A large and supportive crowd attended last Saturday’s Kirwee fundraiser for cancer support in recognition of local Hamish Reid.

Reid Thanks to the assistance of Steve Evans, Publican of the Kirwee Tavern, local residents and local businesses, the event was a huge success.

“Hamish was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma four years ago,” explained Andrea Reid, Reid Hamish’s wife. “He has undergone 45 chemotherapy treatments (some self funded in Australia), a stem cell transplant, twenty radiation treatments and most recently a

bone marrow transplant.

“During this time the family has received support from family and friends, as well as Malvern Cancer Support, The Bone

Marrow unit and the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society, for which we are extremely grateful.”

More than fifty local residents gave their resounding support for the establishment of a MenzShed at two public meetings held in Darfield last week.

The meetings were opened by Bev Elder on behalf of Malvern Community Hub. Bev spoke about the philosophy behind the MenzShed concept, the desire of the Hub to help make real a long held dream in the community to establish a MenzShed in Darfield, and the opportunities that a successful Menz Shed would bring to a wide range of people. Selwyn District Council CEO, David Ward and Councillor Jeff Bland facilitated the meetings to help get an action outcome.

All attendees at the meetings

were asked what they would like to get out of membership of a MenzShed. Their responses included: • The opportunity to learn new skills.

• Comradeship and companionship.

• Using skills that are lost after retirement.

• Sharing engineering skills.

• A place to contribute the range of skills that they had to offer.

• Fellowship / helping local community.

• Assist with people’s health needs.

• A place to develop friendships and personal support.

• Somewhere to get out and do something before it is too late.

• Learn to use machinery properly.

Share ideas and skills.

Looking for something different to do after retirement.

• Community project opportunities.

The overall conclusion from both meetings showed that there is strong support to proceed to the next step for establishment of a MenzShed in Darfield. Looking to move with purpose both meetings agreed to hold a further meeting on Tuesday, June 20th at the Darfield Recreation Centre.

That meeting will focus on the establishment of a committee, discuss possible locations, access to tools and equipment and identification of community projects.

James Reid aged nine Hamish and Andrea's youngest son, took up the fundraising challenge along with thirteen others to gain sponsorship and shave their heads for a cure.

James and three of his mates also got Kirwee school on board with a wacky hair day held before their head shave.

“Saturday was a fantastic night,” Andrea said, “with an auction, raffle and head shave.

DJ Singh Star provided the sound system, while Glenn Peddie from PGG Wrightson kept the auction bids going with his clever auctioneering/ banter.

“Although Hamish was too unwell to attend the event he was able to Facetime and see all the action.

“To date $23,000 has been raised for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society, with the final figure to be revealed when head shave money is all received,” Andrea added.

The Reid family would like to thank the Malvern community for their ongoing support which is very much appreciated.

Darfield water was the winner at a recent blind taste test undertaken at the New Zealand Water Industry Operators Group conference in Queenstown, where judges decided the township has the tastiest water in New Zealand.

It comes after a major upgrade to the Darfield water supply in 2014 with the installation of two deep ground bores, a 1,000m3 concrete reservoir and a booster pumping station. The bores source the artesian water from deep underground, meaning the water is naturally filtered providing a safe supply.

The water is also subject to regular testing and Council contractors Sicon are responsible for the maintenance of the Council's water supplies. They also entered the water sample at the conference.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton, Broughton who lives in Darfield commented, “It's great that the outcome of all the work to improve the Darfield water supply quantity and quality has been nationally recognised. The Council has worked closely with Sicon staff to improve the water source and infrastructure network.

“The two bores provide an increase in reliability over the summer and if work needed to be done on either of the bores the supply will still be continuous.”

“Following the Havelock North water issues, the Government is investigating what future treatment steps Councils need to take, but local community feedback that I have received is unanimous in wanting to keep our deep aquifer sourced drinking supplies, chlorine free.

“I encourage everyone in Selwyn to join www.selwyn.getsready.net which is the system we use to immediately alert residents of water issues and emergency situations - via text messages and email,” Sam added.

The judging panel made up of representatives from the Water Industry Operations Group, chemical company, IXOM and Altitude Brewing decided Darfield had the best-tasting water based on how it looks, smells and tastes.

On Monday, June 12th sixty people from the Hororata community meet with Octa Associates to share their ideas and dreams for the future of Hororata.

"We had a fantastic turn out to each meeting on the day and on the whole, really positive ideas and feedback. It is exciting to be working with a community who is so motivated to come together and take charge of their own future," commented Emily Craigie, Craigie Project Manager, Octa Associations. Octa have been contracted by the Go Hororata group to conduct a feasibility study looking at the facilities needed in Hororata going into the future.

"There was a lot of discussion surrounding the concept of a new Community Centre, but also some other new and exciting ideas for development and expanded use of the Hororata Reserve," Emily added.

"We will now prepare a Preliminary Findings Memo

document collating all of the information we heard at Monday's meetings. This will not define a final project concept, but will outline the feedback from the community.

By summarising all we have heard as an independent third party we want the whole community to be aware of the ideas, and needs, of different groups. We hope to identify cross-over between groups and eliminate any duplication of facilities. Working with Go Hororata we will circulate this Preliminary Finding Memo document to the community. We recognise the importance of providing as many people as possible with the opportunity to be involved in this discussion," Emily concluded.

Springfield residents are enjoying the recently installed footpath along Tramway Road, between Pococks Road and the School.

Springfield School BOT and the Springfield Township Committee put in a request for this footpath to the Council at their Annual Plan consultation in 2015. At that time, the budget for footpaths in the Selwyn District was a lot less than it is today and it was looking like some many years would need to be waited before a pathway would get installed.

However, in the ensuing year, there was work done behind the scenes by the then Deputy Mayor, Sarah Walters who assisted with facilitating an increase in the footpath budget for Selwyn.

“As a result, we were one of the townships that benefitted,” said Catherine Barnett of the Springfield Township Committee.

“It was a highly anticipated piece of work, and it is now great to see children using the footpath for play and for getting to school. Adults are using it as well and it is providing a lot of enjoyment.

“This footpath is the backbone of our walkway/cycleway network in the township which we plan to extend in the coming years. It also helps to keep our younger members of the community safer by encouraging them to play off the road and it has the added benefit of helping Springfield to look a lot smarter,” Catherine added.

Local ward councillor, John Morten commented, “I am delighted that Council has increased the funding for pathways which meant that this footpath has now been able to

Darfield’s Challenge Service Station is now being cleaned without the use of chemical cleaners and it’s all down to the very forward thinking management team.

While attending an ENJO cleaning Demonstration with ENJOpreneur Megan Watene, Watene Challenge owners Geoffrey and Annabelle Hampton, Hampton and Manager Sandra Frazer were impressed with the cleaning ability of the fibre based cleaning system.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre has been named in the top five most accessible aquatic centres in New Zealand.

A national survey was undertaken by Oyster NZ, a booking site and travel guide for domestic and international travellers with extra mobility needs. They contacted all the pool centres in New Zealand, and also asked disabled communities to make recommendations on their local aquatic centres based on the accessibility of facilities and equipment available, and whether they provided for all levels of disability.

“The Selwyn Centre aims to cater for all needs, with the hydrotherapy pool, 25 metre and leisure pool all wheelchairaccessible by ramp. A hoist is available for use in the spa pool, with pool staff trained on its use and readily available to assist

patrons.

“The two disabled changing facilities are equipped with a hoist and change table. Two water wheelchairs are also available for use in the pools,” said Aquatic Facilities Manager, Kathy Moore.

The 27 volunteers within the Selwyn branch are locals, wanting to help their own communities; the group is always looking for more volunteers to join them and the Selwyn group would love to hear from anyone who can assist.

Bellyful is a service that is dependant on the generosity of people and businesses in the community. The easiest way to donate is on their website.

Pippa Wetzell is the ambassador for Bellyful and comments: “As much as people warn you nothing can really prepare you for parent-hood, it’s the most wonderful and most challenging job. Those first few months with a new baby are magical and, let’s be honest, exhausting, bewildering and at times quite lonely. I was incredibly fortunate when I had my three children - I had a lot of support from family and friends who live nearby. I had meals cooked, shopping done, washing folded for me.

Despite all of that I still found it hard. I often wondered how people without that help managed.

Then I heard about Bellyful - it’s simple and yet when you’re struggling with the challenges that a newborn brings into your life, something like a cooked meal and someone to talk to can make a world of difference.

Getting off to a good start in the first few months of your baby’s life makes a huge difference to the wellbeing of a whole family.

It’s a thrill for me to be joining the team as an ambassador hopefully we can spread the good word and see Bellyful’s popping up all over the country.”

On June 9th, Bellyful Selwyn celebrated their second birthday and reported that it had been a busy, whirlwind of a year, and in the ever-growing community of Selwyn their volunteers were kept busy cooking, delivering meals and fundraising.

To date the group has 27 active volunteers, has had ten cookathons and delivered 1,058 meals to 194 families in the Selwyn region. They have cooked 272 lasagnes, 361 mac and cheese, 387 spaghetti bolognaise and 49 soups, giving them a grand total of 1069 meals cooked! Bellyful Selwyn are also very proud to say they cooked their one thousandth meal at the last cookathon on May 22nd.

Bellyful helps families around New Zealand when they need it most; at dinner-time! They are a national not-for-profit organisation providing meals for families with newborn babies, and families with young children who are struggling with illness - particularly those lacking a good support network. Their volunteers deliver free cooked meals to these families, and there’s no catch or payment involved.

Bellyful members just understand that these periods in life are hard enough as it is, without having to try and worry about getting dinner to the table and having a few meals delivered by a friendly face can be a real sanity-saver. They are not a food-bank and their service is appreciated by working parents, as much as those at home.

Bellyful’s first criteria is that the families they support don’t have others available to do what they do ie. cook and deliver free meals. The second criteria is that the family must fall into one of these categories: 1) Have a new baby (generally under three months old – but that’s not set in stone). 2) Have a young family and someone in that family unit has a serious or terminal illness. There is no financial assessment involved.

It is important to note that Bellyful isn’t a service that provides meals based on financial need, their service is based on more of an emotional need for support. .

Last week, West Melton Primary T, Maddi R and Aidriahna with one of the teams coming School celebrated Arbor Day C. The next day it was the turn fourth. Teams will now compete with the West Melton Arbor Day of the Years 5 and 6 learners, at the regional semi-finals.

Letter Hunt. The ‘letter’, organised by the School’s Eco Warriors, asked the learners in each community to work out various clues that led to the location of Warriors around the school. At each point the learners gathered information and an alphabet letter about the role of sustainability through various practices established at the School. The word that had to be eventually unjumbled from the ‘letter’ hunt was 'Sustainable'.

On Wednesday June 7th, West Melton intermediate students West Melton students on the Arbor Day letter hunt, participated in the EPro8 organised by the Eco Warriors.

Challenge, an inter-school science and technology competition. Using a generous assortment of easy to use equipment, teams race to finish the most challenges in two and half hours. The challenges included building a robot dog, a bridge that had traffic lights that turned on when a model car drove over it and a theme park ride where fans had to blow a balloon one metre off the ground. The winning team of Max S, Jed Mc, James W and Ezra S won with over 400 points, a 200 point margin from the second equal place-getters, the girls team of Ella C, Phoenix

What was the selection process for the team, did you have to trial?

The selection process took place at the Leeston Rugby Club where Under 18 males from the South Island, with Maori heritage, gathered for two days to learn about our culture and face each other in trial games. This was where coaches could assess our skills in order to select a competitive Te Waipounamu Under 18's rugby side.

What does the Rotorua camp involve?

The camp in Rotorua is for three days, where we learn Maori practices and get involved in our culture. It also includes meeting other Maori talent from around New Zealand who share the same ancestry as I do. Aside from that we play further trial games and take part in skills and drills sessions where we are assessed again. The New Zealand Maori team then gets picked after this process.

What is your future rugby goal?

My goal in rugby is to achieve the highest level of the sport for my representative region. I have played rugby for seven years and have played for Ellesmere and Canterbury Country representative sides for six years.

What is the next step following the Camp?

We play against the North Island Maori representatives where a New Zealand Maori team is chosen. After the New Zealand Maori team is picked, a fixture against the New Zealand Barbarians will be held later in the year.

NZ Young Farmers to launch documentary for rural youth on mental health at Fieldays.

This year's Mystery Creek Fieldays marked an important launch of New Zealand Young Farmers rural mental health initiatives for rural youth including the launch of a documentary that features stories of depression and suicide among members.

CEO Terry Copeland said the documentary emphasised the organisation’s commitment to lowering New Zealand's appalling suicide statistics in rural youth, and would be available for Young Farmer Clubs to show their members.

Several members had been extremely courageous in telling their story about depression candidly, and that will be reflected in the documentary.

"The documentary also deals with the after-effects of suicide and in particular shows the tragedy felt by one Young Farmers Club as they came to terms with the suicide of a member who was also a cherished Dad." Made in partnership with wellknown broadcaster Rob CopeCopeWilliams, Terry said the documentary was a deliberate attempt to be transparent around the issue.

"It's clearly been shown that past rural mental health strategies in our youth have not been successful in decreasing statistics and we have to engage more with our youth around the issues they face if we are to change those grim

numbers."

Last November the Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand called for a new suicide prevention policy, specifically tailored to address suicide risk in rural men of working age following 2013 data that showed that suicide rates in rural men, aged 15-64, were higher than suicide rates in urban men, and higher than the national male suicide rate.

The data showed it was often young male farm workers that were most at risk - and that was a trend Terry had seen in his time at the helm of NZ Young Farmers.

"We still have a very real problem around talking about how we are feeling and yet NZ Young Farmers has an excellent network of clubs that are able to offer an outlet from what can be an isolated existence on farm for our young people as well as a social forum where they can share some of their

frustrations."

As part of that support, NZ Young Farmers have recently begun GoodYarn farmer wellness workshops around New Zealand for members.

The workshops help participants recogn ise and r esp ond appropriately to friends, family, farming colleagues or customers suffering from stress or mental illness.

They also provide practical tips and tools enabling participants to discuss mental wellbeing openly and effectively with colleagues, family and friends, recognise signs of stress and other mental health problems, reduce and manage stress and find appropriate support services.

"These are small but vital steps forward," Terry said, "but one I'm confident will begin to change the stigma that remains ingrained in the younger me mb e rs of o ur ru ra l communities around mental health."

To recognise the extra effort Support Staff put into their roles in Malvern Education, Anne Cornish, Cornish the Malvern New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) President delivered beautiful pink hand written thank you cards to a variety of education facilities in the area. This initiative funded by the Malvern Branch, will help to highlight the importance and value of Support Staff in their roles within local schools.

Managing the change, controlling the controllable There’s a lot to be proud of in the New Zealand dairy industry right now, but there is also an era of change and John Luxton believes dairy farmers need to be prepared to respond.

John was the Chair of DairyNZ from 2008-2015 and He led the dairy industry through a significant growth phase.

John will be presenting a keynote speech at the South Island Dairy Event (SIDE) at Lincoln University on Monday, June 26th. The theme of this year’s SIDE is “Controlling the controllable” and he plans to talk through some of the opportunities for dairy farmers, including ten options farmers can take to control their systems. He will also outline some guiding principles for farmers.

He observes the social and economic challenges posed by the current industrial revolution the world is going through are very significant.

Well the 2017 season is well underway and in fact we are just on half way through already! This year started off with a lot of extra work for the whole Club (DRFC) with the Farmlands’ Cup pre-season game between the Crusaders and the Highlanders. This event was carefully planned by the Darfield Club and the Crusaders. It went off without a hitch! This really was a huge effort and was a real credit to everyone involved.

The Club was stunned beyond belief at the start of the season, with the sudden passing of a great Club man and friend to many of us – Honorary Life Member and Club Captain Craig Miller tragically passed away one day while working at the Club. He will forever be missed, but never forgoTen. Our thoughts and prayers are always with his much loved family Kathleen, Ben, Ryan and Kate who we all hold the upmost respect for.

This year sees DRFC field eleven teams in in the red and blue, as well as a big number of players in the Malvern Under 11s and 13s. All teams have started really well and this is largely due to the amazing Coaches and Managers we have for all the teams. 2017 has also seen us field an all-girls team in the Under 7s and they are doing really well in the boys comp! Well done girls keep it up!

Our Div 1 team made it into the semi-finals of the Luise, Cup Combined Compe++on, this in itself was a huge accomplishment as there were nineteen teams in this compe++on and our team was down to the last four! Great work. Sadly the result wasn’t one they had hoped for, but a great achievement to have got this far nevertheless. Now they move into the Ellesmere Compe++on and will be compe+ng for the Coleman Shield.

The Club is now back up to the strength it was around 2004/05 when our Div1 team won the compe++on and that is shown by the number of spectators, and the way the Clubrooms are packed every Saturday night!

As always, the Club is moving forward in many areas; due mainly to the awesome CommiTee and the support we get from all its members and the local community. I would like to thank you all for this support we receive in a variety of ways. Lastly all the best to our teams this year and I hope to see you all there at the end, in August.

The Darfield Div 1 team have been having a great year under the new coaching team of Mervyn Todd and Alex Robertson. The team managed to go unbeaten un+l a couple of week’s ago when they lost the semi-final of the Luise, Seeds Combined Division 1 Cup to Rakaia followed by a lost to Lincoln when playing off for 3rd and 4th. They now move on to the Ellesmere Division 1 compe++on with the Coleman Shield as the top prize, which Darfield has never won.

“This is huge mo+va+on for the team and any support is greatly appreciated. There is a great atmosphere at the club, so come on down and let's make history”, said manager Alannah Bell.

DARFIELD DIV TWO Improving each week, the Division 2 side is on track to finish in the top half of the compe++on and push for a semi-final posi+on. It has been great to have an injec+on of youth this season with Rick, Gus and Tom really stepping up.

New appren+ce manager hydra+on specialist Joe Stewart has also started the season strong and forms the management team with Bodie Hawkins and coaches Andy Payton and Kris Rodgers.

A[er having preTy much the same coaches, management and players for the past three years, this year sees a fresh look to the Darfield Colts.

With many players gradua+ng to now play senior rugby for the Club the team began the year with nine returning players; but with a few players coming up from U18s and a bit of recrui+ng, a very solid squad of 25 players was formed. In came long serving Darfield players Iain Munro and Mike Pauling - to take on the coaching role.

The management team sees experienced campaigner Dave BeaPy return for a fourth year with the team and he is assisted by Devon Wendover. Fourth year colt Hamish Inch is the team captain for the year and is supported by co-vice captains Luke Holmes and Nick Gardener.

Early results in the first half of the season haven't quite gone the team’s way, but with a goal of improving individually, and as a team, week by week it should see this team have a strong finish to the year.

DARFIELD UNDER 18 The Darfield Under 18 team have got off to a good start to the season winning more games than they’ve lost. During the first round the team have started to find their feet and form some combina+ons. Made up of players from the wider Malvern area and Dunsandel, plus having a large squad that largely haven’t played together before, has its challenges. With each game, there has been steady improvement as the players beTer understand the game plan, and their role in the team. Having a fit squad of 22 each Saturday will certainly be an advantage heading into the business end of the season. This group is a great bunch of boys with most of them in their first year playing U18 rugby. The Darfield Ducks theme song can be heard in the changing shed most Saturdays a[er the game. The team is coached by Joe Wineera and Tim Wright and managed by Gary Michael.

Malvern Under 11½ is a strong team of keen boys made up of players from Darfield, Kirwee, Selwyn, Springfield and surrounding areas. For a lot of the players this is their first year in a compe++on grade.

The team has around twenty players in the squad and a lot of them have experienced playing different posi+ons. It has a strong forward pack and some fast runners in the back line with great tacklers all round.

They approach each game with enthusiasm, a hunger to win and the will to learn.

The boys love a good challenge and give 100% every week.

DARFIELD U10 The Darfield Under 10 team has had a great start to the season with the majority of their games won. The team of twelve players are not the biggest in size, but make up for it with passion and sheer determina+on. With every win comes an increased confidence, not only in their own ability, but also in playing as a team. This year the team is coached and managed by Tim, Troy and Jackie. The Darfield under 10's would like to thank the parents and supporters of the team for their posi+ve words week in, week out.

DARFIELD U7 BLUE

Changes to this season’s age brackets resulted in the Under 9’s being a small, but close team. Most of the boys have played and trained alongside each other over the last three years, with the remaining two fi,ng in just like they’ve always been there. Team work has been a big focus for the training evenings, demonstra+ng that it’s not all about having sole possession of the ball at all +mes!

Coach, Brendan Clucas, has been consistent with his training in using the correct skills for tackling, pushing over and scrums. Whilst the team are learning some great techniques for on the field, they are also learning about respect, compassion and comradeship; it is great to see them suppor+ng each other in +mes of success, disappointment or injury. Thank you to all the family/ whanau and friends who support with training and match days, without these volunteer’s games would not be possible. (Mgr Tracy Copping)

DRFC's first all-girl team is enjoying a fantas+c season, doing the Club and their families proud, along with impressing supporters with their enthusiasm, determina+on, skills and team spirit. They have benefiTed by the coaching of former player Jacqueline Sanders, who said, "the team includes a great mix of players with some having played previously, and others just star+ng out. Skills tend to develop quickly when they can take their cue from players with previous experience. All in all, they take advice and apply it in the game and their sportsmanship is top rate!"

DARFIELD U8 The Darfield Under 8's team is enjoying their first year of tackle rugby. They have won their last three games out of five and it's great to see confidence, skill and team spirit grow among the members. A massive thanks to coach, Dean Poynter and assistant coach, Aaron Baker who not only take the +me to share their knowledge of the game, but also to provide support and encouragement.

DARFIELD U6 RED This year the Club has an amazing Under 6 Red rugby team. The team is made up of players new to the game, along with players who played last season.

When watching the game, it’s clear to see the team works well together when trying to get the rip or running for a try. The children all show great sportsmanship on the field and they should be very proud of themselves. The team are lucky to have such great young talent and they look forward to seeing the children develop their skills with the help of their suppor+ve coach.

With the new season here and a new line up to grading, it brought a few struggles toward fielding a team. But with the season now well under way the Under 7s are a great liTle team with a few reserves. The boys train on a Thursday and are gaining valuable skills that are coming through in games which is awesome to see.

DARFIELD U6 BLUE The Darfield Under 6 Blues are a highly energe+c and passionate ripper rugby team focussed primarily on inclusion and having fun playing New Zealand’s favourite game! The team has nine great liTle ripper rugby players who are all growing and developing the basic fundamentals of the game, whilst slinging a fair bit of mud in the process! The team is proudly supported by a great support structure of parents, coaches, management and of course the Darfield Rugby Club.

Although early in the season all the kids are ac+vely involved on game day (especially at morning tea) with plenty of rips, tries and numerous semi circles completed on the day!

The sun shone for those students participating in the Malvern Cross Country on Friday, June 9th. The children, from year one to six, were chosen from their respective schools to run in the Malvern Cross Country with those in years five and six placing in the top six, now going on to represent Malvern in the Canterbury Cross Country on Wednesday, June 21st. This year’s Malvern event was held on the Ferguson Family’s, Baldoon Farm at Russells Flat and organised by Principal Nick Pratt from Sheffield School.
