For Courtenay A & P Association Secretary Sharon Kellock, Kellock Show day tends to be all a bit of a blur. Spent closeted in the office Sharon collates and organises everything administrative that comes up on the day and irons out the inevitable glitches when they occur. Sharon has been Secretary/Administrator of the Courtenay A & P Association for four years, taking over from Adrienne Begg, Begg who had held the role since 1982.

“Another Show is over, and we hope that everyone who participated had a good time,” Sharon commented. “We were blessed with perfect weather in Kirwee on Saturday, and numbers through the gate were consistent with other years.

Entries this year totalled well over 3,000, which is a record for recent years.

“Running an A & P Show is a massive undertaking and is very much a team effort. It starts with the AGM in April, after which sub-committees sit down and review the schedule of classes. By August, the schedule has been printed and sent out to members and previous year’s entrants, along with being available from selected local businesses. The tasks required begin to build; contacting sponsors, inviting judges and stewards, organising trade sites, entertainment, printing, children’s competition, collecting subscriptions, plus taking thousands of entries and dealing with payments - it all adds to the work-load,” Sharon said. “By October things are flat-out.

Ultimate Frisbee was a new sport to Darfield High School (DHS) this year and the students have already embraced it as a fun and competitive pastime, as well as showing a passion and talent for the discipline.

The sport is generally played on a seventy by fifty metre field with seven players on each team.

The goal of the game is to get the Frisbee into the opposition's end zone to score a point. The game normally runs until there are fifteen points scored, or alternatively the game’s time is capped between seventy-five and ninety minutes. School competitions however, are played on a smaller field of fifty by twenty metres, with five players in a team, and the games are only forty-five minutes long.

The focus is on the ‘spirit’ of the game, which means there is no referee, so it important that the players know the rules, use them appropriately, and be good sportspersons.

This year DHS students have been competing in terms one and four on a Wednesday as part of a school Ultimate Frisbee league in Christchurch. The school has been sending four teams in to the competition; Year 10 boys, Year 10 girls social and two mixed Year 9 teams.

Darfield High School teams recently competed in the inaugural South Island Secondary Schools’ Ultimate Frisbee Championship which was held on November 5th at Centennial Park in Christchurch.

The School was represented by two teams; both did well for their first year with the Year 10 team placing second. Although the Year 9 team came in at

sixth, they won the Spirit award, which was an outstanding effort.

Stef McKenzie, did the School proud and was selected as Most Valuable Female Player of the tournament.

The DHS school team contains numerous talented players including Ben Francis, Francis Jesse Gray, Jesse Sutherland and Nik Hodgman who were all selected for the Canterbury team. These

players competed at the New Zealand Secondary School Championships earlier this year.

The team is coached and managed by Baillie Graham, Graham who is also a member of the New Zealand Ultimate Frisbee Women's Champion Team. She has worked hard with the players throughout the year and this has assisted them achieve success.

The first of the new Darfield High School classrooms have been handed over to the School, and this has brought some changes to the School landscape.

The addition of the modern structure has meant that year 7 classes have been relocated to the new building. Now referred to as ‘J’ block students have been busy settling in, and it has been reported that everyone is

enjoying the new space.

The new classroom (stage one) is part of a two stage building project underway at the School.

Stage two is due for completion in March 2018.

Another change to the landscape is the removal of the E6-10 relocatable classrooms.

These have been vacated and removed to make way for stage two and the second fourclassroom building.

Soapbox racing has become something of big deal for Greendale School pupil, six year old Isaac Budd who recently attended the ‘TiMOru’ Soapbox Derby in Timaru, with his codriver dad, Joe Budd.

Budd In his sleek black and white, creatively designed kart, it was no surprise that he proudly brought home the second place title in his age bracket.

The event, which was first run in the 70’s and 80’s made a return this year after a group of enthusiasts spent two years planning the event’s relaunch.

Organisers, fundraising group TiMOru (set up in 2011 - is group of mates doing their bit for Men’s Health and Movember) set themselves two main objectives; one to bring back the fun and excitement of soapbox racing and the other to

promote and fundraise for men’s health through ‘Movember’ (an annual fundraising event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to highlight men’s health). They planned to get work mates, team mates, friends, fathers and sons involved collectively in a fun project to encourage conversation.

Building the kart has provided a wealth of quality of time for Joe, Isaac and Austin (Isaac’s younger brother) as they have worked alongside a family friend who was the welder for the project.

Isaac had his own special jobs in the build, including some enjoyable time with supervised power tool use and the boys had a scrapbook to draw pictures of what they wanted as

a design. Isaac, most importantly, was involved in the setting up of the seat position, handle bar height/position and visibility/protection from kart sides. He was the intended driver of the kart - so everything needed to be perfect.

Race day began with an early start for volunteers, who had to help set up the course using two truckloads of hay bales and assemble fencing. However this didn't take long and then the junior racers got to give racing a go.

The race was divided into two classes; under sixteen year old juniors, which covered school groups, community groups, father and son groups (both kit set and custom built karts); or open class, covering any age and any design.

The junior course was downhill with hay bales to navigate while the open class saw small jumps added to the course.

Isaac’s dad, Joe, reported that Isaac was extremely excited on the day, “he loved it and would have had me push him back up the hill twenty-five more times if we were allowed, he was in boy heaven, so wasn’t bothered where he placed in the race,” Joe explained.

Joe, Isaac and Austin have two spots booked for next year’s race, with the hope that Austin, who will then be five and half, will race in the cart Isaac has just competed in, with modifications. The three of them are already planning a new cart for Isaac and spending the time together to design and build it makes the whole project worthwhile they all agreed.

Malvern School of Music (MSM), based in Darfield, is starting three exciting new initiatives in 2018 including a Community Ukulele Orchestra, Composition classes and a concert transport outreach. In its thirtieth year and when reflecting on how this nonprofit organisation has changed over the years, the Committee decided to look for ideas that will enhance the founding MSM focus on children’s music lessons to include the needs of adults.

The MSM Community Ukulele Group will start up on February 12th, 2018. The sessions will be held on Mondays in a Community room at the Darfield Library, and the group is targeted at adults of any age to learn chords, TAB and songs from a variety of eras and styles. It will be a chance to make music, friends and have fun playing the ukulele! The first

lesson is free and help will be given in choosing a ukulele to purchase, however MSM will have some ukuleles available to use.

Minibus trips to Christchurch concerts are also a proposed new initiative. Aimed at those who may have transport difficulties to a concert, or people who don’t want to go alone.

Expressions of interest are called for and organisers will assess how their idea evolves.

Another new offering in 2018 is Composition. The tuition for this will be according to the students’ needs; song writing, composing for instruments, c re a t in g m u s ic u s in g technology, or help with the composition section for music theory exam students. The ability to read music is not a prerequisite, but this is useful knowledge. The tutor, Helen Langen, Langen has a Bachelor of Music majoring in Composition

and has arranged/composed music for several MSM concerts.

In 2018 MSM will offer tuition in; piano, keyboard, singing, violin, viola, cello, recorder, flute (if numbers allow), clarinet, saxophone, guitar, ukulele, drums, theory and composition. Malvern School of Music currently have students five years old through to retired adults. They assure readers that any age is a good age to learn music!

MSM has a High Achievers Concert planned for December (see the advertisement in this issue), this is an annual concert where players who have sat an instrumental exam play their exam pieces.

Anyone is welcome to attend.

Selwyn District Council, Police and licenced premises across the district are participating in the annual Christmas/New Year drink drive campaign, encouraging everyone to sort a safe ride home before going out for a few drinks.

As part of the campaign, posters, coasters and bar mats are being distributed to hotels, taverns, sport clubs and other licenced premises in Selwyn.

Selwyn District Council Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commended the work done by local hotels and taverns to keep patrons safe.

“Each year as part of our road safety campaign, we distribute free resources to licenced premises to encourage and support their host responsibility activities and we appreciate them coming on board with our promotion,” she said.

Drink driving increases the risk

of road users being injured or killed in a road crash that could have been avoided.

There were over 150 crashes in the Selwyn district between 2012 and 2016 where alcohol was involved, resulting in eight fatalities and forty serious injuries. Minor crashes also resulted in people receiving injuries, as well as damage to vehicles and properties.

Research indicates that in many cases when drivers are affected by alcohol, excessive speed and failure to wear a safety belt also contribute to the severity of the crash. Not surprisingly, these types of crashes typically occur between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

This year’s road safety campaign encourages drivers to think about sorting their ride home before going out, so they can avoid the risks involved in driving after consuming alcohol.

Safe options include organising

a sober driver or using a courtesy van. Friends should be discouraged from driving if they have been drinking.

Police Senior Sergeant Pete Stills encourages everyone drinking alcohol when socialising to take advantage of the services offered by local businesses.

“Many responsible premises across the district offer courtesy vans and we recommend everyone to use these if they have not organised other safe means to get home,” Pete commented.

Although many people believe drink drivers are less likely to be stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads, this is not the case. Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on all Selwyn roads over the Christmas/New Year holiday season. The booze bus will be deployed in both rural and urban areas.

Recently schools and community groups in the Selwyn district h ave r ec e ive d pu mp k in seedlings as part of ‘The People’s Pumpkin Project’, led

by Environment Canterbury.

There were also a number of high profile community members from the Canterbury region who were invited by Allen Lim, Lim Chair of the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee, and Sam Broughton, Broughton Mayor of Selwyn District, to be a part of the project.

The pumpkin seedlings, which the Council propagated especially for the project, and growing instructions were

delivered to local community groups at Canterbury Show Weekend, while the Mayor spent a good part of his day on November, 20th hand delivering the pumpkin seedlings to all local primary and secondary schools in the area.

The community-focussed project was designed to challenge participants across the urban and rural sectors to grow a pumpkin from a seedling in a friendly competition with each other.

The Mayor hopes that the project will also generate

Our October visit to French Farm was cancelled due to bad weather and was rescheduled for November, however before we did that visit we visited Hororata to view local gardens. The garden of Annabel Freeman, was our first stop and showed what a strong vision for landscape and design can do in a garden. The whole garden was stunning and a revisit in a few years +me would be very interes+ng to see the changes and growth. The garden of Helen Stewart was far more established, with spring flowers figh+ng for space in a lovely co7age style garden, full of colour and texture.

We finished off our tour of Hororata with the garden of Prue Thorne, which is immaculately maintained and a delight to the senses with the colours and layout.

Now on to our trip to French Farm. If you are a gardener you would think you had died and gone to Heaven!

What a feast for the eyes this garden is, from the perennial borders in the upper garden full of colour to the bush area where winding paths took you wandering through huge stands of na+ve trees to streams, ponds, a Macrocarpa house, yes just like a li7le house to huge swathes of na+ves. There were overseas visitors touring the garden at the same +me as the Garden Club and to say they were impressed was an under-statement. “This project aims to encourage urban and rural stakeholders to take another step towards building trust and working together, in an effort to solve the water quality issues in the region. It is our hope that this activity will provide opportunities to discuss these sensitive issues in an informal setting,” the Chair of the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee explained.

As part of the project, schools have been offered the opportunity to win $500, which is for the school who grows the largest pumpkin, and there is also $500 available for the school whose student presents the best A3 poster about water and nutrient management for growing the pumpkin. The prize money for the competition has come courtesy of the Selwyn District Council, along with donations from organisations and individuals. The posters need to be completed by students in term one, 2018 and sent to the Mayor for judging, while the pumpkin weigh-in will take place at the end of term one.

Sam has also planted his own pumpkin seedling and is really looking forward to seeing how it grows. He plans to be in touch with schools during Term one to see how they are all going.

“Entries close three weeks before the Show to allow for preparation and printing of the catalogue, and bringing together the loose ends. The final week is a mad rush, getting the grounds up to scratch with two, full day, working bees, and we take last minute entries in

the fruit, vegetable and flower sections.

“Many A & P Shows use public facilities, but the Courtenay A & P Association are fortunate to own their own Grounds and Hall at Kirwee. This means working bees throughout the year, and a lot of hard work from Grounds -man Stuart Begg and the Hall

The winner of the Matson & Allan Real Estate Outstanding Young Achievers Award at Saturday’s Courtenay A & P Show was Rebecca Legat.

Legat Chris Flanagan of Matson & Allan had great pleasure in announcing the winner and presenting Rebecca with the award in the main ring following the Grand Parade.

Young Achiever Rebecca, has worked in the Horse Industry for approximately six years and started her own horse riding school, Springmount Riding on Torlesse Road, West Melton.

Rebecca has leased the land to run her business and provides professional and educational horse riding lessons and also covers all aspects of not just riding, but also caring for, horses.

She has taken riders from three years old to seventy years old and hosts camps to build their confidence to ride. Rebecca has experienced a few curved balls in her lifetime, and suffered severe injuries, however she still remains incredibly positive and has a great outlook on life while maintaining the riding school she has created, along with managing staff. Additionally Rebecca is the Chairperson of the West Melton Young Farmers Club and has been the driving force behind the resurgence of the Club. She is described as passionate, driven and a ‘make it happen’ person. Over the past year, under her guidance, Rebecca has taken the Club from just two financial members to twelve financial members. This, along with the first Gumboot trophy win in around ten years, plus an increasing community profile, shows the West Melton Young Farmers Club is now a very active and competitive organisation. She is also the Treasurer of the West Melton Rifle Club. Rebecca is community driven and passionate about all that she achieves; she has a career plan and goal to purchase her own farm and area for her riding school in the future.

However the Committee step up, think of solutions rather than problems, pull together, Show Secretary - Sharon Kellock. and that is the key to a successful Show,” Sharon stressed. “This year we lost power in the Hall while judging was underway, and thanks to two local electricians; Brian Rowe and Rob Kellock, Kellock the problem was fixed on the spot, and the Hall was able to be opened to the public only half an hour later than usual.

A group of Hororata School students watch as the school calves are loaded and made ready to take away to the Saleyards.

At 9am on Tuesday, November 21st an excited group of adults and Hororata Primary School, Year 6 students (Charlie Charlie, Charlie George, George Joe, Joe Cameron, Cameron Simon, Simon William, William Holly, Holly Kiana and Livi) Livi set off to the Canterbury Park Saleyards to see what the commercial outcome was after the School’s calf rearing enterprise.

The group arrived as the prime cattle were being sold before going out to the back pens to view their calves.

“They were penned amongst all the big stock, but we’re sure they were happy to see us,” reported a School spokesperson. “We then went out to the sheep pens to watch how they were selling, and made sure we stopped and said hello to Fred Fowler our exHororata Agent who still visits for the local Church auction.”

The group settled themselves into the seating area to await the sale of their calves. As time passed it looked as if it would be a long wait until thankfully, a parent spoke with the auctioneer and the children were happy to see their lot brought forward.

“The regular ‘locals’ of Canterbury Park were fascinated by our group and

asked many questions re the rearing etc. “Next thing you will tell me they have all got names they joked”. Indeed yes was the reply and we proceeded to tell them these starting with…All Black, Reid, Barrett Boys, McCaw etc.”

At last the calves came into the ring accompanied by applause from the Hororata group, who then settled down to view what took place next.

With the auction underway and the secret under-bidder removing himself from the group, the Hororata students and supporters waited with bated breath for the outcome of the sale. The calves average weight came in at 126 kilograms and they were sold for $500, which was possibly the top price per kilogram on the day, something that was met with more enthusiastic applause.

“It was the best day ever,” George proclaimed. “The bulls kept us well entertained with their antics behind the boards in the ring,” he added.

The School said an enormous thankyou to parent Craig Blackburn who initiated this Discovery Learning Programme (as well as for his secret bidding skills too).

“We’d also like to thank the PGG/W Auctioneer on the day who not only managed to reshuffle the programme from that in the catalogue, but conducted the auction with panache, flair and lots of amusement,” they added.

“Parents and students give a huge thank you to all the programme’s sponsors and service providers, as well as all the wonderful helpers who assisted. It was a busy fifteen weeks rearing the calves, but on reflection we will miss seeing them in the paddock,” they concluded.

Selwyn residents with a bright idea about getting something done in their community could be in line for Mayoral support.

Mayor Sam Broughton, Broughton is offering a $500 boost to residents who are looking to accelerate their community project.

The Mayor said the Council is constantly working on great community-driven projects and this initiative is a way for Selwyn people to deliver something of their own.

“We are working on so many amazing community projects, but this is an opportunity to make a particular local initiative happen. I want to empower people to make a positive impact in their communities,” he said.

Proposed projects must benefit Selwyn communities and be able to be delivered for under $500 by the applicant and their friends. Recipients will be chosen by a panel including the Mayor.

On Thursday, November 23rd, five Hororata School pupils attended the annual Synlait Pet Championship Day at Canterbury Park.

They, along with students from other Canterbury primary schools, were given the opportunity to attend the event and to compete in livestock judging, similar to that they would experience at an A & P Show.

To qualify for the championships, entrants had to have attended a school pet day within their region.

Dustin Rowlands and his lamb were Reserve Champions for the day, with Sam Smith second (after Champion and Reserve) with his points, while Dustin's sister Mackenzie Rowlands also won a second prize ribbon.

Holly Smith entered her lamb in the senior section and won a ribbon for her efforts, likewise sister Jessie Smith went on to win a ribbon with her beef calf and for her amazing project.

The children all thoroughly enjoyed the day and are looking forward to next year, when they can enter again.

Southfuels is a New Zealand Bulk Fuel supplier, whose unique Fuel for Schools programme, is a simple and easy way in which locals are able to give back to schools in their communities. Southfuels have already distributed $700,000 to schools throughout New Zealand in the last eight years, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

Over the last few weeks five local schools each received a $1,000 Sports or Technology package all thanks to this programme. Springfield and Windwhistle Schools opted for new Chromebooks for their classrooms, while, Ellesmere College, Sheffield and Springfield Schools all added to their sports’ equipment with either Hockey or Basketball Gear. One even added a Ki O Rahi Set (Traditional Māori

Game) which the students were thrilled about.

This was all made possible thanks to the Schools’ local communities who purchase their bulk fuel from Southfuels and opt to be part of the Fuel for Schools. The programme is very simple; for every 100 litres of bulk fuel that is delivered by Southfuels, 50 cents is given back to the customer’s nominated school. The balance accrues and once it reaches $1,000 the schools can redeem their reward from the over forty packages on offer.

Fuel for School Coordinator, Alanna Taylor said, “the programme was developed as a way for us to support and give back, to the predominantly rural communities in which we operate. We couldn’t reward so many without the wonderful support from those supporting us. On average we are presenting thirty packages nationwide every three months and the joy and appreciation received from both the students and teachers when presented, brings a real sense of pride to us all.”
