Ex-local boy and Hurricanes’ lock Mark Abbott, Abbott experienced the opportunity of a lifetime recently when he played against the Lions during their recent tour of New Zealand.

Until moving out of the area, Mark’s father Chris Abbott was well known in the community for his work in the local Real Estate market. Mark was born in Christchurch and raised in Darfield, leaving the area and heading north after finishing university, to try and earn a contract with a provincial team, which he quickly accomplished.

In 2014 Mark made his debut for the Hurricanes in Dunedin, and since then his rugby career has gone from strength to strength.

This led to the ultimate game on June, 27th when he played in the team that took on the visiting Lions.

“It was an unbelievable, once in a lifetime, experience, the crowd was immense,” Mark said “As a team we knew we had to step up to have any chance of playing well against a fully international team, and we feel that we did.”

Mark’s own eighty minute performance was exceptional, especially as he was just back from a few weeks off the field with concussion. When the final whistle blew, the teams had

drawn, with a final score of 31-31.

Mark said, “although it was reasonably satisfying to achieve the draw, we felt we had the chance to win it, but couldn't quite get over the line. The Lions’ players loved the niggle and ferocity.”

Mark enjoyed his experience playing alongside the Lions team and said, “they were top blokes off the field, a humble group of guys.”

It’s the final week of rehearsals for the forthcoming Kirwee Players’ stage production of The Full Monty. So it’s all hands on deck for the cast of 25, band of eleven and crew of another twenty, with daily rehearsals in the build up to opening night.

The story follows the lives of six men and their families after being made redundant from their jobs at the local steel mill.

“Set in modern times, the musical comedy follows the same issues we all experience in our own personal lives and

relationships, with a bit of extra cheek thrown in,” laughed Kirwee Players spokesperson, Courtney Hyde.

Hyde This year Kirwee Players has attracted some amazing new talent from Selwyn’s evergrowing district, but some of the much-loved, very-familiar faces, seen on the Kirwee stage over the years, are also back performing.

“This musical has something for everyone, with plenty of laughs, amazing music, talented cast and the usual Kirwee Players community passion,” Courtney concluded.

On Sunday, July 9th, 69 riders from the Christchurch Hunt Club enjoyed a glass of bubbles and a full cooked breakfast at the Kirwee Tavern before they, their mounts and the pack of hounds made their way through the township. They were heading to Ravelston, for the last cross country ride behind the hounds for the Hunt season.

“This was the beginning of a very busy week with the hunt’s closing meet on the Tuesday prior at Mark and Emma Sampson’s Apsley Farm. This attracted more than 140 riders.

The day started out with lovely fine conditions before the southerly storm hit with a

vengeance,” commented Dave McConchie, Christchurch Hunt McConchie Club spokesperson.

“Fortunately we were in the shed eating afternoon tea and having our prize giving ceremony when the rain and sleet came in and the horses were all washed and rugged up warmly.

“On the Wednesday, we attended the South Island Hound Show, hosted by Brackenfield Hunt at the Sefton Domain in bitterly cold

conditions. That was our very successful 2017 season completed with only two cancellations,” Dave commented.

“Cong ratu lat ion s go to huntsman Dave Ferriman, Ferriman on the completion of his 44th season.

“We are very grateful for the hospitality extended to us from those host farmers that allow us to pursue our sport over their land,” Dave concluded.

‘Space To Enjoy’

1/153 Bangor Road, Darfield Rebel Youth is a group of ten dancers aged between ten and thirteen years of age who dance with West Auckland's, Dancebeat Academy. They recently won first place in their division at the National Hip Hop Unite Competition in Wellington and have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Hip Hop Unite World Championships to be held in Holland during October this year.

The opportunity to dance on a world stage is rare, and the Rebel Youth performers have worked hard to get this far.

Amongst them is talented local dancer Manaia Davies from Glentunnel, who has not only made a name for herself as a member of Rebel Youth, but trains with three different crews, all from different studios, as well as teaching three classes a week for Springfield’s Danzfit.

Manaia competed for all three studios at Hip Hop Unite in Wellington at the end of June and qualified in all three categories, for the opportunity to compete in the October world champs.

such as this is horrendous and so the group are undertaking to raise funds to ensure they can get to Holland and represent New Zealand.

“This experience is not only the fulfillment of a dream,” said Manaia’s mother Yerane Davies, Davies “it’s also about developing their confidence, and teaching them about team work, determination and friendship. Rebel Youth is a relatively new crew,” she explained, “and they have developed a high level of performance skill, in a short time. It is exciting to think where the future might lead them and the potential they have,” Yerane added. “The Rebel Youth dancers are not only role models among their peers in the dance community, but also in the wider community. To be able to participate and gain international success would be an awesome achievement for this bunch of Kiwi kids!”

To qualify for the world championships at the National Hip Hop Unite competition Manaia and the rest of Rebel Youth from Dancebeat came in at first in the Cadet category.

Manaia was also part of a duo with her partner from Nelson and this also came in at first place, while she and the crew Aperture from Zion from Christchurch took out second place in the junior section.

Now her challenge is to split her time between now and October with the three crews, as training steps up dramatically for the World Champs. She has to take flights to Auckland and Nelson regularly to train.

“She is also fundraising and if anyone would like to sponsor or help her directly, especially with her domestic flights for training, I would be grateful if they could contact me,” Yerane concluded.

Hororata shooter Brogan Baldwin is the first Malvern Shooter to win Ellesmere’s Stevenson trophy. After finishing tied on 300 points at the Ellesmere open in the handicap competition, a three way shoot off was required. This was held the following week when Malvern travelled to Dunsandel for the annual representative match versus Ellesmere. The three Shooters shot shoulder to shoulder with Brogan emerging victorious on a handicapped score of 100.

Brogan’s silverware was the highlight for Malvern on the night, with Ellesmere scoring a resounding win.

The King of the Bowl Series (KOB) is a five round series held by the Canterbury Mini MX Club for four to twelve year old competitors, and had over 150 riders competing.

This year, due to weather conditions, only four rounds were held at the Club track in Darfield. With eight categories over all age groups, the top points accrued from the best three of the four rounds contributed to the final score.

The committee work hard to provide a good track for the youngsters to have fun and also be competitive in their sport.

Families travel from all over the South Island to race in the KOB. Prize giving was held after the last round on Sunday, July 9th at the Darfield Rugby Club.

Every child that entered received a trophy or a spot prize thanks to the many, and much appreciated, sponsors of the Club.

Another popular Darfield Rugby Football Club Division II fundraising quiz was held last Friday evening at the Darfield Hotel.

Organisers were extremely pleased with how successful and enjoyable the smoothly run event was and thank their supporters for making it so.

There was a great selection of prizes and because of the quantity of them, all of the 26 teams entered received something. Prizes were eagerly sought by winners and place getters and all prizes were gratefully appreciated by the event organisers.

The quiz ended in spectacular fashion, with the defending champions drawing with the eventual winners. This meant the two teams went down to the wire with a bonus question to decide their fate. At the conc l u s io n b ot h t e a ms answered the bonus question correctly, but speed was of the essence as it came down to who delivered their answer to the judge first. The All Wrights achieved this and took the title!

Fresh snow and enthusiastic children were a perfect combination at Darfield Preschool and Nursery last week.

Building a snowman, sledding down the hill and throwing snowballs were all part of the fun for the children and teachers, before warm Milo and freshly baked chocolate cake warmed them up when they came indoors to watch the snow continue to fall.

A community Quiz with a difference is coming to Darfield on August 19th. To be held in the Baptist Church, Greendale Road it’s a fundraiser using technology to submit answers.

Quiz goers pay a $10 entry and can then purchase up to two bonus rounds with choice of topics (sport, history, current events, geography, comedy, entertainment, planet earth, New Zealand, people and products) to assist their chances of victory.

Smartphones, i-pads or tablets

are required to submit answers and teams should register for the event via Google docs.

Organisers have arranged the evening to raise funds to assist a group of teachers, who live in Darfield, and who plan to travel to Bangladesh in January 2018.

These teachers are travelling to support a New Zealand couple (Ross Ross and Cindy) who have been living and working in Bangladesh for decades. Ross and Cindy have started two English medium schools and currently offer international

Cambridge exams for their senior pupils. Their commitment to improve the lives of children has been endorsed by the Bangladesh government, who would like them to set up even more schools for children in Bangladesh.

Ross and Cindy left New Zealand to work with the Baptist Missionary Society of New Zealand over 29 years ago. Their work has centred around developing ‘English Medium’ schools. Their goal has been to provide an

Cindy now leads two schools, in cities four hours apart. Training local teachers to assist pupils in passing their exams has been a challenge for the couple.

The people of Darfield Baptist Church have been financially supporting Ross and Cindy since they first left New Zealand. Last year Paul Cossey, Cossey (Pastor), and Bev Elder visited them to see how the community might further support their need for mentoring teachers. Providing assistance to develop teachers’ ability to help pupils think critically, and move beyond rote learning. Darfield’s J udi Lawrence, Lawrence a teacher at Middleton Grange School and Bev Elder, a retired Geography teacher, along with retired

Christchurch Science teacher, Wendy Robinson are committed to a visit in January 2018.

Several other teachers are still considering their support and involvement. It is hoped a team of six to eight people will be travelling.

“We are also looking into establishing on-going relationships from New Zealand with other teachers who desire to support these schools by mentoring via skype and/or providing curriculum resources,” Judi commented.

The Darfield teachers will go over for a three week trip to provide this teacher mentoring.

All proceeds from the quiz night will support the team going to Bangladesh, with MC, Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton keeping the event running as it should.
