The Sheffield Primary School PTA have done it again and produced another wellorganised, well-attended and much-enjoyed event with the presentation of their 2017 Red Carpet Ball.

Friday, July 21st saw Mother Nature again delivering the PTA a curve ball (having snowed the aptly named Winter Wonderland event on to another date in 2015!) when many areas around the district were flooded.

Organisers were understandably delighted and amazed at how many people made it out to the evening and were ready to have a great night on Saturday, July 22nd.

This year creativity was at the fore and clearly visible in the outfits worn and fashioned for the Ball. Sarah Wright’s mother sewed her glamorous gown while Debs Abraham showed her talent by making her own dress. Kerri Booth designed her

dress from men's neck-ties and her mother created it for her.

Rhonda Molloy cast her magic on the Springfield Hall and it was transformed into a stunning red carpet event

scene a real Hollywood feel. It was cleverly used as a way to display all the local supporters and sponsors of the evening.

The general vibe throughout the hall was that people were there to have a good time and enjoy getting out for an evening after a few rough weeks of weather.

A bluebird day on the mountain and the Super Rugby semi finals resulted in smaller numbers than expected at the 2017 New Zealand Mountain Film Festival South Island premiere held at Darfield High School Hall on July, 29th. However, the folks that came along all enjoyed themselves and locals Deane Parker from Hororata and Sam Jones from Springfield received positive feedback from those who attended on the day.

roaring trade in popcorn and ever-popular Hororata Cafe, sausage rolls. A raffle was also held, with the prize of a season pass to Porters Ski Area that was won by Stefan Fairweather, Fairweather a prize much appreciated by the keen skier.

The movie selection was truly epic, but the film that won the most applause was definitely Waiau-toa Odyssey featuring Deane and Sam, telling the story of a group of mates setting off on a six day, 300 kilometre

unsupported journey. By combining the new bike-packing and pack-rafting technology (inflatable, white-water capable, one person rafts which can be packed down and carried), they travel from St Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes, through to Kekerengu on the East Coast, connecting backcountry tracks and white water rivers through remote parts of the Marlborough wilderness.

Deane and Sam offered a massive thanks to Gnomes Alpine Sports, Malvern Air Conditioning and Porters Ski Area for their invaluable sponsorship.

Funds raised from the event will go towards the Hororata School ski day, allowing children to experience skiing who may not otherwise have been able to.

“Depression and Anxiety are the ‘modern endemics’ sweeping our society,” said Katie Snyder and Kerry Gosset, who are again facilitating their effective Depression Recovery course in the area.

The effects of Depression and Anxiety are miserable. Low functionality, low mood, deep sadness and feelings of emptiness are but a few of the constellation of symptoms. At worst the ‘black dog’ as it has come to be known, is life threatening and at best it robs a person of the joy of life and affects their work and relationships.

“But what if something could be done to help a person actually recover from these debilitating illnesses? What if there really was a ‘way out’ and what would that look like?”

Dr Neil Nedley in his book ‘Depression, The Way Out’ espouses exactly that. An internal medicine Physician living in Weimar California, Dr Nedley set himself a goal, to find the causes of the disease and any treatments that would

be effective in helping a person recover. He found over one hundred of each and began to apply them to those of his own patients complaining of these debilitating illnesses. “Simple lifestyle treatments such as a regular exercise programme, adding nutrition for the brain and addressing our thinking,” Katie and Kerry added.

In a short time Dr Nedley’s patients all reported feeling better and it was then that he knew he was on to something.

He recommends throwing an ‘all fronts attack’ at the causes that are operative and once they are removed, depression and anxiety begin to improve. Katie and Kerry are international trainers for Depression and Anxiety Recovery Programmes.

They facilitate them locally with great success.

“So if you are prone to visits from the ‘black dog’ and would like to pursue options for recovery we would love to see you at an information session,” the pair concluded.

Darfield Hospital - back in the day.

An ‘Open Afternoon’ is to be held at Darfield Hospital on Sunday, October 29th to cel ebr ate t he n in et iet h anniversary of the opening of the hospital, which took place in 1927.

The hospital which initially comprised four maternity beds and a casualty ward, was built

by W Beanland and Sons at a cost of three thousand five hundred and ninety nine pounds and ten shillings, and officially opened on May 27th, 1927 by Mrs D. McMillan the wife of the local representative on the North Canterbury Hospital Board.

Early records show that at least nineteen babies were born at the hospital during the year of 1927. The Friends of Darfield Hospital would welcome the attendance of any people who were born at the hospital during the early years, or any information as to their whereabouts today - see the advertisement in this issue for contact details.

During the afternoon those present, will be able to take a guided walk through parts of the hospital building, and enjoy the attr active gard ens, afternoon tea and musical entertainment.

The Friends plan to have some

stalls, hold a short auction and sell tickets in their Christmas Raffle, to raise extra valuable funds for hospital projects.

Those from the wider district are cordially invited to help the Friends celebrate this notable milestone. Further information will be provided as preparations for the day are finalised.

Just twenty months after Helloworld Rolleston opened its doors, its staff enjoyed the inaugural Gala Evening held in Christchurch on Saturday, July 29th. Kirwee locals Paul and Sue Robinson, Robinson owners of the Rolleston store also hosted other staff from their stores in Wanganui and Blenheim for the event.

“We had thirteen of our sixteen staff join the Helloworld Gala evening and it was amazing to share in the success of the brand, and our stores. Three of our staff - one in each store were awarded ‘Gold Seller’. In Rolleston that recipient was our Team Leader Rebecca Gilbert,” Gilbert Sue explained.

“Rolleston was also awarded Most Improved Store for Singapore Airlines, with a

special mention from Air NZ on our success. We have always said we are here to serve our community and in receiving these awards we honour the trust and custom given to us by this community.”

Following the success of the brand in the Selwyn Region, Helloworld recently opened its satellite office in Darfield, located in the Malvern Business Hub on South Terrace.

“We recognise locals like to deal with locals and having the office manned during school hours Monday to Friday, opens the world to those who don’t want to go to Rolleston,” Sue added.

The next focus for Sue and her team is on the awards night to be held on September 30th where the company is a finalist for the National Travel Industry

award - Best Brand Retail Agency - Multi Location.

Sue travelled to Auckland on Wednesday, August 2nd to present to the judging panel of industry experts. “Having three branches geographically spread out has definitely had its challenges, but we are extremely proud of our teams and our nomination is a tribute to them and their hard work.

Win or lose, we are honoured to be considered one of the top three multi locations in the country. That speaks volumes,” she ended.

Lincoln Envirotown’s prestigious Responsible Business Awards are now being looked at and undertaken by local businesses.

The Awards are aimed at encouraging businesses to consider their practices in terms of Environmental and Community responsibilities.

Over the eight years that these have been run, there have been incredible developments. Over 150 businesses have taken part and whilst the scheme started in Lincoln, it soon grew to encompass other areas. This year, for the first time it will be undertaken throughout Selwyn.

Four assessors have been appointed to go through the process with all businesses in the District who indicate a wish to participate. This is an exciting development which presents the opportunity for businesses to see how they compare with a greater range of others.

Businesses over the years have been making such speedy improvements that the Awards have had to develop rapidly to keep up with their excellent business practices. Initially businesses were awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold level. It soon became obvious that businesses were up for higher challenges and Platinum and Diamond awards were added.

Businesses rose to these challenges so effectively that the decision was made to introduce a more comprehensive and far reaching survey and process. The Lincoln University Department of Financial and Businesses systems spent the last year working on this project which has now been launched.

Another change to the survey is that it is completed online. This is intended to make it more user friendly, but does present

challenges for both assessors and participants. The Responsible Business Coordinator and the Assessors are working to overcome any ‘teething problems’ and look forward to another enjoyable few months conducting the process and the Awards Evenings in late October.

Central Plains Water Limited have contracted Downer NZ to construct Stage 2 of their scheme.

To irrigate over 20,000 hec t ar e s of l a nd w i th pressurised water the project is constructing twelve pump stations, three pressure reducing valves, 131 turnouts, and laying 22km of glass reinforced plastic (GRP) pipe and 183km of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. This work will involve up to 300 people and is to be completed

by September 2018 for the start of the irrigation season.

Stage 2 follows the successful installation of Stage 1, which includes the canal running from the Rakaia River to Leaches Road and 130km of HDPE pipe servicing 20,000 hectares of land.

Stage 2 joins the canal with the 2,500mm diameter GRP pipe and a network of pipe will stretch north to the Old West Coast Road, east to West Melton and south to Greendale.

The HDPE pipe, which ranges in size from 150mm to 1400mm diameter, is being manufactured in the area. Tubi have come from Australia with their mobile plant which will be set up in three locations over the

duration of the project. The first site on Coaltrack Road has completed manufacturing pipe.

The second site has just been set up on Miles Road just east of Darfield. In November the site will move a third time, south to Courtenay Road. These sites are chosen to reduce the distances pipe is transported for installation and to avoid major roads. Steel and Tube, who have a plant on Te Pirita Road, are also to manufacture some of the HDPE pipe. The pipe is made in 100 metre lengths and welded on site before being lifted into the excavated trench.

The trench is immediately filled in and the land reinstated. Grass seed will be sown in spring.

On Plantation Road the GRP pipe, that has been shipped from Australia, is being stored.

This is the very large pipe ranging in size from 1600mm to 2500mm in diameter which forms the spine of the Stage 2 system. Due to the size of these pipes large machinery such as an 85 tonne excavator will be used. A specially designed vacuum lifter is used to move this large and heavy pipe.

Construction of Stage 2 of the CPW scheme is well under way with many active sites. This includes two separate sites

HDPE pipe, 400mm diameter, being lifted into the newly excavated trench.

installing the HDPE pipe, three sites installing the large GRP pipe, and construction at the Intake (beside the Rakaia River) and the Offtake near Leaches Road.

Progress to date: The HDPE crew have laid 14000m of pipe between the two crews.

Pipe has been installed: • Up Coaltrack Road from Ridgens Road to Bealey Road and along to Lambs Road.

• Alongside Plantation Road to Scotts Road.

Pipe is now coming down Coaltrack Road from Beattys Road heading south to Bealey Road.

• The GRP crew have laid over 3,000m of pipe over the three sites: - Heading east from the canal near Leaches Road - Either side of Struie Road, off Greendale Road.

Each of the GRP sites have a fleet of machinery including a 45T excavator with vacuum lifter, 20T excavator, 9T excavator which is in the deep excavation and pushes the GRP pipes together, two scrapers and both off road and road trucks. The GRP pipe currently being installed ranges between 2500mm to 2200mm in diameter.

The HDPE sites use smaller machinery and excavate the pipe trench with a chain trencher. All sites aim to work within a site of about 500m long that starts with topsoil removal and finishes with the reinstatement of the soil.

Downer are aware that there is an increase in vehicles on the road not only with the crew and machinery, but also with transporting pipe to site. The HDPE pipe is made in 100m lengths and towed by a tractor.

This becomes a long and very slow vehicle and Downer ask that public be patient.

The Titans with the senior premier grade team during a break at the Hurunui tournament recently.

The Springfield Sheffield Netball Club (SSNC) has four teams entered into the Malvern Netball competition this year, as well as contributing players to a fifth.

They field senior teams in both the premier and premier reserve grades, and two Year 7/8 Future Ferns teams, the Titans in the senior grade and the AB’s in the intermediate grade. The Club also have players in the South Malvern Year 5/6 Malvern Hills Magic team as well.

This year the Club began the season struggling for numbers in all grades and it seemed there would be only one senior team and one Future Ferns

team. The SSNC committee worked hard to recruit players across all grades and although they started the season with the bare minimum in most teams, extra players have come on board throughout the season.

SSNC premier team has had an excellent season so far, with only two losses all season and they are strong competition to come up against on the court.

‘Nexteam’ the Club’s premier reserve team, is made up from social grade players and expremier players and they too are strong competition on the court, with the combination of 'old heads' and 'young legs'.

The senior grade Year 7/8 Future Ferns team, the Titans, consists of a great group of girls who all have varying amounts of netball experience and who have come together as a wonderful team.

The Future Ferns intermediate grade Year 7/8 team, the Abs, are full of energy and are an enthusiastic group of players.

They have improved their netball skills throughout the

season and are enjoying playing each Saturday.

The Year 5/6 combined team, Malvern Hills Magic, are loving learning about netball in the six a side competition held each week.

On July 23rd the Club was fortunate to have their senior team and the Titans invited to play in the Hurunui tournament, Both teams enjoyed the challenge of playing against teams from outside the district.

The SSNC committee runs a regular meat raffle at the Sheffield Hotel every Friday night, with the funds raised going towards running the Club, including the purchasing of new uniforms and equipment. Each family is rostered to come and sell raffle tickets, and the whole event has become a great opportunity for catching up with many senior players. The committee has a monthly meeting to keep the Club running smoothly throughout the netball season.

They have two training grounds for the teams, with the senior teams training together under the lights at Springfield Domain.

The Year 7/8 teams meet at Sheffield School, where they have been very kindly allowed to practice each week. As with any club, they wouldn't be able to run without the mountain of volunteers, from committee members to coaches and managers and not to forget the parents who get their children where they need to be for training and games. The Club thanks everyone for their time, support and commitment.

For those wanting a toe-tapping night of music, superb entertainment and a lot of laughter, the legendary country singer with the ‘Big Voice’ Brendan Dugan rides into Oxford on Saturday, September 9th for a Country Galaxy of Musical Talent show at the Oxford Working Men’s Club.

Brendan needs no introduction to music fans having won television’s ‘New Faces’ show in 1968 before becoming a star overnight. Recording contracts and number one albums followed with tours to the USA and an appearance on the Grand Old Opry. Brendan was voted New Zealand Entertainer of the Year on two occasions

and also appeared in numerous television shows including the much loved ‘That’s Country’.

Also appearing with Brendan will be his dad Pat, Pat the ‘Godfather of Country Music’ and it’s reported he still sings like a bird at a sprightly 91 years of age.

“I love the stage and the stuff I sing,” Pat, who is a legend and a show in himself, commented.

Featuring on the Oxford performance bill will also be the lively entertainment of Andy Gilmore, Gilmore a guitar twanging, super vocalist, and award winner at the 2008 Gore Golden Guitar Awards.

The Oxford Show is planned to run for two and half hours and

to be chock-full of the songs everyone loves, along with oodles of laughs and humour.

On July 17th Darfield Preschool and Nursery held a hangi to fundraise for Oliver Spence who has recently been diagnosed with cancer.

“We were very fortunate that we had families and local businesses help by providing vegetables and meat,” said a Preschool & Nursery spokesperson.

The children, teachers and parents helped prepare the food for the hangi before everyone watched it go into the ground and be covered up.

“We had invited our families to

come along at 5pm to watch the hangi being brought up steaming and sm elling delicious. The children performed the Matariki Macarena and E Rere Taku poi for our guests before saying a karakia for dinner.”

Everyone pronounced the food as absolutely delicious and it was a great social occasion to get Preschool & Nursery families together. Funds raised from the evening will go to the Spence family to assist and support them during a tough time.

The 24th annual Malvern Game Hunters compe on, held last weekend, saw approximately the same number of registra ons as last year.

208 hunters bagged a good number of large, impressive animals for the weigh in on Sunday at the Coalgate Tavern, which saw a lot of people from all over the South Island aYending.

Winter has arrived and our gardens feel they are under siege… plenty of rain, so much rain many gardens have been flooded, snow and hail showers, but that did not stop many of the Darfield Garden Club members from entering displays in their monthly meeting. Considering the weather it was a delight to see so many exhibits and a wonderful selection, a ray of sunshine on a rather damp day.

Lovely to see many members attend and we were rewarded by listening to our guest speaker Alan Mathewson from The Hazelnut company in West Melton. Alan covered the history of the company going from a co-operative, to now being a privately owned company; expanding the number of trees, plus shifting and building a larger building so that processing can be done more easily. There are many other products that have been generated from the nut, obviously the favourite is a plain nut, but now the company produces Hazelnut Butter, oil, flour and use a chocolatier in Governor's Bay to coat the nut. Many products had been brought for sampling and to purchase. Gorgeous to see how versatile the Hazelnut is with all these products.

Our meeting closed with thoughts of more winter weather to come and gardening may be limited, however we look forward to the August meeting where we will welcome members from the Broadfield Garden Club, always a pleasure to meet with other enthusiastic gardeners.
