At last Saturday’s end-ofseason Kirwee Rugby Football Club Awards evening, Club stalwart Raewyn Feast saw her name not only added to the Honours’ Board when she was presented with a Life Membership, but also the first woman to have achieved this privilege.

Kirwee Rugby Club Patron, Trevor Wall outlined Raewyn’s involvement in the Club to those gathered to celebrate players and administrators’ sporting achievements.

Trevor told how Raewyn joined the Kirwee Rugby Club Committee in 2003 while also that year assisting her husband Gary with the U7 team as manager; she is still a committee member fourteen years later.

“In 2010 Raewyn accepted the Club secretary’s job and in 2017 is still serving in this role,” Trevor said. “She has assisted several Presidents and always has the Club

Acclaimed and magnificent soprano Lois Johnston returns to Hororata, along with soprano Reva Tokona and pianist Mark Bevin.

Lois has been a friend of St John’s Hororata since the earthquakes. When her teaching studios in town were annihilated by the quakes, Lois brought her pupils to the wonderful acoustics and piano in the wooden St John’s Church.

“Initially she thanked us by staging her pupils’ concerts for us all to enjoy, but latterly she has just come to us each year,” said Dr Olive Webb, Webb a spokesperson for the St John’s event.

Following a move to Dunedin, a

couple of years ago, Lois has hit the Otago ground running.

She has established a new Baroque opera company that has already had extremely successful performances. “Lois is teaching the crème de la crème of young singers and is still finding time to entertain us,” Olive explained.

Lois brings with her a talented young soprano in Reva and brilliant accompanist, Mark.

They will present a variety of arias and songs - from the drama of the baroque to the novelty and excitement of the 21st century.

The performance will take place on Sunday, August 27th (with a preceding luncheon) and

people are also more than welcome to attend the St John’s morning Worship Service which is held prior.

Spring was in the air for the first of the Terrace Station Open Garden Days at Hororata on Sunday. Event organiser, Kate Foster was delighted with the large turnout of over 160 visitors, plus children. Many

stayed for several hours rejoicing in the beautiful conditions and the massed carpets of snowdrops contrasting with the bare winter trunks of magnificent trees. As usual there were woodland

plants for sale and many enthusiastic buyers. Kate commented that it was an excellent start to the season of Open Garden Days for the Terrace Station Charitable Trust.

Along with the snowdrops, hellebores and other early spring flowers the newly opened walkway exhibiting huge old trees attracted many comments.

Ben Taylor proudly holds the New Zealand flag at the Junior World Rowing Championship.

2011 $800,000 has been provided in grants to over 180 young Cantabrian achievers between the ages of fifteen and twenty. Many have gone on to achieve tremendous success in the fields of sports, arts and academia which provides inspiration for newer grantees to further their talents and achievements on the world stage.

Ben travelled to Lithuania with a twenty-four strong team which included managers and coaches and commented that one of the highlights was meeting new people from all around the world.

Following his silver medal success representing New Zealand, Ben has numerous future competitions in his sights.

“I would like to make the Southern Rowing Performance Centre and then gain an under twenty-three’s trial next season so I could represent my country again,” Ben concluded.

West Melton local, seventeen year old, Ben Taylor, recently took on the world’s best at the Junior World Rowing Championship in Trakai, Lithuania, (held from August, 2nd through to the 6th).

The world championship was a first for Ben, but if he has his way it certainly won’t be his last.

He was selected alongside fellow school team mate Thomas Russell from St Andrew’s College to row in the coxless four at the Junior World Championship (the other places being taken by competitors from Auckland Grammar and Kings College).

Getting to the championship has not come without some hard work and sacrifice for Ben who trains thirteen times a week; this includes eleven sessions on the water and two strength and conditioning sessions.

Ben’s hard work has paid off and saw him and the team returning home from Lithuania with a silver medal. They were strong contenders throughout the competition placing first in their heat race, second in the semi final and came in second on the final with a time of 6.17300, missing out on first place by 1.6 seconds.

Rowing is in Ben’s blood with his father Andrew Taylor also a rower for St Andrew’s in his school days. “It is pretty cool knowing my father rowed also and for the same Club and School,” Ben said. “This was a big motivator to do as well, or even better than him,” he added with a smile.

Ben motivates himself by achieving his goals and then setting even higher goals for himself. “I was also very motivated by knowing I was representing my country and most importantly myself, so I really wanted to do well.”

Both Ben and Thomas have rowed together for the past four years and both agree having each other there really pushes them to perform better.

The Inspire Foundation greatly assisted with Ben’s travel funding for which he is extremely grateful.

Darfield Primary School PTA did it again this year with yet another successful fun-filled and enjoyable quiz night. This year’s theme was the Wild West and Friday, August 11th saw the Darfield Recreation and Community Centre converted into a scene from a Wild West movie.

Thirty-six teams in total (214 people) entered the competition, with many coming along in costume to enjoy the night. The teams were made up from School families,

This year the PTA did things a little differently and instead of asking businesses to donate something as a prize they were instead invited to enter a team on the night and enjoy a terrific social evening.

There were prizes awarded for the best dressed, with the honours going to: Best dressed team: Curtains Please!

The PTA were all clad in check shirts, hats and boots and with the red and white checkered table cloths, along with horseshoes and hay bales it was easy to see a lot of work had gone in to the planning and organising of the event.

There were seven rounds of questions for the evening with an added bonus of a ‘Ponderous Question’. The bonus question had many stumped for quite a few rounds, while others solved it after the first clue.

The score boards soon showed clearly who the top teams were; there was a large middle bunch,

Last week the Darfield Library was the venue for a Science Alive workshop, attended by eighteen local children. They enjoyed an action packed hour of science, which focussed on an ‘Adventure to the Moon’.

The workshop allowed those attending to try on an astronaut suit, and pretend to walk on the

moon.

The children then got to try their hand at creating by constructing a clockwork model of the solar system that demonstrated the arrangement and movement of the planets. They also made a Moon phase dial, and created craters.

The final activity of the workshop was binocular viewing, this

proved especially popular, with the children testing how they worked by reading the number plates of parked cars. Children also got to look through a telescope to see if they could read the titles of books at the far end of the library.

The event was pronounced an informative afternoon, enjoyed by all those attending.

On Saturday, August 5th, senior (DHS) organised and attended the chosen theme was ‘A Night students at Darfield High School their annual formal. This year at the Casino’.

To help bring the theme to life the Formal Committee spent a great deal of time creating appropriate decorations for the event. This included stapling together playing cards and ribbon to make bunting, all with a liberal covering of glitter. The Hall was then suitably decorated creating a very casino-like environment.

The formal was reportedly a huge success with all those attending enjoying the evening immensely.

Prizes were awarded in a range of different categories all adding to the glamour of the event.

On Wednesday, August 2nd 2017, the Malvern Carnival of Rugby was held at the Kirwee Rugby Club for any Malvern school students who wanted to come along.

The morning began with a rotation of rugby drills and skills. Parents set up the six rotations that focussed on kicking, passing, ball skills, decision making and ball familiarity.

After lunch the rugby players got into year groups. The Year

1 and 2’s played touch. The Year 3 and 4’s played Ripper.

The Year 5 and 6’s played tackle rugby.

Every learning group got split into teams. The teachers chose two teams to play each other.

I found it hard because people in front of me wouldn’t let me past.

“It was quite challenging because we were playing with different players and we didn’t know what skills everyone had,” said Matt Geddes, Geddes Kirwee School.

against lots of different people and players from Kirwee,” said Will Turner from Kirwee School.

A panel of selectors were watching the games and some players got chosen for the Malvern Rugby team to go the Canterbury Primary Schools Rugby tournament.

After the games we got the Kirwee people in their jerseys under the rugby posts and we took a big picture to thank Ross Marsh and the team from Darfield Tyre Centre for supporting Malvern by providing rugby and soccer balls for Primary Schools in the Malvern area just in time for the Winter Tournament.

Registrations are open now for Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s new swimathon event, ‘Swim to Summer’.

Following the success of the ‘Swim to Rio’ swimathon last year, which raised $2,300 for St John Ambulance, Rolleston, the Selwyn Aquatic Centre has issued a challenge to Selwyn residents to swim a combined total of 10,000km in pool lengths in the lead up to summer.

Kathy Moore, Moore Aquatic Facilities Manager said, “the aim is to get more people swimming, more often.”

“The challenge is for individuals to collectively swim 10,000km before December 1st, while fundraising for prostate and breast cancer awareness. We encourage everyone to come along to work on their fitness and help a worthy cause.”

Those interested in being involved simply need to sign up in person at the Centre, start

swimming or aquajogging, and log their laps for each swim at reception. Every length of the 25-metre pool or hydrotherapy pool will count towards the total distance. A donation box will be on display at reception for funds raised.

A number of prizes will be available for those who swim the most laps, in categories for men, women and youth swimmers, as well as most visits to the Centre during the Swimathon.

The last Club meeting saw members meet in the Saint Ambrose Sunday School Hall for a soup and savoury lunch, with 25 attending. Our speaker for the day was Gordon Common (brother of Ruth Booth - who will be known to many); he spoke on the care and growing of Rhododendrons. This was a very interesting talk and Gordon also talked about grafting and propagation. Gordon uses a lot of mulch and some blood and bone, but very little fertiliser. He told us that we should be careful to select the right variety of Rhodo for our climate - later flowering where it’s more frost prone. While Rhodos like shade, they also like plenty of sun. We all enjoyed his talk, followed by lovely hot soup and savouries. Those attending continued to chat to him, while looking through the lovely books about Rhododendrons that he had brought along.

A good time was had by all on a cool day.

This is the year Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade (SVFB) holds its biennial fundraising Mud Plug 4 x 4 event, which is planned to take place on Sunday, September 24th.

It’s a fun and entertaining family friendly day with lots of thrills and spills. Attendance is recommended by many in the district, as it is an event not to be missed.

Already, at the time of going to print, organisers have twentysix participants entered for the day, and they hail from as far away as Nelson, through to Timaru. They are however, able to accommodate a total of forty entrants and are still accepting entries.

The event is a huge hit with

spectators and competitors alike, with lots of action both on and off the course. One of the event organisers and SVFB Fire Chief, Nev Croy said, “spectators can expect to see a lot of mud flying and exciting on-course action.”

Both Malvern Lions and the Sheffield Township Committee will be there on the day selling food and there will also be a coffee van on site selling hot drinks - always helpful if the weather is cooler.

“I would advise spectators to bring their gumboots and a jacket to keep warm,” Nev added.

The event is weather dependent and if can’t go ahead then it will be moved to the following

weekend. It is really important to the organisers that they keep damage to the farmland at a minimum while getting people out to the course, so rain before the event starts could see a possible postponement.

The SVFB are aware of the health and safety elements involved in arranging such an event, not only for drivers, but also for spectators, and they have been planning accordingly.

They ask that people remain behind the taped areas and to listen to the event marshalls at all times.

As this is a family friendly event, the organisers request that people do not bring alcohol along and that they leave their dogs at home.

The funds raised from this event will go toward the purchase of a light response four wheel drive vehicle for the Brigade.

Selwyn District Council Meeting Wednesday, August 9th.

Consultation on speed limit changes.

The Council has agreed to put out for public consultation, proposed speed limit changes, which would introduce lower speed limits on a number of roads across the district.

The proposals include extending 50 and 70 km/hr zones on the outskirts of several townships, and introducing an 80 km/hr

limit on rural roads adjoining the Christchurch city boundary, including Maddisons Road, and extending out to Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Rolleston. The 80 km/hr speed limit on rural roads in the Prebbleton area would also be extended out to Lincoln and Rolleston.

The roads reviewed included those requested by residents, committees and councillors, as well as others identified by staff.

Townships where lower speed limits are proposed to be extended include: Castle Hill, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston, Rolleston Izone, and West Melton. The proposed changes are expected to go out for public consultation in September.

Trevor went on to mention the Club highlights throughout the years: • 2004 - 2007 Raewyn supported husband Gary as President and was instrumental in getting the Club silver status membership with SPARC, an organisation that promotes better Club efficiency and organisation.

Having silver status was a huge benefit for future funding applications from various charities.

Along with a supporting committee Raewyn was the driving force in the setting up of the annual pre-season Rippa Rugby gatherings and the senior men’s Ten’s Tournament.

2007 Raewyn was a member of the building committee elected to move forward the construction of the proposed Rugby Clubroom an d Changing Room facility and took on the fund raising role.

Numerous other projects within the Club have also benefitted from Raewyn’s grant applications and fundraising expertise.

2007 saw Raewyn elected to the Kirwee Reserve Board to help the Rugby Club move the proposed building project (construction began in 2010) through the Council and she remains on that committee as Chairperson.

“Most rugby days you will find Raewyn working in the bar or in the kitchen assisting with the preparation of food and generally helping the Club run efficiently,” Trevor commented, and she now joins husband Gary on the honours board, as the first female Life Member,” he concluded.

Potholes breed like rabbits in the rain! After the recent flooding across the district roadusers may have noticed an increased number of potholes appearing on Selwyn roads.

Selwyn District Council staff are working to fix these but with around 2,500 kilometres of roads in Selwyn it’s hard for staff to stay on top of every stretch of road. Everyone can help the Council by reporting a pothole to their team so that they are aware of it and can then take steps to repair it.

There are a number of ways people can do this.

What a day for shooting!

Strong Nor-Westers buffeted the club grounds and allowed the targets to jump and dive willynilly. Some shooters coped well but others struggled to even get close to hitting the targets.

An early call to afternoon tea allowed the wind to calm in time for the Deuville Doubles and a good end to the day’s events.
