the crew practiced four times a week in the evening and weekends. Fundraising to pay for costumes (made by Nicky Collier and some purchased from America), commenced with the selling of chocolates and a very welcome and much appreciated grant from Darfield Bakery.

DHS Stage Challenge team competed against nine other schools emerging with an incredible second placing in the RAW division. (RAW is an extremely accessible division of Stage Challenge that strips away the sets - only hand held sets are allowed - and focusses purely on performance. Schools choose to enter this division for its greater focus on the raw elements of performance including choreography and dance. It is also a great way to encourage student led productions.)

Darfield High School’s Stage Challenge team have a lot to be proud of having returned with a huge haul of awards from the event. The Schools’ Stage Challenge and J Rock, was held at Horncastle Arena, Thursday May 18th and Darfield High School well and truly did themselves proud.

Challenge members Jade Collier and Maddy O’Callaghan came up with the theme for their challenge ‘Could you live with it?’, based on the number of drink driving accidents in the community. The message they wanted to achieve on stage was about the repercussions, and that ‘actions have consequences’.

Led by Louise Blakemore, Blakemore (Year ten Dean Digital Technologies, DHS) the challenge crew of sixty students was chosen from an audition held in February, where around 100 students vied for places. Over the ensuing two and a half months,

On Sunday, May 21st, the Hororata Village Bar and Café (HVBC) organised and assisted with a fundraiser at the Coalgate Bowling Club. The event was to assist the Club with raising money toward a new bowling turf.

“Not only was the weather fantastic, but the support from local Hororatians and further afield, was wonderful,” reported Jarnia Kupe of HVBC. “Most who participated had never played bowls before, so it made for a fun and entertaining day. I've never laughed so much," she added.

"The excitement and applause when you got close to the jack was just great,” Jarnia said.

The Club has 35 members and would welcome anybody interested in joining them.

“The Coalgate Bowling Club ladies provided food all day and it was outstanding! Well known for their catering services - this is how the Club raise the majority of their funds to build toward their goal.

All Coalgate Bowling Club members work on a voluntary basis and the Club rooms well and truly represent their hard toil and care.

“This wonderful group should be very proud of their facilities;

achieved by their efforts,” Jarnia said. “With everyone’s assistance this was a well organised day and a big thank you to the members of the Club and our supporters,” she concluded.

This exciting and eclectic exhibition of photography, jewellery and paintings from four Springfield Art Group artists is in the Selwyn Gallery, Darfield May 26th until June 22nd and illustrates beach life, farm life, adventure and isolation. The four artists who have joined together for this exhibition are Vicky Peacock (contemporary), Denise Scott Scot (realism), Myriam Jay

(photography and jewellery) and Corey Koppe (photo realism).

Vicky studied Art and Teaching in England but her passion for painting with acrylic paint became much stronger when she immigrated to New Zealand in 2001. “My bold style lends itself well to the creation of contemporary New Zealand landscapes,” Vicky commented, “as well as studies from nature and native flora and fauna.”

Denise has lived in the Sheffield area most of her life and has an appreciation for what nature presents. Different scenes, events and the light in play at various times of the day can attract her attention and inspire

her to choose a painting style that fits the subject. A camera is always at the ready to take that fleeting image as the day, the seasons and life move quickly on.

Corey began exploring his artistic pursuits with acrylic paints ten years ago, developing his own style of photorealism to create very realistic and highly detailed works. Recently he has begun to experiment with other mediums, finding a real niche with the rich colours and smooth textures of Prismacolour pencils. Myriam is a passionate photographer from France. While on a number of trips exploring the South Island, Myriam captured her favourite ‘shots’ on the West Coast, Golden Bay and Canterbury where she now lives.

Her sense of creativity has inspired her to turn her photographs into jewellery. She designs each piece with a unique photo to match. Her work combines Kiwiana and Vintage style.

Selwyn Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition and a programme is available from the Gallery.

Whether a visit to an alpine ski area is on the agenda for winter -time, or not, it’s undeniable that those that do enjoy this pastime bring a huge amount of business into the area. Shops, eateries, service stations and pubs all benefit from the extra traffic through the district and with cold temperatures making themselves felt this past week the ski-season is being eagerly awaited by many. For Selwyn’s only local commercial ski area, Porters, it’s a time of preseason preparation, staff training and weather forecast watching. However amongst all this positivity is a feeling of almost desperation as the ski-

field company attempts to accommodate their staff in the area.

Porters’ staff from outside Malvern, and often from outside New Zealand, bring with them the opportunity of friendship and the chance to interact with visitors enjoying what this community can offer. It’s also the opportunity for homeowners to have that spare space earning and as it’s only for the wintertime - summertime guests can still be easily accommodated.

“We are getting quite desperate for staff accommodation,” said Porters’ General Manager Uli Dinsenbacher, Dinsenbacher “and happy to

consider anything between Darfield and Springfield. Lack of affordable accommodation at this stage of the pre-season has surprised us - the people looking for a place to stay are young folk who do not earn a great amount, but love to work in the mountains. We hope people will come out of the woodwork with any sleepouts, baches, holiday homes or spare guest rooms. It really would be much appreciated and enable us to get off to a great winter season,” Uli concluded.

With the second term of the year now underway, the children of Darfield Playcentre can look forward to more learning experiences such as those they experienced in Term one. This term saw numerous enriching outings, including a weekend camping trip to Waikuku Beach,

which was not only a first for many of the children, but also for some of the parents too.

Everyone enjoyed fishing, watching the birdlife at the wetlands, early sunrises and of course rolling down the sand dunes.

A brilliant morning was spent at

a local family’s farm where the children were able to get up close and personal with diggers, trucks, dune buggies, and a bulldozer. The major highlight being a plane, which they were able to witness taking off and landing.

Darfield Playcentre took part in an area wide initiative called the ‘Greatest Game of Tag’ which saw Playcentres from Kaikoura to Akaroa relay (mostly on foot!) between Centres raising awareness and fundraising for Variety charity.

Playcentre children have had enormous fun expanding their Te Reo skills by choosing a different colour each week to focus on, by way of clothing, playdough, paints (indoor and out), music and food occasionally dictated by the weather. Many of the older children are now able to confidently use the Te Reo colours outside of Playcentre.

The final outing for the term was to D ar fi e l d’s McH u gh’ s Plantation which provided a fabulous setting for a nature scavenger hunt. The children thoroughly enjoyed running and/or being wheeled through the forest, seeking out the items on their lists; they were even able to extract some Huhu grubs from a log.

“It’s been great to see our Playcentre welcome many new families from around the area, and very exciting to have a few new babies added to existing families also,” finished Alana Samson, Samson a spokesperson for Darfield Playcentre.

Darfield’s Bloom Beauty Boutique teamed up with Fat Beagle Café to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research last Friday evening. Not only was the event enjoyable, but it also raised an outstanding amount of almost $1,100 for the cause.

“It went really well, and as well as the amazing sum raised, we all had a fab evening,” reported Ashlley McIntosh of Bloom

Beauty Boutique. “The night was full of yummy food, wine, fun activities, a raffle and lots of laughs!

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along, from far and wide; w e h op e yo u e n joy e d yourselves,” Ashlley commented. “A special thanks goes to Lydia Gliddon (Fat Beagle Café) for her amazing

food, hospitality and donations, as well as to Janetta Dykes of the Darfield Gift Gallery for showcasing her gorgeous clothes, plus her generous donation.

The ‘Sky Tower Challenge’ in Auckland is run every year, with all funds raised benefitting the charity Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

“The Kirwee team, with a group of supporters including Kirwee fire fighters, spouses and others, left on Friday morning, May 12th, for the big smoke,” reported Kirwee Brigade member, Mark Jones.

Jones “An early night followed the so/ so dinner at an Auckland restaurant, then it was climb day,” Mark added.

Being toward the end of the ‘Musters’ the Kirwee team got underway about 1:30pm, after some 900 fire fighters had gone before them.

“Then they were off and in what seemed like a few short minutes later, the anxiously awaiting supporters’ cameras caught it all as the Kirwee team emerged.

They came through with some great times and luckily all fairly close together. Many cheers, high fives and congratulations later, it was time for cool down and recovery, before reflection on the climb.”

The Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade team for the 2017 Sky Tower Challenge consisted of Captain Dale Evans, Stu Begg and Richard Rowlands.

Rowlands Dale, a previous competitor, bettered his already good time by nearly a minute from last year coming in at 13 minutes, 48 seconds.

Richard, a first timer, came next on 16 minutes, 57 seconds followed by another first timer, Stu on 18 minutes, 53 seconds.

“The best thing is they have all committed to doing it again next year,” Mark said. “Added to which one of our firefighters from last year, Angela Stewart has said, “I’ve got to be in for 2018, as well”.”

“Flights back Sunday, or Monday, then back to the day job,” Mark smiled. “If being a volunteer with us might interest you, please come down on our training night (every Wednesday) or drop in and see Stu Jones our Chief Fire Officer at Kirwee Challenge Service Station,” he finished.

To the Editors: As a student at Sheffield School I take part in PEAK homework. I am a year four student and need to do ten challenges this year. I am collecting knitting wool for Nurse Maude Hospice. Families visiting loved ones knit ‘Peggy Squares’ then they are made into blankets for patients.

I would like to ask Malvern News readers if they could donate any unwanted knitting wool and needles. They can take the wool and needles to Polkadotcom in Darfield, or to Sheffield School, and I will take it all to the people at Nurse Maude Hospice.

On Sunday, May 21st the Sheffield Fire Brigade invited local residents to join them in the blessing of their new ‘one of a kind’ fire engine.

With the sun shining, the gathering began at 2pm with around fifty people joining in the

blessing. There was a Maze for the youngsters to enjoy, as well as rides on the new fire truck, while the adults present enjoyed a chat and a catch-up.

Reverend Susan Baldwin blessed the machine with those in attendance placing their hand

on the new appliance while this took place.

The new fire truck, with a new engine and pump system, is the first of its type to be made in New Zealand this year, and the Sheffield Fire Brigade feel honoured at being chosen to put it to trial.

This is only the second time Sheffield Fire Brigade have ever received a brand new engine the first being in 1974.

Sheffield Fire Brigade members thank their local community for the ongoing support.

During Term two Malvern ANZ at the Darfield Netball Courts. register with their local Club and FutureFERNS Netball is held at Children aged from five to nine attend these sessions where 3.45pm on a Friday afternoon (Year 1 - 4 at school) can they will be taught the basic skills needed for netball each week, followed by a short game.

T his year the Malvern AN Z Future FERN S h ave approximately fifty children participating in the Year 1-4 programme at Darfield each week. The children have been extremely excited about receiving their much appreciated, sponsored T-shirts thanks to Leech Drainage. They wear them every week and it’s just another good reason to get into it and enjoy the sessions.

Riders and horses at the Canterbury Endurance and Trail Riding Event 1 of the Winter Series held in the picturesque Hororata Domain.

The Winter Series is a new innovation for both the Canterbury Endurance and Trail Riding Club Inc, and Canterbury trail riding as a whole, and to say their first event was a success was a bit of an

understatement!

The event was held at the Hororata Domain on Sunday May 14th, and Club members were effusive in their praise for the venue. “It is a fabulous facility for us, making the

organising of these sorts of days all that much easier,” said a Club spokesperson. “Dave Dave Sligh and the team behind the Hororata Domain really do an incredible job and without the generosity of these small communities supporting our events, they would simply not happen.”

The event attracted 51 riders in total, 37 of those competed in the biggest class the Club has

held all-season, a testament to the track, which was marked by Canterbury’s hard working President, Sue Billigheimer and trainee official, Jenna Underwood.

Underwood Both the ten kilometre and five kilometre events were incredibly well supported. The day really did belong to the kids, of which seven completed the ten kilometre event and four the five kilometre. Many of these

youngsters were new to the sport of CTR and thoroughly enjoyed their time on track.

“Winding through the forest and heading down the water laden paper road were pretty high on the positive ride reports that came back from the young competitors.”

Competing at the NRM national three-day event championships in Taupo over the weekend of May 13th, local rider Emily Cammock almost missed out on the title of ‘Open Championship’ winner, after she was initially penalised fifty points, before the decision was overridden.

"This season has been a complete shambles for me. So this is really special," Emily smiled The West Melton mother of two posted a clear round and put p r e s s u r e o n d e f e nd i n g champion Amanda Pottinger on

the event's final day and came away with the win on her 12-year-old horse Shaw Lee. "I definitely rate this horse," commented Emily. "I have had him since he was an unbroken two-year-old and while he has been a bit of a rogue, he has always been a super jumper. We just need to consolidate our flat work, and there is plenty of room for improvement."

Out of necessity it’s a sizeable crew that Emily travels with; her mother and babysitter Viv, Viv her groom Anna Poole and her two children, Katie, Katie age three,

and six-month-old Thomas making the win even more special.

Emily has never really had to choose between the great loves of her life, her horses, children and of course her husband Matt.

Matt When pregnant with Katie she was in the saddle right up to three weeks before she was due, and got straight back on three weeks after.

Although a heavy workload, Emily reckons a combination of capable assistants, meticulous planning and a helpful husband ideally means everything remains under control.

The annual Queen’s Birthday Weekend event, the ASB Christchurch Marathon, will take place on Sunday, June 4th, with entrants from near and far (including Australia, London and New York to name but a few) competing in the full/half marathons, or the more recreational options such as 10km, walking and kids ‘mara’fun.

The twelfth Windwhistle Golf Classic, a fundraiser for Windwhistle Primary School, was played at Terrace Downs on Thursday, May 11th. A field of 108 players nervously watched the weather, as the day started with a blanket of thick fog on the course. This was replaced by rain on tee-off which thankfully cleared to become a warm sunny day. This popular annual event is the major fundraiser for the School which plans to use the money it raises towards funding a part-time, third teacher. The School plans to attract another teacher for Terms 2, 3 and 4 this year to support the diverse needs of its students, and to accommodate its increasing roll.

Golfers again enjoyed a delicious morning tea before tee -off, followed by packed lunches on course provided by a dedicated group of school parents. These volunteers were on deck extremely early on tournament day to make sure everything was well organised.

Following eighteen holes of golf there was an opportunity to unwind and relax at the Clubhouse before the prize giving.

After refreshments and the prize giving, Ben Lill of HRL took on the role of auctioneer for an entertaining, action packed, auction. A silent auction was

also popular with ‘friend against friend’ bidding, resulting in some great funds being raised for the School. The combined auctions were a fantastic success, as was the raffle with the tickets being sold by the school’s pupils looking smart in their new uniforms. These were quickly snapped up and offered some great prizes for the successful winners.

The day concluded with a delicious buffet meal for players, together with school parents and locals in attendance.
