Every four years the World Jet Boat Marathon comes to New Zealand. It’s the pinnacle of river racing globally shared between the participating countries (New Zealand, USA, Canada and Mexico). From the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers in Canterbury, on to the Waitaki, Matukituki, Upper Clutha and Dart in Queenstown the marathon took place from October 14th until the 21st. A gruelling race of time trials and accuracy with clean river runs were tackled by three local teams consisting of: Wayne Boyes with navigator Mark Moore in the CX Class, Dean Frew with navigator Alastair Sime in the FX Class and Gareth Munro with navigator Andrew Munro in the A Class. “The whole event was well run and our team came away happy with our results, though we did hope for better,” Dean commented after his inaugural entry into the realm of racing.
