DEADLINE FOR NEXT WEEK:

Friday 30th June 2017

Fourteen year old Nathan Carter is a natural, high achieving athlete; he is on the autism spectrum and so competes in the para athlete section for secondary school races. He also races at mainstream level at his local Darfield High School and the Papanui Toc H Run Club in the Under 18 grade. “This has not only been very beneficial for Nathan's desire to constantly want to be moving,” said his mother Bridget Carter, Carter “but running has been extremely beneficial for his social interaction and being around large crowds of people. It is great to see him cheering for fellow runners, encouraging them to keep going. I’m not quite sure he fully realises the enormity of his current success, but he is beginning to say to his parents after his races, ‘I feel proud’.” Nathan was recently placed first junior para athlete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country championship, held at Ascot Park, Christchurch on June 17th. “His father Jack and I are so proud of this amazing achievement,” Bridget said. “Nathan’s recent joining of the Toc H Club also sees him competing in 2-6 kilometre races most weekends.” Mum Bridget (a talented competitive runner herself) coaches him and while she comments it's great to enjoy a shared passion with Nathan, what's most rewarding is the enjoyment Nathan is gaining from running. “He doesn’t like missing his scheduled training runs no matter what the weather is doing,” Bridget laughed. “I would like to say a special thanks to Karen Armstrong, Sports Co-ordinator at DHS, for all her support with the running events Nathan has participated in for, or at, the School,” Bridget ended.
