Malvern Netball Centre held their some fantastic games played Finals’ Day on Saturday, August with a few tightly contested 26th at the Darfield Netball finals. The Intermediate Grade Courts in what turned out to be (Yrs 7&8) game was won by great weather. Kirwee Panthers with a four Throughout the day there were goal difference over Darfield Mystics. It was a showcase of the up and coming talent in the Malvern area. Likewise with the Senior Grade (also Yrs 7&8) the Final could have gone either way and a talented Darfield Flames side took out the honours over Springfield/ Sheffield Titans. The Social Grade Final between Kirwee Kaos and Darfield FauxPas was won by Darfield with an eight goal margin and the Premier Reserve Final was won by Darfield Darts against Darfield Rams by six goals. The Premier Final between Kirwee Senior and Springfield/ Sheffield Seniors was won by Kirwee with a nineteen goal margin.

The Oxford Area School PTA can congratulate themselves on having held another successful Oxford’s Wearable Arts show, on Saturday, 26th August. It was reported that it was a spectacular evening with fortyfive entries showcasing their creativity to a capacity audience of 300. The thirty student entries came from numerous Canterbury Schools. Along with Oxford Area School they included Lincoln, Darfield, Sheffield and View Hill. The quality of the entries was outstanding and the audience were wowed by the stunning pieces of work. Judges Charlotte Davis, Davis Mark Adams and Bret de Their had the difficult job of choosing the winners from each category and they commented that, “the quality of entries just keeps

When Natalie and Adrian Mannering of Hororata had an unexpected opportunity land in their laps, they grabbed it with both hands and ran with it. The opportunity was the chance to purchase a substantial amount of Hororata Wholesale Nursery’s plant stock, while Hororata Nursery’s Dave Sligh continued with his farm planting supply and consultancy. “We will cater for urban and lifestyle planting and Dave will continue with farm planting; a big scale we are not ready for yet,” the couple commented. Adrian and Natalie lived in Darfield for sixteen years before relocating to Hororata a year ago with their children Molly (12) and Reuben (11) and moving into the dream, bespoke, straw-bale home they constructed. The enterprise has been aptly named Nat’s Nursery and the couple are thoroughly enjoying both the hands-on aspects, as well as the information and theoretical knowledge to be gained from further study, alongside invaluable assistance by Dave. Nat has horticulture in her blood having grown up on an orchard in Hawkes Bay. She admits to loving gardening, enjoying the experience of watching things grow and the life that a garden brings; birds, insects, and a place to relax and be quiet. Nat is a fully qualified kindergarten teacher and has worked at Annabel's Kindergarten in long and short term teaching roles since 2005. She added that her most memorable and satisfying work is with children in the garden. “My favourite memory is

upcycling a table to create garden boxes and planning what the children wanted to grow in them. We learnt about different plants, watering, weeding, and the best part - harvesting the fruits of our labours,” she added. “We have always wanted to do something for ourselves, so when Dave from Hororata Nurseries said ‘he was scaling down, and if we wanted to start a nursery, now was the time’, we jumped at the opportunity. Adrian and Natalie thank Dave and Wendy of Hororata Nurseries for their ongoing support and guidance. “Dave has been very patient and supportive of my continual questions and ever extended plant moving days, while we juggle with our other life of children and work (Adrian works at Fonterra as a wetside operator and has done for the last five years),” Natalie smiled. “I am really excited about upskilling and refreshing my knowledge of plants and propagation and so have enrolled in a horticulture course with Open Polytechnic. Learning botanical names has been the

biggest challenge, but also a lot of fun. “I have already met some amazing people who have been ever so happy to share their knowledge and show me around their gardens,” Nat said. Nat's Nursery Hororata is a small intimate Nursery and promotes itself as ‘local plantslocal people’. They specialise in natives, hedging, and trees, not too dissimilar to Hororata Nurseries. They are passionate about supporting the local ecosystem with food, as well as making gardens look amazing. Nat’s Nursery are happy to order in plants if they don't have quite enough for a customer’s requirements, or if their customer wants something completely different. They can also discuss what is appropriate for each individual garden and what will go well with what. “As we settle into this new endeavour, we will be open by appointment-only on selected days.”

Manaia Davies, Davies the fourth senior student, will travel to Amsterdam in October to represent New Zealand in an international hip hop competition. The four girls have been fund raising to help cover travel costs to their competitions.

Chairman of The Friends of Darfield Hospital Charitable Trust, Brian Davidson recently presented his 2016/17 report to those attending the AGM. (For the purpose of printing, this has had to be reduced). Brian reports: Following the successful conclusion of our gazebo project, our team has continued to thrive, and to engage positively in projects which emphasise our core goal, to enhance the care, comfort and treatment of patients at the hospital. Our team has provided the following items during the year: • an Aeria 5 mattress system to complement the two specialised Roho mattresses provided previously • a TV Monitor and DVD system which is used specifically for staff training and antenatal education classes • a CD/DVD player for the use of patients resting in the lounge or sunroom • a replacement chest freezer for the storage of food in the kitchen • a new commercial quality microwave oven for both hospital and Meals on Wheels purposes • the recovering of a popular lounge chair in quality, washable fabric • the staining of the large deck and outdoor furniture beside the sunroom.

We have also continued to provide: • the cost of maintaining the water filter • an annual magazine subscription • patient gifts and a hamper for staff at Christmas. These are all able to be provided due to the support of a generous community. These acts of generosity and kindness are appreciated greatly, as are the numerous and gratefully received gifts from patients, or families in memory of loved ones. Two other very valuable long term supporters who deserve our recognition are: • The Darfield Indoor Bowls Club - a profit of $4,900 was realised from last year’s annual indoor bowling tournament event • Darfield Pharmacy’s ongoing sponsorship of the large fish tank in the lounge at the hospital, and allowing us to sell raffles from their shop.

The community is very fortunate to have such a positive, well qualified, caring, and people focussed professional, in this role. We also thank all other nursing, domestic and grounds/ caretaking staff for the dedicated care they provide to the patients and the hospital. I thank all members of our team for their enthusiasm, regular attendance at meetings, willingness to engage in discussion, and the positivity they demonstrate toward decision making.

Tree too big? Not enough light? Or just untidy!

QUESTION: I have an established garden with lots of box hedging. Last summer I noticed that some of these hedges were getting a black sooty mould on them. This has continued to get worse and now some plants look as if they may die. Can you tell me what is causing this and how I might fix the problem? Diane, Darfield Rural.

ANSWER Hi Diane, from your description

it sounds as though your hedges are under attack from Scale. Our wet and cold winter should have slowed their progress but you will need to take some action against these destructive little critters or your hedges will become unsightly and eventually die. Scale are a sucking insect and once they become adults they develop a hard shell which makes them

difficult to kill with a contact spray. If you do not wish to use an insecticide you might have some success spraying the plants regularly with an organic spray oil which is designed to smother the destructive little suckers, otherwise I advise using shield, the insecticide, fungicide combination most commonly used for roses. The active ingredient in Shield is systemic, meaning the Scale should be poisoned when sucking the stems. This treatment should be repeated every 10 days for 2 or 3 applications or until all sign of the scale has gone. Before spraying cut out the worst affected damage and burn.

QUESTION: My property is at an elevation of around 300 metres. I have always wanted to grow a Kauri tree in my garden, will it survive?

Ray, Sheffield Area.

ANSWER Hi Ray, The mighty Kauri or

Agathus Australis grows naturally, mostly in the upper North Island, but it is hardier than most realise and will survive in our environment as long as some care is taken to protect the young tree from heavy frost, snow and dry summer conditions. I know of a couple of Kauri growing happily as far west as Hororata but I believe they could survive even closer to the foot hills. If you take care of your young tree, once it is around 1.8 to 2 metres tall it should be above the severe frost line. When choosing a spot for your young Kauri look for good top soil and free drainage, preferably with an existing canopy overhead, but remember to allow it plenty of room to grow into a magnificent adult tree.

the power supply’s capacity. Connetics were happy to come on board and offer a temporary solution to power the stalls area, they also provided a team who came to the event to manage and oversee the installation. It soon became clear that a more permanent power solution was required and the Connetics team presented a plan to HCT, which consisted of underground power cables, which would then connect to power outlets that could be powered by a generator. The new system will take a considerable work load off volunteers as they will no longer have to dig extension cords into the ground for the event, as well as making the power supply considerably safer. The new system will also become a community asset as it will be available in case of an emergency where the power might be out for a length of time. Additionally it will be available for other Hororata Domain events. The first stage of the power upgrade was completed several weeks ago with the installation of the power cable which was generously donated by General Cable and installed by Coalgate Earthworks. As with any project at the Domain, it was made possible by a dedicated crew of volunteers and locals donating their time and equipment. While this may seem like a small project, it is valued at over $50,000 worth of material and labour. Connetics has kindly

worked with their suppliers to source all the materials free of charge and they have had their apprentices involved in the assembly. Connetics has also been supported by local businesses such as Coalgate Earthworks and Ballagh Contracting, who have donated their machinery and time. HCT committee member Cindy Driscoll said, “Connetics has been amazing. For them to go to all their suppliers to source the materials has been a big undertaking. Closed for Good is BNZ’s annual day of volunteering. The Bank closes its stores and most of its support offices on the Day (August 23rd) to get out into New Zealand communities and lend a hand. To make the biggest difference they can there are various ways BNZ staff assist: FINANCIAL LITERACY HELP During Closed for Good trained staff visit organisations, groups and schools to deliver workshops on budgeting, being scam savvy, or money basics for kids. SKILLED HELP BNZ staff have a broad range of skills and can help with HR, finance, marketing, digital, social media and strategy to name but a few areas they can assist in. To the Editors: During a recent conversation with a farming friend, we hit on the subject of dairy farming and the effects of nitrogen on our rivers. He pointed out that a bigger problem than dairy farming was the introduction of weed species; mainly gorse, broom, willow and pine forest. When I was a kid, some sixty years ago, we spent a lot of time at the lower Selwyn river, even then we used to call the strange weed growing on the stones in the river, gorilla snot. At that time there were very few dairy farms, but all along that river bed, were miles of gorse and broom, both of which are heavy introducers of nitrogen into the soil. These plants are deep rooted, and many of our river beds are dry, but the water still runs below. The decomposing pine needles from thousands of hectares of introduced Pine forests add further nitrogen to the soil (their yellow pollen also instills further nitrogen). That pollen floats into our air at the rate of about 200 to 300 kilograms per hectare (depending on the age of the trees); 2.4% of that is nitrogen and of that, 60% is water soluble amino nitrogen - transferred into our water ways and washing down our rivers. While dairy farming might be contributing to the problem, I think some of the blame lies with our ancestors for bringing in all these noxious pests. Not only plants, but also possums, rabbits, magpies etc all of which are competing with our native flora and fauna and releasing agents that destroy our environment. Remember there were no mammals in New Zealand, they were all introduced. Maybe DoC, Ecan and Councils should clean up their own back yard before they point the finger, and let it be them that makes our water ways and rivers pure again.

Darfield High School (DHS) completed a clean sweep on Saturday, August 26th by winning the Ca nterbury Secondary Schools One-Day Equestrian Event at McLean’s Island. The win for DHS came on the back of victories in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Show Jumping and Dressage competitions earlier in the year, making it three from three for the School. It is the first time DHS has won all three titles in the same year and they are only the second school to have attained this feat (the previous was Rangi Ruru in 2004). Darfield Blue team members, Georgia Allison (16), Charlotte Thomas (13), Katherine Hadler (14) and Sophie Jarvis (14), competed against twenty other teams from fourteen secondary schools throughout the Canterbury area. The event was made up of three disciplines; dressage, cross country, and show jumping. Nicky Voss, Voss team manager said, “the cross country was a lot more technical and challenging this year than previous years.” Only ten of the twenty-one teams finished the day with a ‘live’ score. To achieve a ‘live’ score three members of each team needed to complete all three disciplines to be ‘live’ or competitive. Darfield Blue were dominant leaders in the competition right from the first dressage class and after a superb crosscountry and some equally spectacular showjumping rounds, they went on to win the event with an overall score of 99.6 points which also gave them the Jane Sullivan Trophy. Darfield Maroon team members, Jodie Rollings, Rollings Caitlin Rayne and Mikayla Jarvis competed on the

day as well and they also had a superb result, finishing fourth overall. DHS had a third team entered, Darfield White, Caitlin Aubrey, Aubrey Cassandra Aubrey and Niamh Rayne which didn’t finish with a ‘live’ score, however they too had some wonderful performances through out the day. Niamh completed her events on a borrowed horse after her horse was found to be lame the day before the event. “There is such a huge amount of effort and dedication put in by these riders,” Nicky said. “I

too am a rider and understand the difficulties of juggling riding with school, especially over the winter months. Unlike other sports, part of it is looking after the horse/s welfare and this is all year round, with no time off. Riding in the winter afternoons is very difficult, but these girls do it all year round. “I am extremely proud of all of our riders. Their polish, sportsmanship and pure love of their sport make being their Team Manager a pleasure,” Nicky concluded.

From Derek Crombie, Managing Director, Central Plains Water Ltd Greenpeace has called for Cantabrians to take part in a peaceful civil disobedience demonstration against ‘Big Irrigation’ in the coming weeks. To Balance claims made by Greenpeace CPW would like to provide some key information that Greenpeace have failed to mention. An Irrigation NZ study shows there is no correlation between areas of high irrigation development and regions with poor water quality. In fact, Environment Canterbury has already identified that the restoration of Te Waihora cannot be achieved without the CPW scheme and its ability to protect the aquifers. CPW wants to protect and enhance Canterbury’s water quality and be recognised environmentally as a world leader by protecting and enhancing the surrounding waterways including land quality. This can be outlined in two key points. 1) By taking water from the Rakaia River in a controlled way, we are protecting the aquifers as farmers will no longer rely on groundwater wells and artesian supplies.

CPWL - Stage 1 canal. Stage 1 has already completed its second successful irrigation season and is showing some exciting benefits including existing groundwater irrigators only abstracting 25% of their groundwater allocation during the 2015/16/17 season, leaving 80 million cubic meters of water in the aquifers. 2) Nutrient levels on farms inside the CPW scheme are monitored and audited yearly with every farm having its own management plan, the reduction in nutrient application is one of the key environmental pillars on which the scheme is built. Claiming that irrigation is all about dairy conversions is incorrect. Yes, some farms will convert but they will have to manage within acceptable nutrient levels. In our Stage 2 area, indications are that only 15% of the area will convert to dairy and the remainder will

continue to be top quality cropping land. In the long term, even with the completion of Stage 2, our nutrient discharge levels will be lower in 2022 than they are today because of the advancement of new management practices and consent requirements. CPW has established over fifty monitoring points downstream of the scheme as well as established an Environmental Management Fund of approximately $160,000 per year and also the Te Waihora Enhancement Fund ($160,000/ year) and recently agreed with ECan to provide a discharge of 3.5 cumecs or 45 million cubic metres per year of water into the Selwyn to replenish the flows. CPW is also actively involved in the local community including providing safety vests to local schools, water for emergency services, Stream augmentation for the Selwyn River and community water supply just to name a few, as well as the wider economic impact of between $1b and $1.4b per annum when the scheme is complete.

This month’s Board meeting was held at the Glenroy Hall. Firstly I would like to thank the Glenroy Committee for hosting us, and to those members of the Community and Committee who took the opportunity to attend the Board meeting and address the Board on local issues of interest. Items raised by the local community included: Glenroy signage; the integrity of the Glenroy township; Civil Defence functions and responsibilities at the Glenroy Hall; issues relating to Rakaia Gorge Road; and the wide range of activities being undertaken at the Glenroy Hall. During our meeting, Board members raised a wide range of subjects in their monthly reports including report backs from recent Community Committee meetings that had been attended; the forthcoming Rewi Alley celebration; and confirmation of a proposal to proceed with the Darfield Annual Christmas Picnic in the Park. The Board received a report on proposed Council changes to current speed limits (of particular note in our area is Castle Hill), and rural road speeds. From its Discretionary Fund, the Board allocated grants to members of the Red and White Stripes U12 Futsal Team, Darfield High School U15 Rugby and Senior A Girls’ Basketball teams, Kirwee Plunket and the Homebush Stables Historical Society. The Board received presentations from the Glentunnel Township Committee on flooding concerns which will be investigated further by Council staff. We also had a presentation from the Darfield Tennis Club which will be referred back to the Reserve Board.
