the opportunity for the primary school groups to perform on stage, with Darfield Primary School (DPS) juniors leading off, followed by their senior Kapa Haka group.

The Malvern Collective Group, which includes students from

Hororata, Sheffield, Glentunnel and Windwhistle Primary Schools followed the DPS’s outstanding performance, with their own amazing one. Kirwee Model School rounded the show off with their marvellous exhibition of talent and skill.

The children from all the schools stood with such pride and enthusiasm while representing their school and they each put on a show that they could be proud of.

It was an action packed day at the Canterbury Mini Motocross Club on December, 3rd with sixty-five Mini Racers aged between four and twelve years old racing at the Club’s Christmas Fun Day. There were three rounds of racing for the day, before Father Christmas arrived; doing that in style in a hot rod. Once he was settled in he gave each racer a handful of goodies, all of which was made possible by the Club’s generous sponsors. The

goodies were gratefully received by the excited children, all with big smiles on their faces.

The day included a mum’s race, which saw some very competitive racing, along with lots of determination to get around the mini's track in very hot temperatures! Sahar Pearce took out first place and happily received the large trophy that went with winning.

racing and the parents watching. Two children at a time raced down the drag strip, with the winner of each race going through to the next round until a winner was found.

This year there was also the secret father’s race, which had been the talk of the Club for a couple of weeks leading up to the event. On the day there were sixteen dads, on children’s bikes of various sizes, lined up and ready to find out the rules for racing. They were reported to be rather surprised when they discovered that the aim was to be the slowest racer, not the fastest, and that they had to ride up and around a cone then back to the start/ finish line without their feet touching the ground or touching any other rider. This proved to be extremely challenging for most and provided the spectators with many laughs.

The winner for the slowest was Cody McMaster, McMaster who aptly received a trophy with a snail on it!

Even with the extremely hot conditions everyone had an awesome, fun filled day which would not have been possible without the much appreciated venue for the day. The event took place in a paddock kindly loaned by local farmer Mark Sampson, Sampson and was an ideal spot with lots of room for the children and parents to have fun racing.

The Canterbury Mini Motocross Committee wish all the Mini Racers and their families an amazing Christmas and safe holidays.

Contact us for an appointment Don’t Miss Christmas Christmas is probably the most anticipated and celebrated holiday each year. Our homes get transformed with Christmas trees, Christmas lights and Christmas decorations, there is Christmas music everywhere. We have Christmas Parties, Christmas holidays, people buy Christmas presents and often pay for it months later.

But amongst all the activity of Christmas, the original and true meaning of Christmas is often crowded out, forgotten or ignored. Maybe it’s your busyness that crowds it out. Lots of us find that with all the parties and end of year activities, we don’t have a chance to stop. Maybe your familiarity with the story of Jesus’ birth doesn’t inspire you anymore. Lots of people have heard about Christmas from childhood, but haven’t looked at it again as an adult. Maybe it’s the opposite, you just don’t know what the fuss is about. More and more people have never heard what the true meaning of Christmas is.

For many people it’s Santa Claus who is the central figure of Christmas. But Christmas has it’s original and true meaning in Jesus Christ. Christmas is a time to acknowledge that “God loved the people of the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.” (John 3.16) Jesus Christ is God’s gift to all the people of the world and not only does he give true meaning to Christmas, but he also gives meaning to our lives both now and in eternity. John’s gospel in the Bible is a historical account of the life of Jesus. In John 10.10 Jesus said, “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” Why not download a Bible app or dust off a Bible on the bookshelf and read for yourself why Jesus and Christmas are so significant.

If you’ve attended a performance of Handel’s Messiah, you’ve heard his setting of the text “Comfort Ye My People”. The recitative continues: “comfort ye My people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her Iniquity is pardoned.”

2017 has been a year of high drama in world politics. Brexit, the US election, and our own NZ election. It’s been a year of stories of unspeakable violence perpetrated on the innocent who were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time, attending a concert, going to market, gathering outdoors for some fun. Particularly at this point in 2017 I want to hear words of comfort, I want to be reassured, I want to feel at peace - and I imagine you do too. At Christmas we welcome Jesus as the Prince of Peace because the Biblical concept of peace is relational. It is not something for one person to feel. The true Biblical concept of peace has to do with a sense of unity and harmony with others, with creation and with God. Peace is never a state of being for one person, God’s peace is in the context of the whole community. Peace is not something you are going to be able to wait around for, expecting it to float down on you. Peace on Earth, goodwill to others is the message of the angels who announced the coming of the Prince of Peace to the shepherds.

You do not have to consider yourself a religious person to make this a way of living. Peace is something we can foster in our own relationships with other people. Peace-making can be an everyday activity for all of us. Peace is something we are able to build when we ask for forgiveness, foster reconciliation, leave past hurts behind, because that is what Jesus, as the Prince of Peace is willing to do for us.

I agree the Buxus and Teucrium hedges do look good but in recent times more people are looking to a number of excellent native plants to create something a little different to traditional choices.

My favourites include Hebe Topiaria, Hebe Southerlandii, Muehlenbeckia astonii, Corokia cotoniaster and Coprosmas rubra, viresens, propinnqua and crassifolius. The hebes both have small blue green leaves and grow into a tight round ball which makes them ideal for trimming into a formal looking small hedge. The other plants I have mentioned are less formal looking but will make an interesting and eye-catching statement as a small to medium height hedge.

For local, talented dancer, fourteen year old, Teresa Barnhill, Barnhill the dance future is indeed looking bright.

Teresa, who has been dancing since she was five years old, has just been accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance Associate Programme based in Wellington.

The programme identifies Ballet and Contemporary Dance students who have the talent for a career in dance performance, and acceptance is strictly by two hour audition, plus a written application and photograph from the prospective student.

A s s o c i a t e s t r av e l f r o m throughout the country to the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington for four weekends of tuition a year, and one full week in July. Training in Contemporary Dance and Classical Ballet is offered with the July week also including Hip Hop in the schedule.

Teresa competes and performs in Contemporary, Ballet (Classical), Lyrical and Jazz Dance and for the past two years has been training with the award winning Levings School of Dance in Christchurch. Seven months into installing Stage 2 of the Canterbury Plain Water (CPW) scheme we are happy with the progress and are moving ahead at a great rate. We have many different crews working on different sites either laying pipe or installing the infrastructure, such as pump stations, turn outs and pressure reducing valves. This makes for a very busy project with people and materials moving around the community.

We are on track to have the scheme completed, tested and ready to turn on the irrigation on September, 1st 2018.

One interesting process that you may have seen in action is the welding of the high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, joining the 100m lengths together in the properties. This process is called ‘Butt Welding’ where we join two pipes together without overlapping them. The pipe has to be lined up and able to be moved in and

out. The large HDPE pipe weighs twenty tonne, so off cuts of small pipe are used as rollers under the 100m lengths.

Cleanliness is vital to achieve a good quality weld. The pipe ends are clamped, moved together and checked to ensure it is a perfect fit.

The heater plate is inserted to melt each end, to 125 degrees Celsius and when there is sufficient molten plastic around the diameter of the two pipe ends the heat plate is removed and the ends are brought together to set. The pipe is then left to cool and must be undisturbed for a required time.

This time depends on the size and thickness of the pipe.

For the large HDPE pipe the cooling time is one hour with a total weld time of three and a half hours. We have three crews installing the HDPE pipe and each crew has welders working ahead of them to ensure that when the trencher arrives the

pipe is ready to go. Over the total project we will be doing over 2,000 welds on the HDPE pipe.

The summer holidays are a welcome break for the crew and we will be closing all sites over Christmas and New Year from December, 22nd and returning January, 8th. During this time there will be occasional checks on sites.

To clear the roads for the holiday period we intend to have completed all road crossings and reduced all traffic management.

We are aware that our work is at times challenging for everyone in the community, especially with the detour areas where traffic speed is reduced.

We appreciate that this can at times this can be frustrating and we ‘thank you’ for your patience with our work.

At the beginning of 2017, a Year 8 cohort, decided to plant a garden on the grounds of Darfield High School (DHS), which led on to a range of learning opportunities around sustainability, garden preparation and much more.

Throughout the process the students were curious to know what was going to be done with the produce once they had grown it. This then led to the group looking at child poverty in New Zealand. Megan Pepper, Pepper the Year 8 Dean said, “our students were shocked that so many Kiwi children went to school each day without basics such as food, warm clothes or shoes and they wanted to do something about this situation.”

The Year 8 students decided they wanted to help out with this appalling situation and the idea of a Market Fair was born to raise money for KidsCan. “The students deduced that this is where the money was needed

to help other children,” Megan explained.

KidsCan is a charitable trust created to help Kiwi children living in hardship reach their full potential and create brighter futures for themselves. The Trust provides those children in need with food, clothing and health items at school, so they can get into the classroom and in a position to learn.

The whole Year 8 contingent (168 students) designed a market fair that took place on December, 8th. This would enable them to sell their produce, as well as create a fun -filled day where other products could also be sold to raise funds for the cause.

The students worked tirelessly inviting all the schools in the Selwyn District and placing invitations in the letterboxes of all households in the area.

The day dawned extremely hot and sunny as the pupils set up their forty-four stalls on the school field. Stalls varied from

bouncy castles, candy floss, lucky-dips, selling baking, a sausage sizzle and bacon butties to name but a few.

“The students are incredibly proud of what they have achieved, as are the staff,” Megan said. “We had a huge amount of amazing feedback from the public saying how fantastic our students were, they really made us proud,” she added.

The market fair raised over $2,000 for KidsCan, on what was a massively hot and busy day for everyone involved and concluded not only an educational year long project, but a fun one as well.

Methven speed skier and Mount Hutt Race coach, Tawny Wagstaff has been skiing for more than 35 seasons and is about to embark on overseas competition in one of the fastest, non-motorised, sports known.

“The freedom of going as fast as possible without boundaries or limitations is seemingly written into my DNA,” Tawny laughed.

After research, Tawny came to Darfield to have his massive skis (250cm) professionally tuned on the new state of the art equipment now installed at Gnomes Alpine Sports, as well as undertake a custom boot fit before heading overseas to take on the world at speed skiing.

Speed skiing, is a sport where age is no limiting factor for victory on an international level.

New Zealand doesn't have a fully homologated speed track, but has plenty of scope for

“My gear design and build, leg fairings and suit have been designed and manufactured right here in New Zealand with the help of small companies locally and nationally and many hours from myself,” Tawny explained. “Other gear such as my helmet and skis are sourced from Switzerland and Austria.”

Tawny is heading to World Cup events in Europe where speed skiers can reach speeds of up to 200 kph (maximum speed ever reached is 254 kph).

“Tracks are on average 1,000 metres long, the middle 100 metres is the speed trap and the last 300 metres the run out zone,” Tawny explained. “It is also one of the few sports where the difference between male, female and age is minimal. Speeds are measured over a one hundred metre section and are down to .01 of a kilometre per hour.”

Earlier this year Tawny raced in the S2 category for two races in Canada. “I won my first race; first New Zealander to win a world cup S2 race and followed up the second day with a fourth place.”

This and other competitive results in his first season saw Tawny gain eligibility to race in the World Cup circuit. He will leave New Zealand in January heading to France, followed by Finland, Canada, Sweden and Turkey, competing in twelve World Cup races and two FIS races.

Leith and Ally Kerr of Gnomes Alpine Sports were thrilled to be

able to assist with Tawny’s prerace preparation explaining that the new high tech equipment they have just had installed in their workshop, has the capability of, and enabled them to, tune skis to a World Cup standard.

“It’s been an exciting project working with Tawny over the past month,” Leith and Ally explained. “He approached Gnomes Alpine Sports with the task of tuning his skis as he was aiming to hit speeds exceeding 200kph for the Speed Skiing FIS World Cup. “His approach coincided perfectly with the arrival of our hi -tech base grinder and following weeks of extensive research, we spent two days carefully stone grinding Tawny’s three pairs of race skis with different structures*, to cover various snow types.

“Additionally, we fitted Tawny with Zipfit liners and Sidas custom foot-beds for the ultimate in control and performance,” the couple said.

“It was great to work with Tawny on something that’s at the pinnacle of the sport. We wish him the very best toward achieving his ultimate goal; that of becoming the fastest human on skis, in the world,” Leith and Ally said.

Maintenance & Support Assistant Rakaia Island Limited (RIL) is a large scale family dairy farming business comprising six dairy units, support and cropping land across two locations: Rakaia Island, Southbridge and Woodstock Farms near Oxford.

A Maintenance and Support Assistant is required to assist in maintaining the infrastructure of these dairy farms and associated support operations.

This position will be based at Woodstock Farms, near Oxford.

The position would suit someone with the following attributes: • Good communication skills and fits in well with the team and be able to relate to staff from different ethnic groups • Ability to work unsupervised and prioritise workload • Previous farming background • Welding skills • Tractor/loader operational skills • Excellent mechanical, engineering and general maintenance knowledge.
