Malvern Squash Club are understandably excited about the forthcoming visit of New Zealand’s top male squash player. Paul Coll is this player and has been on a fantastic run of form. Along the way he won the St George's Hill Classic in England in December and this, along with a number of other great results, has seen him rise to world number thirteen.

Paul was born in Greymouth before attending Christchurch Boys’ High School, and in recent years has based himself in the Netherlands. This new base allows him to travel across Europe and America playing in the world’s best tournaments.

Paul turned professional in 2010 and has seen his rating rise ever since. This time last year he was ranked 37, but with hard work and dedication combined with his outstanding ability this ranking has substantially improved. Paul is regularly competing against the top five players in the world.

Paul is the first New Zealander, since Ross Norman in 1995, to claim a place inside the world’s

top twenty. His first tour triumph came at the Australia Day Challenge in 2013 and, after claiming a further title that same year, he retained the Australia Day Challenge in 2014 and again the following year. As already mentioned Paul’s success at the St George’s Hill Classic in December was a real triumph and he has backed this up by reaching the semi finals of the prestigious Canary Wharf classic, in London, this March.

The Kirwee Combined Rugby and Netball Club’s Black Tie Event took place on Saturday, May 27th at the Kirwee Community Hall.

The combined and varying skills of the organising committee (Kent Kent Opie, Gareth Cox, Rebecca Turner, Amy Jones, Amy Truscott, Bindy Grant, Vanessa Moore and Jan Thomas) were well utilised to make the event an outstanding

success.

Over 220 tickets were sold and Christchurch based band Puree kept the crowd on their feet.

“They were fantastic,” reported a committee member.

During the evening an auction of donated items was held as a fundraiser with one of the more popular items being that of ‘Boner’s Fishing Trip’ - (a fishing trip for three people with ex-Springfield local/publican)

Kirwee Fire Brigade once again displayed their community spirit and helped out with bar duties, as well as driving the courtesy van, which was used by numerous responsible drivers.

“It was pleasing to see so many vehicles parked up when the committee arrived first thing on Sunday morning to clean-up - a sure sign drivers had found an alternative and safe way home.”

Kirwee Netball volunteers helped to either supply goods for the supper, or helped serve on the night. They gave a huge vote of thanks to Val Watson who was instrumental in making sure the supper was up to an acceptable standard.

“It is time for Malvern to have a MenzShed”, is a comment heard frequently at the Malvern Community Hub. There is nothing more infectious than the enthusiasm of the men who share the benefits of being together in a community space using their skills, having a laugh and working on practical tasks individually, or as a group.

The Shed is a place for those who may be lonely, those who enjoy keeping their hands busy, who need a purpose and a way to contribute, and who have the knowledge, skills, or resources to share.

It’s also a good place to combat the depression slippery slope

because ‘blokes share when they work shoulder to shoulder’.

In New Zealand all Sheds are independently established and operated. In other words they are designed by a community to be used for community responses.

Projects a Shed may tackle include some community projects (the Pre-school has a shed full of repairable toys just waiting…), pest traps, picnic tables and planter boxes or men can work on their own projects too.

Some Sheds also provide classes for home school children, for alternative education especially for those

Local West Melton woman Glen Dewe was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in June 2011.

“I had a choice of two package deals,” Glen recalls.

“An MRI, more surgery and Chemotherapy; or a mastectomy and if ‘IT’ hadn’t gone into the lymph nodes, no chemo. ‘Ambervale’ Offering Op ons Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade held its annual awards night on Saturday, May 27th at the Sheffield Hall. Steve Butler, Assistance Area Commander presented the Fire Service Awards. Alan Kittelty, President of the United Fire Brigades Association (UFBA) and Tyrone Burrowes, President of the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association (CPFBA) presented the other awards.

“The hall was at full capacity with people coming to enjoy a

good night out with music from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s, reported Sheffield’s Chief Fire Officer Nev Croy.

Croy “The night began slowly with everyone catching up with friends, but after the official part and the supper, things came to life,” he smiled. “It was great to see so many people up dancing and not just sticking in their seats!”

(Reg was for many, many years the publican of the local Sheffield Hotel.) The Brigade presented Reg with an impressive dress jacket, as a way of thanking him for the service he has given.”

After the jacket presentation Reg’s family perfomed an outstanding Haka which was further acknowledgement of his service and achievement.

On Sunday, May 28th, Karen Jones from ‘Lasting Memories Created with Passion’, hosted her Pink Ribbon event in the West Melton Hall to raise money for Breast Cancer Foundation, New Zealand.

“We had an awesome day, raising just short of $1,000. The day involved those attending making cards and scrapbooks, which was enjoyed by all. We ate beautiful cupcakes donated by Bake My Day and everyone went home with a floral posy from Miss Lily Flowers. Local businesses kindly donated items to be raffled on the day, and these were quickly snapped up,” commented Karen.

“I will be having a follow up card class in June where $5 from each person attending will be donated to Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand. I thank everyone for their support on the day especially my family and friends,” added Karen.

This +me of year spiders are fairly inac+ve, except for whitetails who tend to live in our houses with us, and our winter hea+ng is very convenient for them.

Bringing in logs for the fire is an obvious way of increasing their numbers inside. They like heat and because our wood sheds are usually in a warm dry place in our garden, we tend to transport them inside ourselves. The other pest that winter brings on, are cluster-flies. Once the male has se@led down in his roos+ng place for the winter he lets off his pheromone and thousands can turn up. It is just about impossible to block them out, so if you find them and want them out; call for a treatment.

When five Darfield High School classes, from years ten to twelve, were set the challenge of coming up with an innovative business plan, the outcomes were as wide ranging as their ages.

On Thursday afternoons over a period of four weeks, 52 diverse and entrepreneurial business plans were presented to fellow students and teachers in the

school hall in the form of Market Days. Each group was required to come up with a business plan, including goals, do their research and get their business underway at these Market Days.

For Year 10’s the directive was to start small, which for many groups was the always-popular cookie sale.

Year 11’s took their single opportunity to sell at the

School’s Market Days followed by a debrief and reflection on how things went and what, if any, improvements could be implemented.

Year 12’s had the opportunity of participating in two market days giving them the opportunity to improve their performance for the second event. Their schemes needed to have a community focus of some sort (social, mental or physical) with the result that some of these groups donated a portion of profit to charity.

While year 13 students didn’t participate in the School Market Days they presented their business plans to the community. Each group had individual goals to set in their Business Planning at the beginning of the exercise eg to support a charity, to gain a better knowledge of how to run a business etc.

Dependent on their final goal some groups in this section were also able to donate a portion of their profits to charity.

There was a wide variety of goods and services on offer from the participating groups including: A variety of cookies; Mother’s Day Gifts - Soaps, lip balm; Stress Balls; Wireless cell phone chargers; Wallets; Beanies; Food Dispenser - (this was the most popular with students) and the services of a Photo-booth.

Without a doubt students have gained skills and knowledge from these market days and can take this onboard to improve results in future days, as well as tips and information toward the better running of a business.

On April 25th, 2015 one hundred riders gathered in Hawarden to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. The first 52 riders in the group were dressed in military uniforms and carried a cross, representing the servicemen from the Waikari, Hawarden, Masons' Flat and Peaks area who lost their lives over the course of three wars.

The balance of the riders were attired in either military uniform or period dress with many riding to remember a serviceman from their home area. The whole 100 Years 100 Horses event was filmed for a documentary.

It was a rousing, touching spectacle, so much so, that one of the organisers and riders is keen to recreate the event.

Lynda Barrington’s husband Garry Stevenson spoke to the News about his wife’s desire to attract riders for a similar Anzac Day presentation in 2018. He said she planned to ride

Cash for Communities is a partnership between PGG Wrightson and Ballance AgriNutrients, which raises funds for rural schools and community organisations throughout New Zealand.

Over the past six years, the programme raised more than $455,000 for rural communities from Bluff to Kataia.

In 2016, the programme ran from September 1st to November 30th with $1

donated for every tonne of qualifying Ballance fertiliser purchased by over 630 participating PGG Wrightson, farming customers.

The 2016/2017 Swimming Canterbury West Coast Carnivals were a huge success and attracted a record number of swimmers competing in each of the events. The carnivals were held on December 18th at Jellie Park, Christchurch; March 12th at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and April 9th again at Jellie Park. These carnivals are a great way for swimmers to give competing a try without the pressures found at some of the larger club meets. The focus being on achieving a new personal best in each event entered. A highlight of the Carnivals are the ‘Have a Go’ events, which were immensely

popular this year, and allow first time competitors to give competitive swimming a try.

These events are free to enter and a swimmer may choose to swim 25m and/or 50m of a stroke of their choice.

In the competitive events there are points up for grabs which are tallied up at the end of the Carnival season. On Friday May 26th, West Melton Primary School supported the global anti bullying initiative ‘Pink Shirt Day’ with students wearing pink to school.

“Overall we collected $363 for our Pink Shirt Day, which is going towards our Friendship Seat,” said Rita Spadoni, Spadoni of West Melton Primary School. “The idea behind the Friendship Chair is that whenever children have no-one to play with at lunchtime, they can sit on this seat and someone will come over and invite them to join in with their games. It is hoped children will approach the child in the seat, make sure he or she is alright and ask them to play. It also aims to help prevent bullying before it becomes a problem.

The seat can be a key beginning to promoting friendship and kindness in youngsters and help build a sense of community.

This includes the values of friendliness, caring, respect, responsibility, valuing difference and including others,” Rita added.

Last year more than 300 schools, workplaces, community

groups and well known New Zealanders participated in the anti-bullying campaign, making it the largest since 2009 when Pink Shirt Day was first launched in New Zealand. Mental Health Foundation Chief Executive Shaun Robinson said while everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and respected, bullying is a significant problem in New Zealand.

“We know that students who are

bullied are more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety and avoid going to school.

“As New Zealanders, we all have the responsibility to stand together to ensure everyone feels safe and valued. We must work together to say no to bullying and to support each other on Pink Shirt Day and every day,” added Shaun.

To the Editors: We would like to express our sincerest thanks to the Darfield Police, and the wider community for the assistance when our three year old son went missing last Thursday.

As a parent, you NEVER want to even imagine or entertain the idea that your child has disappeared. But that day, my absolute worst nightmare just about came true.

It was seriously the worst three hours of my life.

Especially when I overheard one officer saying that if they had to search much longer, they would have to consider the possibility that our wee boy had been ‘abducted’.

My heart broke and I thought that I was going to pass out. I was literally living every parent's worst possible nightmare, and of

course, imagining the absolute worst possible outcome.

However, the little ratbag was found safe and sound, a n d wa s comple tely oblivious to the commotion around him, or the fact that he was the cause of it.

I have the utmost respect and gratitude for the amazing speed at which the Canterbury Police responded to our situation, and the fact that they went above and beyond. I think we had around twelve officers searching for Theo, in the end. We had crews here from Darfield, Rolleston and Christchurch, and crews from as far as Timaru had been notified.

I don't even know who from the community was out searching for him, but I know for a fact that there

were people that don't even know us - this is why we live here! We are so, so thankful to everyone!

We are so lucky that our situation has turned out for the best - our baby is perfectly safe, and he was all along. But it could so easily have been different.

So, thank you everyone! This is why I love our little community.

P.S. We did manage to get a photo of just a few of the Police vehicles that were left on the side of the road once the fiasco died down - a keepsake that will most likely appear at Theo's 21st!

ROAD CLOSURE This seems like just a dream for many, but two seminars in Darfield in June may instill hope that it could be possible. The Two Rivers Community Trust will host these events aimed at first home buyers of any age.

Even students would benefit by finding out what lies ahead on the long pathway to owning a home.

Housing has been a big political issue as more people become trapped into paying rent long term and home ownership rates decline in New Zealand. Poverty may not be the issue it is for some, if it weren’t for the cost of housing.

“The seminars are for information and inspiration. There is no agenda to sell any product or service, just a good collection of ideas and information to share,” said Brian Knopp of the Two Rivers Community Trust.

“There will be speakers covering topics such as mortgages, Government help, Kiwi Saver, insurance, collaboration, boosting savings, and staged goal setting.

“The second seminar will have more of a focus on stories of how people have achieved this goal and the innovative ways they have gone about it. The large house and section developments typical in Darfield are out of the price range of first home-buyers, but that is not the only way to go.

There will be officers from Selwyn District Council Planning present to answer questions.”
