Competing for New Zealand in the Under 17 Mounted Games team, Kirwee’s Leah Zydenbos has just seen her team named as the World Champions. This followed an outstanding competition held at the Auckland Showgrounds, from November 23rd to 26th and attended by teams from eight countries.

Mounted Games is a fast paced, action packed discipline with riders and mounts needing to display an incredible amount of fitness, training and skill. In this equestrian sport of extremely fast games people of all ages can compete, on ponies up to a height of 15 hands (152 cm).

Not only must riders be athletic

and strong, but they must also be possessed of wonderful horsemanship skills and great hand to eye coordination. Their ponies are required to be nimble, fast, strong and brave, but most of all must have a great brain!

The New Zealand Mounted Games Association (NZMGA) is an affiliate of the International Organisation, of which there are twenty member countries from all over the world.

Competitions are run in age groups ranging from the Under 12 year old ‘minis’ to the veterans at 35 years and over.

The Darfield Bridge Club’s annual bridge tournament was held recently and attracted ninety-four people from all over Canterbury.

This year the tournament raised $1,250, which was then donated to the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust. The Trust relies on the community to keep its life-saving service operating.

The Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust covers the largest, single geographical area in New Zealand; watching over the lives of more than 600,000 people.

Their Canterbury based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and West Coast based NZCC Rescue

Helicopter are ready to respond twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for 365 days a year and this is only possible thanks to the generous support from communities. Last year alone, the Helicopter flew over 1,000 missions throughout the

Canterbury region.

The Darfield Bridge Club thank all the supporting businesses in the area, which made not only the tournament possible, but also for them to raise the money for the donation.

Leah has been riding since she was four years old and has participated in Mounted Games for the past seven years. She regularly competes both in Canterbury and throughout New Zealand - retaining a pony (Cheeky) in Auckland for North Island events.

“We supplied ponies for another international team

(Australia) which we took up to Auckland,” Leah said, “the impact on the animals can be big but we travelled up early, so as to have time for recovery.”

Selection for the New Zealand team was by trialling and careful viewing by selectors throughout the season. “The national individuals, held in April, and which I also won,”

Leah commented, “were probably the main trials.”

Leah, who is a Year 11 student at Rangi Ruru, comes from a horse riding family with her mother, father and brother all keen Mounted Games participants. Her pony club background is with the local Bangor Pony Club, but more recently with the Mounted Games World Championships firmly in her sights most weekends have involved North Island travel to train with rest of her team. A strategy that definitely paid off with the World Championship win now confirmed.

features an illuminated 250 metre bush tunnel, life-size historical figures and many other surprises.

The family opened their Christmas time tunnel for the first time last year and due to popular demand it is back again with an expanded collection of things to see.

The project is a family effort for the Smithies, with almost all of their eleven children involved in setting the whole thing up, from stringing the lights, through to creating the different characters

and dreaming up surprises for the visitors.

Visitors are asked to donate a gold coin that assists with covering expenses and will also contribute to projects in India that set families free from poverty by helping them establish small businesses.

Talented, local twelve year old dancer, Manaia Davies, Davies has just arrived back in the country after representing New Zealand at the Hip Hop Unite World Championships held in Holland from October 19th to 21st. The international event, which included seventeen different countries and nine international world renowned judges, consisted of workshops, as well as the dance competitions.

The opportunity to dance on a world stage is a rare one, and Manaia embraced the opportunity threefold, representing New Zealand in three out of the seven different New Zealand groups attending the competition.

At the beginning of 2017 Manaia was dancing solely with the group Rebel Youth (based in Auckland). However as the year progressed others requested her talent in their groups, which resulted in her being in Christchurch team, Aperture and a duo

performance called Mia and Mya (from Nelson).

“We certainly didn’t expect all three teams to make it through to the world championships, it came as quite a shock,” explained Manaia’s mother Yerane Davies. “It meant a lot more planning and a lot more training, but she was certainly up for the challenge.”

Being a Hip Hop artist doesn’t come without its sacrifices; something Manaia is acutely aware of with nearly all her time dedicated to training running up to the World Championship, as well as extensive travel up and down the country to different training sessions. This has also resulted in her missing time from school, “she is a capable student academically, and so she goes to her teachers requesting school work to take away with her,” Yerane explained.

placing fifth, ‘Aperture’ was placed fourth and the duo ‘Mia and Mya’ was also placed fourth.

Outstanding results when competing against such a large field of skilled dancers.

With the competition over, a rest period would be expected, however Manaia made the most of her time overseas by attending two dance camps instead. One of which was in Germany and would, had it not been preceded by the Netherlands competition, have been a challenge to attend.

She spent five days at this camp working with top choreographers from around the world. “This camp was the highlight of the whole trip for me,” enthused Yerane. “Manaia was selected out of all the other attendees to perform a solo of one of the dances that she had learnt, as a demonstration to the others. This was such an honour and showed her current skill level. To be a role model for her peers was outstanding.”

Now that Manaia is back home, she is taking some much needed time to rest before she heading off to two dance camps in January 2018, and the start of the 2018 regional competitions.

“She loves what she does and loves sharing her knowledge, as long as she continues to love it we, as her parents, will continue to support her in every way possible,” concluded Yerane.

The end of year Showcase for TM Dance World (TMDW) took place on Sunday, December 3rd at Villa Maria College, Christchurch in front of an audience of approximately 300 guests.

One hundred TMDW students danced their way into the hearts of those watching and were joined by dancers from Malvern Ballet School who performed two items.

TMDW dancers ranged in age from three years old to eighteen and presented a variety of genres to the audience including: Jazz, Hip Hop, Acrobatics and Ballet.

TMDW Principal, Tara McKeown had pleasure in awarding ‘The Most Promising Dancer’ to Millie Wilson and The ‘Overall Excellence in Dance’ to Caitlin Knowles at the event.

Zing In her closing address Tara made mention of the new studios currently under construction in Darfield and planned to be ready for the new term next year. She also spoke of dancers from the School who will be performing on the high seas as part of the entertainment package on a cruise ship travelling from Australia to New Zealand in April 2018.

Tara thanked all the TMDW dancers for their hard work and effort, not only in the Showcase presentation, but throughout the year.

Mention was also made of all those supporters, sponsors, back-of-stage assistants, plus family and friends who had assisted; before Tara wished everyone a safe and restful holiday.

When young six year old Ruby Peacock is driven twice weekly from Springfield to Christchurch for gymnastics the fuel costs are met by the family’s local service station.

“This is so very much appreciated,” said Ruby’s mother Vicky.

Vicky “We are thrilled that Ruby has excelled and been selected in the gymnastics development squad for her age, and this sponsorship enables us to ensure she attends when she needs to,” Vicky added.

T alented gymnast Ruby started attending recreational gymnastic classes when she was only three years old, with her mother running the small group called 'Little Springers' in Springfield.

“She loved the classes and quickly became a fan so it wasn't long before she was searching for the latest tricks she could perfect on You Tube,” Vicky said. “With determination she taught herself many routines from the video channel.”

When Ruby turned four Vicky took her to the Christchurch School of Gymnastics where the coach recognised her ability and put her in a pre-competition class. Ruby has since switched to the Olympia Gymnasium in Wigram and last year competed in the South Island Gymnastics Championships achieving a fifteenth overall placing in the South Island U8 category when she was only six years old!

She was also placed fourth in the same age group on the beam.

This year Ruby has been selected for a development squad which involves six hours per week of intensive training.

“This is a huge commitment for us as a family,” Vicky explained.

“Juggling work, a younger sibling and travel commitments takes its toll, but Ruby was desperate to continue in the development squad. We have been so lucky to be supported by our friends and were totally blown away by the fuel offer from Sue and Brent Davis, Davis the b u s i n e s s ow n er s. T h ey commented that their philosophy is 'Local and Loyal' and they would love to assist Ruby in getting to Wigram twice a week,” Vicky added.

Vicky passed on the testimony from the Head Coach of Olympia, Angharad Wittle (AJ AJ), AJ who said: “Ruby is a promising young gymnast who has been selected for the junior development

programme at Olympia Gymnastic Sports. The programme identifies gymnasts who show potential for national and international representation in the future. Ruby is training for Step 2 and will also be working on advanced skill development.

Ruby works extremely hard and is committed to her gymnastics attending six hours of training per week despite her long commute from home.”

Playing Touch for their local teams has paid off for thirteen year olds, Tyler TapaTapa-Wither and Tom Ruwhiu, Ruwhiu both of whom were recently selected to play for the Canterbury Under 14’s touch rugby team.

Both boys have been playing touch for a couple of years, and had their start in school teams.

Tom also had some time playing for the Prebbleton Development team, Years 5 and 6, and he played in the Inter Module Tournament. The two have since moved to Club teams, with Tyler currently playing for the Burnham Club and Tom joining Simon Moriarty’s team ‘Touch n Go’. This has seen them playing in the Prebbleton and Rolleston Touch Modules for their respective teams. Playing in these teams, which in turn made them eligible to participate in the Canterbury trials, has enabled them to achieve outstanding results.

“I first trialled for Canterbury Under 13’s two years ago and missed out,” Tom explained.

“Then last year I tried again making the Canterbury Under 14’s Development Team. This was a fantastic experience as the team came second in the South Island Inter Provincial Series. This year I trialled again hoping to make the Canterbury Under 14 A team (Red) and I was extremely excited when I did.”

This was the first year that Tyler had trialled for the Canterbury touch team, “trials were two days of hard out touch games,” Tyler explained. “I was really thrilled to be selected into the team and feel honoured to be representing Canterbury Touch for the first time,” he enthused.

“I've already learnt so much from our two great coaches and to date my touch skills have really progressed well.”

Tryouts were not something new to Tyler, as he has been a Canterbury Country Rugby representative and an Ellesmere Rugby representative for the last two years.

their other Under 14 team members for an hour and a half practice on a Friday night, as well as on a Sunday morning.

“As a member of the team it is important to look after yourself,” Tom explained. “Personally, I have to keep fit and train with the team twice a week.

Furthermore I need to nurse any injuries I might sustain properly, so they doesn’t hold me back from games.”

The team has just finished competing in the Southern Zone Tournament against Otago, Southland and Queenstown in Oamaru.

“The final game was a drop out final, this is where players drop down from six to five then four every few minutes, until there is a result,” explained Melanie Tapa, Tapa Tyler’s mother. “It was very nerve racking to watch, the stand were all on their feet screaming for Canterbury,” she said. “Though the game went down to the wire, Canterbury beat Otago with a score of four points to three.”

To the Editors: FOR ALL THOSE WHO OPERATE STALLS WITH HONESTY BOXES It is the time of year again that those who should know better start stealing from roadside honesty boxes/stalls.

I have one of these honesty boxes outside my gate (in the West Melton/Rolleston area) where I sell vegetables from a stall.

Yesterday (Sunday, December 3rd) someone in a red car (it was a modern, expensive vehicle) stole eggs and vegetables.

I have leads to who this is likely to be and I will follow it up and hand the person over to the Police - you can bet on that!

My printer suddenly doesn’t work or won’t scan…..

This can happen for many reasons; an update from Windows; an update from Brother (HP, Canon, Epson or whoever); your Antivirus.

One week it was a Norton firewall that suddenly started blocking access to the network Brother printer and didn’t release the scanning function until I gave the printer trusted status in the Norton programme settings.

First step is to go into Control Panel and right click on the Printer with the problem and left click remove. If you have a USB cable connected to your machine from the printer remove it. Go on-line to the web site of the printer maker and look for downloads. Search for your model of printer (usually found on the front or top of the printer) Once there check that you are going to be downloading the correct software for your computer. Go to Control Panel and system and look for the Operating software and whether yours is 32bit or 64bit. Brother and HP will work this out for you, others you will have to hunt for the correct version. Note down the file name that is downloading. While you are waiting for the software to download go back into Control Panel and Programmes and Feature looking for the old printer software. When you find it Left click once to highlight it then at the top Left click uninstall. Once this finishes you will need to restart your computer; but just make sure that the download has finished before you do that.

Once restarted go the Downloads folder and double Left click the file that you have just downloaded. This will start the install programme. Do as it says; including if it says connecting the USB cable to your machine, or if on a network - searching for your printer. Once it has installed then restart once more and you will be fine ….unless your Antivirus blocks it. If you try printing and scanning and they both don’t work, then head to the Antivirus and settings and look for Personal Firewall. See if you can enter your printer in there to allow access. If it gets too hard call your computer man.

Senior Constable David Pitkethley (Dave Dave) Dave completed his last day of service for the New Zealand Police on Friday, last week.

Dave has served the Police for twenty years in the Canterbury Policing District with the past 11¾ of those years spent serving the Darfield Community and wider Selwyn District.

Dave is well respected in the local Darfield community and outlying districts due to his excellent Police work, involvement in community organisations, dedication and commitment to make our communities safer.

I have been particularly impressed with Dave’s no-nonsense approach to Policing and the rapport he has with local youth in the community. I am sure many of our youth locally have benefitted from Dave’s concern and words of wisdom, over the years.

Dave’s Policing skills and local knowledge will be a huge loss to the Darfield Police and community.

Rural Policing in small communities can take its toll on families and we thank Kerin, Kerin Jack and Kegan for sharing their Husband and Dad with the Police over the past twenty years. Dave is leaving behind a big set of boots for his replacement to fill!

Both Tony and I sincerely thank Dave for his friendship and comradeship over the years. We both, along with our colleagues in the Selwyn and wider Canterbury Police. wish Dave and his family all the very best for the future.

Dave has been in Darfield twelve years and is well known to many both professionally and personally.

Dave has been a hard working, loyal, honest and at all times professional employee of Police. Dave’s local knowledge will be sorely missed. He knows almost everyone and has a huge wealth of knowledge of the area and issues within the area.

Dave is very highly thought of by his peers and management within Police and has developed a diverse range of skills over his years of service.

I will miss Dave a lot. He is a heck of a great guy and has made a fantastic contribution through his service.

I am really pleased that Dave will remain living in Malvern and won’t be lost to the district. Wishing him all the very best in his future endeavours.

When Totalspan established a charitable trust for their ‘Undercover Kids’ bus shelter programme back in 2008, it would have been difficult to assess just how popular it would become. ‘Undercover Kids’ aims to provide bus shelters to protect children as they wait for buses on rural school routes, as well as to reduce the risk to the youngsters. Often ‘stops’ are no more than a slightly wider section of roadside with no protection from the weather.

They are repeatedly the scenes of multiple vehicles pulling up to offload students, who may live several kilometres from the stop.

Government organisations and local Councils were briefed as part of the bus shelter process and everyone and in particular the New Zealand Transport Agency [formerly Transit] were extremely obliging in ensuring that the programme meets all the legal and regulatory requirements. Total Span has recently built a bus shelter for

the Springfield children that attend Darfield High School.

Located at the west end of Tramway Road, it’s certainly getting a lot of appreciated use.

The Springfield Township Committee were glad of the assistance given by Selwyn District Council to identify the most appropriate site and sincerely thank Totalspan for providing and installing the shelter. There were numerous local contractors and

businesses also involved and they gave of their time and services freely - all of which the Township committee were extremely grateful for.

“It is a great asset for the high school youngsters providing them with a safe dry place to get out of the worst of the elements whilst waiting for the bus,” commented a spokesperson for the Springfield Township committee.

Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade has been working behind the scenes over the last six months, as they look at the potential of offering a youth based Brigade Cadet programme to Malvern children.

As part of their investigations into the viability of the project, the Brigade has run a short, six week, Cadet Pilot Programme during term four that was open to Darfield High School students.

school were selected, after registering their interest, to assist with the pilot. The group have spent two hours on Friday evenings learning a number of skills used by the Fire Brigade including; first aid, communication, hose running and waterway, to name but a few.

Alongside these enthusiastic Cadets have been a group of dedicated Darfield Firefighters, who volunteered their time to work with them and pass on their knowledge and skills. The Cadets were addressed by a member of the Darfield St John crew for their first aid module.

The Programme concluded at the Darfield Fire Station on Friday, December 1st, with the Cadets showcasing some of the skills they had learnt during the pilot.

The event, which was well attended by parents of Cadets and Firefighters from the Brigade was a spectacular display of the Cadets’ waterway skills. Onlookers were impressed at not only the group’s hose skills, but also their seamless team work and the ability to make it look so easy.

“It was an impressive display and to think that they learnt all of that in such a short period of time,” enthused parent Ed Stott.

Stott “We are extremely pleased that we had the opportunity to enrol our son in this experience.”

The display was followed by a presentation of certificates to acknowledge the Cadets, their hard work and the commitment they offered in the form of feedback, which will be used to

shape the future of the programme.

“What an exciting opportunity for the youth in the Darfield area, and what a resource the Fire Brigade is offering to the community. We hope that the community gets behind this venture and supports the organisers to ensure this continues into the future,” Thekla Barnhill, Barnhill grandmother of one of the Cadets, added.

Pilot Programme Coordinator Stephan Williamson said the pilot had been very successful, and the Brigade will now aim to establish a full Fire Brigade Cadet programme in 2018.

The Brigade extend their thanks to the Cadets and their parents, without whom the pilot would not have gone ahead.

Darfield St John Youth division held their annual divisional awards evening on Wednesday, November 29th at the Darfield High School Hall. Hannah Ireland, Ireland one of the Division’s Gold Cadets and also trainee leader, put in a lot of hard work to organise the formal event as part of her cadet leader training.

Lynda Walter, Walter Darfield Divisional Manager said, “she exceeded my expectations and the whole event was well run, on time and flowed very well.”

The evening was well attended by parents and members of the community, as well as St John representatives from outside the area, including Paula Rose, Rose Warren Dobbs, Dobbs Jo Hodgkinson and Tony Blaber, Blaber all of whom took part in celebrating the cadets’ success.

All of the cadets were recognised throughout the evening for their hard work over the last six months with certificates and badges given out for work completed in their badge subjects, with some cadets walking away with four or more badges to add to their brassard.

There was also the opportunity to celebrate successes at regional competitions, where eight cadets received a huge array of certificates recognising their outstanding results. The regional competition awards recognised Darfield as the aggregate intermediate team of the South Island, the senior team getting second place and also recognised the three individual competitors, of which two were placed in the top

What was once a damp, slipprone, gully on Hororata farmer Tony Edwards’ property is being transformed with the planting of thousands of native trees and shrubs, improving water quality and creating a haven for birds.

Tony and his wife Mary are semi -retired and live in a newish home on 80 hectares of hill country west of Hororata.

Behind the house, Tony has planted a bank in natives but commented that he had real trouble getting them established, until a friend suggested he contact Selwyn District Council’s Kristina Townshend.

She told him that helping landscape the garden was outside her brief, but she did see other potential on the farm.

“She saw the pond and the area down below the house and said, ‘what we are about is planting out waterways, fencing and establishing green dots’,” recalled Tony.

The ‘Green Dot’ project is an attempt to identify and establish a corridor of plantings and build community awareness of Plains biodiversity. The idea is to establish ‘dots’, about five kilometres apart, within easy flight distance for birds, from the mountains to the sea.

The project is managed by Te Ara Kākāriki (the Greenway Ca nt erb ury T ru st ), a nd supporters include Environment Canterbury, Ministry for the Environment, Selwyn District Council and Ngai Tahu.

“She said she could organise

somebody to come and work out some species, organise the purchase of them, funding for it and 200 people to come out and plant them,” Tony commented.

“It was just a gully with a stream in it so I bought into it and then it was basically year after year with me doing back up and them assessing each year whether I was worthy for more planting and funding.”

Part of the cost of fencing was covered by an $8,000 grant from Environment Canterbury’s Immediate Steps biodiversity fund, topped up by the Edwards.

Even with all the assistance, the project requires considerable input from Tony. He was responsible for spraying the gully to get rid of grass and

weeds before planting, as well as follow up spray, and generally looking after the plants.

“Without that, they’d all be smothered in cocksfoot. Te Ara Kākāriki liked what I was doing and they liked the environment that was happening and were really excited about it all; and to be honest I became excited about it too,” Tony added.

“I did feel there was an invasion coming when I signed on the bottom line first up, but gee, it may not look all that much to you, but to me this is just incredible,” Tony said, as he walked among flaxes, kowhais and other native species in what previously was a damp farm gully grazed by livestock.

Year 6 pupils at Greendale Primary School are encouraged to ‘bring an idea to life’ in their final year at Primary level.

‘They really can make a difference and leave their legacy at Greendale,’ a School spokesperson reported. “In 2018 one student led ‘fundraising for a spring free trampoline’ and now we have one! A ‘wheels day’ was another initiative and now we have ramps for skateboards, scooters and trike users. ‘Dress up days’ have been held, and some Year 6 students have led the charge of ‘Wrap free Lunches’ promoting fabric lunch wraps and reusable containers to eliminate plastic rubbish.”

On November 28th, in the Greendale Community Hall, the first Malvern Spelling Bee was hosted by Greendale Primary School - initiated by Year 6 student, Olivia Adams.

Adams Olivia was keen to organise a Malvern event that wasn’t ‘Sporting’!

The Spelling Bee involved a large number of difficult words for the pupils from the seven schools participating (Greendale, Hororata, Springfield, Glentunnel and Darfield Primary). Teachers at these schools picked the best spellers from years 5 and 6 and they were put into teams of four. Schools could enter one or two teams. The spelling bee was a huge success but teachers

were heard to say that there was still room for spelling improvement.

“A big thank you to the parents and teachers that transported

Selwyn District Council has launched a new resource to help children and families make sure they’re prepared for emergencies.

The Council has developed an emergency preparedness booklet which teaches children about what to do in an emergency and encourages households to make their own emergency preparedness plans.

Community Resilience Coordinator Sue Jenkins said the book has been well-received at Lincoln Primary School, where the booklets were recently presented to 160 Year 5 and 6 students.

“Students enjoyed visiting the Emergency Command Bus and meeting ‘Stan’, the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency

Management (MCDEM) mascot,” she said.

“We hope to visit more Selwyn primary schools in 2018. We are encouraging principals to make time in the busy school day to have an interactive session to discuss emergency preparedness and distribute copies of the What’s the Plan Stan booklet.”

The booklet is filled with fun, informative activities for children to complete relating to different scenarios. These are worked through using the six IMPACT characters (Izzy, Mika, Paul, Ashley, Carter, and Tamati) created by MCDEM. When each activity is completed, the ‘What’s the Plan Stan’ sticker can be added to the page indicated by Stan,

the children and checked the answers and to the organisers for making the day work,” concluded the Greendale School spokesperson.

Gets Ready is used to share emergency warnings and alerts via text and email. Over 7,000 Selwyn households are already signed up.

If you are staying home and have some spare time it's an opportunity to do a bit of basic pest control maintenance. To protect your home before the coming rodent season: • Clear any overgrown plants from house walls (rodents love cover). On my own home I have no planting near my walls at all.

• Trim all tree branches back at least a metre from rooves.

• Fit metal mesh to all weep holes in brick work top and bottom. If you can fit the thick end of a Biro in the gap, a mouse can go through it (don't block the holes of air, and water must be able to pass through these holes).

• Any other holes around pipe work and around garage doors especially at the bottom of the reveals should be permanently blocked off ie sand and cement .

• Another thing we notice when treating homes is the number of houses with grass growing in the spouting. This is trouble waiting to happen and Christmas time is a good time to clean out this spouting.

On Monday, November 27th, the Board held their last meeting of the year in the Lake Coleridge Hall.

Representatives from committees in Lake Coleridge and Windwhistle joined the Board and raised a number of topics which concerned them. These included points of clarification on the proposed new Cemetery Bylaw, roading, increasing quad bike use causing damage, and broom to be removed, particularly in the cemetery.

The Council’s Environmental Services Manager briefed the Board on a range of topics, noting that the Council will soon commence a review of its Gambling Venue Policy. As soon as the draft policy has been prepared there will be public notice of the proposal followed by a formal consultation process.

Board Members discussed the 120th Anniversary Commemoration of the birth of Rewi Alley which was celebrated over the past weekend and approved a grant to the Selwyn Sister City Committee to assist with related costs.

The Board would like to thank all its community committees for their hard work during the past year and wishes everyone a safe and pleasant Christmas break.
