DEADLINE FOR NEXT WEEK: 10am - Tuesday
While last week’s excessive rain caused a massive headache for many in the area - and near disaster for some as well - it also brought a smile to tourism operators and ski fields in the region. Many local townships rely on passing trade from skiers and visitors and the massive snow dump on surrounding ski fields ensures the season will attract even more folk to the district. Emergency services and contractors were out in force over the worst two days of the disaster - rescuing people and stock, digging out threatening streams and water-races and pumping/draining where they could. It was cold, wet work and many were performing it as volunteers! Selwyn District Council lifted the Civil Defence State of Emergency in Selwyn district on Monday morning and Selwyn Civil Defence local controller Douglas Marshall commented that although river levels had lowered at that time and most roads throughout the district reopened, residents should be aware of remaining hazards. There are many new potholes on the roads throughout the district and residents can report these and any other roading issues via the Council Helpline or by using the Snap, Send, Solve app. “This was a significant flood event which required a swift response from the Council and I’m grateful to all volunteers as well as staff and contractors who worked in very difficult conditions. Thank you, also, to the Selwyn residents who cooperated with officials during evacuations and others who provided local updates and assistance through our network of volunteers,” Douglas said.
Greendale Golf Course will need substantial drying out after it was flooded by a torrent of water.
