Kirwee farmers Garet and Emma Thomas have caught the ‘rally bug’ after co-driving in the October 2016, Hanmer Rally.

Not satisfied with being in the passenger’s seat, Garet talked Emma into buying a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 2 rally car. Two days later they were entered in their first sprint, finishing in the top ten. The husband and wife pair then set their sights on the West Coast rally in March this year, and again had outstanding results - finishing in the top ten out of sixty competitors.

In April, Garet and Emma headed to the Rally of Otago, noted as one of the best rallies

However a podium finish was not to be, or indeed a finish at all, as in the fourth stage and after hitting a rock, the gearbox housing cracked, which sadly ended their rally.

Garet and Emma have set their sights on competing in all seven South Island rallies this season hoping to achieve a top fifth to tenth placing overall and Garet and Emma Thomas with their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 2 potentially aiming at Novice Rally car in the Otago Rally, April 7th-9th.

SPORTS INJURY STRAPPING CLINIC - SATURDAY MORNINGS On Sunday April 30th, a selection of juniors from the Malvern Squash Club competed in the Christchurch Football Junior D and Below Squash Tournament.

Division two placings: 1st Johnny Millar 2nd Hayden de Burger 3rd Jacob Horrey Division three: 2nd Jordan Russell The next round of this tournament will be played at the Christchurch Squash Club on May 28th. Entries will be on iSquash soon.

Malvern Squash Club President Chris van der Salm commented, “there’s a bit of talk about the Malvern Juniors and their rapid improvement…and I love it.”

Whilst the Juniors battled it out on the courts in town, a working bee was held at the local squash courts in Darfield.

With at least twenty playing members and a few smaller helpers, the walls of both courts were scrubbed back to gleaming white, ready for the first round of the Autumn Interclub, which started this week. It was reported that all the hard work was finished off by a hearty barbecue, cooked to perfection by Hamish!

Jess and Maddie’s winning entry for the ‘School Ball Upgrade’. Using a drone, Jess and Maddie organised students to help in the presentation of the video - forming the ‘e’ in the logo.

When Darfield High School pupils Jess Osborne (17) and Maddie Payne (16) came across the online application form to become interns at The Edge radio station they completed it, dispatched it and were then notified to say they’d made the cut.

After meeting up with all the other interns, the pair were set their first task - which was; to make a short video at their schools promoting The Edge and a photo incorporating the station’s Logo.

Once the votes were counted and the promo video viewed, an announcement was made that will see Darfield High School win a ‘School Ball Upgrade’ courtesy of The Edge. The winner of the competition was announced on April 13th after organisers rated the video submitted by DHS students and the likes on Facebook were calculated to make up the other 50% of the total score.

“The voting was a tight race between Darfield and Papanui High Schools, but luckily in the end, we won,” said the pair.

“Our win was a combination of the 1,300 likes we received, as well as text votes and the points for our video. We really appreciate everyone's help and support and want to thank all those who voted for us,” both

Jess and Maddie commented.

“We will make sure we keep everyone updated on any future competitions and any other news in relation to this,” they added.

Edge interns will be involved in a number of promotional events over the forthcoming months one of which is to produce an advertisement promoting their school, as well as Media Works job experience during the school holidays (including being ‘Road-Runners). Both students hope to take up broadcasting as a career after they leave school and complete their broadcasting qualifications.

“We will record and write an ad in the studio very soon that will be played later on in the year, to promote Darfield High School,” Jess and Maddie said.

“As part of this we get to see what happens behind the scenes and how everything works. The overall outcome of this experience is that we will have more of a chance of getting into the Ara Broadcasting School in Christchurch where we can further our passion for radio broadcasting and Media.”

For one of their tasks the pair used drone footage and involved numerous students to create graphics visible from above - a concept that

obviously found favour both with organisers and the general voting public. This task gave the pair a win and for the winning school it’s a School Ball Upgrade which includes The Edge Candy Stand and Photo Booth with print-out pics bound to be a hit when the DHS formal takes place in August.

“Maddie and I are currently working with the Edge Canterbury Road Runners,” Jess said. “I was out on April 15th, at Dress Smart, Hornby giving out lollies for Easter. Maddie will have the chance to do this later on in the year, so keep an eye and ear out on where to find us.”

For the intern excelling in the maximum number of their tasks it’ll be a flight to the Edge Auckland studio to sit-in at the live studio while learning about what takes place behind the scenes in a radio station.

To raise money for the St. John Heart of Gold Annual Appeal, the three year old children from Annabel’s Kindergarten held a dress up week and teddy bears’ picnic. Each child donated a gold coin to the large gold heart that was created.

On Friday, April 28th, the children ventured out for an autumn community walk with the first stop being St John’s.

“We met Jill Hill there, a local ambulance officer, and the children proudly presented her with the gold heart of donations,” said Katy Payton, Payton Centre Manager, at Annabel’s 3 Year Old Kindergarten.

“After the presentation, Jill showed the children around the Ambulance. They were amazed how big they were inside and

loved sitting up in the driver’s seat looking at all the lights and radios,” Katy added.

“We would like to thank Jill and St John for accommodating us

for the morning. This was a valuable learning experience for the children and strengthens the children’s knowledge of their community,” Katy ended.

We have a lot of people asking us where do the spiders on their house come from. Well the majority of them don't just arrive there as big spiders, they fly in as +ny li@le spiderlings. And they really do fly! If you have ever looked up into the sky on a sunny day and seen thousands of bits of web driOing in the wind, some of them long shiny strands, others sort of bundled up like a ball of fluff; well on each of those there is a baby spider. On Sunday last weekend was a perfect example - the sky was full of them.

The baby spiders hatch out in a tree in the forests north of Christchurch, then they create a small web which liOs them up into the air and they float off to find a new home wherever the wind takes them. As the wind slows down and the cooler air of the evening comes in, the spiderlings gently float down to the ground, covering houses and trees, finding their new home. Of course if your house has been spider-proofed they will die before ge,ng established on your home - and before they will obviously grow into large spiders. These small spiders are so +ny they can get inside window frames through the gaps in the vinyl beading, as well as through the window vent. So next +me there is a hot sunny day hold your hand up to block the sun and look past it carefully; you maybe able to see some of your new neighbours on the move.

The Hororata Primary School Pig & Possum event took place over the weekend of April 21st 23rd and saw a huge turnout for what has now become a looked-forward-to annual event.

Weigh-in day on April 23rd offered families numerous fun activities including the pig carrying competition and possum throwing (these are skins with stuffing - definitely not the real deal). More than one hundred adults entered in the open hunting section with 31 boars and 16 stags being weighed in.

It does pay to read the entry form properly as one hunter found to his detriment. He

arrived fifteen minutes after the final cut-off for weigh-in meaning he wasn’t in the competition - neither were the hunters who showed up with two Chamois; had they read the entry, they would have found out there was no category for them.

Funds raised from the wellorganised event go to the Hororata Primary School PTA for the benefit of pupils at the School.

'From the Mountains to the Sea' featuring works by Cathie Bell, Blanche Fryer and David Lloyd exhibits photography, ceramic and copper sculptures and is currently open to view at the Selwyn Gallery, Darfield until Thursday, May 25th.

This exhibition is described as a wonderful mix of portrayals of the surrounding world, which these three artists all capture differently. Cathie exhibits touching photographs of the Rakaia Gorge, while Blanche and David’s intriguing and intricate ceramic and copper sculptures, are inspired by the lowlands near the sea.

Blanche Fryer: “The source of inspiration for many of my sculptures and paintings in this exhibition is our environment; a topic we have all been concerned with lately. Poor and short-sighted land use and farming practices in New Zealand, and Canterbury in particular, have resulted in the deterioration of our waterways.”

David Lloyd: “There is always something interesting going on in the

Stage Two construction of the Central Plains Water scheme is about to commence in the area between the Selwyn and Waimakariri Rivers. Construction will be carried out by Downer Ltd and will service another 20,000 hectares supplying pressurised water to the farm gates.

A key difference between Stages One and Two is the Stage Two use of a 23 kilometre long large diameter (2.5 metre) GRP pipe, instead of continuing the canal, so that all infrastructure will be buried. This pipe is the largest used in irrigation in New Zealand to date. GRP Pipe is currently being manufactured in Australia and will arrive in four shipments to New Zealand with the first one having just arrived.

Around 220 construction and design staff will be working on the project with the site office being located at Darfield. The Downer team will be laying around 180 kilometres of pipe between May 2017 and May 2018 working in with over 150 farming families along the way.

This pipe will connect to the Stage One canal and provide water by a fully underground system. Total project costs for Stage Two are expected to be close to $200 million.

The Sheffield Water Scheme irrigation area covers 4,300 hectares and will supply water to around thirty farms, it will supply irrigation water, stock water and potentially township water.

The Sheffield Water Scheme is physically separate from other stages of the CPW scheme. It will use around 37 kilometres of pipeline and contain seven

pump stations supplied from a new two million cubic metre storage reservoir under construction at Sheffield.

Fulton Hogan is the main contractor for this project and it is scheduled to be completed by October this year.

Stage One covers 23,000 hectares of irrigable area and consists of a 17 kilometre headrace canal that starts at the Rakaia River intake area and stops at Leaches Road. This canal has four lateral pipes totalling 130 kilometres in length that run off it to provide water to each property via onfarm turnouts.

The canal is thirty metres wide and five metres deep and is lined with fifty hectares of HDPE liner as well as eighty hectares of geotextile underlay.

Stage One has already completed its second successful irrigation season and is showing some exciting benefits, such as existing groundwater irrigators switching off 75% of their groundwater abstraction during the 2015/16/17 season, leaving eighty million cubic metres of water in the aquifers.

Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL) was established in mid2003 and is responsible for the scheme construction and

scheme operation. The Central Plains Water Trust was settled by the Christchurch City Council and Selwyn District Council in May 2000 and holds the consents for CPWL. CPWL farmers have provided the funding for the $450 Million scheme with $88 Million of farmer equity and the balance funded by debt which will be repaid over forty years. While providing reliable water supply is the primary role of the scheme, considerable environmental, social and recreational opportunities will be available to address issues such as groundwater recharge, and community prosperity. All stages of the scheme will be completed by the September 2018 summer season.

To the Editors: I would like to raise an issue that I feel very strongly about. It is the speed of vehicles and trucks travelling into and through, the Dunsandel township along Hororata Dunsandel Road 50km area.

Along this particular stretch of road are a Plunket rooms and Preschool with many kids coming and going. We have children playing on footpaths and it scares me when I see these trucks and cars flying through the town. Night time and early morning are the worst, and someone is going to be killed on this road! I have been to the Selwyn Council and the response from the roading engineer was weak, sending me a picture of the 50km sign and saying we will go on a roster for

a ‘Speed indication’ device for six months, but it will be a long time before it happens.

I have approached the Dunsandel Community Association and they are in full support of something being done but have little in the way of money to spend. Even more disappointing is seeing a lot of what I can only guess are farmers and locals with utes and 4WD’s that obviously live out on the land, scream through the town and they should know better. My plea is for some of you to read this and next time you are approaching the residential area think of the child that might just step out from the sidewalk and get killed by you because you couldn’t slow down.
