What a whirlwind year it has been for brothers, Keith and Brian Taege and their business Taege Engineering, based in Sheffield.

Not only did their new invention - the Power Disc - take out the ‘Agri-Innovation Award’ at the March 2017 South Island Agricultural Field Days in Kirwee, but they have now gone on to win the Fieldays Established Prototype Award in the Mystery Creek National Fieldays Innovation Awards at the event held June 14th to 17th. Up

against 37 contestants, the eight judges said that Taege’s Power Disc was by far the outstanding winner.

“The Mystery Creek Chairman commented on the Judges remarks at the prizegiving while presenting the awards,” Keith said. “They said that this product not only contained new ideas, but also had the potential for an improvement to agriculture that was far greater than originally intended.

The Full Monty tells the story of a group of ordinary men made redundant from the local steel works who set out to achieve the impossible, making a mountain of cash in a one-off strip show in their local town.

On the way, they all face their own personal challenges in revealing more than just their bodies.

“After three years of sell-out

shows in Kirwee, don’t miss out on tickets for this one,” said Courtenay Hyde - Kirwee Players publicity, “it’s definitely going to be a ‘showstopper’,” she ended.

Four uniquely accomplished guitarists, who have recently returned from concerts in Australia and China, will bring their infectious energy to Trinity Church, Darfield this July.

As part of this year’s Arts on Tour programme the New Zealand Guitar Quartet (NZGQ) will pay tribute to a range of artistic styles, including gypsy jazz, bluegrass, Celtic, and flamenco.

The Performing Arts Committee of the Malvern Community Arts Council is able to bring the NZGQ to Darfield because of the generous support of Arts on Tour NZ, Creative Communities NZ, and the Selwyn District Council.

The Darfield concert is scheduled for Sunday, July 2nd at Trinity Church, Darfield.

The current exhibition at Selwyn Gallery entitled - ‘Paint is Pain and Drinking T’ is a collaborative show featuring the work of Years 11, 12, and 13 Art students from Darfield High School. The exhibition runs from today June 23rd, until July 6th.

The art displayed in this exhibition is work from Terms one and two when students are beginning to find their feet and explore the initial ideas set out in a self-driven proposal. As the year progresses, students will continue to pursue these concepts, working towards the end-of-year folio examination for NCEA, due in October/ November.

Each student at Years 12 and 13 level elected to work in a particular field for NCEA. On offer this year were painting, printmaking, and sculpture. After selecting their subject matter, the students explore a variety of established practices to inspire their work. Themes this year range from Auckland Island rabbits, chaos and order, architecture, and self-portraiture to a twist on the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland.

Year 11 students began the year recording still life through a mixture of wet and dry media, and then moved on to printmaking and painting to produce more personal and

Having the exhibition at this point is a rewarding break for the senior students. It allows them to view and enjoy their accomplishments thus far, and to take a step back, take a large breath, and carry on their journey into Term three and the completion of their folio in Term four.

Visual Arts at High School offer students an exciting opportunity to travel on a journey of selfexpression and personal interest, and to develop a conceptual way of thinking. In return for their passion, perseverance, and time, they are rewarded with a body of art which is a reflection of themselves and their year-long journey.

Local marriage celebrant Michelle Spence has been in the area for over five years, her husband Josh however lived for many years in Springfield and was living there when the couple met. Living in Redwood when the earthquakes struck, the pair and their two children (James James and Charlotte, now 14 and 13 respectively) made the decision to move to Selwyn.

“I heard someone on the radio talking about becoming a celebrant and I thought; I’d like to do that. I enrolled at Celebrant school (2014) and have been officiating and enjoying the position ever since.

“Josh, who is in the Sheffield Fire Brigade, works for Taege engineering in Sheffield,” Michelle added, “while I work part time hours in Christchurch.

That means I’m available to meet with couples both locally and in the city.”

For anyone getting married, but not sure where to begin, a celebrant can give guidance, information and advice about just where to start.

“Whether its a low budget or extravagant wedding, we are incredibly blessed with a back drop of mountains in some of Selwyn’s fabulous venues, or even in your own backyard,” Michelle added.

Wedding days and times have changed with the ages and Michelle has found that morning weddings are currently very popular.

“People are always modifying traditions to work better for them and music is not often the traditional bridal tune any more. It’s usually Ed Sheeran or another current hit-making artist,” she said.

“Pinterest is a source of inspiration for many backyard weddings and I'm always amazed at what people can do to make their venue look amazing.

“Couples are often curious and ask me if they should set a place for me at the reception dinner, but I generally just quietly slip away when my official duties have been completed. Unless I am a family friend it’s easy to feel like a wedding crasher when you don’t know anyone,” Michelle smiled.

“I have created many ceremonies for happy clients and recently performed the ceremony for Aimee and Gareth Bailes at The Oaks of Darfield This is such a gorgeous venue with fabulous photo o p po r tu n i t i e s, ” M i ch e l l e concluded.

Malvern now has its very own P.G.A. qualified golf professional with the arrival of Kevin Hughes to the district.

Kevin, who was a P.G.A. European Tour card holder in the early 1990’s, has a wealth of experience in the professional golf scene. He trained at Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre in the UK and qualified for ‘The Open’, the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf during the 1980’s.

He was the head professional at four golf clubs in the UK and owned and developed a 25 floodlit bay, golf range and business. This included a comprehensive Pro Shop and workshop, and hosted the prestigious European Callaway Tour Truck for three consecutive years before moving to New Zealand.

But despite all of these credentials, Kevin is someone who hasn’t forgotten the ‘grass roots’ of the game. His passion and desire is to encourage everyone to get the best out of their game. “My aim is to equip my clients with the skills to enhance their confidence, improve their game and most importantly to enjoy the game regardless of age or level of ability,” Kevin said.

“I trained the old-fashioned way and believe in simplicity. The golf swing only takes one and a half seconds from start to finish.

You can't think of too much in that time frame!”

Kevin has an open and honest approach and is recognised as a coach with a flair for immediately identifying areas requiring development.

Since arriving in New Zealand, Kevin has affiliated to six local golf clubs providing coaching, golf repairs and personalised club fitting sessions.

He provides specialised tuition for juniors, beginners,

intermediate and advanced golfers. Kevin is also developing initiatives with various clubs to foster further opportunities for juniors.

The annual ‘University of Canterbury Education Mud Run’ was held at the Motukarara Racecourse on Sunday, June 18th.

This year’s Mud Run saw 940 students and fifty teachers representing 34 Canterbury schools in the five kilometre obstacle course of mud and water, interspersed with lots of fun!

The Mud Run began after the 2011 earthquakes disrupted sports. Countless young people were affected by the sudden and dramatic change to their sporting landscape - with facilities lost and Clubs presented with the ultimate challenge to continue.

“It’s an event that students and teachers alike look forward to every year,” said Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon.

Falloon “In particular we see a tremendous response from young women - who embrace the chance to set a winter-time goal, get a team together and enjoy a sense of achievement.

“There’s a huge social element and sense of fun - which is exactly what we hope young

people will associate with physical activity and sport.”

West Melton School once again have taken top spot in the Mixed Team race after also winning in 2016. The team ‘D*O*T*S’, Daisy, Otis, Ted and Stacey, ran the whole muddy course, coming fifth overall.

From the beginning, Darfield High School has shown its support for the event 100%.

“Darfield is one of our greatest supporters,” said Sport Canterbury Event Coordinator Isaac Sutherland.

Sutherland “Principal James Morris is known for being a keen participant himself!”

Darfield High School Sports’ Coordinator Karen Armstrong commented there are many reasons the event has inspired their students year after year

including that the Year 11 Physical Education class has been encouraged to compete as part of their course.

“Plus this year,” said Karen, “the Year 7 and 8 students also got involved.”

She attributes the ongoing success to the event’s appeal to such a wide group of students.

This year, Darfield’s participation numbers topped 200, with a mix of Kiwi, Japanese, French and German students - plus, once again, the principal himself!

DHS pupils also excelled themselves in the dress-up department with Abby Thornley, Alex McGregor, Lizzie Laws and Jemma Dalley gaining second place in the best dressed team competition.

Canterbury Schools’ Gymnastics competition, held on Monday, June 12th, at the Olympia Gymnasium Wigram. She was placed an outstanding second overall, gaining a first place on the Bar, third place on Floor and third place on the Beam.

When gymnastics started at Darfield in 2014/2015, Mya jumped at the chance to explore the sport some more. After a awhile she decided to pursue gymnastics on a Club level and joined the Olympia Gymnastics Club in Hornby.

Starting with recreational gymnastics it wasn’t long before she moved on to Olympia’s Regional Competition Squad.

Beginning at bronze level it was only eight weeks and two competitions later that Mya won her first placing, a third on the Bar. From there she has made her way through the bronze level gaining ribbons as well as a bronze and gold medal. She then moved up to the Silver level and again gained herself more ribbons and two bronze, one silver and one gold medal, Mya was also awarded the training cup at the end of year prize giving last year for her determination and persistence with her training.

Proud mum, Kylie McDonnell commented.

“No matter how challenging a skill can be to learn Mya never gives up and always tries her best. This year aged ten, and after only one and a half years competitive gymnastics, she is Glentunnel student Mya McDonnell and her passion for gymnastics now in the Gold level and has has won her many medals. already won herself two gold medals. Mya's passion for gymnastics is beyond words and her coaches, family and friends are so very proud of her ‘It’s No Mistake – Do Not Hesitate!’ achievements.”

Darfield High School have had the amazing opportunity of sending a team of year 10 pupils - aged 14-15 years of age - on the ‘Spirit of Adventure’, which began on June 2nd.

The Spirit of Adventure is a five day voyage out of Auckland, where four schools compete in order to win the title of champion school. It is a great oppor tun ity t o i mpr ove leadership skills, teamwork, and overall outgoingness. The team from Darfield (from a range of backgrounds and many didn’t know each other before) who participated were, Emily White, Hayley Murray, Jenny Walter, Caileigh Peaufa, Brie Edwards, Ben Sharp, Ben Francis, Caleb Curtin, Matt Cooper, Sam Cunningham and Louise Blakemore (teacher).

The News asked the students some questions on their adventure and Hayley Murray responded: How were applicants selected?

Surveys to assess interest and numbers, before teachers, using a range of criteria, selected suitable people to participate.

How did you fund the event?

As a group almost $12,000 needed to be covered.

Fundraising, included selling cheese rolls, a raffle, and sausage sizzles, as well as sponsorship and grants, including those from: the

Malvern Lions, Selwyn Council, Malvern Community Board, Eurogari and Farmlands.

Some details of the journey?

Initially the boat was to sail to Tauranga in time for the Mt Maunganui marathon, as funds were being raised there for participation in future voyages.

However the weather didn’t play the game and so this wasn’t to be.

Day one - the boat sailed to Great Barrier Island, anchored for the night then carried on to Mercury Island. This was probably the roughest day, with lots of people seasick. Anchored at Mercury island for the night the plan was still to get to Tauranga - but when this was abandoned the boat retraced its course anchoring on day three at Waiheke Island.

The following day the Spirit of Adventure sailed to Motuihe Island where we helped plant over 100 Kaka Beak trees, then on the last night we anchored in Station Bay on Motutapu Island.

The cabins on the boat have hammock beds, three high.

Each morning we clean the ship and each school, (there are four schools on a voyage at once) is assigned a different area. If you were on galley specials this was an all day duty where you do all the meal dishes.

What did you learn /experience?

learnt so much from the games and activities. Leadership skills were developed by everyone having a turn as leader and we learnt how to work as a team, using our individual strengths, to get things done quickly and smartly.

We also learnt a lot about sailing and communication skills - stepping into a situation where there are 30+ other people that you need to get to know in under five days.

It is such an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity, that has so many benefits and rewards. I know that a lot of us are now thinking about when we will be able to get back for a ten day voyage - you need to be sixteen for this Thanks A huge thanks to our teacher Louise Blakemore for organising and planning the trip, we couldn’t have done it without her and it was awesome to have her come on it with us.

Also a big thanks to friends and family for supporting our fundraising efforts, and thanks to parents for running us around to meetings etc.

Hororata is known to celebrate all things Scottish come November, but this year the Scottish party is starting early with a ‘Ceilidh’ planned for Friday July 7th. Ceilidh is a Gaelic word for 'gathering' or 'party’. However, these days when people think of a Ceilidh, they think of a fun filled night of wild dancing, good music and great company!

“Ceilidhs have a reputation of being great fun and this one will be no exception,” commented organising committee member Karen Meares.

“As with any event we have in Hororata we have found a few ways to put a twist on the evening which will make it an event to be remembered. One tradition we are sticking to is having a ‘Ceilidh Caller’,” she added. “This is someone who works with the band to get everyone up and dancing. The beauty of having a quality Caller is that if you have never attended a Ceilidh before you will be able to join in and learn the steps.

“Colin Forsyth is an internationally renowned Ceilidh Caller and luckily for us he used to reside in Hororata before returning to his native home Scotland in 2014. We managed to convince Colin to come back to Hororata especially to call

this Ceilidh for us. He will be fronting the ‘Incredible Ceilidh Band’ who know all the best tunes to get everyone on the dance floor,” Karen said.

Everything about the evening will immerse people in the Scottish Ceilidh culture. A Scottish themed supper menu is planned and of course there will be Hororata Whisky on offer. A ‘Toast to the Haggis’ is planned; this is a spectacle in itself including a piper, a Robert Burns poem in the tradition tongue and theatrical cutting of the haggis with the ceremonial knife.

A small and excited group of Darfield Preschool and Nursery tamariki had the pleasure of visiting Darfield Primary School for a morning of ‘Discovery time recently.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning of new experiences and meeting with old friends who have moved on to school, as well as a chance to get physical on the school playground. This visit offered the children opportunities for them to find out what the school environment looks and feels like, to engage in new experiences and to challenge themselves socially, physically and emotionally.

A fun and engaging morning was had by all!!

This month marks the fourth anniversary of the opening of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, in Rolleston, which will be celebrated with a Birthday Bonanza event.

More than 1.1 million admissions to the Centre have been recorded since its opening in June 2013.

“Fitting discs to our drills ruined the two main features that made the Taege product stand out from our competitors, so we abandoned them,” Keith explained. “The weight of our drills was too light to force the discs into the ground. Our flexible vibrating tines created tilth that grows seed by breaking up the soil as they pass through. A disc cuts a trench and there is no hard soil to work the tine. Still, customers continued to ask for disc openers so we, my brother Brian and I, began to think outside the square to design an apparatus that would allow us to best use the existing weight of the drill and not reduce the tilth that is so important for crop success and Taege drills. (The Taege direct drill is currently the biggest selling seed drill in New Zealand.) This was achieved by

mounting the discs in the middle of the drawbar producing a fulcrum point in multiplying the leverage and effectiveness of the weight of the drill. By having the option of powering the discs they turn slightly faster than tractor speed creating a tilth, not just a slot, so the advantage of Taege’s vibrating tine is not lost. By powering the disc there is also an added advantage that trash or residue is cut completely, assisting in reducing build-up amongst the tines and aiding decomposition.”

On Tuesday, June 13th, West Melton Primary School’s year four to eight students had a visit from Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton. Sam talked to the students about the great things that are in Selwyn, and what his role as the Mayor is all about.

While interacting with the learners, the children asked questions about Sam’s job, if he lived in a 'white house' and his thoughts on a skate park at West Melton.

Sam also had a few spot prizes to give out, if the students could

answer some questions correctly.

The learners had a great time getting to know their Mayor.

On Wednesday, June 14th, two teams of year five and six students competed for the first time in the Lincoln Zone Rippa Rugby Tournament, held at Halswell Domain. This is the first time that West Melton has entered this tournament, and apart from feeling the very cold weather, played exceptionally well. The West Melton Gold team won all their games and were declared winners on the day. All their hard practices at lunchtime with their coach, teacher Aaron Taylor, paid off in the end. They will now compete with other zone winners at the Canterbury champs in July.
