Gallipoli Oaks Project Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the first Battle of Paschanedaele, New Zealand’s darkest day

Thursday 12th October - 2pm At the Sheffield/Waddington Cenotaph.

Sheffield Primary School will lead singing & their Kapa Haka group will perform.

Afternoon tea at Sheffield School on behalf of the Sheffield Waddington Township Committee.

It was hard work getting through some of the hazards.

After having to postpone this year’s Mud Plug twice due to the wet weather and then all the rain that the Malvern area had last week the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade couldn’t help but think that the fundraising Mud Plug 4x4 event

was going to have to be cancelled.

However with the support from the events venue land owner, Derek Bull and a lot of persuasion it was decided to run the event.

Local residents can enjoy paintings and drawings of native plants from the district at the Selwyn Gallery Darfield from September 27th until October 26th. This exhibit is part of a larger body of work called the ‘Canterbury Plains Florilegium’, an illustrated record of indigenous plants.

In modern terms the word florilegium means a collection of botanically correct illustrations of plants, in this case from Riccarton Bush and the Canterbury Plains. The national significance of Riccarton Bush makes this exhibition important because it is the sole remnant of Kahikatea flood plain forest in Canterbury.

“Part of our interest in this exhibit is that botanical art can act as the interface between art and science. It gives viewers an

aesthetic experience and also educates them about the botanical subjects on display,” explained Malvern Community Arts Council Chair, Philip Baldwin.

The art works on exhibit were created by members of the Botanical Art Society of New Zealand from 2010 to 2013, and were created to help celebrate the 150th birthday of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

The aim of the not-for-profit Botanical Art Society of New Zealand is to ‘foster and promote botanical art and to stimulate interest in plants, conservation, horticulture, and the natural environment.’ The NZ membership ranges from full -time practising artists, through to passionate amateurs.

The Kirwee Community Church has the privilege of hosting Dr Cecil Peasley from Port Elizabeth, South Africa on Thursday, October 5th.

Dr Peasley is a husband, father, grandfather, pastor, preacher, teacher and trainer/ mentor, and he brings a wealth of practical experience to New Zealand. He also serves as a honorary executive director of the South African Association of Evangelists from 2000 to 2013 and is a world renowned international communicator.

Dr Peasley is currently in New Zealand speaking at mens groups, church services and other organised programs

and he will be sharing his recent experiences in Africa and how the Christian faith is transforming lives and communities when he speaks in Kirwee.

Dr Peasley believes ‘The average person is caught between two thieves; the regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow.

Consequently, we cannot enjoy today.

Local boy, Georgi Pander, recently competed in the South Island Secondary School Ski and Snowboard Champs held at Cadrona Ski Area on September, 16th and 17th. He attended the event representing Darfield High School (DHS) in the Giant Slalom (GS) and Ski Gravity Cross events.

The South Island Ski Champs is an inter-schools team competition for secondary schools throughout the South Island that have qualified from their regional champs.

Georgi gained his place at the South Island Ski Champs when he took out first place for the GS ski race at the Canterbury Secondary School competition, which was the first time in twenty-four years for DHS. This win qualified him for the South Island Ski Champs which was held in Wanaka for the two days.

At the end of day one Georgi finished in second place, having only been beaten by 0.05 seconds to the top honour.

Day two saw Georgi take out a credible third placing after four heats in the skier cross event in what can only be described as whiteout conditions. This was a huge feat for Georgi especially as this was his first attempt at the skier cross style, which is where four competitors start at the same time in a race to the bottom.

with the help of Gavin Chalk, the ski coordinator at DHS and exstudent from DHS, Jason Collins, who has taken on the role of Ski School director.

Georgi is looking to continue his career in the snow industry and tourism by shifting country’s this summer to enjoy Japan’s winter and the deep powder of the Miyoko and make the most of the ski competitions there.

People who live and work on the land manage a set of challenges including long working hours, extreme weather events, isolation, financial pressures and the stress of being 24/7 on-farm. These factors can affect mental wellbeing.

Coming to Darfield on October, 11th is a GoodYarn Workshop to assist with enabling farming communities to talk about mental health.

“To take care of yourself, and be able to help others, one of the best things you can do is talk,” said the GoodYarn facilitators, Bridget Frame and Gayle Litchfield.

Litchfield GoodYarn is a hands-on workshop to give those who attend, the practical tools, confidence and understanding of mental illness and wellness, so they can talk to people in rural communities about mental health. The Workshop is free to attend and focusses on rural issues, and is especially aimed at rural professionals, farmers and rural community members.

I have completed various mental health courses over my time and so I am now very glad to have the opportunity to work alongside Bridget to deliver this workshop. I feel there is a great need in our rural community for this kind of information and I look forward to being able to make a difference," she concluded.

Federated Farmers, DairyNZ, Rural Support, Dairy Women’s Network, Beef and Lamb and Rural Women, and was the 2016 Category Winner at Australia and New Zealand Mental Health Service Awards.

Their programme was developed by the WellSouth Primary Health Network in Otago and Southland, in consultation with farmers, Rural Support Trusts, farming bodies and health agencies.

Workshops, like the one to be held in Darfield, take two and a half hours and are usually for groups of between ten and twenty participants. The topics covered include: tips for maintaining mental wellbeing; how to recognise the signs of stress and common mental health problems; practical tools to help initiate a conversation if concerned about someone and how to access the right support services.

The St Pauls Parish of West Melton are currently busy organising a Garden Tour to be held on Sunday, November 12th from 12.00pm to 4.30pm.

The afternoon will feature ten beautiful gardens located in the West Melton area. Organiser Amanda Haywood said “there will be a diverse range of gardens on display, from small town-sized gardens through to medium and larger sized gardens.”

All of the gardens selected for the tour showcase the variety of plants that grow well in the Selwyn area, and they will be a great inspiration for local

gardeners.

There will be an opportunity for visitors to rest up and enjoy some Devonshire teas which will be available at one of the garden locations, and there will also be the chance to visit a plant stall featuring Irises, Hostas, fruit trees and a variety of perennials, all at bargain prices for visitors to buy.

November is a fabulous time to view gardens, as most roses, peonies and irises are in full flower and are showcasing wonderful displays of colour before the heat of summer arrives. So the timing is perfect for a great afternoon of

From Labour Day (Monday, October 23rd 2017), the four Selwyn District Libraries will begin a six-month trial of new opening hours.

The new trial hours have been developed in response to residents’ requests for improved access to library services.

Last year the libraries team conducted surveys and assessed usage and peak times for each of the four libraries, at Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston and Lincoln, to assess community need.

Further consultation was then carried out earlier this year as part of the draft Annual Plan.

Selwyn District Libraries Manager, Vicki Carlyon said public feedback supported the idea of extended hours.

“Each of the four libraries have unique proposed hours.

This will enable greater access to library services at times convenient to residents throughout Selwyn.”

With library hours extending into Saturday afternoons,

programmes and activities will be available in the weekends as well as during the week.

Another benefit to the new hours is that Service Centres at Lincoln, Leeston and Darfield will be available on Saturday mornings until midday.

The trial hours also include at least one extended evening per week to allow access after business hours.

The first Saturday of the new trial hours, on October 28th will include exciting launch events.

Nearly 75% of Selwyn residents acknowledge the high risk involved in texting while driving - when drivers focus on their phone, they’re not focused on the road.

That’s one of the findings of a recent survey carried out by Selwyn District Council, which is getting on board with the nationwide Drive Phone Free campaign.

The campaign aims to increase driver awareness that talking on the phone, texting or even checking a mobile phone while driving puts them and other road users at risk.

With cellphones now a large part of many people’s lives it can be difficult to ignore them when driving, however it is important to remember to put them away.

Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning said it’s not just ourselves we have to think about when driving.

“We can all do our part in increasing road safety by not using phones in any way when

driving, but we should also encourage others to do the s a m e. W e a l l ho l d a responsibility to provide a good example for younger passengers by choosing to ignore our phones or turning them off when driving,” she said.

In November 2009 a law was introduced making it illegal to use mobile phones while driving. This includes making, receiving or terminating a phone call, creating, sending or even reading a text or email and creating, sending or viewing a video message.

Hands-free devices are often considered as a solution to

minimise the risk of driver distraction. While they do decrease the visual risk (taking drivers’ eyes off the road) and manual risk (taking drivers’ hands off the wheel) they don’t minimise cognitive distraction meaning drivers’ minds are not focused on the road.

The council recommends keeping an eye on their Facebook page over the next month for weekly posts and prizes to be won to encourage drivers to drive phone free. Pick up your free cell phone screen cleaner from a Council Library and Service Centre or from a rural garage.

Over a hundred years ago a “Lady Golfer”, Alexander Boyle, Boyle of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club gave a trophy for which all Ladies Golf Clubs in the Canterbury area could challenge.

Much has changed since that time, including the fact that Ladies’ Golf is now Women's Golf but the thrill of the challenge has not!

The format is similar to the Ranfurly Shield in that the holder faces challenges which they meet on their own course until such time a challenger succeeds. There are five players in the team with tradition stating that the highest handicapped player starts first, which results in tension building so that the top ranked pair conclude the challenge while the rest of the team, plus supportive caddies, surround the last green awaiting the last tense putt.

(This rarely happens as the individual matches often finish before the last hole!).

Rawhiti had fought off seventeen challenges before faced with the Greendale Stalwarts.

Leading the Greendale team was Dale Macdonald, fresh from winning her twenty-first consecutive Greendale Senior championship, who played steadily to beat a big hitting but wayward opponent on the eighteenth green, though before the drama on the course had played out the result had been decided earlier with Greendale winning three of the other four matches!

Crissie Banks, also a mighty hitter had won her match two up and one to play some minutes earlier. On the sixteenth hole a superb iron shot to the green on a testing par three hole had set up her charge to the finish. Jo Johnson, a very promising relative new comer to golf, had a tough tussle at number three but just came up short, leaving the experienced four and five players, Jan Redfern and Kath A d a m s t o e s t ab l i s h a comfortable two nil lead coming into the last stages.

Their wins were four and three and three and two respectively.

Thus the cup came to Greendale, four matches to one.

Winners of the Boyle Cup 2017. of the Boyle Cup is that players are “allowed” to have caddies and this adds to the excitement of the match as information is passed through the caddies on progress in the matches. It also strengthens team spirit to have such a strong supportive group sharing the “invasion” of the other club. The team members were very grateful to the ladies who filled these roles.

2018 season will see the Greendale team face six new challengers, who will be decided early in the next season with a ballot from those who apply.

Greendale last held the cup in 2012, for two challenges before losing it to neighbour Waimakariri. The club hopes its tenure will be a little longer next time, but what is sure is that the club will enjoy the victory in the meantime.

Last week Year 7 & 8 students from a number of local schools travelled to a range of locations through out the Selwyn District to participate in the Koru Games which was run from September, 19th to 21st.

The Koru Games is a multi-day, multi-sport tournament for Year 7 & 8 students attending South Island schools and was created

by Selwyn Sport Trust. Last year alone more than 4000 plus students participated in the competition.

This year the sports included in the tournament were Badminton, Basketball, Boccia (for physically impaired athletes), Football,

Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Table Tennis, Tennis, Touch and Volleyball.

While competition is acknowledged as an inherent part of the games, a strong fair play attitude underpins all competitions and playing within the spirit of the games is a large part of the tournament and what the children learn while participating.

West Melton School sent a number of students to participate in the lawn bowls as well as the football. The students showed great determination and a competitive spirit within their events and two of their students, Maia C and Hailey B took home a bronze medal in

the lawn bowls in the mix team.

Darfield High School (DHS) also brought home some fantastic results with the girls netball team making it to the finals and managing to place second against Queenspark High, with a score of 20-10.

DHS boys rugby sevens also played hard and fair, they narrowly lost the semi final which placed them third over-all, with a winning score of 40-0 against Rolleston, not an easy feat with so many schools competing in the competition.

The three day tournament was another success and this years Year 7’s are looking forward to next year and getting another chance in Year 8 to attend the tournament.

On Sunday, September 24th Malvern School of Music (MSM) students, family, and friends gathered for the annual MSM concert in the Darfield High School Hall.

This years concert was extra special as not only was MSM celebrating the students musical accomplishments but also celebrated MSM teaching music in the area for thirty years.

The event was made even more special with the attendance of Judy Bellingham and Jill Stevenson, two founders of the school, along with several original board members. So many hard working and talented people have contributed to the thirty years of success of the MSM, and it was wonderful to recognise where MSM began

and how far it has come.

The annual demonstration concert provided the opportunity for small groups and soloists to perform, showing the range of skills for violins, viola, cellos, guitars, vocals, keyboards, saxophone, recorder and drums.

The orchestra, which consists of beginning to advanced players, was conducted by Darfield High School Music H ead of Department, Rachel Balchin.

This year the Committee decided to demonstrate that adults are welcome to learn at MSM as well, forming a beginners’ ukulele group in order to play at the concert.

The school is planning to arrange minibus trips to concerts in Christchurch for music lovers from the Malvern area. Many people find it difficult to get into town in the evenings for concerts, so this is a new venture for the MSM. Storytelling Schools The Malvern Cluster was successful in applying for funding for a wri ng ini a ve to improve achievement in wri ng across our schools.

Led by Nick PraN from Sheffield School who was supported by a change management team, data on Yr 3-8 student wri ng was collated from schools across the cluster and analysed in depth by the team supported by sta s cal analysis experts from the Ministry of Educa on.

Analysis of the wri ng highlighted two significant areas of weakness in the confident use of vocabulary and ideas in wri ng.

As part of a cluster wide ini a ve to address these issues, we have engaged Liz Swanson a former Resource Teacher of Literacy to introduce Storytelling Schools to Malvern Schools.

Liz had been inves ga ng ways to improve student achievement in wri ng and came across this method, which was introduced to schools in Oxfordshire England and has met with great success.

Liz introduced the method to a cluster of Christchurch schools eighteen months ago and the schools are very excited by the improvements seen in this short me.

Recently teachers from our early childhood, primary and secondary centres gave up a Saturday to aNend the first Storytelling workshop led by Liz at Sheffield School.

This will be followed by 5 aOer school workshops to help teachers introduce the programme to their classes and to teachers at their schools.

It is hoped from here a group of teachers will be trained as “experts” who will be able to model how to effec vely use this method in both their own schools and throughout the Cluster.

Our Vision: is to strengthen each learning providers’ ability to ensure that every child can reach their poten al in Malvern. The following is our aspira onal vision statement: Belonging to Malvern/Contribu ng to Society/To support all Malvern learners along their learning journey.

A Storytelling School In a Storytelling School all children learn to be storytellers as a way of learning. The basic idea is like this. By learning to tell stories to others we naturally learn several things at the same me: language, communica on and social skills, story content.

There is something about learning to tell a story from memory which requires a deeper rela onship with the story and its content than can be achieved by simply hearing, reading or re-wri ng it. This is because, in order to be able to tell the story well, the storyteller needs to clearly understand the characters, se ng and detail of the story so that it can be conveyed to others. These stories are learned to teach literacy (speaking, listening, reading and wri ng) as well as topic content. Stories can include literary stories, history stories and science stories. Wri ng happens once a story or non-fic on piece has been rehearsed and developed orally as a performance piece. This enables the language to be learned in a natural and flexible way before any wri ng occurs. When the child gets to the wri ng stage they already have lots of language and plot ideas to draw on so the amount and quality of wri ng naturally goes up.

On Wednesday, September 20th, West Melton School Kapa Haka group performed at the site of the new West Melton Community and Recreation Centre as part of the site blessing before the building begins on the new Centre. Justin Tipa of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu began with a karakia followed by the kapa haka performance. In attendance was Amy Adams MP, Bruce Russell from the Community Board and Denise Sheet from Taumutu Marae.

The site of the new West Melton Community and Recreation Centre was blessed on Wednesday, September 20th.

The blessing ceremony began with a Karakia by Justin Tipa of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, followed by a Kapa Haka performance by West Melton School pupils.

Construction of the new community and recreation centre is expected to begin at the end of September and take about eleven months to complete.

West Melton Community and Recreation Centre Committee chair, Bruce Russell, Russell said the

blessing was an opportunity for the community to celebrate the hard work that has gone in to making the new facility a reality.

“We received a Rata Foundation grant of $250,000, the community itself raised $120,000 towards the new facility and I’m really proud of the way West Melton residents got behind this project and helped this four-year project come to fruition.

“The Committee is absolutely delighted to see construction begin on a modern facility that our growing community deserves to have,” he added.

Selwyn District Council is looking for volunteers to join a new Selwyn Civil Defence Response Team.

The response team will provide Council with additional capability during an emergency to help with evacuations, sandbagging, light rescue, reconnaissance, cordon management and community needs assessment.

People can register their interest to be part of the response team at an information evening which will be held at the Selwyn District Council offices in Rolleston on Wednesday, October 18, 7pm.

Council Emergency Management Team Leader, Ryan O’Rourke, O’Rourke said the Council is on the lookout for people with a background in rescue, but also for those who are enthusiastic about serving their community and who are willing to commit to the required training.

“We need people who can operate in physically and mentally challenging environments within a small team. They must also have excellent communication skills and be able to follow instructions,” Ryan said.

The volunteers will be trained in emergency management, first aid, light rescue, operating fourwheel-drive vehicles, radio communications and flood response.

Volunteers must have a full car drivers licence and be able to commit to weekly-evening and monthly-weekend training activities.

There are a number of other

response teams already operating in Canterbury which have responded to major Civil Defence emergencies including the Christchurch Earthquake, the Kaikoura/Hurunui Earthquake, the Port Hills Fires and numerous flood events.

We recently held our Spring Show on a cold and wet day, but this did not deter members from aNending and bringing along to the Show tables a stunning range of exhibits. Despite the recent poor weather, the blooms were of a high standard and the judges from Broadfield Garden Club had their work cut out making their decisions. They commented that they thought some of the entries were glass house grown they were of such a high standard. Awards were presented to Georgie Eaves (premier daffodil), Jackie Hill (premier bloom), Carol Williams (cut flowers), Doreen Moore (decora ve).

A good speaker is a must at Show me and we were delighted to welcome Alannah Connor from the Twisted Bunch florist shop here in Darfield. Alannah is a favourite with our members, mainly due to her friendly manner, as well as her skill at floral work.

Alannah demonstrated assembling an arrangement in a box and a simple table display. Well she makes it look so simple, but her work is anything but, being beau fully constructed and with an eye to excep onal colour.

Orchids, hellebores, roses and foliage coming together in two eye catching pieces. She kindly donated the two arrangements to the Club and two lucky ladies went home with their winnings. Thank you Alannah for sparing the me to come and visit with us. Let us hope the weather bucks up a bit so that we can spend more me in our gardens enjoying all that this wonderful season brings.

The Sheffield Garden Club welcomed Mrs Jocelyn Thompson and her husband to our mee ng on September, 5th at Saint Ambrose Hall.

Jocelyn was enjoyed by everyone who aNended the mee ng, as she was very entertaining. She provided the group with a very interes ng and informa ve me, talking about her experience as a floral judge. Jocelyn also gave us a few ps and tricks and made us aware of the sort of things that the judges look for when judging in a compe on.

We are all hopeful that these snippets of informa on will stand us in good steed for next years challenges at the local A & P shows around the district. I learnt some helpful ps while I accompanied Jocelyn during this years show here in Sheffield.

We are hoping everyone is looking forward to our bus trip to Geraldine on October, 3rd? This ou ng is looking like it will be an interes ng day visi ng some new territory. “It was a great decision, as we could not have got a better day,” Sheffield Vounlteer Fire Brigade’s Chief, Nev Croy said.

The day dawned sunny and dry and was the perfect conditions for such an event.

It was estimated around 2000 people come through the gate on the day to enjoy the activities, making the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade Mud Plug one of the biggest spectator attended 4x4 events in the South Island.

Some entrants take the sport very seriously with one competitor at the event having invested $130.000 into his buggy. The event had a full field of competitors this year with forty-one entries, which is the most the organisers can include, with the furthest travelled competitors coming from Nelson and Dunedin.

The organisers opened the course up more this year which the competitors enjoyed.

The day was not without drama with three vehicles tipping over and with one of which tipping over twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. The only injury was to his pride and a bit of damage to his truck.

The tractor and digger drivers were keep busy towing some competitors through the hazards, which provided great entertainment for the spectators.

The trade sites all had a very successful days with both sales and orders, so much so that some have already booked a space for the upcoming Wings and Wheels event in 2018.

The food sites also had a fantastic day selling out of hot food late in the afternoon. Both Mr Whippy and the Coffee Man were keep equally as busy all day long meaning that it was a successful day for all.

The manufactories class section and overall winner was Mr and Mrs Andrew Satherley from Nelson, driving in his Jeep Wrangler. Andrew has won this event three times in succession making him a hot favourite each year.

Second place went to Adam Wardle, Wardle and third place went to Brock Welsh.

Welsh Competition was strong in the buggy class, with first place going to Nathan Hammond, Hammond second place to Andy Reeves, and third to Troy Reed.

Applications are now open for pupils from local secondary schools to apply for Selwyn District Council tertiary scholarships.

The Council awards a total of six scholarships each year, to two pupils in year 12 or 13 at Darfield High School, Ellesmere College and Lincoln High School.

The scholarship offers $3,000 to each student, assisting them to take up further education at a university, polytechnic or accredited state or private institution, on a full-time course of study which benefits the wider community.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the Council is pleased to be able to support young leaders in Selwyn.

"The scholarship programme is a really practical way that the Council can encourage students to pursue their education opportunities,” he said. "It’s exciting to be able to help them along their learning journey, knowing their families and community will also benefit in the long term."

Applicants are judged on their

contribution to the school and community, their attitude and academic ability. Decisions on applications are made by a panel including the relevant School Principal (or their representative) and two Council representatives - either local ward Councillors or a ward Councillor and the Chair of the local community board.

Applicants must be New Zealand cit i z en s, o r p e rm a n e nt residents, who live in Selwyn.

recipients were Hannah Long and Duncan Finalyson from Lincoln High School, Cassian Duthie and Brionne Fleming from Ellesmere College and Emily De Rooy and Kathryn Barnhill from Darfield High School.

Selwyn District Council held its final ‘on the road’ meeting for 2017 at the newly-opened Dunsandel Community Centre on Wednesday, September 13th.

The meeting began with presentations on local issues from Ellesmere ward committees including the Dunsandel Community Centre Committee and the Leeston Community Committee. Representatives from the Selwyn Youth Council also presented an update on their activities.

Decisions made by the Council included: Public Places Bylaw 2017 and Policy on Commercial Activities and Events in Public Places The Council adopted the draft Public Places Bylaw 2017 and the Policy on Commercial Activities and Events in Public Places 2017, to go out for public consultation. The bylaw and policy are proposed in response to the increasing number of mobile traders, particularly food vans, seeking to operate in the district especially during the summer months. The policy would provide guidance as to the types

of activities permitted and establish a structure around approval processes and fees.

Consultation is expected to open in October.

Transport linkage in Lincoln The Council has approved budget provision of $1.4 million, to be funded from development contributions, for the co n stru ctio n o f a transportation/service linkage from Carnaveron Drive to Birchs Road, Lincoln. This provision will provide for the construction of a 260m section of link road including an arterial intersection with Birchs Road and a roundabout that will connect to the existing end of Carnaveron Drive. The development is part of plans to cater for future subdivision development of the adjoining land.

Zone water management committees Mayor Sam Broughton was appointed to serve on the appointment panels for new community members on the Selwyn Waihora and Christchurch West Melton Zone Water Management Committees.

Approval was given for a Plan Change 49, which rezones two rural properties along the western edge of Tai Tapu Township from a Rural (Inner Plains) to Living 3 zone. The change, which was recommended by an independent commissioner, will accommodate approximately sixteen rural residential households with lot sizes generally between 2,700m2 and 8,500m2.

Disposal of surplus reserves The Council has approved proceeding with a process to dispose of 37 rural reserves which are no longer required for Council purposes. The reserves will be disposed of by the Crown via the Department o f Conservation. The Council will continue to manage the reserves until they are disposed of. Proceeds from the disposal of these reserves will be used fo r th e acq u is it io n o r development of recreation or amenity reserves for the benefit of the local community.

Malvern Community Board’s recent meeting on September, 25th was held in the Darfield Library and Service Centre.

At the meeting Board Members raised a number of issues from the meetings they attended in the past month, including maintenance matters; progress on the Rewi Alley celebration; and whether Community Committees have the ability to make submissions on bylaws on behalf of their communities. This issue was also raised during the public forum part of the recent Council meeting, held in the Dunsandel Hall.

Board Members received a presentation and demonstration on the use of a defibrillator and on another Health and Safety matter, received information about the first sentencing under the new legislation in a case where a worker lost most of his hand when it was dragged into a machine recycling plastic.

We allocated a Discretionary Fund grant to the Darfield/Malvern District Menz Shed, an initiative which started in early June 2017.

The Menz Shed has now secured a suitable building for their meetings and we look forward to receiving feedback from this enterprise which will benefit men from Darfield and surrounding areas. A Discretionary Fund grant was also allocated to the Darfield Smallbore Rifle Club to attend a shooting championship.
