Last weekend saw the Ellesmere Division One grand final take place with flanker Blair (aka Sheep) McIlroy playing his 200th game for the Darfield Rugby Senior side.

“It’s been a great Club to be a part of,” Blair commented, “with some really great people.”

Blair joined twin brother Scott McIlroy in the Darfield 200 Club with Scott reaching the milestone a few weeks ago.

Although this was without a doubt a special game for Blair, he admitted he was perhaps more focussed on getting his hands on the Coleman Shield.

Sadly on this occasion it wasn’t to be as they went down by one point at the very end of the game.

“We went into the game as the underdogs having lost to Southbridge a couple of weeks ago and while it would’ve been awesome to win - I guess we now don’t need to recover from the week long party that would've followed,” Blair said

with a smile.

Blair was very proud of the team’s achievements this season and is determined to return next season for another attempt at the Coleman Shield.

Now that he has this 200th Senior game milestone under his belt Blair is looking forward to playing for Buller again in the upcoming Heartland Championship.

Blair a qualified builder, lives and works in Darfield running his own company constructing building foundations, but since 2010 he's been a firm fixture in the Buller side in the Heartland Championship.

“This is the sixth year of playing for Buller and I have played over fifty games for them including last year’s Meads Cup final against Wanganui which we lost narrowly.”

He thanked his wife Kelly for her support which allowed him to play for Buller, as well as her care of their son Jack, Jack who turns two this month.

‘A Barrel of Laughs’ New Zealand’s favourite radio presenter and funny guy Gary McCormick returns to Melton Estate to present ‘A Barrel of Laughs' as part of their local Winery Lunch and Comedy Show on Sunday, August 20th.

Bookings Essential Anyone who attended the Waitangi Day Picnic held at the Darfield Recreation Reserve, may well have had a hand in creating this magnificent quilt (pictured)!

Darfield quilt and needlework group 'The Material Girls' were there, encouraging members of the public to have a go at joining the pieces of fabric together using sewing machines. After the top was completed, local professional quilter Bronwyn Hamilton of 'Quilts and Quilting' finished the piece off with a beautiful all-over quilting design. Once completed, it was displayed in the Darfield Library, and locals

were asked to nominate a deserving person to receive the quilt. So many people were nominated that it was impossible to decide, and a draw was made.

The winners were Alan and Alison Faichnie of Coalgate.

They were nominated by neighbours Yolande and Jerome Ruiters in appreciation for the help and support given after moving into the area, while having their own health issues.

The Material Girls would like to thank everyone who participated in sewing and the nominating process.

“The nominations received made it clear that there are a lot

of great people in our community doing wonderful things and we would have loved to have given away more quilts,” said Sharon Kellock on behalf of the Material Girls.

“Our journey to being a wateronly school started last year when I heard that other schools throughout New Zealand were implementing this policy as part of developing healthy habits for their students,” explained Glentunnel Primary School principal Dion Stechmann.

Stechmann He thought the idea would definitely be beneficial for the Glentunnel students and so discussed it with staff and the board of trustees. This was positively received and so the next step was to consult the school community through their weekly newsletter. Parents were informed about why the School wanted to implement the policy and given the opportunity to vote yes or no, as well as to provide feedback on their decision.

“The feedback from parents was unanimous,” Dion commented. “The idea was fully supported and we received very positive comments about becoming a water-only school.

It was clear everyone was thinking that this was a positive move for our students.”

Over the last two years, through Glentunnel School’s learning focuses, students have been made aware of the benefits of drinking water and the effects of high-sugar drinks through investigations they have done

“This was unpacked further when looking at how eating and drinking choices influence our ability to focus for long periods and learn,” Dion added. “The students deve loped an understanding of why these choices are important to their learning.”

In term two and three of this year the local Glentunnel Store supported the direction the school was heading by not advertising or allowing sugary drinks as an option with Friday’s hot lunches.

“It has been great to have their support with implementing this policy,” Dion said.

“For us at Glentunnel School being a water-only school means that we are developing a policy around promoting healthy options and allowing water and low fat, plain, milk (Milk in Schools product) as the only drink options. In the first week of this term we notified our community of the feedback we had received and of the new water-only policy at our School.

I encourage other education providers to investigate this as an option for their students.

The Darfield Rams Netball Team was recently the grateful recipient of warm hoodies thanks to Mike Pero Real Estate (West Melton) agents, Steph Kimber and Heather Clouston.

Clouston Steph and Heather were happy to hand out the sponsored hoodies to the team last Saturday. The hoodies feature the girls’ chosen nicknames, along with the Mike Pero logo and offered warmth, especially as Saturday was particularly

frosty.

“They looked great and the team presented a unified front as they warmed up, ready to take the court,” Steph commented.

Steph and Heather both thank the girls, their parents and the coach Filipa Payne for the opportunity to sponsor the team and look forward to seeing the Mike Pero hoodies being worn with pride both on and off the courts.

Greendale School has recently purchased a new Springfree Trampoline. This was made possible by lots of hard work from the children who fundraised fifty percent of the money required to buy it, while the balance was gratefully donated by the School’s PTA. The project was initiated by Daniel Pooler a Year 6 student at Greendale School.

The children raised funds in a variety of ways which included picking up rubbish at Field Days, bagging and selling sheep manure, selling salamis, along with a second-hand book and toy sale.

Needless to say the Greendale School children are very proud of their efforts and think the trampoline is awesome!

After many, many months of planning, the Darfield Plunket and Toy Library committee are pleased to see the renovations beginning this week on the Plunket Rooms at 1 Halkett Street, Darfield.

When the Darfield Plunket and Toy Library committee was formed back in November 2015 they set themselves a goal to improve the Rooms and make them a more user friendly space for parents and their babies.

The rooms are used for the Plunket nurse appointments, the toy library and also for services such as parent education classes and allimportant-new-mums’ coffee mornings. These mornings go a long way toward helping parents meet others in the area.

“The new rooms will give us more space to host bigger groups and hopefully even have some more services added, with poss ib le op tio ns b ei ng midwifery, evening parent classes and more,” said a committee spokesperson Ainsley Bell.

local effort thus far and a huge thanks to Rob Frew for assistance with the plans and gaining resource consent and also to our very patient builder, Bodie Seymour,” Seymour Ainsley added.

“We were also given a very generous donation from the Malvern Lions (following their recent sponsored annual Golf Tournament) to kick start our project. We solely rely on grants and fundraising to be able to complete this improvement to the Rooms and hope any interested parties in the area that are able to assist with donations or grants, will get in contact with us.”

Because of the renovations the Toy Library has moved to the rooms at the Darfield Pool, on the corner of Cardale and Ross Streets, while Plunket Nurse Wendy is working out of the Kirwee School Dental clinic.

“We are already starting to plan an open day when the renovations are complete and look forward to seeing old and new Plunket families come down for a look,” Ainsley added.

In the meantime families can keep up to date with what's happening on the Darfield Plunket and Toy Library Facebook page.

GORGEOUS COTTAGE FOR SALE Last Saturday the Springfield Youth Group held a bonfire and sausage sizzle to celebrate their first anniversary. The sausage sizzle also raised funds which will go towards activities and equipment for the Group.

“In the past year, we have raised funds splitting fire wood,” said Emily White one of the Group’s members, who added with a laugh “we kids doing all the hard work while a few adults stood around!”

The money raised from these enterprises pays for days-out for the Group and to date the

Monday, July 31st began like any other school day for Darfield Primary School’s new principal Meredith Devonald.

Unfortunately for Meredith and Maia, Maia one of her students, the day ended a lot sooner than planned, with a rescue and transportation in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Sadly, Maia, had a broken leg after a fall on the ski field and it was decided that the best course of action was to transport her by helicopter to Christchurch Public Hospital.

Meredith went along to act ‘in loco parentis’ until they were able to meet Maia’s parents at the hospital.

Once the helicopter crew learnt that they were both from Darfield Primary School, and that it was only Meredith’s sixth day as Principal of the school, the flight crew flew over the school and the township. This created great excitement for the children attending school and

The local community turned out in droves to celebrate the opening of their new facility.

The building replaces the original Dunsandel Community Hall, which was located in the township and demolished after being damaged beyond repair in the 2010/2011 earthquakes.

Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton, Broughton commented that a project like this doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t happen by accident. It takes a lot of planning and contributions from a number of people.

“This beautiful building is a testament to the dedication of the community, who raised a total of $350,000 in donations, as well as generous

contributions from Rata Foundation and The New Zealand Lottery Grants Board,” Sam said. “The $3.9 million Community Centre will be a fantastic asset to the Dunsandel area.”

The Hon Amy Adams MP performed the ribbon cutting.

The Mayor, Dunsandel Community Committee chair Russell Dalzell, Dalzell and committee member and former Selwyn District Council Councillor Nigel Barnett spoke to those.

The new Community Centre is a multi-purpose facility which will be used by sporting and community groups, businesses, and for events.

Ezra Bush from Dances for Schools came to West Melton School on August, 4th and spent the whole day with the School community teaching their learners how to move and groove.

On August, 2nd, West Melton School sent 74 learners in 7 teams to compete at the Selwyn Central Rugby and Netball Tournament in Rolleston. Even though the weather turned and the rain came down, most of their teams were lucky to finish all their games. The Selwyn Youth Council has launched a new Youth Project Fund.

The fund is available to provide support for groups or individuals whose projects, events or activities contribute to the strengthening of youth wellbeing in Selwyn.

The total available fund established by the Youth Council for 2017/18 is $5,500 plus GST. Ella McClure, McClure Chair of the Selwyn District Youth Council, said the discretionary fund is one of the first of its kind in New Zealand local government. “T he allocation and administration of the funds is completely at the discretion of the Youth Council, for the benefit of our peers in the district,” she said.

The Youth Council will assess the applications and distribute

the funds as they see appropriate at their monthly meetings. Selwyn Youth Council meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month (except January). Applications must be submitted by the 20th

Colgate and TerraCycle are calling all primary schools in New Zealand to take part in the 2017 Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures (BSBF) recycling competition.

The BSBF programme aims to educate children on good oral care habits and also includes information on how to help the environment through recycling all while offering schools the chance to win a $1,000 cash prize and a recycled park bench made of actual oral care waste.

The competition is part of the existing Colgate Oral Care Recycling Programme, which is a joint initiative between recycling company TerraCycle and Colgate-Palmolive that allows New Zealand schools to

recycle their oral care waste for free through New Zealand Post.

Accepted items include toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and caps, floss containers and outer packaging, which are recycled into sustainable products such as the park bench being awarded in the competition.

For every used oral care item collected, a donation of two cents will be made to the participating school. Colgate will also award $1,000 and a recycled park bench, customised with the children’s drawings, to the school that has registered to receive BSBF education kits and sends in the most oral care waste before November 1st 2017.

The BSBF education kit is a curriculum-based resource that has been developed by teachers and dental professionals to encourage students to take responsibility for their own oral health. The programme DVD shows mascot, Dr. Rabbit, and the Tooth Defenders encouraging children to save ‘Tooth City’ from the evil villain, Placulus, by adopting healthy habits such as brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and limiting the frequency of snacking.

received BSBF education kits find a guide on how to engage students with the recycling programme, a poster to track each classroom’s collections, ‘recycling champions’ stickers to give to students who bring in waste, and a letter to inform parents of the school’s initiative.

Since the BSBF recycling competition launched in February 2015, over 39,000 units of oral care waste have been collected by primary schools in New Zealand alone.

There are currently over 200 schools participating across the country.

Belmont Primary School in Auckland was the winner of the 2016 BSBF competition, collecting an impressive 4,405 units - or nearly 40 kilograms of oral care waste. The school was awarded $1,000 for its efforts, which will go towards existing environmental activities at the school.

Schools' Peace Week (held between August 7th and 11th - the date is chosen to commemorate the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945) is an Aotearoa-based, international week of activities, organised by the Peace Foundation. The Week is aimed at celebrating the work that students do in their own schools and neighbourhoods to create peaceful, supportive communities that young people can thrive in.

2017 is an especially important year for Schools' Peace Week, as it is also the thirtieth anniversary of New Zealand's Nuclear Free Zone Act. As such, the Schools' Peace Week theme for 2017 is: ‘Aotearoa New Zealand - 30 years Nuclear Free’. Overall, peace groups, schools and students across the country are getting involved in peace and disarmament education and celebrating New Zealand's success as a peacemaking nation and a world leader in nuclear disarmament. At Darfield High School and under the guidance of teacher Camille Cartman, Cartman students had the end of term holidays to decide what they would like to do to celebrate this thirtieth event by paying tribute to the past, while taking ownership of a nuclear free New Zealand for their generation. The Peace Foundation developed an informative toolkit for primary and secondary schools with activity ideas, some background info about the

theme and its relevance, and inspirations from past Peace Weeks. It was hoped this would make the planning of events a little easier for those pupils from Darfield who were participating, and demonstrate the ways schools can celebrate peace in their classrooms and communities.

Darfield High School is one of the 124 schools from New Zealand and overseas registered for the event.

Apart from New Zealand, this year there are five countries involved: Germany, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Burkina Faso and Burundi. Schools in New Zealand can start up a pen-pal friendship or even hold a Skype call to share views about peace with international participants.

This legislation shaped the identity of New Zealand as a peace nation, both nationally and internationally. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, people from many different social backgrounds united as part of a nationwide anti-nuclear movement which lead to this l a w . The n uc l e a r - fr e e movement is still alive among the next generation.

The students participating in Schools’ Peace Week this August will proudly celebrate New Zealand’s leadership for a

nuclear-free world through their projects for peace.

Primary school students will make lanterns, design peace symbols, fold paper cranes and plant sunflowers to support the Treaty and honour the victims of nuclear weapons. Secondary school students will watch films about NZ’s nuclear-free inspiring history and have an opportunity to meet the New Zealanders who helped the ban happen. They will also hold a UN debate, and roleplay on a nuclear crisis in their classrooms and take peace walks around their communities.

By centreing its theme around the thirtieth anniversary of nuclear-free legislation in New Zealand, Schools’ Peace Week highlights this critical issue and gives new momentum to disarmament education in New Zealand and globally.
