Every four years the World Jet Boat Marathon comes to New Zealand. It’s the pinnacle of river racing globally shared between the participating countries (New Zealand, USA, Canada and Mexico).

From the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers in Canterbury, on to the Waitaki, Matukituki, Upper Clutha and Dart in Queenstown the marathon took place from October 14th until the 21st.

A gruelling race of time trials and accuracy with clean river runs were tackled by three local teams consisting of: Wayne Boyes with navigator Mark Moore in the CX Class, Dean Frew with navigator Alastair Sime in the FX Class and Gareth Munro with navigator Andrew Munro in the A Class.

“The whole event was well run and our team came away happy with our results, though we did hope for better,” Dean commented after his inaugural entry into the realm of racing.

Local Fire and Emergency New Zealand and St John ambulance services performed some outstanding work and rescues during the recent floods. In particular was the Darfield Fire Brigade who came to the rescue of a man who had climbed up a large pine tree after his utility was swept away downstream after driving into the flooded and swollen Greendale Ford.

Awesome work by Trout who bravely swam across the flooded ford, with life jacket, to rescue the stranded man, late at night. Legend!

A week later a second vehicle was washed away in a ford near Whitecliffs, fortunately the driver managed to exit the vehicle before it was swept away.

The Canterbury Plains are very flat, so in times of heavy,

consistent rain, streams and rivers will rise fast and flooding will result. Stay out of fords and river crossings, or at least stop and inspect the crossing before you drive in. Entering in your vehicle is potentially putting yourself and others in danger.

Grass growth is taking off now, along with incidents of reported livestock being loose on our roads and road verges. Now is a great time for farmers to get out and do a stock proof inspection of their roadside boundary fence lines and make any required repairs.

Stop intersections continue to be dangerous locations in Canterbury for vehicle crashes.

The message is STOP, at stop intersections, look left and right and do not proceed until your way is safe and clear. Each year locals crash into locals at Stop Intersections; totally unnecessary if people had first stopped!

Always an important message, but even more so as the holiday season approaches - drive safely out on our roads!

everyone can reduce the amount of rubbish, how it can be recycled and what it does to the environment.

Yoghurt pottles, pouches and cling-film are also being recycled by The Cat’s Pyjamas through TerraCycle, a not for profit company that offers free recycling programmes funded by environmentally conscientious companies to help collect and recycle hard-torecycle waste. The Centre earns reward points for the waste collected for Terracycle, which they are then able to donate to their chosen charities.

The Cat’s Pyjamas are also part of Paper4trees, an environmental education programme run by EERST (Environmental Education for Resource Sustainability Trust), encouraging schools and preschools to reduce the amount of paper and cardboard waste they send to landfill. As a reward for participating in this great initiative, Cat’s Pyjamas are given native trees to plant in their community.

“We are so very proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity that the children have shown towards the recycling initiatives we have implemented at The Cat’s Pyjamas”, commented Tracy Summerfield, Summerfield the Centre Owner. “Our next mission will be looking at what we can do with our food scraps,” she ended.

A local, family owned butchery, based in Greendale, is no stranger to awards - having secured more than a few during its years of operation.

Greendale Butchery, trading as Ashby’s Butchery has again taken out awards in the 2017 Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition. This year’s gold medal prize winner was their Pepperoni Bierstick (which now proudly wears three golds). Ashby’s in Greendale specialises in manufacturing small goods, bacon and provides homekill services in the Selwyn area. Their gluten free, award-winning Biersticks are a blend of beef and pork, all Manuka smoked and all made with top quality ingredients.

Business owners Bronwyn and Matthew Dering pride themselves on quality products and have in the past won awards for sausages, bacon and ham.

This particular Bierstick has been produced by Matthew and Bronwyn for the past three years as an off-shoot from their Salami-Guy salamis. The product’s popularity surpassed the couple’s wildest expectations and they’ve been producing it ever since.

To be successful in the recent awards’ process product samples were sent to Auckland for judging. The inner and outer texture of all sausages submitted was assessed and once cooked (if required) assessed again on appearance, along with aroma, texture, composition and taste. All entries are judged by two judges, one with a butchery background and one with a culinary background.

“The decision-making process was i nte ns e,” Bronwyn reported, “with category judging done in Auckland during late

September, before the top scoring sausages in each category progress through to the final judging.”

This final judging produces a Supreme winner, a People's Choice and the Devro New Zealand Wild Card. All the gold medal winning products got mystery shopped in early October with the final judging on October 12th. The competition, which was comprised of twelve categories, saw the Greendale entries up against 512 other products from throughout New Zealand.

“We were blown away that we not only won Gold on the Bier Stick this year, but we also took out the Devro New Zealand Wild Card,” Bronwyn enthused. “This means we were the top scoring product produced in a Devro casing! Our award-winning Biersticks can be purchased from Lyttelton Farmers Market or The Meating Room, at 129 Storeys Road, Greendale,” she added.

For the Malvern Lions and the Kirwee Bowling Club, a great deal of organising culminated in a very successful Casino Night last Saturday. The event was held to raise funds for the rebuild of the dining area of the Bowls’ Clubhouse, which is now underway.

Around 200 people filled the Kirwee Hall, which had been turned into a mock casino for the evening, with a contingent of Lions members serving as croupiers, cashiers and auctioneers. There was a great deal of hilarity around the gaming tables as fortunes were

won and lost, resulting in some of the luckier (or more canny) players being able to bid vast amounts on the lots put up for auction, while others could only stand in amazement at the size of the bids. The cash wasn't real, but the prizes certainly were, and an impressive array of art work, tools, bedding, food and drink, appliances, and vouchers for goods and services found new homes amongst the bidders.

While not everybody chose to dress up for the occasion, there was strong competition

for the ‘Best Dressed’ prizes, which were won by Sarah Barnard and Glenn Sparrow.

Sparrow The organisers believe that they achieved what they set out to do, by providing a most entertaining and enjoyable night out for those who attended, whilst boosting the coffers to pay for their building project.

They expect to have made approximately $7,000.

The Bowling Club thank all who supported the evening, in particular the Malvern Lions, who underpinned the whole event.

DO I STRETCH BEFORE OR AFTER MY RUN? – STRETCHING, THE WHAT, WHEN, AND WHY Summer is finally dawning, and it is beautiful weather for an evening jog, or a family kick-around in the garden. No matter the type of physical activity, it is critical to stretch, for injury prevention, and keep your body young. All sports are demanding on the body and require repetitive, strong movements of muscles. Each time a muscle works, it contracts, and when it does this repeatedly, for example when running, it can remain in this shortened position. Short and tight muscles are more likely to sustain an injury. Stretching counteracts this, by lengthening the muscles.

Stretching before activity aims to warm muscles up and therefore should be dynamic (moving) stretches. Here are two great ones to do ten times on each side before activity: Stretching after activity helps to lengthen muscles that have become shorter and tighter from being worked so hard. Therefore, it needs to be sustained and still. Here are two stretches that target lots of different muscles at once, and these are perfect to perform after activity with a 30sec hold on each side.

Local builder and business owner Lance Irving and his wife Marianne both grew up on farms in rural areas and so after travelling for many years a lifestyle block, theirs is in West Melton, was the obvious choice.

“With ignition problems, we missed two starts on the Waitaki River, which put us lower down the field than we hoped, but the boat ended up finishing the race still in great condition.”

Racing for Gareth and his brother Andrew went exactly as they proposed and Gareth said, “our team started out exactly as we planned, which was to keep the boat in the water the whole week, which we managed comfortably”.

“We were extremely happy placing fourth in the A Class out of the twelve competitors, especially as we had engine issues on the Rakaia that slowed us down by twelve minutes.”

Gareth’s team had a good run the whole race, and completed without a ‘did not finish’ to their name, coming in tenth overall in the competition out of the fortyfive boats entered. “One of the highlights for us as a team was that we finished the racing with

the boat still ready to race the next day, which is thanks to skilled racing, but also to the amazing support team we had,” he said.

Sadly the event was marred by a tragic accident on the Waimakariri when Jet Boat River Racing lost one of its family members (the navigator of CX21). As to be expected this resulted in the rejigging of the race schedule from that originally planned.

For Wayne and his navigator Mark it was a seventh place in his class from the twelve boats

competing. He commented that, “I boated some hard rivers and did great until the last leg where I managed to run aground once.

That mistake cost me some places, but boat and team emerged all in one piece and still happy with our results in the end. I can’t thank our support team and followers enough,” Wayne said.

It almost goes without saying that all the teams gratefully and appreciatively thank their sponsors and crews, along with all the spectators who travelled to support them.

Last week saw many local school children travelling to the annual Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival held in the Horncastle Arena. Now in its 78th year the Music Festival has come a long way since its 1938 beginnings in the Christchurch Civic Theatre.

The Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival aims to provide the children of the massed choirs with an enjoyable experience of choral music performed at the highest possible standard. It also aims to expose the children to a wide

variety of genre and styles of choral music. The event assists with choral training based on the development of wellproduced head tone and other important vocal techniques, along with development of the personal responsibility and self-discipline required for music performance. Local schools from the District attended the festival as part of the 104 participating institutions from the Canterbury area. With around 4,000 students attending the festival, the event is spread over three nights running from October 25th,

through to the 27th.

This year the theme for the Festival was ‘Whatever the Weather’ and included classic songs such as 'Blue Skies', 'Weather with You', and the huge crowd favourite 'Africa'.

Choirs from participating Canterbury schools had been practicing individually since the beginning of the year, so as to be ready for the event.

Immediately prior to the Festival there have also been school gatherings to carry out joint practices.

There are separate junior and senior representative choirs (comprised of students from Years 5 through to 8) and these choirs each presented their own bracket of songs accompanied by the symphony orchestra. This orchestra was made up of approximately seventy musicians also from Years 5-8.

On each of the three nights the 1,000 students present also all participated in a mass choir.

Five local area primary schools (Darfield, Greendale, West Mel ton, D un sa nd e l a nd Springfield) performed on varying nights throughout the festival.

Those attending reported that each school choir was full of enthusiasm and sang with hearts full of passion and dedication. One grandparent was heard to comment, “what a delight it is to see the children so confident in themselves and so proud of the schools they represent.”

It is the time of year again when local Malvern schools embrace their rural surroundings and schedule their pet days. Pupils not only present their pets on the day, but back this up with extensive research and knowledge of the animal’s care and attention. While some schools have already held their Pet days, students at others are still completing assignments in preparation for their days which will soon take place.

As well as showcasing their pets, students at many schools have also worked hard on a variety of displays such as sand saucers, healthy lunch boxes, pet rocks and pet projects to name but a few, and these were also presented on Pet Day. West Melton School held their pet day on Friday, October 20th, after a two year hiatus with wonderful weather making the day enjoyable for all. The School had an Agricultural Pet Day theme and held numerous activities relating to this theme throughout the day.

Darfield Primary School students brought their pets along to school on Thursday, October 26th, with both indoor and outdoor pets finding the temperature all a little hot.

However, this didn’t stop one of the chickens in the indoor pet section from laying an egg, much to the delight and excitement of the children in the room.

Windwhistle School also enjoyed glorious weather for their event on Friday, October 27th, which made it a fantastic day for those with outside animals.

Greendale School pupils attended their Pet Day on October 27th with lots of pet entries from lambs to goldfish

and budgies. Those without a pet brought along their decorated bikes, scooters and skateboards.

The Greendale School annual cake auction was a great success with over $4000 raised by the PTA to go towards the children's learning.

Many of the remaining schools who are planning to hold their pet days over the next few weeks are hopeful that they too will see their events held under sunny skies as well.

FLEAS: PUSSY CAT, PUSSY CAT, WHERE ARE YOU??

Fleas can become a worrying problem for anyone. It is usually a mystery as to how they get into your home to start with; you vacuum regularly, the cat has a flea collar, and you keep the house clean and tidy. Even the self- proclaimed, all powerful flea bomb, does not seem to rid the home of pesky fleas for long. The fix for him was a cat door which is paired with a cat collar which is secured onto your cat. The door recognises the collar and only opens for your pet, leaving intruder animals at the door. No more fleas.

Nothing’s a Problem!

With the weather man telling us we would have a beau+ful Spring day, we boarded our bus and headed off to Geraldine and surrounding areas. An+cipa+on was high as to what we would be discovering.

Our first stop was at Victoria Wood Works 13.5k north of Geraldine, surrounded by a beau+ful garden where we enjoyed morning tea kindly provided by our hostess. From there it was on to Geraldine where we collected our tour guide, Jenny Whiten. This lady was a font of local knowledge and told us many interes+ng bits and pieces about her district. The flowering cherries we passed in the liNle park were giUed to the township by their sister school in Japan and we saw the site of the recently held Stover Fete; there is also a ukulele fes+val held in the town yearly. The ‘Go Geraldine’ website is available to check up on this busy liNle town. We were given +me to browse the shops before all mee+ng at Mundell’s Cafe for a very substan+al roast lunch. With the sun shining and the temperatures climbing into the mid 20's it would have been very easy to doze off aUer our lunch but it was off to our next adventure from here.

Jenny kept us enlightened with other useful snippets along the way, telling us that the iconic liNle theatre was the first in the township to have electricity. This would have proven very entertaining to the locals back in the day.

On arrival at Pleasant Valley Daffodils we were made welcome and invited to view the many varie+es on display. I am sure many of us will be looking forward to the arrival of our next season’s bulbs. We made our way out to the fields to view the last of this season’s flowers s+ll giving us a very impressive display… William Wordsworth’s "host of golden daffodils" came to mind.

On board the bus again and this +me to visit a hidden gem in Kakahu Valley, about 30k from Geraldine. Mulvi Hills was a beau+ful garden set in the foothills with a stunning display of trilliums, red, white, cream and the rare yellow. Our hostess was a very lively ninety year old lady who informed us that she had every inten+on of seeing her next lot of seedlings flowering...in seven years!

It was +me to follow the trail homeward aUer this adventure, being entertained by a sing song provided by an interes+ng music selec+on, compliments of Mr Mayo. I am sure everyone enjoyed their day and so I would like to say a big thank you to our locals who helped put this altogether.

Organisers suggest assembling the Clan for one of the biggest Scottish Festivals in the Southern hemisphere; the Hororata Highland Games, on November 11th at the Hororata Domain. The Hororata Highland Games is a vibrant cultural festival with something for everyone and 2017 will be no exception, they promise.

“The Scottish Heavy events are always an exciting and different sport for spectators with the best athletes in the world battling it out for the Oceania Heavyweight Championship. We have one of the biggest Highland Dancing competitions in New Zealand which runs right throughout the day,” explained Event Manager Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll “The really cool thing about the Games is not only can you watch all the different competitions, but you can ‘Have A Go’ yourself; all ages can try and toss a Caber or Sheaf. New this year is a light version of the mighty Hororata Stones, or for the brave see how long you can hold a note on the Bagpipes,” Cindy added.

This year the Games fall on Armistice Day and in respect of this, there will be a

remembrance held at 11am right before the Chieftain’s Welcoming Ceremony.

For the first time at Hororata, internationally acclaimed Celtic singer, Steve McDonald, McDonald will perform throughout the day.

Steve has been a prominent figure in New Zealand music for the past twenty-five years.

“The Closing Ceremony this year will be spectacular starting with the Tug O’ War finals and the mighty Hororata Stones, followed by competing Highland Dancing choreographed groups and Steve McDonald performing, before ending with the heart-pounding Massed Bands march,” Cindy added.

“Also new for 2017 are our Whisky Seminars with Michael FraserFraser-Milne.

Milne Michael, from Whisky Galore, has partnered with the Hororata Community Trust to source and promote the Hororata Whisky. Each year the Trust launches new Whiskies which generally sell out at the Games. A common comment from visitors is they want to hear more about Scotland’s national drink, and with his vast experience, Michael is the perfect person to provide this information.”

There are over one hundred market stalls surrounding the event, offering a huge variety of craft, produce, clothes, jewellery and much more. There is a great range of food vendors to tempt taste buds, with more Scottish food to experience, including, Haggis Burgers, Lorne Sausage, Black pudding and Chocolate Cranachan than ever before.

“Of course the Hororata Pie eating competition will be back along with a new porridge eating competition for the children. People can visit Clan Lane and discover their Scottish heritage or connect with their own Clan,” Cindy added.

The Hororata Highland Games are a huge day out, with something to do right from gates opening at 9am until the closing ceremony at 4pm. There is ample free parking on-site and this year there have been changes to the entry and exit to keep traffic moving.

I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a par+cularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?" "No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied. "Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?" I asked. "No, I don't waste +me fishing," the homeless man said, "I need to spend all my +me trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on hun+ng equipment?" I asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man.

"I haven't gone hun+ng in 20 years!"

"Well," I said, "I'm not going to give you money.

Instead, I'm going to take you home for a shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife." The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that? I replied, "Don't worry about that. It's important for her to see what a man looks like aUer he has given up drinking, fishing and hun+ng."
