Local members of St John in Darfield, Lynda Walter and Ross Meder, Meder were honoured at a ceremony held in St Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin last weekend and followed by a reception in the Dunedin Town Hall.

Lynda and Ross were both invested as Member of St John by her Excellency the Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, Reddy Governor General, and Prior of St John in New Zealand.

The honours are sanctioned by The Queen, Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of St John and presented in New Zealand by the Governor General. St John has its own honours’ system, and this is equivalent to the New Zealand

Cricket has always been in his blood for local youth, sixteen year old Jesse Frew, Frew so it is of no real surprise that he was recently selected to play for the Canterbury Under 19’s cricket team this season.

Jesse’s Dad Rob Frew played for Canterbury in the 2000/01 Season and was described as a “middle order batsman with a good Club record. Possessed of an ability to slot into several batting positions as and when required and gives 100% effort. A good committed fielder with strong arm.”

Jesse’s mum Lisa Astle also has a sterling cricketing background, having played for both the Canterbury and New Zealand Women’s teams, as well as being the sister to exBlack Cap Nathan Astle.

Astle After watching his Dad from the sideline for a few years, Jesse began playing cricket from the early age of four and he continued playing junior cricket for the Darfield Cricket Club before going on, at year 9, to play for the Selwyn Districts’ team (boys predominantly from Darfield High School).

Twelve years after he started, his passion for the sport has not waned and Jesse now plays as an all-rounder for most of the teams he’s in.

As a member of the Canterbury under 19 team he is kept busy, with two Sunday warm up games versus Christchurch Metro and Canterbury Country selections. There will also be the National Tournament at Lincoln University from December, 4th through to 12th, that Jesse and his fellow team mates will also be attending.

As well as playing for the Under

19’s Jesse also plays for his school (St Andrew’s College) first XI team, and the Canterbury Country Under 17’s.

Locally, if he has a chance he will play for the Greendale senior team, this only happens nowadays when he has a spare Saturday from his school team.

At this time of the year Jesse has a full schedule with games on both Saturday and Sunday, then there is all the training involved for each team. This includes currently training three nights a week for School, with Canterbury Country U17 on a Wednesday and Canterbury U19 trainings after the school ones.

Jesse’s Dad Rob, “a normal Friday night will include a bat in the Darfield nets.”

Jesse, has the full support of his family, with Mum, Lisa generally playing the role of taxi driver.

“He always has a family member at his games, more so Lisa at present, with me helping out with Jordy’s various teams (Jordy is Jesse’s younger brother),” explained Rob. When asked what Jesse’s future plans were for his cricket, Rob’s reply was, “he has hopes and dreams, however we are teaching him not to look too far ahead and that enjoying the now is important.”

Local Darfield woman, Jackie Hill was recently presented with the prestigious Show Legend award at the 155th Canterbury A & P Show for her contribution and dedication to the Horse and Pony Section. Jackie began riding at the age of ten years, then entered her first show as a twelve year old on her pony. Over the ensuing years she went on to compete in a range of classes. Since 1997, Jackie has assisted in the Horse and Pony Section organising the programme, as well as sorting out sponsorship and awards as a member of the Horse Committee. It was reported that Jackie was absolutely overwhelmed by the win.

Selwyn Gallery is currently presenting their Summer Collection from its Artist Members and the exhibition will showcase all mediums of art.

On show will be artworks by Philip Beadle, Beadle Cathie Bell, Bell Mike Clarke, Clarke Karl Ridgen, Ridgen John Bromley, Bromley Ann Wilson, Wilson Neil Hey, Hey Melanie Drewery and Roger Chaplin, along with Carol Bromley’s beautiful fabric doorstops. There will also be teapots, scarves, ceramics, jewellery and wood carvings, as well as regular members’ works

With works for sale in this current exhibition are: Tori Batt - an artist who lives in Le Bons Bay, Banks Peninsula.

Whilst focussing on drawing as her principle art form, the works for this show are acrylic. She recently exhibited her work at the Ashburton Arts Exhibition and won the Trustpower Water and nature award.

Claire Wratten - Claire has been drawing all of her life. She lives in Lincoln and works in all mediums and subjects, from landscapes and historic buildings in England to the changing world of the South Pacific where she lives now.

Roy Sargent - Roy lives in England and has family in the Selwyn district. His works have been shown as an artist member at the Selwyn Gallery over many years; his works for this Show are solar etchings.

The service saw honours conferred on about 35 members of St John from throughout New Zealand. Other Selwyn, or ex-Selwyn, people honoured were John (Commander) and Karen Sunckell (Officer) of Leeston, and ex-Darfield member Karyn Coker (Weir Weir) Weir and Dan Ohs of Rolleston. They were supported by highly ranked members from throughout New Zealand who had travell ed for the investiture.

“Dunedin also celebrated 125 years of St John on the same weekend, at other functions,” Ross and Lynda commented. "It was a great weekend, and while it recognised the individual members for their contribution to the work of St John, it also acknowledged the contribution made by families and employers that has allowed both of us to satisfy our passion for working in our community.”

Lynda and Ross are both true volunteers within St John. The time commitment is huge and both give their time easily to support St John locally.

Lynda has been the driving force behind establishing a thriving and high achieving Youth Division in Malvern, and Ross has been active as an Ambulance Officer providing support for the increasing number of sick people across the county and beyond. Both have served on the local area committee with other roles in Event cover, building project and acting selflessly for the community.

Both Lynda and Ross thoroughly enjoyed the ceremonies and social events associated with the investiture, a train trip around parts of the Otago peninsular, the very formal Investiture ceremony which was an emotional affair for postulants and supporters alike, and then the civic function to follow. A Scottish touch of being piped onto the train, as well as into the civic function added to the events’ appeal.

With family present it was a very fitting way to recognise their ‘sacrifice’ of allowing their partner/parent to follow their passion. New friendships were made, and all were there for a common purpose.

Twelve young New Zealanders, aged 14-18 years, have been selected to take part in the Ministerial Youth Advisory Group, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced last week and named amongst them was Darfield’s Kate Morris.

Morris The Youth Advisory Group has been set up to enable young people to have their say and have more influence on the education system and issues that affect them.

“I am looking forward to working with this inspiring group of young people, hearing about their experiences of our education system, and how they think we can improve it,” Chris said.

“I want our young people to have a say in the way our education system works and the Youth Advisory Group provides an exciting opportunity for young New Zealanders to get involved in the decisionmaking.”

“I expect this diverse group of young people will bring fresh perspectives and valuable insights about education - they

will also make sure that we are aware of the most important issues they are facing,” he added.

“The youth advisory group will decide what they want to talk about at each meeting. I imagine topics will include things like student wellbeing, mental health, and preparing for careers,” Chris commented.

The short list for the Group was determined by: biography or video clip identifying why applicants would like to be part of the Group; a character reference, and the diversity of the entire Group. The tenure of the membership will initially be one year and will be reviewed at that time. The Ministry of Education has agreed to provide all resourcing to support the activities as the secretariat of the panel including: expertise support, members’ travel cost, catering and accommodation, providing a youth facilitator, and reporting both to the Minister of Education and relevant Ministry gro up s/ ed uc at io n sec tor agencies.

The Darfield Plunket Rooms in Jackson Street, were re-opened on Sunday, November 19th after extensive renovations.

Those who attended enjoyed a warm sunny afternoon on the newly built deck. Ainsley Bell, Bell President of Darfield Plunket welcomed everyone and acknowledged all the hard work of the volunteers involved, as well as thanking the community who made this dream a reality.

“I’d like to make particular mention of the Malvern Lions who were a major sponsor,” Ainsley said, “and they are here today to present another cheque to our group (final proceeds from the annual fundraising golf tournament).

Mayor Sam Broughton spoke at the event about the importance of the Plunket service in communities and the role it plays in supporting and bringing together families. Plunket CEO Amanda Malu flew from Wellington to officially open the rooms by cutting both the ribbon and the celebratory cake.

“Everyone enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and were able to take a a walk through the newly renovated Rooms,” Ainsley added. “A big thank you to Val McKenzie and Melissa George for supplying the impressive cakes for the occasion.”

For the past four years Pam Duncan has organised Christmas shopping at the Selwyn Gallery. A steady flow of interested people attended the MenzShed Darfield/Malvern open day last weekend which was the first public function of the newly formed association. It was an opportunity to discuss the activities of the group and view the building which will be the base for it during the next two years. With the support of Evan Frew the association has a two year lease on a McLaughlins Road shed and members of the association are assisting with the fit-out of the building. The Chair of the Establishment Committee, Cliff H atton welcomed the visitors; talked about the progress to date; and plans for the future. It is expected that the shed will be used at least three times during the week with a morning and afternoon session on different days, plus a Saturday session, to meet the needs of individuals.

Visitors who came and went during the morning agreed that the leased shed was an ideal base for the group with ample space and opportunity to place machinery and store equipment for use in both personal and community based projects. Cliff talked about the opportunities

Helloworld Rolleston recently collected over 500 entries to a competition run as part of the company’s promotion at the Hororata Highland Games. Maree was the happy winner of two Air New Zealand tickets to Sydney which she and her children are already excitedly planning to use.

The National President of the New Zealand MenzShed association, Ray Hall also talked about the development of associations around the country and stressed the importance of including the wider community in the activities of the Shed.

Each Shed around the country is encouraged to develop their own capability and range of activities. They provide support and encouragement, plus hold regional and national meetings and conferences.

The Darfield/Malvern Shed has already benefitted from equipment provided by the Oxford Shed and more will be accumulated over the next few months. A meeting of the full membership will be held in the new year and it is expected that regular activities will begin at that time. Ashley Seaton has a long involvement with the Show he has now become President of.

Ash explains his past and present Show involvement; “when I was young I entered pet lambs in the Courtenay A & P Show and helped Dad at working bees. I joined the committee in 2004 starting off in the sheep section marshalling the supreme ram hogget section. Then I moved on to the role of sheep convenor (2009 until 2015) when I became junior vice president. I also organise the winterfeed competition with Guy Bassett in conjunction with the Malvern A & P Association and have done since 2008”.

The road to Show Presidency is preceded by two years ‘apprenticeship’ in the position of junior and senior vice presidents. It’s accepted that these two years are needed to get a better understanding of what is happening around the rest of the Show, as up until

then most future Presidents have been very focussed on their individual sections, which in Ash’s case was sheep.

Ash and his wife Anna have two children, five year old Georgia and two and a half year old Fergus.

Fergus They are expecting another addition to their family next month.

“I run the family farm with my brother Warwick and we finish lambs and bulls, as well as grow a variety of crops.

“Many of my interests have a far m i ng b ack gr ou nd ie reversible competition ploughing and vintage tractors.

I am also treasurer for the Courtenay Paparua Ploughing Association and helped organise New Zealand ploughing finals at home this year. However I do also enjoy spending time with my family and I believe country A & P Shows are a great family day out.”

“The rural Show plays an i mp or t a nt ro l e i n t he

community. It brings town and country together for a day-out and it’s a wonderful a chance for friends, neighbours and acquaintances to catch up. It also gives people a chance to show their exhibits and talents to the wider community, while local businesses get a chance to display their products to a more extensive audience.

“I have many memories of the Show. I don't think I have missed one in my lifetime. I have still got all the ribbons that I won with pet lambs in the cupboard somewhere,” Ash smiled.

The current Show committee are credited with doing a sterling job of their sections.

“We have a really good committee where everyone knows what they are doing and just get the jobs done,” Ash said.

As always a lot of preparation goes on behind the scenes prior to Show day.

There have been working bees to finish the seating around the ring and grounds-man Stuart Begg has been busy

maintaining the area so it is ship-shape for the day, including much mowing and the planting of some new trees.

“It’s been all hands on deck to get everything in place before Sh ow day, ” As h s a id.

“Convenors and sub-sections have to find judges marshalls and stewards for their various classes, as well as Sharon, the Show secretary, co-ordinating schedules, entries and masses

“A new feature of the Show this year is our innovative Show guide,” President Ash Seaton enthused. “This will replace our catalogue and be a considerably more user-friendly way of finding out what’s on offer on the day.”

This inaugural publication will be free to showgoers and contains a map of the grounds, a timetable of what is happening and when, as well as a fun children’s competition.

“The kids’ competition crossword,” Ash said, involves youngsters gaining their gap-filling answers by going around the Show. There are some great prizes to be won and it’s bound to be a lot of fun.

Local businesses have supported the new Show-Guide initiative by placing advertisements in it to defray the costs - something the Show committee is appreciative of.

The role of a President on Show day is largely that of support and networking. Courtenay A & P President Ash Seaton, his wife Anna and their vice Presidents are looking forward to viewing the Show as a whole, and getting to see each section of the event. They have a role to play by speaking with all the Judges and hopefully a large number of exhibitors - it’s this networking that literally ‘keeps the Show on the road’.

Judging the best exhibit and trade site is a key component of a President’s day, as is the presentation of a number of trophies and awards. Highlight of the day for many is the Grand Parade, always headed up by the current Show President and their vice Presidents - this year will be no different.

“A President really keeps an eye on everything running smoothly,” Ash said, “and with my efficient committee, I have no doubt that this will be the case.

The Courtenay A & P Show is the last show in the Selwyn area before Christmas and it is always a great day out for young and old alike.

Each year the Show has a particular theme and this year that theme is ‘Sustainable Farming’.

Ashley Seaton, Seaton the Show’s President, will have a marquee featuring displays and businesses that reflect this theme and I am sure that this will be of interest to many.

Another highlight of the Show is likely to be the District Final of the Sheepdog Trials, which I understand will be held just before the Grand Parade.

Of course, A & P Shows are traditionally all about the animals and, judging from the number of entries expected, there will be no shortage of

Becoming the new owner of the Kirwee Tavern immediately prior to the last Courtenay A & P Show night at his hostelry was a little like baptism by fire for new Publican Steve Evans.

While Pam Duncan and her stall of Christmas goodies has traded at the Courtenay Show before, this year she will again be ‘flying solo’ and without her usual stallpartner.

“My Christmas enterprise is known as ‘Happy Hands’, Pam commented. “I have had a stall at the Show for the past four years and really look forward to it each time. A & P shows have always been a big part of my life and I really get a buzz from them,” she added.

“My stall is made up of Christmas gifts, and I especially focus on Christmas stockings, advent calendars, Christmas craft trees, sweets and cakes of all sizes etc.

“This year I have added quite a few different products to my range including Santa Sacks, gift baskets and fudge.”

Pam will set up her stall on Show day morning and be on hand to assist with selection for the duration of the event - be sure to check out the amazing stock she has, in the run-up to Christmas.

Darfield Preschool and Nursery will have their child friendly tent available as usual, this year at the Courtenay A & P Show, in Kirwee.

Families are encouraged to bring their children along and experience some interactive fun activities, or even just a place to rest from the crowds.

The Preschool’s space is provided for any families needing nappy changing facilities, a place to feed their little ones, or simply to come and have a look at what the

Pedalmania has been instrumental in providing fun and entertainment at numerous venues throughout Selwyn, with this year being their second appearance at the Courtenay A & P Show.

Owner of Pedalmania, Clive Murphie will travel from his base at Stewart’s Gully to Kirwee on Show Day and envisages about a three quarter of an hour setup time to get everything ready for some quirky fun. They’ll be underway at 11:30am and the action will continue until around 2:30pm.

When asked whether the weather would impact patronage he laughingly replied, “kids will probably ride our crazy bikes in light rain, however heavy rain has been known to send most of them, and us, heading for cover!

“We’re looking forward to the

Show as everywhere we go we get lots of positive comments from both parents and children about the fun they have riding Pedalmania bikes. Sadly because we’re so busy from the time we arrive until the time we close we seldom get the opportunity of seeing what’s on offer at the event we’re attending.

“The highlight for us at these type of events is meeting lots of people,” Clive commented, “and seeing them smile and laugh as they enjoy our bikes. We especially enjoy seeing parents joining in with their kids.”

Clive’s business is booming and A & P Shows are the perfect venues to continue this trend.

“We attend lots of shows and events; in fact this year we will participate in bringing fun to approximately 110 venues.”

Peter Schnelle’s role at the Courtenay A & P Show is that of Trade Site convenor and he is well aware that these sites are showcases for the businesses that take the time to attend, as well as provide a lot of interest to the visiting public. While many of the sites are occupied by returning entrants, the theme of a particular Show (this year it’s Sustainable Farming) will often attract new applicants for sites.

Peter does have assistance on the day to ensure everyone knows where they are to set up,

sorting out requirements for food vendors and generally making everything run smoothly. Mapping of the grounds showing sites in detail is done during the week preceding the Show and if everything runs to plan, and everyone follows the plan - all should be plain sailing! Peter also arranges with vendors etc just which machinery will enter the Grand Parade and schedules times etc.

What I find is that people feel more comfortable coming up,

having a chat and asking questions about their hearing at this type of event. What stands me apart is that I am the boss, the owner/operator. So people know after they meet me at the Show, they will also see me in the Clinic.

“I think my business is extremely relevant to rural

people - especially farmers and those working with machinery or in trades. I do a lot of ACC noise-induced hearing loss claims and fit hearing aids, but also specialise in other aspects of hearing, such as tinnitus management and hearing protection, which is entirely relevant for a lot of people,” Brenna said.

“While I’m hoping for nice weather, my products will all be safely under shelter should that not be the case. I will mainly have demo hearing aids, hearing protection etc. and they will be under a gazebo!”

Meeting with Brenna at the Show is an ideal opportunity to consult with someone and to perhaps discover the answers to previously unasked queries.

This can of course be followed up by an appointment if necessary, but the Show is a great first step.

This year will be the first time that local woman Virginie Lalyman, otherwise known as Lolytwist, has performed at the Courtenay A & P Show.

Lolytwist (wonderful balloon art) has however provided lots of entertainment at various other A & P Shows and festivals, including the Canterbury A & P Show.

Virginie in her guise as Lolytwist plans on arriving at the Show around 9am to get set up before the crowds of children, that will no doubt follow her around the Show grounds, arrive.

The ability to stand out in a crowd enables her to be a roving entertainer on the day.

“Children have a way of finding me in the expansive showgrounds as they seem naturally drawn to my bright and colourful attire, complete with balloon accessories,” she added.

Virginie entertains the children while meandering around the Show grounds, stopping to engage with those that approach her and twists balloons into magnificent pieces of art at the children’s request. While her hands are busy working magic and creating stunning balloon sculptures, she entertains those by making a production

out of whole process. Children smiling and laughing is her aim, along with each child walking away happy.

When asked what the highlight of spending the day at the Show is, Lolytwist’s response is quite simple, “I enjoy entertaining the children and seeing them smile.”

For those who want to track down Lolytwist at the Show, simply look for the crowd of children bunched around a brightly dressed lady, who could possibly be wearing a quirky balloon hat, or some other item of balloon fashioned accessory.

Business owners Ashton and Gemma Smith both grew up in Selwyn and moved back four years ago to the Darfield area, where Gemma’s family live.

“We bought a property in Darfield four years ago while still residing in Queensland Australia,” Gemma explained.

“We then moved back home a year before we welcomed our second son, Reuben.

“We see agricultural shows as not only beneficial to our business, but also beneficial to the community as a whole. They definitely are a great day out for the whole family.”

Gemma and Ashton plan to bring the truck and the smaller digger to form part of their display and will set things up on Friday afternoon.

“Do come have a chat with us about any form of earthmoving or hard landscaping,” the pair commented. “We do everything from small hand dig outs and paving, to large scale earthmoving for agriculture.

For Andrew Brooker the relaxed atmosphere of the Courtenay Show is welcomed after the larger scale of the Christchurch A & P Show the week before.

“Courtenay show is popular as being one week after Christchurch it is more relaxed, as well as being a great family day out,” he commented.

Andrew is the Courtenay A & P Show’s wool convenor and added that the section generally runs smoothly and without a hitch. He and his two assistants set up the wool bins and weighin the fleeces on the Thursday prior to Show day and judging is done on the Friday. He assists the Judges, adds up score cards and generally makes sure the section functions as it should.

“The wool classes usually draw

repeat competitors,” Andrew said, “and in previous years we have had up to 130 entries.

However with not so many sheep around nowadays, we don’t attract quite so many and this year is looking at about 4050.

“The ‘Gift Fleece’ attracts quite a few entries and while there’s no prize money at stake there’s some very good sponsored prizes in the draw to be won.

“There is a lot of paperwork involved in this section,” Andrew commented, “such as working out yields and clean fleece weights etc. Everything is packed up in the wool section on Saturday afternoon and hopefully there’s also some time to look at what the Show has to offer,” he concluded.

Terrier Racing at the Courtenay Show has got to be one of the most entertaining (and often amusing) classes; certainly for spectators and owners, and probably no doubt for the dogs themselves too.

Ably organised by convenor David Topham the News presented him with some questions about how he came to be involved and he answered most with more than a touch of humour.

Take the car down early to get a good spot for lunch and entertainment later on by the ring, it also has the Terrier race prizes and Rabbit. Probably drop the kids off then as well, they are generally champing at the bit to get down to the grounds early to catch up with their mates. Next step is to get a coffee on site and go for a look around.

Yeah I do make an effort nowadays to have a good look around the Show to see what and who has exhibited. It’s great to pass comment and recognise someone that has taken time out and made an effort to exhibit at the Show I

think. It’s far too easy to say no, rather than yes to something like being an exhibitor at a Show! Maybe I’ll take on entering a batch of scones next year I think! And I really enjoy catching up with people at the booth and watching the events like shearing later on.

What is involved in getting this event organised?

The main job is to shoot a rabbit or hare the night before, simple enough normally but sometimes they can be a shocker to get. Touch wood I’ve never not got one but … always a worry. Generally on Sam and Amy Truscott’s farm, just down at Courtenay, I will pick one up, but if like last year - nothing at all! Didn’t even see one, too many sheep - not enough cattle I think Sam! Sustainable Soils, soil consultant Calvin Bracken will be available at the Showgrounds to talk to Showgoers and as the name suggests, his business fits well into the Show theme of ‘Sustainable Farming.

Calvin explained that he attends a few Canterbury A & P Shows and that this will be the second time he has held a site at the Courtenay event.

“This year’s Show President, Ashley Seaton and his family, are clients of mine and I have supported them in local community events such as this Show, the national ploughing held last March at their farm and also for several years now, have assisted with the Malvern/ Courtenay Winterfeed Competition,” Calvin said.

“Sustainable Soils was set up after my experiences, gained on our own dairy farm, which was farmed under a Biological system. I found that looking after soil health, resulted in an improvement in my stock health and production. By looking more

in depth into my soil’s mineral status and correcting the imbalances, results quickly started to show,” Calvin added.

“For too long the focus from fertiliser reps was to sell NPK, (Nitrogen(N), Phosphorus(P) and Potassium(K)) without looking at the big picture. Not enough importance was being placed on Calcium, Magnesium and trace minerals, which are all needed in a healthy robust system, along with NPK, whether it be cropping, grazing or dairy.

“A big improvement also was made when I moved away from using acidic fertilisers that are harsh on the soil biology. I found

that Guano Phosphate worked really well as it is pH positive, has no withholding period and is very low in heavy metals, such as cadmium, compared to other phosphates being used.”

Calvin stressed that he wanted to share this knowledge so farmers can get the best out of their farms.

“I am still a farmer at heart and my clients become my friends,” he said, “I treat their farm as if it were my own. I am currently in the process of adding a few new products to meet demand and will have more information on these at the Show,” Calvin concluded.

David Stott ably undertakes this role and told the News some of what the convenor’s position entails: “Since 1990, I have been de pu ty conv e no r, t he n convenor, of Produce and Home industries at the Courtenay Show, a position which my father and grandfather held before me.

Our task begins early in the year when section heads meet to organise judges and iron out any difficulties from the previous Show.

For many years, quilts have been displayed in the Home Industries section at the annual Courtenay A & P Show as part of the Sewing Section. There were originally two classes and normally two or three entries per year in total. Unfortunately quilts could not be displayed fully as there just wasn’t the room in the allocated area.

2013 saw Sharon Kellock appointed as Courtenay A & P Secretary, bringing with her new id e a s an d e nt h us i a sm, especially in the quilt section as she is a keen quilter herself.

With a sudden influx of quilts, Produce Shed Convenor David Stott was left wondering how to best display these; previously a small area had been allowed in front of the stage.

“Newly appointed Quilts’ Section Steward Bronwyn Hamilton, Hamilton of Quilts and Quilting, had an entry in that year and helped to set them up. She did such a great job that this has been her job ever since,” David smiled.

Bronwyn and Sharon have built this section up from strength to strength with 22 entries last year, seven of which were full size bed quilts. There are now five Classes including - ‘A quilt Made By A Child sixteen or under’.

“This is a new Class this year and they would like to encourage younger quilters to enter,” David said.

We usually have over 900 entries to deal with on Show day, so the well oiled machine needs to operate seamlessly.

Fortunately, marshalls and assistants from the local community willingly support our busy day.

Exhibitors present their efforts in a wide variety of sections, sewing, baking, flowers, vegetables, quilting, floral art, knitting, photography, eggs and preserves, art and wine making.

As convenor of the horse section at the Courtenay Show Dave McConchie is a busy man with a multitude of jobs to complete before the big day.

The section requires his knowledge and guidance and many helpers to make it a success.

Malvern News spoke to Jocelyn Thrower, who is assisting Dave, about what is involved in organising such a large part of the show.

As the horse classes spokesperson what is your role? Do you do any promotion to attract entries, or is it usually repeat entrants?

My role is to assist in any promotion for the horse section and make sure it is combined as a whole with the rest of the Show, I also work alongside Sharon Kellock (Show Secretary) who organises all advertising. Most of our entrants are returning competitors, or are encouraged

The Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band (EHPB) will again entertain the crowds at the Courtenay A & P Show this year. This makes it (at the very least), their 66th year of providing entertainment to the masses.

The band was originally formed after the war in, 1946. Wherever those of Scottish birth settled after emigrating from their native land, they took with them their culture, literature and music from the rich heritage that was theirs.

However the foundations for the current band were laid when a Highland Pipe Band was formed in Leeston, circa 1924. Robert Patterson was elected as president and practices were held at the Leeston Hotel which has led to many a colourful story being told about their past experiences. Unfortunately, the band hit hard times and parted ways in 1932.

A meeting in Leeston, some fourteen years later, led to the reformation of the EHPB, including members of the forming Patterson family, on the committee. They fulfilled many local engagements with just eight pipers and four drummers, and went on to have considerable success at Dominion contest levels.

The 1960’s saw troubled times for the Band with member levels dwindling. It was the efforts of the most loyal bandsmen, including the younger generations of the Patterson

family who persevered for a decade, with the Band’s reduced circumstance. Most of the more mature members of the Band have been involved since 1953 and all members, both players and administrators, have contributed to its successful history.

The Ellesmere Pipe Band of today is led by Drum Major Barry Powell and is still based in Leeston though it now has members from a range of different areas including Leeston, Rolleston, Rangiora, Christchurch and Darfield. The band has continued to evolve and operates a drumming and piping school in Rolleston which helps to grow members and maintain the future of the band.

The band’s presence is highly sought after at many events in the Selwyn District and over the last couple of years they have attended both the Ellesmere and Malvern A & P Shows too. They also feature in a variety of Selwyn District parades and

Andrea Gibbs, Gibbs the business owner, plans to arrive at the Kirwee venue towing her custom trailer at around 7am, as her display takes about half an hour to set-up and she wants to be ready to welcome Show earlybirds.

While Andrea hopes the weather will be kind; her mobile store can cope with rain, “my plants will be well watered”, but extreme wind definitely causes a problem.

Andrea added that she thoroughly enjoys meeting and

This year at the Show the band will be playing one or two brackets in the main entertainment area prior to leading the Grand Parade.

When asked what the band members enjoy about the Courtenay Show, the answer was a simple one for band spokesperson Andrea Barnhill who responded, “we enjoy meeting Showgoers and we love supporting community events, as well as encouraging like minded people to perhaps join our band.

“We, along with the Show organisers are all hoping for good weather - and in fact the temperature affects the tone of both the bagpipes and the drums,” Andrea said.

In between entertaining, band members and their families hope to have a browse around the Show and make the most of a wonderful day out.

My role is to promote this section to ensure that we attract a large display of vehicles that we consider will be of interest to the public who attend the Show. We also encourage folk to enter the competition classes which provide people with the opportunity to showcase their skills as a restorer of a vintage tractor, farm implement, or farm machinery.

To attract entrants I make contact with all local vintage machinery clubs inviting their members to participate in the display and/or competition sections at the Show. While many entrants are repeat entrants, there are still many more who are new to this section at the Courtenay A & P Show.

There can be between twenty and thirty tractors alone displayed, and up to a dozen competing in the restoration classes. Each year there are

several traction engines on display - and these are always crowd pleasers.

The Christchurch Historic Machinery Club sets up a display of about twenty working stationary engines each year and these always attract a big audience.

The Classic Car section usually sees twenty to thirty vehicles on display also and these are all entered into the ‘People’s Choice’ best classic car competition.

(For those wondering about the eras for cars in this section: Veteran and vintage vehicles are pre 1931; Post Vintage and war vehicles 1932-1960, Post 1960 vehicles) A large display of model vehicles and machines are also a part of the vintage machinery section and bound to be popular with those attending.

Are there any special features or additional classes in this section this year?

We are indebted to Bray Street Engineering (Darfield) this year, as they have sponsored this section. In addition to sponsorship they will have a display alongside our section, which I hope folk will take the time to browse through.

On the day what are your duties? Do you have assistance?

On the day I convene the section along with one steward.

We arrange the display as the vehicles arrive, and assist the judges as required.

Courtenay A & P Show will also continue to offer people the opportunity to not only view, but also to compete with quality livestock, and other items relating to rural life from vintage tractors to fruit cakes.

The pig section of the Canterbury A & P Show has been transformed by friendly rivalry between groups of young farmers.

Rivalry was rife this year with two younger groups; one calling themselves the Bhuja Boar Breeders Association, the other first-time entrants, the Selwyn Swine Syndicate - both complete with witty animal names and snappy dressing.

A group of mates from the Glenmark rugby club, North Canterbury, make up the Bhuja Boar Breeders Association and turned out in matching blazers and maroon ties.

The local syndicate, Selwyn Swine Breeders Syndicate (also known as the Hairy Hog Handlers), members James Davidson, Davidson Tim McNae and Scott Carnochan were ‘out to beat the Bhuja boys’ and made their presence felt with three boars; Pablo Escoboar, Frank Lucus, and Notorious P.I.G., along with two sows; Amy Swinehouse and Beth Heke entered.

Both groups have Facebook pages and ‘a good bit of banter flies between them’ explained James.

“We’re first time entrants, but Bhuja Boars have been at the Show for the past couple of

years, so we’re trying to see if we can stick it to them. It’s a good bit of friendly competition,” he enthused. “It’s all a bit of fun, but serious fun.” Even outside of the pig section the fun continued with the Selwyn group creating a stir of excitement in the Grand Parade, when they threw hats out to eager youngsters in the crowd.

This year pig entries for the Show were at a level not seen for decades. There were no entries at all in 2010 and only one or two each year since until this year when 44 entries were received. James believes the new good-natured rivalry of the young syndicates may have encouraged traditional breeders back to the section.

The rise in numbers has allowed for the introduction of a new commercial class which looks for ‘the perfect eating pig’, regardless of breed.

James proudly entered Pablo Escoboar, a ginger-spotted cross between a Berkshire mother and a Tamworth father who is apparently as friendly as a house cat. James though didn’t hold high hopes for him as he felt he lacked a bit of length and the big hams the judges were looking for in the commercial class.

“I like the Tamworth because it’s a bit slower growing and it is better eating, then you get the stockiness from the Berkshire,” he explained. “But this mother was as mad as hell. I don’t actually have her any more, for good reason!

“He, however is a bloody good character; friendly and will trot around anywhere.”

With three boars now in the syndicate James is unsure of Pablo’s future. “I’m pretty keen to hang onto him. He’s a pretty nice-natured boar. He just doesn’t quite have the length and the big arse that some of the other ones do,” he explained. “He’s got a bit of character to him though.”

In 2015, after a fatality and several near misses on the highway from Springfield township to the Domain camp ground, Murray and Leslie Faulkner generously gifted a strip of their land to the Council for the construction of a safe walking path.

Springfield’s Township Committee were approached to take up the challenge of walkway construction and this they have done outstandingly! The Committee had access to a development fund (although this went through a few glitches before being released), so after budgeting and strategic planning it looked like the project could get underway.

“We had to finalise the position of the track, which sounds easy, but started several robust discussions about the two routes up for debate,” said a spokesperson for the Township Committee.

“The months rolled by as the two plans were discussed and after a change in Township

The Domain Board, recognising that their facility was the walkway’s destination, turned the construction into a real community affair by undertaking to construct the pathway from the embankment’s end to the Domain.

The construction wasn’t without its headaches however with a large culvert needed for a stream crossing taking an inordinate amount of time to gain the necessary consents (“a

full year for a Resource Consent”). A massive amount of wor k followe d by loca l contractors, fencers and hireage companies to install everything necessary for a compliant walkway - complete with culvert and retaining walls. Not to mention back up assistance and morning teas by support personnel; but now finally after all these months it’s ready to use and completed in time for the summer holiday season.

“Well done to everyone involved in a real township effort,” the committee spokesperson added, “and a really big thanks to Lesley and Murray Faulkner who came up with the idea.”

Ten year old West Melton girl, Winnie Taylor, Taylor was born with Cerebral Palsy which has affected her lower limbs, although when younger she was able to walk with a walker. As time passed she lost this ability and is now confined to a wheelchair.

Winnie’s mum, Kylie Taylor, Taylor said, “ Winnie is very determined young lady and there is not much that stops her.”

With everything going on in her life Winnie has managed to find her passion; riding horses and she has been doing so from the early age of two. When asked how Winnie first became involved in horses, Kylie explained, “our family has always had horses, my grandad raced gallopers, while my dad still races trotters and pacers. I rode for most of my life and still do, so it was a natural progression for Winnie to ride as we spent so much time around horses.

“When Winnie began she needed, and still does, full

support to help her ride. Riding though allows Winnie a sense of freedom. She feels like she is the same as her able-bodied peers and she can be heard calling her ponies her angels. Riding also gives her a sense of self worth and is her ‘go to’ when things are getting tough,” Kylie said.

Riding comes with an array of challenges for Winnie, such as needing to stretch her legs for around fifteen minutes prior to each ride before she can even sit on the saddle correctly. Once Winnie finishes riding her muscles are incredibly tight and she requires a spa each time to relax them. Her stomach muscles also hurt from holding herself up, so she uses a wheat bag for a few hours afterwards to assist with the discomfort.

“Despite every challenge she faces she gets such joy and happiness from riding and she still wants to compete and ride,” Kylie explained.

Winnie has been classified as a para-equestrian rider.

Unfortunately she is unable to compete in para-events until she is twelve and because of this she is having to compete with able bodied riders in her age group.

Winnie is currently working towards qualifying for Horse Of The Year in March 2018. This is of course made a lot harder, as she is trying to again qualify against able-bodied riders.

“Nevertheless,” Kylie commented, “if Winnie doesn’t qualify she will still go and meet the para-riders and see what it takes to get to Paralympic level.”

In the future Winnie and her family are planning on her getting as much riding mileage as possible, which means when she is of an age to compete in the para-equestrian events, she can hit the ground running. From that point on the plan is to attend events and competitions to get to the Paralympics.

Meanwhile the family plan to continue to fundraise in preparation for the journey ahead.

Winnie has a very supportive family and her stepdad, Kevin Taylor, Taylor plays a huge part in making sure she has everything she needs to compete.

“He has worked hard to modify her saddle to enable Winnie to ride and has fitted out the horse float to accommodate her wheelchair and with a couch so, she has a place to rest,” Kylie concluded.

Squash Canterbury held their annual awards evening at the George hotel, Christchurch on October 27th and representatives of the Malvern Squash Club were invited along.

The Club and its members were up for a number of awards across a variety of Categories.

The Club has been investing heavily in their facilities this year and driving improvements, so it was a great opportunity for its members to take a wellearned rest and enjoy the evening.

First up was Joel Parris who was nominated for most improved player. Joel plays competitively for the Club on the Monday night interclub circuit and has had some great results. While Joel was pipped at the post it was still a fantastic achievement to be nominated and to stand out as a player in a field that covers the whole of Canterbury was no mean feat.

Next up was Club president, Chris van der Salm.

Salm A number of successes in National tournaments saw Chris pick up Canterbury’s Player of the Year award. Another achievement for Chris who has been instrumental in driving the Club forward in his role as president.

Chris was absent from the

awards playing in Australia and the accolade was collected on his behalf by Rodney Fairbrass.

The evening climaxed with the award for Squash Club of the year. This is a prestigious award and the Club was more than delighted to just be nominated. Not only did the Malvern Squash Club gain a nomination, but they also won the award! Club stalwart Peter Bond stepped forward to collect the award commenting that it was testament to all the hard work that everyone in the Club has contributed.

In his acceptance speech Peter was thrilled to single out a number of key individuals who have really stood out: • Club President Chris van der S a l m w ho h a s b e e n instrumental in a number of initiatives, including pennant competitions and bringing world number 12 Paul Coll to the Club for an exhibition evening. Chris continues to drive the Club forward and has recently signed off an initiative to encourage new m e m b e r s b y off e r i n g discounted rates for the first year.

• Next to be recognised was Brendon Clucas who has invested a lot of time and effort in improving the

facilities at the Club, as well as ongoing maintenance on the premises. Clubs like Malvern rely on people like Brendon with their commitment and expertise.

• Mark Cornish was also acclaimed for his relentless coaching activities. He has brought significant improvements to abilities across the Club not the least in the juniors. His knowledge and enthusiasm are paramount to the success in this area.

Needless to say, the Club is looking forward to the year ahead being another successful one.

Local Greendale cricketer, Henry Shipley, has again made the senior premier team, Canterbury Kings, playing the season as a right arm fast-medium bowler. He recently played in round four of the Plunket Shield against Wellington Firebirds at the Basin Reserve, in Wellington and scored his first five wicket bag with figures of 5-37.

The Malvern Schools’ Athletics was held at Darfield High School on Monday, November 20th and was a twilight gathering beginning at 3.45pm and running until approximately 8:15pm. Athletes from year 5 (and at least nine year’s old) were eligible to compete and are required to have qualified in their sections by attaining pre-set results at individual school events, held prior.

A selection of students will now compete at the Canterbury Athletics event in early December.

West Melton Bowling Club’s opening day was held on Saturday, September 23rd.

President Mary Burke welcomed a good attendance of current members, plus new ones; Willie Bell, Bell Kyle Bingham, Bingham Lorraine Davis, Davis Richard Bradley and Syd Horgan.

Horgan Club stalwart Ross Sadler had the honour of delivering the first bowl for the season after his son Allan Sadler rolled up the jack.

Congratulations go to Gretta Leigh, Leigh Bill Paekau, Paekau Bob Burnett and Paul Williams who were

selected to play for Canterbury Country in their respective divisions.

Pre-Christmas Saturday competitions for Club members include Centre 3 x 4’s, 2 x 4’s, Development 4’s (previously Junior 4’s) which are played in the morning and the Malvern Fives which are played in the afternoon.

Ladies Pennants - a Malvern competition is played on Wednesdays.

On Thursday nights West Melton Bowling Club has three

Development teams (under eight years) playing in the Centre Development Triples Competition.

Club competitions include Men’s Triples played on Wednesday nights and on Tuesday nights the Ladies play their Club Triples.

Social Bowls will start on Thursday, February 8th; this competition is for all nonbowlers, and now is an ideal opportunity to get teams of four organised and entries submitted.
