The funds are all in and counted and have now been disbursed to the recipients, bringing to a close a hugely successful and well supported fundraising event.

In one only evening, hosted by the Kirwee Tavern on June 10th, the massive total of $36,000 was raised. The community raised the money to support local Kirwee farmer Hamish Reid and his fight against Hodgkins Lymphoma.

“This total was only made possible by the fabulous Malvern community and the hard work and commitment from locals,” commented Kirwee Publican Steve Evans and Hamish’s wife Andrea Reid.

To top off this outstanding fundraising total, Hamish has also had some of his own fantastic news. In the past few weeks he has been declared back in remission after receiving a Bone Marrow Transplant.

The money raised has gone on to do more than organisers ever imagined or hoped, with not only the Reid family benefitting from the funds raised, but also the Malvern Cancer Support Group, the Bone Marrow Unit and the Lymphoma and Leukaemia Society receiving funding from this amazing event.

The local community and others from beyond the area donated items for the fundraising auction and fifteen participants shaved their heads and gained

sponsorship for the cause.

Due to his health, Hamish could not attend the fundraising evening, however his family were all there to witness the amazing generosity of the community.

It is now one year since Simon and Donna Hurndell became the owners of the Darfield PostShop. The couple have been a part of the local community since 1999, which has made the transition to PostShop owners relatively easy as both community happenings and people are familiar.

“The first year has been amazing, both with the very supportive locals and with our lovely staff,” Donna said.

The year has seen many changes to the Shop including the introduction of numerous new products. Customers are well looked after with the comprehensive gift station and things have no excuse to go flat if the battery stand is taken advantage of. However the latest inclusion has been the introduction of the pocketmoney wall. Donna and her staff created this in the toy section of the shop to help children locate goodies valued in the $5, $10 and $15 range.

“The PostShop is constantly changing and updating what’s on offer,” Donna said. “My current favourite would have to be the ‘Charm It’ charm bracelet,” she added. “The bracelets and charms make the perfect birthday present for girls.”

The PostShop prides itself on the fact that they promote local businesses; one of which is ‘Lovely Bubbly by Amanda’.

and business owner Amanda Wyatt regularly re-stocks her ever-changing creations.

Amy Adams, National candidate for Selwyn: Being the local MP for Selwyn is a huge privilege, as is being part of a N ational-led Government which has guided New Zealand through some challenging times with a steady hand.

Owning a family farm with my husband means I understand wha t m a ke s o ur ru ra l communities tick. I am proud of the investments the National-led Government has made in improving broadband services for both rural and urban areas; and in strengthening our international trade ties and opening up new markets for our farmers and growers.

Meanwhile being the mum of two independent young people

keeps me grounded and helps me appreciate the issues that affect the next generation.

As your MP, I've worked hard to deliver more schools and c l a s s ro o m s ac ro s s o u r communities, better police services, a new marine reserve in Akaroa Harbour and roading improvements around Selwyn.

Some examples of my work in Parliament include legislation to combat cyberbullying and new approaches to deal with family violence in our communities.

I believe that for too long Government has been the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. We are starting to change this with our new social investment approach and I am

excited about the possibilities.

My family history is connected to this beautiful district, and it holds many special memories.

My mother grew up on a farm near Lincoln, and went to school in Ladbrooks. My greatgrandfather had a farm in Southbridge and donated some of it to the first Catholic Church many years ago.

I love the Selwyn District and all that it has to offer, and I want our region to grow, and prosper.

In the 1970s I worked for the National Railways out of Christchurch and for the National Airline Corporation (NAC) of New Zealand. I have worked for social welfare in Work and Income NZ too.

I love NZ First because it cares about the regions! One of its common sense policies talks about ‘Fair treatment for the regions’. We want a fair share of royalties to stay in the regions, and a fair day's work for a fair day’s pay!

No to a water tax, this is definitely not practical for our farmers.

We are committed to looking after our seniors, and making sure that they have adequate care and funding! We will extend the benefits of the Supergold too.

We want an affordable health care system, and an affordable housing market, with much lower immigration than we have

today. Our infrastructure is over -stretched, and New Zealand people need to be looked after first!

Nicky Snoyink, The Opportuni es Party candidate for Selwyn: I grew up in mid Canterbury with the good fortune of a typical New Zealand childhood, roaming the region’s wild p l a c e s. During my time working in the tourism industry, I have observed significant changes, many harmful, to the places I love to work and play.

The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) is now accepting applications from established, emerging, and local artists who wish to exhibit at Darfield Artweek, running this year from Friday, October 6th to Sunday, October 15th. Application forms are available at the Selwyn Gallery, 17 South Terrace, Darfield, or on: selwyngallery.co.nz/artweek/ “This annual celebration of art will feature exhibits in the Darfield Recreation Centre, the Selwyn Gallery, and the Darfield Library,” said MCAC Chairperson, Philip Baldwin.

Baldwin “We anticipate that these three venues will house exhibitions showcasing over three hundred artworks submitted by as many

as one hundred and twenty artists from Selwyn District, the city of Christchurch, and countrywide.”

Many artists and visitors come to Artweek to spend a day in Darfield and the surrounding area to enjoy the art exhibits, patronise local businesses, and enjoy the attractions of the area.

The MCAC is also delighted to announce that the judge for Artweek 2017 is Jan Robertson, Robertson who teaches Art at Rangiora High School. “Jan is an established artist whose work seamlessly embraces art and craft,” Philip commented.

“We would also like to thank local businesses and the Friends of MCAC for their

support of Artweek. Their generosity ensures that significant prizes can be awarded by our judge,” Philip said. “All of these, including the $2,000 Premier Award, will be announced at the opening night function on Friday, October 6th, at 7pm.” Opening night tickets for the general public are $15, and can be purchased in advance from the Selwyn Gallery or $20 at the door.

“Entry to Darfield Artweek’s three exhibition spaces is free from Saturday, October 7th to Sunday, October 15th, allowing everyone to visit and appreciate the breadth of talent in our community,” Philip concluded.

The Selwyn Gallery’s newest exhibition ‘Surrealists - What Dreams May Come’ features a wonderful mix of the whimsical.

Their intricate details evoke wonder and imagination, making this ‘different’ exhibition one not to be missed. The exhibitors include three very talented artists: Jinx in the Sky, Sky Dave Pearson, Pearson and John Burns.

Burns The exhibition will run from September, 1st through to September, 25th with the opening night on Friday, September 1st.

Jinx in the Sky hails from Austria, and moved to New Zealand in 2006.

She finds inspiration in dreams, emotions and song lyrics. Jinx in the Sky commented that sometimes even small things such as sunlight passing through coloured glass or just a striking colour combination can trigger ideas for new paintings.

“This series of paintings is inspired by my love for botanic gardens and Victorian glasshouses. The glasshouse in my paintings serves as a little retreat. A place to relax…safe oasis to daydream in…a fortress of inner peace and light. Under the glass, safe from the elements, it provides a special place to nurture what brings us joy, what makes us happy, what keeps us sane.”

David Pearson has been drawing since his early primary school days. His favourite things to draw at that time were tanks, skeletons, and dungeons.

After many years of scratching around with biro and paper, he searched to find a suitable medium to finally take his ideas and rough drawings through to finished work.

In 2010, Dave signed up to do a digital concept design workshop in Wellington, and was hooked.

Fantasy art and design in the movie industry have been his major influences. Dave’s goal is to develop his painting technique and style, and do commissioned work for book and album covers.

John Burns and his wife live in the village of Otira, “a place of d y n a m ic w e a t h e r, h i g h mountains, rivers and waterfalls, native birds and animals, all the simple things we love most.

“I have been an artist for a very long time, sold works through galleries and our own gallery here in Otira. My art is in a state of constant evolution. Some

have stories, some are crazy, gentle, mad, kind, thoughtful.

Different, is a word I hear a lot about my art, and a word I like to be - different.”

John is proud to say he has never been to art school. He began painting portraits, but now is only interested in painting contemporary art, including modernist illustrations of people, including Maori women.

John’s wife, Di GordonGordon-Burns, Burns has written a collection of children's books which John plans to illustrate: “I've done the cover and it's like no other children's book.”

Vicky Siddall started KCK Beauty in Dunsandel, last month. The business is situated inside Redz Hair Design, on Main South Road, in the Dunsandel township.

“With such a big space at Redz Hair Design having KCK Beauty on site has worked out superbly,” Vicky reports.

Living in Selwyn for the last eighteen years, Vicky is married with three children who have gone to Springston and Lincoln High Schools. She enjoys walking, baking and horses, although she admits the horses have not been getting the usual attention while she has been getting KCK up and running.

The family also has a six month old puppy and she laughingly comments that you forget just how much cleaning up after a puppy is needed!

Vicky was a late comer to the beauty industry discovering her interest in the profession after her daughter suggested it might be a good fit for her.

“I trained at the National School of Aesthetics and loved every minute of it,” Vicky said. “The

anatomy and physiology was way more in depth than I realised, which offered me some challenges, but in a good way.

“I found it very different from sitting theory exams at high school, and found sitting practical exams a whole new experience.”

Vicky has chosen to use Janssen Skincare at KCK Beauty and she also uses it herself. The skincare range has been around since 1990, and is used in eighty different countries. The products

are not tested on animals, which is important to Vicky.

Vicky feels that women just don’t indulge themselves with as many facials as they deserve and at only $60 at KCK Beauty, it really is an affordable luxury.

“Especially for mums who deserve those precious minutes to themselves,” she added.

“I am looking forward to meeting more local women and would love them to just drop in, check the place out and say hi,” Vicky ended.

Say ok Google on an android cell, followed by what it is you want and off it will go. iPhones not so much.

Friday, August 25th - dawned as a fine sunny, Spring day. Perfect for collectors on the streets fundraising for the Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day appeal.

“Another display of community spirit was witnessed wherever you travelled last Friday throughout the Malvern district,” reported Malvern Cancer Support Group spokesperson Elaine Guy. Guy “Daffodil Day once again saw an army of volunteers collecting for this worthy cause. Year on year we are amazed by the generosity of the community, with offers of support to give an hour (or three). Helpers came from West Melton, through Darfield to Springfield, and from Glentunnel, around to Greendale, as well as everywhere in-between,” Elaine added. “Here in Darfield, even some of our local businesses got in on the act and had their windows dressed in the Daffodil theme - many thanks to Rosalie at Mason’s Drapery and Pam at Scarlett Rose for their support,” Elaine said.

The Malvern Cancer Support Group with all the community’s support has raised $8208.10.

“A huge thank you from us all,” Elaine concluded.

WANTED FARMERS DO YOU NEED HELP? Do you want to contribute to the students training / educa on and receive free help with labour intensive jobs? Darfield High School Rural College can help.

Rural College is an Agricultural Course at the school which trains students in the fundamental skills required for employment in the Agricultural field. We have grown so much in size and have over 140 students. Hands on experience is a big part of this programme and this is why it is so successful. The students gain so much more knowledge in doing so, rather than just inside the classroom. This leads on to many students gaining employment in this field and many students going onto University for degrees in Agriculture.

Are you able to help with: Holiday Work Experience, one or two students at a me Prac cal Days on Fridays, well supervised small class lots 9.30am - 2.30pm.

For the programme to work we urgently need your help as we have so many students wan ng to do this programme. We need help in hos ng prac cal days where small groups go out on Fridays, with the teacher, and do a variety of farm work.

The students also require work experience during their holidays. This is where they learn from you and can help you in your farm ac vi es. We have our own risk assessment plans for health & safety and we accept full responsibility for students’ health & safety on your property. There is no cost to you.

The students are very capable and learn at school how to do fencing, motor bike riding, quad bike riding and tractor work.

The students also enter the Na onal Trade Academy Farm Skills Compe on where they excel and have won many tles against the other schools in the South Island. It’s been reported that many businesses have started this year’s new Responsible Business Awards’ survey and indeed quite a few have completed them and had their conversations with assessors.

Lincoln Envirotown are very grateful to the businesses who are busy completing their new comprehensive survey and online system. As with anything online, there have been teething problems and the organisers have been lucky to have a dedicated group of Assessors who have been helping businesses.

The Awards’ Evenings will be held at the end of October/early November. The evenings are an

excellent chance for business people to meet and hear about business initiatives, whilst enjoying plenty of food and refreshments.

Some great evenings are planned for the future, with guest speakers talking on such topics as, ‘building a business premises with re-used materials’, ‘the pros and cons of electric vehicles in business’, ‘sustainable wineries’, ‘the social enterprise model’ and ‘disposing of electrical waste responsibly’.

With the Awards being run throughout Selwyn for the first time there will be the added interest of a business winning the overall prize for the whole

To the Editors: Two Rivers Community Trust wishes to thank Sicon for its very generous support of the Darfield Community Garden at Almond Park.

The trenching and laying of water pipe; and the fitting of taps through the Garden is a significant contribution to the development of the Garden for

the community of Darfield. As we all know, water is critical to growing things in Darfield. The extension of the water line through the Garden will allow the addition of vegetable garden beds and irrigation for the 25 donated heritage fruit trees that have been planted.

Local property owner, John Knox has been busy giving back to the environment by planting one of N ew Zealand’s threatened native tree species, the Kauri (Agathis Australis) in Darfield.

Over time John and Patricia Knox have developed their property in the Landsborough subdivision, with a range of native plants.

The new Kauri tree additions to

the native plant corridor that runs the full length of the boundary fence-line, adjacent to the Darfield Community Water race, will help contribute to preserving the threatened species.

Kauri dieback is being caused by a recently discovered disease known as Kauri collar rot, John reports. This has the potential to spread rapidly, possibly by people, and animals

walking in several North Island Kauri forests.

Although Kauri occur naturally in the northern forests, the southern limits for their growing has now extended south over geological time through climate change. As a result, many Kauri trees now grow successfully in Canterbury gardens and even further south. Kauri trees are considered beneficial as longterm carbon sinks.

Less than ten percent of original Kauri forests remain today as a result of earlier heavy logging, burning and lightning strikes, and John added, “it is sad to think these remaining trees are once again under threat from disease”.

John feels that by planting the Kauri trees, along with other gardeners that are doing so in Darfield, it will hopefully enable the continuation of the largest, magnificent, New Zealand tree species that can grow up to a height of sixty metres.

It has been a busy couple of months at The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery West Melton.

The main event that has had everybody talking over the last few weeks was the children’s trip to the Isaac Theatre Royal, where they went to watch the Hungry Caterpillar Show.

Attending this event had been built up for several weeks beforehand, with many art and craft activities, as well as dramatic performances by the children re-enacting the story, in preparation for them watching the Show. The trip into town on a bus was exciting in itself for

the children. Tracey Summerfield, Centre owner and Summerfield teaching staff at the Centre give special thanks to all the parent helpers who made the awesome experience possible.

Recently the children were lucky to have a visit from Lakyn’s pet lamb, Ruby. Ruby was only three days old and was well prepared for the winter chills, with a warm jumper on.

The children enjoyed the time with Ruby, and there were lots of smiles all around.

Six thousand voters could miss out on voting in the September General Election after enrolment update packs were returned marked ‘gone no address’.

Voters whose packs were returned to sender have been taken off the electoral roll.

“These voters need to get back on the roll now so their vote will count this election,” Chief Electoral Officer, Alicia Wright said. “If you’ve moved house, you will need to update your enrolment details online, or fill in a new enrolment form and return it to us.”

FLY AND SPIDER TIME

The me for fly and spider control is ge ng close again. For flies it seems to start when you hear the lawn mowers out on a Saturday morning, piles of warm ro ng grass clippings are the ideal place for maggots to become established early. Then of course the fly numbers increase which increases the ac vity of spiders. The warmer northwesterly winds will bring shiny new webs from the forests north of Christchurch; each one with a spiderling a>ached. These dri\ in the wind looking for a place to make home un l the winds slow down, or are interrupted, by the Port Hills which drops them down and on to our homes.

There are quite a few people who are reluctant to have spider and fly proofing done on their property from bad experiences in the past, runny brown streaks on walls and a terrible smell. But I can assure you with the New Zealand made, modern products, used by Spiderban, along with modern methods of applica on, there is seldom a problem.

What happens is in .73 milliseconds the Google search engine pulls together from all its resources of indexed sites the answer for you. Problem is, there are 6,000,000 of them to choose from. Think I’m joking - try it! Put in “How do you search on google?” and that’s what you get.

All very well but some mes you need to refine your search a bit.

Do that to our phrase and it takes .68 seconds and gives you 599,000 results. A couple of notes ….don’t worry too much about spelling Google will use the most common spelling to find your word, plus with voice now coming to the fore - use your voice to search.

Say ok Google on an android cell, followed by what it is you want and off it will go. iPhones not so much.

PC’s have Windows 10 and something called Cortana which while not quite available yet in our area of the world, will prove very useful when it is.
