Last Wednesday, September 13th, 103 young skiers from schools in the Selwyn area and further afield took part in the annual Primary and Intermediate Schools Local Derby at Porters Ski Area.

The 2017 Derby attracted the biggest number of skiers to race in the event since it began.

Participating schools from as far afield as Cust and Dunsandel enjoyed great skiing and weather conditions on the mountain.

Porters snow sports staff set an excellent course for the students who ranged from year one, through to year eight.

The event also attracted many enthusiastic parents, teachers and supporters and generated a carnival atmosphere at the ski area.

The Derby is a team event, in which each of the four team members complete two runs with the three fastest combined times becoming the team’s overall time.

The results show that many of

the schools taking part were on the podium, collecting medals from Porters and very generous prizes from local sponsor Bobo Products of Darfield. Every skier also received a personalised certificate of participation.

“It is an event which is keenly anticipated and contested,” said Uli Dinsenbacher, Dinsenbacher General Manager of Porters Ski Area, “and it is great for us to see the progress children make and the fun it brings them and their families.”

Springfield School and Darfield High School dominated the results as the overall fastest teams and individuals, their weekly skiing programmes paying dividends in this event.

Saturday, October 14th will see award-winning singer and songwriter Mel Parsons performing at the Hororata Hall.

Mel has just kicked off her double-bill ‘Across the Ditch’ tour, paired with Australian musician Liz Stringer.

Stringer The tour started in Adelaide, and will take in eighteen shows across Australia and New Zealand over the coming weeks, with Hororata the last stop on October 14th.

Mel and Liz will be sharing songs from their back catalogues, along with select Kiwi and Aussie favourites that have helped shape them as artists. Both performers have distinctive voices, a story-telling bent and a dry humour that will have audiences laughing and crying, not necessarily in that order!

Mel is well known to New Zealand audiences, touring full time from international festivals to woolsheds in Selwyn’s own backyard, and has her third critically acclaimed album under her belt. Having last performed

The Darfield Market will be joining the Fair again this year, and bringing their assortment of vegetables, food and crafts to this annual celebration of the arrival of Spring in Malvern.

The array of home baking and

tasty treats on the bake table, as well as preserves, generally don’t get much of a chance to linger for long on display. Add to this the usual tempting aroma of onions, hamburger patties and sausages on the BBQ outside and it’s a definite enticement.

Organisers comment that donations to the White Elephant stall, or used book stall, are still most welcome. These can be dropped off at Trinity Church by Thursday, September 28th in advance of the opening on Saturday, September 30th.

Following their September 12th meeting, and after much discussion, the Malvern Community Board are hoping to again hold a Christmas in the Park event in Darfield. This is planned for Sunday, December 10th.

“Community Board members listened to comments from the general public and intend to present an event that is fun, enjoyable and embodies all that the festive season has to offer,” said Board Chair Jenny Gallagher.

Gallagher “While there’s no doubt that Malvern has in its midst a huge depth of talent, it was decided to shy away from the ‘on-stage, talent-quest’ type of presentation and aim more for the ‘Christmas of by-gone days’ style of entertainment.”

Organisers are now calling for expressions of interest from those with Christmas themed stalls, they envisage there’ll be food aplenty, traditional lolly scramble, entertainment from Shad Rutherford and the crazy bikes of Pedalmania. But more to the point there’ll be Christmas carols (and everyone enjoys singing along to those) and no festive event would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus. To further encourage the spirit of Christmas a ‘giving tree’ will be on site to accept gifts (new or good quality second-hand) for distribution to those less fortunate, who may well be facing Christmas without much to look forward to.

Another change to the format is the timing - the event often plagued in the past by evening, bone-chilling, winds and occasional rain, will take place at 3pm in the afternoon, while day-time temperatures are still in existence (a wet weather, plan B has also been put in place). Rather than a passive audience type of event, organisers hope to get at least the youngsters involved with games, races and tug o’ wars, while adults will find there are still competitions for the best decorations etc. It’s an opportunity to come together as a community, bring a picnic (or partake of goodies from the various vendors), enjoy a

Sheffield School’s Physical Education Leadership Group (PELG) are currently raising funds for sports programmes and equipment at the School, as well as for World Vision, in the form of a Silent Auction.

The group which consists of fifteen year four, five and six students meet regularly with the aim of encouraging health and physical activity at Sheffield School, and in the wider community.

The group, with the support of Sheffield School teacher Claire Brazier, Brazier decided to run the silent auction for the 2017 All Blacks jersey from the Lions 2017 Series. The jersey has been signed by the All Black players in the series, as well as the managers and coaches.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 13th, students from Glentunnel School headed out into the community to collect rubbish as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean Up Week 2017.

The students targeted the area around the School, domain, golf course and camp ground. They were surprised at the amount of rubbish and recycling that was collected.

Many of the students were heard to be asking about why people would dump the rubbish all around their community.

"I thought it was wonderful having the whole school clean up our community," Dion Stechmann, Stechmann principal of Glentunnel School said.

"We were very surprised about what we found and how much rubbish there was,” said students from Room 3.

Tickets for 2017’s Methven and Foothills House and Garden Tour go on sale soon with the organisers promising a range of new and exciting properties to discover.

The tour takes place on Saturday, November 11th, beginning at 10am and is the third annual House and Garden tour to fundraise for Methven Care Trust. The Trust is the group spearheading a project to replace Methven House with a new purpose-built rest home within Camrose Estate. Their aim, by the provision of a new resthome, is to allow Methven locals and those from the surrounding area, an opportunity to continue to live in the community they love, as they age.

The Tour will see nine properties open for viewing, the same number as last year, with a new attraction being a cluster in the countryside around historic Barrhill Village.

With these varying locations vehicles are required to get around the Tour.

On a quirky note, and for gin drinkers, there is the three bedroom farmer’s home, built five years ago, that is sure to generate a smile. A painting of a Bombay Sapphire bottle of gin, given as a gift to the owner, was their inspiration for the blue kitchen. Having also acquired the original Methven BNZ’s foyer doors prior to their build, it was inevitable these would feature as a truly inspiring entrance. Visitors will be

rewarded with assorted classic vehicles and stationary engines on display, a part of the owner’s private collection.

Another of the rural properties features history detailing back to the mid 1800’s, but the current home was built in 1931.

However evidence of its earlier existence has been retained in the original leadlight glass windows and wooden panelling.

The garden consists of a formal area with buxus, along with rambling areas and a garden path. The vegetable garden boasts roses and lavender and fruit trees on its perimeter. A museum on site will be open on the day.

Devonshire teas will be offered again by Methven House staff at one of the properties and raffles will also be available, (organisers suggest bringing plenty of coins!).

Volunteers are now being sought for management of the properties on the day.

Tickets for the event go on sale in early October and Tour maps are forwarded via email the week prior to the event.

National’s blue dominated the main street of Darfield on Wednesday, September 13th when the Party’s supporters and local Selwyn MP Amy Adams, Adams along with Gerry Brownlee, Brownlee MP Ilam came to town in their magnificent, signwritten bus.

With placards aplenty the group stationed themselves under the spring cherry blossom on South Terrace, waving to locals and passersby. Vehicles tooted, folk acknowledged them and Amy was more than happy to chat to anyone who wished to talk. With voting already underway and polling day this Saturday, this was a great opportunity for an impromptu ‘meet-the-candidate’.

The Hororata Highland Games Amateur heavy training day, held September 9th, at the H ororata Domain, saw emerging athletes hone their skills in the traditional Scottish heavy athletic disciplines which included caber toss, hammer throw, weight for distance, stone put and sheaf toss.

Coach, eighteen times New Zealand Highland Heavy Events Champion, Pat Hellier commented, “I am passionate about Highland Games. It is a sport which has taken me all around the world, it has a huge amount of camaraderie with competitors supporting each other and I am passionate about helping athletes find their way into this sport.

“The Hororata Highland Games is leading the way in introducing and fostering people into the sport. The programme the event has developed, right from the Junior Warriors and the Have-A-Go events, to the Gough CAT Amateur Men’s/Women’s Championships and Oceania Heavyweight Championship, is world class. The competitions get better and better each year and I am looking forward to the 11th of November where we will have some of the best Highland Games athletes go head to head.

must attend competition for not just the heavy athletes, but Pipers and Drummers, Pipe Bands, Highland Dancers and Tug O’ War teams.”

Entries opened for all competitive events on September 1st and will close on October 23rd. This year the event will host two South Island and six Canterbury West Coast Highland Dancing Championships. This is a nod from the Piping and Dancing Associations that the Hororata Highland Games is staging quality competitions.

"Every year the Hororata Highland Games committee looks for ways to elevate the contests. We want to ensure we stage the best competitions, which is why we invest in quality medals, stunning trophies hand crafted by local artist Lorraine Natusch, Natusch top judges and offer great prize money,” commented Event Manager, Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll “Entries are already rolling in and we are expecting to have a high number of competitors, so much so we have extended the programme to finish later this year. We have had a number of enquiries from Pipe Bands outside of Canterbury and are hopeful some of them may attend which will make for a huge massed bands’ march at the Closing Ceremony.”

Entries are also open for the team events including the Southfuels Tug O’ War and Harraways Junior Warriors.

Junior Warriors is an event for 8 -14 years olds in which they compete as a team of four in a light version of Highland Games events including caber toss, farmers’ walk, stone put and new this year, the Junior Hororata Stones. There are some great prizes for the winning team’s school and each competitor.

Cross Unfortunately for me, my Malvern team that I hoped to play in had to withdraw from the competition at the last minute and I was unable to choose to play for any Club due to the late withdrawal. Fortunately for me, I chose to give something back to the Malvern Club and elected to coach the Malvern Monkeys (a year 5 and 6 girls’ 6-aside team) with the help of Dallas Molloy.

Molloy For a team that came together for the first time this year, I have seen them improve

vastly from a group of individuals, some who didn’t even know how to hold a hockey stick let alone know where to stand, to a team of keen and goal-scoring players with smiles on their faces.

Although we haven’t won games, we have come a very long way and I am sure the parents will join with me in saying how much these girls have come together so well as a team. Look out next year Malvern Monkeys will be a team to be reckoned with!

MALVERN MEN'S TEAM The Malvern men have had a good overall season with a lot of challenges and learning curves. They enjoyed a strong opposition from the other men's teams that they had not

experienced in a while. This has driven their players to knuckle down and do better against this strong opposition. They are hoping that next year the team can draw on more local talent to build up an even stronger team

JUNIOR KWIK STICKS GIRLS 66-ASIDE What a season for the Malvern Magics! The year 7 and 8 six aside started well in Division 2 with a 12 - 1 win and followed that up with excellent performances, remaining top of the table and only losing one g a m e b e f o r e ac h i e v i n g promotion to Division 1. The division 1 campaign started well, with a 7 - 0 win and ended with the Magics winning the Minor Premiership by finishing top after the regular pool play ended!

The girls played some really

attractive hockey, lots of good passing and getting forward well to create a myriad of scoring opportunities. Scoring 65 goals during the regular season and only conceding 17 was testament to the attacking prowess and gritty defence of the team.

The girls’ attitude throughout was excellent and they enjoyed some great laughs along the way. Preparations for a couple of tournaments are now underway, one in September and one in October.

JUNIOR KWIK STICKS BOYS 66-ASIDE The Malvern Minions Kwik Sticks Boys 6 aside team had a great season. Keen players they practised every Wednesday and their hard work was rewarded when they made the cut off for Division 1. The Minions were a much younger

team than others in the Year 78 competition with players in it from years 4 and 6 making up the numbers. They held their own well, finishing the season in fifth. The younger team members are already planning for next year.

To the Editors: There is an ancient proverb: "Beware of those who seek power, for they seek power because of a defect in their character." We should think on this. We may say there is some truth to this, even including those who are political dogooders, who want to remake the world in their own image which may not be your image or my image. We employ our politicians to serve us, yet we only have a partial democracy.

The goal really is a fair, equal, good, orderly society.

Democracy at this stage in our societal evolution is the means to that. So, if our partial democracy is not properly working as a means, we could say a fuller, more direct democracy, is a better means.

The boys, aged fourteen to eighteen years old, displayed some fantastic talent and skill while playing four very strong games and going on to emerge as winners of the tournament.

In both the semi-final and the final, they played against teams equally as strong as they were; however, with determination and persistence, they brought forth a win in both games.

“I was very proud of how the boys took ownership of their achievement, their patience during every game and the way they took the game to the opposition,” commented coach George Ridgen.

Ridgen The team had

been training tirelessly with coaches George and Michael Millar and their dedication to training certainly paid off.

“The hard work the boys put in over the past year is admirable, and they thoroughly deserved to come away with the win,” Michael added.

Teacher and team manager, Julia Watherston, Watherston also travelled with them, as well as a previous parent of the School, Melissa Jebson.

Jebson They gave up their valuable time to organise the team and keep the boys on track, while making sure everyone was fed and well looked after. Melissa, who gave

up a full week of her time, was particularly appreciated. Julia, George and Michael all recognise the value of Melissa’s assistance as, without parental support, it would have been considerably more difficult to attend a tournament such as this.

The results for the games were: Day 1: vs McKenzie College won 8-0 Day 2: vs Tokomairiro HS - won 4-0 Day 3 - Semi Finals: vs Papanui HS - won 1-0 Day 4 - Final: vs Waiuku College - won 1-0.

Spring has sprung and the Darfield Outdoor Bowls season is about to begin.

A well attended Working Bee has put the finishing touches to the Playing Green and its surroundings and all is looking good for the starting day on Saturday, September 23rd.

The Club’s ladies have just completed the running of a successful and popular series of ‘Housie’ afternoons that was run as a fundraiser for a new fence that will be erected around the Club borders.

Early season fixtures for the men in October include the keenly fought game against West Melton and also the annual game against Riccarton Club. After these fixtures both men and ladies begin the Malvern and Canterbury Interclub competitions.

Another important fixture coming up is a ‘Have a Go Day’ the Club is to run on Saturday, September 30th for any interested new players, both young and old. Organisers encourage folk to go along and give it a go.

This season our Club had 24 (years 1-4) future-FERNS and eleven other teams, represented in every grade from two teams in the Y5-6 grade to two in the Premier grade. Congratulations to the teams that made finals day on Saturday, August 26th, Mystics (2nd), Flames (1st), Fauxpas (1st), Rams (2nd) and Darts (1st).

The development of all players throughout the season was impressive, this is due not only to personal player commitment, but also the time and dedication from our coaches.

Our Club is fortunate to have a wealth of coaching knowledge and experience and we look forward to enhancing a culture of shared knowledge and support for future coaches.

With the on-boarding of four new

committee members, including the leadership roles taken on by Terina Graham as acting el Presidente and Sandra Grant as Secretary, there has been a lot of activity behind the scenes to help improve the Club. This has included a review of the roles and responsibilities, new trials and selection process, monthly newsletters (Comms from the Committee), regularly updated website, Saturday slide-show, Club trainings and team building initiatives all in the aim of promoting positive Club culture.

The end of season prize-giving and celebrations were major highlights, connecting the community with the Club. Held on Friday, September 1st, guests were treated to an opening Kapahaka performance by pupils of Darfield Primary

Davies She had everyone in awe of her professionally polished performance then got the youngsters on stage to learn a couple of hip hop dance moves that they later took to the dance floor where the evening ended in a disco!

Congratulations to our acknowledged members, 35 awards were presented on the night, although as with every Club and coach we agree an award could be presented to everyone. The committee would like to thank our members, supporters, and sponsors for a great season.

We intend the momentum for this season to carry forward, and hope to attract new enthusiastic people to join the Darfield Netball Club committee.

Children can enjoy Selwyn District Libraries’ free Grow and Discover programme during the school holidays with multiple session times available across the district.

Inspired by spring-time, ‘Grow your own Garden’ and ‘Spring into Craft’ is designed to encourage children to get creative. ‘Grow your own Garden’ will teach children to grow flowers, herb or vegetable gardens using recycled materials, while ‘Spring into Craft’ will involve using paint and collage to craft beautiful blossom trees.

Selwyn District Libraries also need help on a secret project that they would like to decorate

with children’s artwork. There will be templates available at the ‘Spring into Craft’ sessions and at Selwyn District Libraries throughout the holidays for this secret ‘thing’.

Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon said there will be a grand opening of the project once completed.
