Competing for New Zealand in the Under 17 Mounted Games team, Kirwee’s Leah Zydenbos has just seen her team named as the World Champions. This followed an outstanding competition held at the Auckland Showgrounds, from November 23rd to 26th and attended by teams from eight countries. Mounted Games is a fast paced, action packed discipline with riders and mounts needing to display an incredible amount of fitness, training and skill. In this equestrian sport of extremely fast games people of all ages can compete, on ponies up to a height of 15 hands (152 cm). Not only must riders be athletic
and strong, but they must also be possessed of wonderful horsemanship skills and great hand to eye coordination. Their ponies are required to be nimble, fast, strong and brave, but most of all must have a great brain! The New Zealand Mounted Games Association (NZMGA) is an affiliate of the International Organisation, of which there are twenty member countries from all over the world. Competitions are run in age groups ranging from the Under 12 year old ‘minis’ to the veterans at 35 years and over. Mounted Games were the
