At an event attended by invited guests last Saturday, local winemakers Melton Estate proudly announced the release of ‘Meltonia’™- a méthode traditionelle created using entirely estate-grown grapes, from West Melton (growing in clear view of the function room in which guests were gathered). “Meltonia™ is all about ‘Making Canterbury Sparkle’ and celebrating everything that the Province has to be proud of,” said Philip and Tracy Caunter of Melton Estate. “The region is well known for producing high

quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but even so, a méthode is a wine style not readily available until now,” they added. Meltonia™ is a cuvée of estategrown Chardonnay (60%), Pinot Noir (35%) and Pinot Meunier (5%) which is a typical blend in true French winemaking style. The fruit was hand-picked by Philip and Tracy’s friends and family, with the grapes reportedly in pristine condition and just perfect for méthode.

On Saturday, October 7th Trends and Trivia night in support of the important work of Dementia Canterbury, comes to The Terrace Winebar and Restaurant. Following the success of the last fashion and quiz evening, Darfield’s Scarlett Rose will present their latest collection on the catwalk complemented by the Terrace Winebar’s scrumptious menu. “Our quiz and catwalk show is such a fun format, and we are looking forward to another

successful fund raiser,” said Pam Williams of Scarlett Rose. George Ridgen of the Terrace added, “we are delighted to be hosting this event and look forward to serving our menu to each table, so that everyone can relax, sit back and enjoy the evening.” Pam has a special reason for supporting Dementia Canterbury and explains, “my mum fought a brave battle with Dementia; it was a long and heart-breaking fight. During my journey with her

I had many conversations with friends, strangers and Scarlett Rose customers only to be shocked by the number of people who had been touched by this condition. There was a common feeling of sadness for the person who was suffering, as well as concern for those who were caring for them. A cleaning day has been held at Cotons’ Cottage and the Hororata Museum to prepare for opening on Sunday, September 17th. Silver and glass are gleaming and visitors are welcome on Sundays from 1.30pm to view not only regular displays, but also some new ones.

With the weather now beginning to improve it’s the ideal opportunity to head along to the Museum and Cottage and enjoy a picnic on the grass outside the restored cottage that once belonged to Bentley and Sarah Coton. Coton Visitors can investigate ‘The Stinky’, so named because it was the farm

workers hut, while at the same time they can find out about the history of the area and the people who were instrumental in creating that history. The Hororata Historical Society are continuing the initiative that one of their members Rosemary Dennis was passionate about, that of changing displays on a regular basis. This year it’s reported, there will be a selection of motoring items which may be more of interest to many male visitors, as well as a wide variety of items to appeal to all. The Cottage and Museum welcomes groups and bus tours who are visiting the Selwyn area. The Hororata Historical Society acknowledge the tremendous amount of work and dedication put into the Society by the late Rosemary Dennis, who passed away recently after a short illness. She held the position of secretary for more than thirty years and her contribution and legendary newsletters will be sadly missed by all.

Continued from front page... The House Block contains some of the oldest vines in Canterbury - some are thirty years old and still producing at the highest levels of quality. At the winery the grapes were gently pressed, then completed a short ferment in stainless tanks. The ‘bubbly base’ wine was sent to Allan Scott Wines for tirage bottling (the second fermentation process - this time in bottles, and the addition of yeast and nutrients for its fermentation). A long wait then started. The wine was stored in wooden crates for twenty-three months, before riddling (turning the bottles neck downwards in small steps, along with light shaking to move the lees (yeast precipitate) to the neck of the bottle) and disgorging (cooling of the inverted bottle necks so that the precipitation freezes, the temporary closure can be opened and the precipitation removed). The bottle is then filled to replace the missing volume and fitted with a Champagne cork and halter. “Dosage trials were completed both by the winery and ourselves,” Philip and Tracy said, “and our favourite selected. At last, Meltonia™ was ready to enjoy! “Only 251 cases are available and we are thrilled to be producing wine of such a standard, whilst at the same

time farming in a sustainable manner.” Guests at Saturday evening’s function certainly enjoyed their first taste of Meltonia, with this writer likening it to one of her favourite brands of French Champagne. Meltonia’s off-dry finish and delicious bubbles make it delightfully drinkable, especially with the festive season approaching. It was lovely to see and chat to local Selwyn MP Amy Adams who was taking a brief hour or two away from campaigning, along with Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton whose small baby daughter enchanted those around him. Those enjoying the launch evening listened as Philip talked of their time at the vineyard and while there had been obstacles to overcome - most of all it was the fun of the enterprise that was memorable. After fifteen years of operation, Melton Estate looks forward to showcasing its beautiful boutique wines for many years to come. “Meltonia™ represents the eighth wine now available from Melton Estate, with some of the vineyard’s other wines having been successful in achieving high honours in both local and national wine competitions. “Melton Estate is recognised as one of the leading wineries in

Windtunnel (Windwhistle/ Glentunnel) e-Pals began after teaching staff from both Schools considered how they could use technology to drive purposeful and authentic writing with their junior students. This was initiated by Liz Carston’s (Glentunnel School) current university study of ‘Contemporary Issues in Literacy Education’. Liz, along with Donna Young (Windwhistle School) discussed the idea of e-Pals to explore the use of technology and writing. With the help of Glentunnel’s tech expert Jane Wright and the ‘Go for it!’ attitude of both Schools’ principals Dion Stechmann (Glentunnel) and Frances Nimmo (Windwhistle), e-Pals became a reality. Glentunnel students write to their Windwhistle ‘pals’ on a Monday and Wednesday and Windwhistle students write/ respond on Tuesday and Thursday. Initially, sessions were teacher guided with instruction on how

to use the google slides app to add colour and photos to a page. However it’s reported that older students are now leading the discussion within their eletters. They are sharing ideas about books they are reading, as well as their interests. “Students’ computer and iPad skills have improved and all children are accessing their letters with ease,” said a Windwhistle School spokesperson. “They have learnt to read a letter and respond to what has been said.

When the Hororata Volunteer Fire Brigade received a defibrillator recently they gifted it to the Hororata Citizens Committee for the use of the community. The defibrillator was donated to the Brigade by Fulton Hogan and after discussion by the Citizens committee it was

decided to locate it in the Hororata Garage, mailbox lobby area. This makes it available at all hours, for anyone to use and comes with easy, clear and concise instructions. The central location was chosen as most of the community use the post boxes and are familiar with the area.

They are not only excited about their buddy’s next letter, but are also coming in before school to check for a response to their own e-letter. “The children have not yet swapped photos and there is hope they may meet up at a joint school venture at the end of term.” Donna and Liz also discussed the idea that these children may meet up later at Darfield High School, so this could be the beginning of a life-long friendship.

Local rider, Georgie Sarginson, Sarginson recently represented New Zealand in the Trans Tasman High School Rodeo Challenge, held in Queensland, Australia. Georgie travelled to Australia along with eleven other students from high schools throughout New Zealand, (from Dunedin through to Kaitaia). The Challenge included three rodeos, with each one held at a different Queensland location. Over the ten days the team covered a bit of ground travelling to Cappella, Rockhampton and Yeppoon to compete against the Australian High School team. Each rodeo was made up of four events, steer riding, barrel

racing, bull riding and breakaway roping, with Georgie’s feature event being barrel racing. She and two of the other barrel racers also had an extra challenge by having to ride a different horse at each of the rodeos. “This made it more difficult, but also gave me the great experience of riding horses that are unlike my own,” Georgie said. It certainly didn’t restrict her however from winning her barrel race for the team at the third rodeo of the Challenge. The bulls were another challenge and Georgie commented, “they were certainly a step-up from what

Rural Women Darfield thank all those who came to their Meet the Candidates evening held in the Recreation Centre on September 5th. It was reported to be an informative and extremely well-run evening, with the chairperson on the night, Olive Webb doing a great job. Olive combined the many diverse questions into groups, meaning they could be dealt with cohesively by the candidates. There were seven candidates present, Amy Adams (National), Bryan Chamberlain (Act), Chrys Horn (Greens), Mai ReidyReidy-Taare (Te Tai Tonga for Maori Party), Nicky Snoyink (TOP), Richard Prosser (list candidate for NZ First), and Tony Condon (Labour). Timing and control were of great importance and were well handled by both Olive and the ringer of the bell, Christine Anderson. Anderson 120 members of the public enjoyed the oratory skills of the

speakers, as they responded with their party policies to written questions on water and pollution, health and doctors’ visits, education from modern learning environments to boot camps, immigration, guns and drugs, land ownership and taxation. “The one question which seemed to have floored them all,” said one of the event’s organisers, “was when will we have drug testing of drivers, alongside alcohol testing. No party seemed to have a policy position on this and although it has been discussed in Parliament, it now seems to be on the back burner. “We were all surprised to learn from Amy Adams that the introduction of modern learning environments into many schools was not a government policy, but a decision made solely by school boards.” The hum of conversation at supper time proved that this was

a useful interlude also and candidates did not escape from the stage without interception by the public. “It was a pity we had so few younger voters present in the audience,” the spokesperson said, “as they have a much higher stake in the future of New Zealand. Parliament is made up of more than leaders; people who can represent a variety of views strongly and well are what is needed for good government. It was helpful to have face to face contact with our possible representatives and it was felt that it brought much more information to the fore than internet or TV debates, which tended to concentrate interest on leaders only. For this reason Rural Women regard this gathering as an important part of our policy of strengthening rural communities and we will continue to provide this opportunity for future elections,” they concluded.

The Canterbury Mini Motorcoss Club was established in 2014 and has grown from eighty members, to more than 150 today. Children aged between four and twelve years are welcome to join and classes range from non -competitive through to 85cc. The Club focus is on ‘Fun for the Children and Learning to Ride’. “We are a Club big on making families/kids welcome, getting out and ripping up the dirt. It’s all about fun, and in competitions we give prizes/ trophies to all the kids,” commented committee member Vanessa Moore. The Club runs multiple events during the year including XCountry, King of The Bowl and Flat Track competitions, as well as Fun Days which are used as training days. The Club are aiming to host more events, but currently their track on Deans Road, near Homebush is in major need of

more soil to keep the track up to a high, safe standard. The committee are in the process of trying to organise a Super Mini-X Champs event in November, but to do so would either require some donated soil, or an alternative location in the area. “We would consider any options available,” Vanessa said. “If there are any farmers that could donate a paddock for a day or two to run a flat track event and/or rolling hill country

for X Country it would be greatly appreciated. “We are all very passionate about the children riding and having fun. In spite of hail and plummeting temperatures on Sunday, Terrace Station welcomed nearly 120 garden lovers. Many enjoyed their picnic on the lawn, before the dramatic change in the weather. Primroses, hellebores, violets and other fresh spring flowers, along with the magnificent trees attracted many comments from visitors who warmed their hands round the brazier after wandering around the gardens. As usual, the woodland plants for sale were very popular. Kate Foster of the Terrace Station Charitable Trust was delighted with the results for the Trust.

ACC is working with local partners, including Christchurch City Council and the New Zealand Police, to raise awareness for motorcycle safety during September. The Officer in Charge of Road Policing Operations Kelly Larsen commented that motorcycle safety is a particular issue in Canterbury. “The death or serious injury of anyone on our roads is a tragedy for all involved. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable as they don’t have the same level of protection as car drivers.”

Kelly would like to see all riders wearing proper safety gear and upskilling by taking Ride Forever training. “By riding defensively, riders are able to identify and respond to road hazards early, reducing the chances of being involved in a crash. Good bike handling skills and safe riding practices are key.” Fifty-two motorcyclists were killed across New Zealand last year - so mething ACC Motorcycle Programme Manager David Kielty wants to do something about.

The Ellesmere Speech Competition was held at Prebbleton School on Monday, September 4th. West Melton Primary School sent their Y7 and 8 winners, Kaitlyn A and Daisy M. M Kaitlyn spoke about 'Lying' in the Y7 category, while Daisy spoke about 'Brothers' in the Y8 category. The required

The Darfield/Malvern District MenzShed public Meeting, held on Wednesday, August 29th at the Darfield Recreation Centre attracted thirty members. Chairman, Cliff Hatton welcomed them and committee members gave an outline on how the recommendations that had been put to the meeting, were decided on. With positive responses after discussions, the following was passed: • The Darfield/Malvern District MenzShed was to be officially formed as a Corporate Society affiliated to New Zealand MenzSheds. Required to pay an affiliation fee of $35 a year. • The site will be situated in Frew’s Shed with the possibility of purchasing, or building, another shed when land is available. • Membership joining fee of $200 per person, with an annual fee of $50 thereafter. Allowance will be available for people unable to meet the cost. Anyone that wants to come along and share their skills and socialise will be made most welcome. • The next meeting will be held during the day where everyone can go along and have a look at the MenzShed - details to be advised at a later date.

Darfield Preschool and Nursery have undertaken to participate in the nationwide Terracycle Oral Healthcare Recycling Programme. The programme aims to educate children about good oral care habits and also includes information on how to help the environment through recycling. This means that any oral healthcare waste such as old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste containers and tubes, and empty floss containers can all be dropped off to Darfield Preschool and Nursery where they will collect it up and return it to Terracycle. Once the waste is returned to Terracycle, it is recycled into

After several weather delays the Kirwee Community Garden got under way in the Spring of 2016 with working bees to set up garden beds and plant seedlings. The garden is situated in the grounds of St George’s Anglican Church on the corner of Hoskyns and Courtenay Roads. The Church sees the

garden as a good use of their spare land, however they stress that folk don’t need to be Church-goers to utilise the garden, and everyone is welcome to plant, help at working bees and harvest the produce. The main focus is to grow vegetables for the community, with any spare produce going

to food banks/people in need. The intention is to hold workshops and teaching nights, as well as continue to use the garden as a community meeting place. Over the Summ er the committee held a regular barbecue on Friday nights and these were well supported with everyone bringing their own food and drink and having a good catch-up. “It was very pleasant sitting in the evening warmth with a glass or two of something cold, and eating home-grown salads,” reported a community garden spokesperson. The committee is holding a ‘Spring Opening N ight’ barbecue on Friday, October 10th where the new pizza oven will be used in addition to the usual BBQ, and they hope that current users of the garden plus lots of potential new gardeners, will attend.

In a bid to strengthen Malvern cricket at senior level and have a competitive team in the Canterbury Country Premier competition the last two remaining senior clubs in Malvern (Greendale and South Malvern) have entered into a player loan agreement. Greendale have generously given up their Premier (first grade) status and will drop down to Senior (second grade) level while South Malvern will remain in the Premier grade. Both Clubs will share players in a loan agreement which will hopefully put both Clubs, and Malvern cricket, in a stronger position, result wise. “Having Greendale in the Senior grade will also provide, in

theory, a path way for junior cricketers in Malvern to get a taste of competitive Senior cricket for a year or two,” said spokespersons from both Clubs. “We envisage that this will help prepare them (if good enough) for the rigours of Premier cricket with South Malvern, rather than be thrown into the premier deep end, straight away,” they explained. A requirement of playing in the Premier grade is that of playing on a grass wicket. The South Malvern senior team will play at Darfield on their grass wicket which they feel is a good central base for the Premier team. They will now be known as Darfield/South Malvern or DSM for short.

The Club’s junior section will remain as South Malvern and continue to play at their Glentunnel wicket. This is a very bold (but strategic) move from both Clubs as th ey hav e a ve ry ‘competitive’ history, but initiators feel that it’s a move that is good for the future of Malvern senior cricket. They thank Regan Dalley (Greendale) Mike Pauling (South Malvern) and Dave Beatty (South Malvern) along with others from each Club who have been me et i ng an d a gr e ei ng/ disagreeing to get this right, since November of last year. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by all involved.

A very good number of films were entered for Lincoln Envirotown’s Selwyn Environmental Video Competition. The organisers were particularly pleased at the diverse groups and individuals that had put their film-making skills into showing their concerns and actions relating to this fragile environment. Along with the traditional school entries, were independent adult entries, independent student entries and a youth club entry. The numbers of entries to this competition have been steadily growing which organisers hope is indicative of a growing awareness and concern for the natural world. On the evening of Friday, September 8th around 120

producers, actors, editors and all associated with the productions arrived at the Lincoln Event Centre to view the movies and to hear who had won the various categories, along with the overall Kea Trophy. The standard was high and there were some excellent kindly donated prizes available, as we l l as f ood a nd refreshments - also donated. All seemed in agreement that the event was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative occasion with such a variety of interesting films and messages on view. The Deputy Mayor of Selwyn, Malcolm Lyall presented Certificates and Prizes to entrants, as well as the Category Prize Winners, before the Trophy winners were

announced. “Such was the diversity and interest expressed in the entries that all were winners on the night,” commented Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn Project Manager for Lincoln Envirotown Trust, but the following were adjudged to have won the main awards:” Independent Adult: Martin Langlands ‘Soldiers of The Flow’ High School age group: Aireen Bautista ‘Man and Nature’ Primary School age group: Springston School ‘Save the Eels’ Pre-school age group: Kidsfirst Lincoln ‘Matariki Celebration’. McCorkindale Contrac ng Ltd The Opening Day of the Kirwee Bowling Club will take place on October 7th. While this is pretty much the usual timing for the Club, what is not, is that the opening will take place without an actual Clubhouse. As many locals will have noticed, there has been a lot of activity down at the Bowling Club in the Kirwee Domain as the kitchen end of the building has been strengthened and the old dining room demolished to make way for a new and enlarged dining area. This new section will be built by Totalspan. Fortunately the Sports Pavilion just across the way will be available for the traditional afternoon tea on Opening Day, so the Club will be able to welcome any prospective new members in the time-honoured way: they will have an immediate

opportunity to have a go at bowling, followed by a taste of country hospitality. For bowling, Club members request that some flat-soled shoes be brought along to protect the green. Those joining the Club as beginners will be pleased to know that they are able to be included in the Club competitions right from the start. No-one is required to prove themselves, before becoming part of a team. In fact, all the teams are drawn from a hat, with beginners spread throughout. “This makes all newcomers feel part of the scene right from the start and also makes the competition very even, so that every team has a real chance of winning,” explained a Club spokesperson.

“The Kirwee Bowling Club is like a family where all the members work together and are made to feel like they belong. If you like the sound of this and you're considering taking up lawn bowls, then Kirwee could be the Club for you! Do feel free to come along on Opening Day,” they finished.
