Windwhistle’s Amanda King is a fully trained school teacher who initially combined her passion for photography and her skill for instruction, to teach photography classes. It wasn’t long before she realised that photography really was a passion and while Amanda was known as a children’s photographer her love of animals eventually came to the fore.

“I am a children’s photographer,” Amanda explained, “but I love animals and really wanted my own Highland cow print. I set about taking photos of Highland cows and that is how my photography business, ‘By The Horns’ began!”

“While I began by taking photos of mainly bulls I now get requests for all types of farm animals. They are such beautiful creatures, and they

all have their own unique personalities,” Amanda added.

The Pink Ribbon Appeal is the annual national fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation and all the money raised on the nationwide appeal days of October 13th and 14th is added to the national collection total.

The Darfield collection team looked stunning in pink, greeting everyone with a friendly smile and a bit of welcome banter. The total collected from this area will be announced as soon as figures have been collated.

In her review of Café Operana, Anna Bowen, Bowen the Whare Flat Festival Co-ordinator wrote: “Lois Johnston's voice swoops, dives, sighs, and beckons. It shines as lustrous and warm as the gold of Helen Webby's orchestral harp, played with edginess, swing, and breathtaking finesse. Sophia Bidwell gives us all the accordion is capable of throughout the show, from playful rippling melody lines and rhythmic bass to the broad enveloping chords that make us weak in the knees.”

The Gillanders’ family sadly lost a family member, William Gillanders who, while overseas serving his country, was killed in a train accident prior to the Battle of Passchendaele. The almost 80 attendees of the event appreciated the appearance of Sheffield Primary School students who took time out of their school holidays to put on their school uniforms and sing ‘Oh Passchendaele’ at the event, as well as perform their kapa haka routine.

October 29th will see the sixth Oxford Garden Fete take place (wet or fine!) in the relaxed and beautiful setting of Ribblesdale Gardens. The location is ideal for meandering and browsing while enjoying the wide selection of quality stalls the event organisers have attracted. Stalls situated amongst the sheltered stunning garden complete with blossoming trees, flowering azaleas, rhododendrons and clematis, plus a host of other specialty plants.

This year’s stalls will feature a range of crafts, women’s

clothing and accessories, children’s wear and toys, garden plants and garden accessories, plus recycled products made into very desirable and useful objects.

Wee Dram Farm Park will attend again for children to enjoy and a large sandpit, plus Beyond the Fairies will enthrall and entertain them all.

Celebrity Chef Richard Till will operate the barbecue in a ‘No Bullshit Cooking’ demonstration for men, followed by a tasting session afterwards. Popular band ‘Assembly Required’,

(described as a high energy and highly entertaining duo) will doubtless delight the crowd with their performance.

Organisers have secured a wide variety of food stalls and these are to be scattered throughout the property offering a selection of tasty products. Burnham’s Straight 8 winery and The Good Drop Craft brewery from Rangiora will also have their outstanding products available to sample.

Mark November 5th on the calendar for the opportunity to view six magnificent gardens in the general Hororata area.

Organised by the Hororata Primary School’s PTA the event is a School fundraiser and as well as the amazing gardens to view there’ll also be a display of children’s art work, food (at Guillaumedowns garden), a raffle and plants to purchase.

No EFTPOS is available so those attending are advised to plan ahead, rather than miss out.

Organisers advise that no dogs are to be brought along and for event registration and toilet facilities head to the Hororata Domain. The Domain is also a great place to spread out a picnic blanket and enjoy lunch.

Organisers thank the following property owners for opening up their gardens and for all the hard work they will have put in prior to the event.

‘Haldon’: Haldon’: The history of this garden stretches back to 1848

when Samuel Bealey purchased Haldon, a huge property that ran from Hororata down to the Main South Road. Visitors can see the magnificent old trees and more, much more. This is the first time this garden has been opened to the public.

Those attending will also have the opportunity to meet top New Zealand sculptor, Sam Harrison, who will be on site.

‘Arbourlea’: Arbourlea’: This property has been with the present owners for 24 years. Extensive garden planning and designing has taken place over this time with the grounds now immaculately groomed and a paddock has been converted into a park-like area containing a variety of trees and hedges.

‘Downs Road Garden’: Garden’: This smaller and most attractive garden always delights passersby who are generally surprised with the growth under the mailbox and the tidy hedging that has been formed. Once

inside visitors will be amazed at the clever planting and layout.

The owners advise it is an extremely colourful summer garden and the ideas gleaned from it will no doubt be something for visitors to take away with them.

‘Yarrabee Downs’: Downs’: This garden is over 150 years old and at over two acres is extensive.

Over the past 25 years with the current owners, the garden has been planted with daffodils, rhododendron, camellia, crab apple, roses and natives. The inclusion of new hedging, a water way flowing through, a large vegetable garden and a home orchard all make it another exciting garden to visit.

‘Guillaumedowns’: Guillaumedowns’: This garden was designed and built by the current owners and is located on the rolling foothills just outside Hororata. It is a four and a half acre garden incorporating a mixture of informal English, as well as New

Zealand native. Set amidst three large ponds this garden is always evolving and definitely a joy to behold.

‘Terrace Station’: Station’: This is a 19th century heritage property with

The annual Open Day, which is to be held on Sunday, November 19th, will this year try something new with the inclusion of the Canterbury Creative Fibre group.

The Group will not only present demonstrations, but also offer their wares for sale.

Valerie Gifford, Gifford Patron of Canterbury Creative Fibre, as well as a Homebush Stables Committee member has been instrumental in bringing the two entities together. Val has just recently given up providing spinning demonstrations at Homebush for tourists and Cruise Ship visitors, something she has done for the past eighteen years.

This year at the Stables Open Day there will be a range of outlets selling yarn from multiple varieties of wool, as well as craft stalls. Glentunnel School students plan to run a raffle plus a sweet stall and the public will also have the ability to purchase plants from another onsite stall.

Those attending the Open Day will be given the opportunity to

attend spinning and weaving demonstrations throughout the day - the weaving one of which will be interactive. The Malvern Spinners and Weavers group will encourage Open Day visitors to participate in the making of woven squares. These will then be sewn together to a make a rug which at completion is to be donated to a local charity.

Open Day attendees will have the chance to meander through the Homebush grounds and enjoy the many different walks on offer. They can also choose to visit the museum, where a variety of motor demonstrations will be presented.

The event is definitely a wonderful way to enjoy a family day out. Beginning with free entry for children, an exciting teddy bears’ picnic under the trees is also scheduled.

Children just need to bring their favourite teddy, with the committee providing the honey sandwiches, and lots and lots of bubbles for the littlies to play with.

While Country Feast Caterers will have the Swingle Tree Cafe open for the purchase of delicious food, committee member and

For those who would like a

welcome sit-down, or some company, the old shop will be open to rest, knit and natter.

osteoporosis. This is likely due to a lack of awareness among middle-aged and older women and their physicians about the risk of osteoporosis.

Some early signs that may indicate bone loss are: • Not getting much sun exposure • Difficulty getting up from a chair without using your arms to push • Joint or muscle aches • A resting pulse greater than 80 beats per minute • Height loss • Increased stooping (curvature of the spine) • Receding gums • Decreased grip strength • Weak and brittle fingernails • Cramps, muscle aches • Low overall fitness.

If you have risk factors for osteoporosis - meaning you’re a woman, postmenopausal, slight build, take medication, or you’re vitamin D-deficient, among others - don’t wait until you have symptoms to get screened. Unfortunately, bone loss, leading to osteoporosis, often occurs without any noticeable symptoms, so by the time you have a fracture, feel pain, or develop curvature of the spine, osteoporosis may already be present.

Luckily, if you identify bone loss early, you can take steps to reduce your risk of osteoporosis.

More than thirty people braved a cold and wet evening to attend the third historical film evening, held in the Greendale Hall on October 7th.

First up was Greendale local Graham Gough who enthralled those present with his film of the Greendale School Centenary.

“There was an extremely good parade with impressive floats, traction engines and horses,” commented one of the organisers. “The highlight was the judging of the ‘Bearded Men’ competition which created a lot of amusement in the preening and measuring of the

beards!”

The audience was then entertained and informed by a film lent by Rodney Ridgen, Ridgen in which there was footage of the early farming days of the Ridgen family; featuring Eddie (senior) and Hilda Ridgen, Ridgen with Edgar and Frank Ridgen as young boys, along with their favourite pet fox terriers.

It was reported that there was an assortment of farm machinery in the film, including a Sunshine harvester made in Australia. “There were some very woolly Corriedales who looked huge, unlike their

Two Rivers Community Trust are excited to be hosting a free event for primary and intermediate young people in the community on Tuesday, October 31st at the Darfield Recreational Centre. The Roller Disco Light Party will be run by Ingrid from PhatSk8, who has skates for all sizes, disco lights, music and plenty of fun games to play while skating!

“We are thrilled to welcome her out to Darfield with her skating fun,” said Kelly Maude, Maude one of the organisers. “This event was inspired by discussions from a group of mums wishing there was an alternative to trick or treating on Halloween. What has been created is a fun and safe place for our young people to be, with the chance to enjoy hanging out with friends from local schools. It has hopefully also created an opportunity for parents to have a good catch up with each other, and perhaps have a go at skating too (Ingrid has plenty of adult sized skates),” Kelly added.

While organisers acknowledge that part of Halloween is Trick or Treating, this event will

involve plenty of Treats without any Tricks!

“Giving treats is sometimes as rewarding as receiving treats, so if you are able to bring along a donation to our Community Food Bank, this will be a real treat to many people in our community,” Kelly commented.

The Food Bank is coordinated by the Malvern Community Hub which operates from the Darfield Library 10am until 2pm on term-time Thursdays.

“Part of their role is putting together care packages for people who need them in our community. Anyone able to give should ensure items are nonperishable and have good expiry dates - suggested donations include any tinned food, school lunch box items, muesli bars, noodles, spreads (Marmite, jam, peanut butter) and there will be boxes to put your donations into at the Roller Disco.”

There’ll be plenty of glow stick treats given out at the Roller disco to add to the Light Party atmosphere and Darfield’s greengrocer will be supplying fresh fruit platters as a healthy treat. Other treats will be available for purchase outside in the carpark. Organisers have arranged vendors of coffee, waffles, real fruit ice cream and burgers to be onsite, so no one goes hungry.

“We invite you to come along in (non-scary) fancy dress; perhaps as your favourite superhero, maybe as a fairy, or come wearing your wackiest collection of brightly coloured clothes (the crazier the better) and decorate yourself with any glowsticks you have. There will be spot prizes available,” Kelly said.

Anyone planning to attend will need a ticket (which are free) and can be collected from Johnny Fresh, Darfield Library or the Darfield Primary School Office.

“If you have taken tickets, but nearer the time can no longer make it, please return your tickets to one of the above places to give others the opportunity to take them numbers are limited,” she concluded.

The Darfield ITM / Rugby Club Fishing Competition which took place on October 13th and 14th at Lake Benmore was reported to be another great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

There were the normal tall stories of the big one that was thrown back, or the one that was too big to net. However Bryan Thomas eventually caught the biggest fish for the weekend, which he very quickly pointed

out made him the best fisherman ever, having already won the trophy for this feat once before! This story apparently, was heard over and over again during the night!

Keri Judd caught the heaviest fish for a female and was very close to the heaviest top overall fish.

“It was a hard fought win and thoroughly deserved after looking after her three male team mates on the boat,”

Yes readers that’s correct - Tracy Copping won the prestigious, ‘Dick and Trout’ award for the biggest mishap.

Tracy was apparently busy talking away on her cell phone to another angler while her husband was yelling from the back of the boat that they were running out of water. She happily kept on chatting until the motor was bouncing and the boat was stuck while her son is shaking his head in amazement.

She was later heard suggesting that the boat was too big and there wasn’t enough water in the lake!”

On October 9th through to the 12th, New Zealand Synchronised Swimming held their biggest ever national championships, in Invercargill.

The event was attended by 150

swimmers from nine New Zealand clubs and they were joined by two international clubs; New Caledonia and China.

Eleven girls from the Weedons based, Small Strokes Synchro club participated in a range of figures and routines with many returning home with some outstanding results.

The girls swam their best and

were placed well in the New Zealand rankings.

Nellie Manning gained a third placing in the dolphin figure section. While the 13/14/15 year old team, made up of Samantha Asher, Tia Betteridge. Alessandra Ward and Lauren Small achieved a third place in the team routine following their excellent performance.

Last weekend, three members of the Darfield High School Mountain Biking team travelled to Dunedin and participated in the South Island Secondary School Mountain Bike Championship.

The competition, which was hosted by Mountain Biking Otago, was held on October, 14th and 15th at the Signal Hill course and was attended by 270 students, who all had a great time in the mud!

Racing on Saturday consisted of the Down Hill and Super-D races. It was reported that the day started as sunny and dry with everyone enjoying their practice runs on the Downhill course, before the weather turned. Rain, thunder and lighting played havoc halfway though the seeding runs and turned the course into a mud slide.

Sunday dawned sunny again, but the course was still very muddy from the rain the day before, however the weather and the muddy course didn’t slow the Darfield High school students down.

Ethan Rose, rode smart on Saturday morning hitting all his lines and keeping his bike rubber side down to take second place in the Under 15's.

This was the sixth fastest time of the day (U20's through to the U13's) in the downhill racing.

Later in the afternoon with the rain gone and the sun back out Ethan pushed hard in the muddy conditions to take first place in the U15’s and again sixth overall in the Super-D (a blend of cross-country and downhill) race.

away on the final two laps to finish first overall with nearly a two minute lead.

With a second and two firsts for the weekend Ethan was ‘Overall U15's Champion’ for the fourth year in a row.

This was a great start to Ethan’s Mountain Biking season and he will now start to train for the bigger events to come, along with the step-up to U17's at national level. His main focuses will be the North and South Island Champs, plus the National and the Oceania Champs.

Jude Law, of DHS competed in the Downhill race on the Saturday and with the weather working against him pushed hard to come in fifteenth out of th e tw en ty-f ou r st ro ng contenders in the U20’s.

Maia Adams, also of DHS had a successful weekend and came in at second place for both the Downhill race and the Super-D in the U15 girls. The CrossCountry event on Sunday saw Maia come in with a fifth place.

With two seconds and a fifth, Maia come home with a total combined score that placed her second overall in the U15 Girls category.

The Darfield High School team’s effort resulted in them being placed fifteenth out of the sixtyseven teams entered. Overall, fantastic results in tricky conditions.

With school now returned for term four, the ‘20K Either Way’ school bus campaign is under way to raise awareness of safe driving around school buses collecting or dropping off children.

Many Selwyn children in both rural areas and townships throughout the district take the bus to school.

Tony Rabbidge, Rabbidge Managing Director of Torlesse Travel Ltd which operates school buses in Selwyn commented that bus companies are always aware of safety when buses are stopped, but it’s up to everyone driving on the road to ensure that children are safe.

“Our drivers do not open the door until they can see the road is clear on country roads.

However, this does not work so well on busy highways. I drive a bus every day myself and have felt frustrated with speeding vehicles passing us,” he said.

Recent reports suggest that many drivers are ignoring the 20 kilometre speed limit, with

some not making any attempt to slow down at all. Drivers in a hurry who speed around a stationary school bus are a serious danger to school children getting off and on.

The law in New Zealand is for drivers to drive at 20 kilometre per hour in either direction when passing a stationary school bus.

This is the same rule on the open road, or in town.

School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler, Hautler said it’s important for everyone to just slow down.

“I don’t know if drivers are not aware of the law, or if it’s because we’re all in a hurry, but these are potentially your

children, nieces and nephews, or grandchildren”, she added.

“Next time you approach a school bus, take time to slow down, and remember it’s 20K Either Way.”

Up to one hundred young dairy farm workers could be experiencing St Patrick’s Day in Ireland as they begin filling short-term employment gaps on the Emerald Isle. NZ Dairy Careers Consultant and Malvern local, Matt Jones, Jones has hammered out a deal with Irish farming organisations and dairy companies to create opportunities for worker exchanges between Ireland and New Zealand to correspond with each country’s off-season. The main purpose of the exchange is to address the current labour shortage that each country has been experiencing, particularly in the area of dairy farming, while givi ng successful candidates the opportunity to live, learn and earn in dynamic new surroundings.

With herd numbers consistently rising in New Zealand and

Ireland, farm owners now find themselves in a position where they need more employees, which are increasingly difficult to find locally. "We needed to think outside the box to source more skilled farm workers to meet the growing demand for dairy staff in New Zealand. The exchange is the perfect way to supplement each country’s workforce at the times it is needed the most. Ireland and New Zealand have both used various methods to attract domestic workers, but it has become abundantly clear from the engagement that I've had with farmers and businesses, that neither country has the capacity to fill farming jobs with local labour,” Matt added.

NZ Dairy Careers assist with all of the paperwork to ensure a smooth transition and will work with candidates every step of the way. Upon arrival in Ireland, workers will be met and looked after by dairy farming partners based over there.

A wage of €10.00 - €12.00 (approximately $16.50 $19.80) per hour is expected to be paid to New Zealand workers, with farm managers commanding more.
