To the Editors: This year’s Anzac Day saw another great turnout of locals converge on the Darfield war memorial. It is so pleasing to see so many people making an effort to turn out and remember those that made their sacrifice to enable our liberties and freedoms. I feel sure to say that these men and women didn't consider that this was their purpose, but it became thus, and we are grateful. It is also pleasing to see an ever growing number of young people commemorating the event. I must however say that the absence of the honour guard was duly noted. I was saddened to think that our Defence Force was, for what ever reason, unable to spare the time to help us honour our local heroes, and indeed their own forebears. However large or small, it was our local sacrifice and certainly worthy of their respect and attendance.

This year’s Poppy Day Appeal took place throughout New Zealand on Friday, April 21st. A splendid day of weather in the local Malvern area, ensured that pleasing numbers of people were out on the streets showing their support.

2017 marks the 95th annual appeal, making it New Zealand’s oldest continuous appeal.

Every cent from the Poppy Appeal goes straight to the Poppy Fund of the area’s local RSA, from which grants are made.

Funds raised in the community stay in the community, to be used by service personnel in the local area. Poppy money is not used for anything other than support services. The RSA supports both current and ex-

Initially planned as an expedient method of quitting rental stock to ensure the business had new up-to-date equipment always for hire, the massive annual Gnomes Snow Sports ski and board sale has now become something of a stand-alone event. It’s looked forward to by snow sports enthusiasts from throughout Canterbury, especially those wanting well priced, only one season old equipment. This year’s sale takes place from Friday, April 28th for three days only.

“The sale has grown each year since we purchased the business eleven years ago, it’s just crazy how big it has become,” Gnomes co-owner Ally Kerr laughed.

“It really is a great way to get kitted out for the slopes at reduced prices, either by purchasing ex-rental ski and snowboard gear at super low prices, or previous season retail stock all heavily reduced,” he added.

On May 12th, members of the Malvern community are invited to attend ‘Beating the Blues; boosting your connections with those around you’, at the Darfield Rugby Clubrooms. The Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation (RCPHO) and the Mental Health Education and Resource Centre (MHERC) will host this free evening that seeks to involve residents in the conversation around mental health and wellbeing.

The workshop aims to help people understand the importance of communicating

with others, explores the concept of ‘up’s and down’s’ while sharing ideas, strategies and practical tips around how to cope with, and manage, the stresses life can throw at folk.

The event will have several speakers, with the main presenter being MidCanterbury personality Pup Chamberlain, Chamberlain a former Police officer, D.A.R.E facilitator and current health promotor for the CDHB. Pup will discuss the importance of having a healthy mind and body through sharing some of his own experiences of 38 years in the Police and working in a rural community.

Sam Robinson, Robinson a Methven local who has gained national attention by speaking out about his own experiences with mental illness, will also address the group. Sam will share his personal journey and thoughts about how mental health is perceived by rural communities in New Zealand.

Lastly, LeeLee-Anne Tarling from

Darfield

MHERC, will be presenting a short ‘gate keeper training’ that will provide attendees with practical tools and confidence to help others and themselves.

Participants will be provided with the opportunity to: • Understand the importance of communication.

• Explore the concepts of ’Ups’ and ’Downs’.

• Ask questions and discuss issues openly without judgement.

• Share ideas and strategies on how to get off the bus sometimes.

Organisers hope that the event will attract an audience that spans a range of ages and they encourage the local community to be a part of the conversation around wellbeing. They hope folk will register and go along!

Watched by community members, Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton officially opens the new pathway between Coalgate and Glentunnel.

Last Sunday, in warm sunshine, Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton cut the ribbon and officially opened the new walking and cycling pathway, linking the towns of Coalgate and Glentunnel.

“It's great to have this new track linking these two towns,” Sam commented. “This project has been worked on for a long time within the local township committees, Malvern Community Board and the Selwyn District Council.

“Glentunnel school has been a

strong advocate for the installation of the path as it allows the safe passage of young people to and from school. A key part of the project is the bridge over the historic brick culvert as you enter Glentunnel.”

It takes about fifteen minutes to cycle the track, or thirty minutes to walk it from Coalgate Motors to the Glentunnel Store and is one of a number of walkway projects that the Council is looking to complete.

“Our current Annual Plan asks

all Selwyn residents whether or not we should continue to invest in footpaths,” Sam added. “Most of the extra work are footpaths that are missing links. The New Zealand Music Managers Forum with support from the NZ Music Commission, Recorded Music NZ and OneMusic has just announced the finalists for the 2017 Music Managers Awards and Springfield based Musician/Singer/Songwriter Mel Parsons has been named on the prestigious list.

The relationship between artists and managers is one of the strongest and most important in the music industry, and for thirteen years the MMF Music Managers Awards have been celebrating the importance of the people at the centre of this relationship who are shaping the careers of New Zealand’s biggest artists.

Out of view of the public eye, music managers work hard to strategise and build an artist’s career in the ever changing and evolving landscape of the music industry and choosing a manager is one of the most important decisions an artist will make.

The award categories include NZ Manager of the Year, Breakthrough Manager of the Year, International Achievement, Self-Managed Artist of the Year, Best Independent Tour, Best Small Venue and Best Large Venue. Another award category has also been created this year for Emerging Manager of the Year, recognising the achievements of the new managers in the industry.

The MMF Music Managers Awards will be held in Auckland on Wednesday, May 10th with the attendance of managers, industry professionals, and artists. Also awarded on this night are the Industry Champion Award as voted for by MMF members, and the MMF Mentoring Achievement Award as voted for by MMF Mentors.

The Glentunnel Museum is one of the area’s local places of interest. As well as being full of treasures from the settlement days of the Whitecliffs, South Malvern, Glentunnel and Coalgate areas, it also displays a number of items from further afield. The memorabilia relates to coal and clay mining, as well as the pottery industry.

“Last summer brought a number of bus groups to visit, and there was much positive feedback,” reported a Museum spokesperson. “The Museum’s AGM is fast approaching and we are calling on community members to show their interest in keeping this wonderful facility available to all who wish to visit it. We would encourage anyone who can, to attend the AGM; and as supper is to be served, an indication of attendance would be much appreciated.

“Even if folk don’t wish to be office holders, there are numerous tasks that would benefit the Museum and that members of the community may be able to assist with. We are looking for volunteers to be on call for when bus groups come to visit or for the regular Sunday afternoon openings during the summer and sincerely hope attendance at the AGM will bring forth some offers of help.”

Darfield has missed having a full mechanical workshop operating, but this is soon to be rectified with the opening of Darfield Automotive on May 1st (opening hours 7:30am until 5:30pm Monday to Friday).

Based in the workshop behind Allied Petroleum (the home of the old Darfield Mechanical) the new business is owned by local Selwyn couple Janelle and Paul (Macca) McIntosh.

McIntosh Paul is no stranger to mechanics, having been in the automotive industry since completing high school 22 years ago, while Janelle is no stranger to business having a background in administration/ accounting and currently owning a Christchurch fast food outlet with other family members, which she manages remotely.

Macca was born and bred in Ashburton and after finishing school took up employment in service stations, eventually managing them before completing his automotive apprenticeship in Christchurch.

“Macca is fully qualified and has WOF authorisation,” Janelle explained, “following his apprenticeship and subsequent

The family enjoy their time in Selwyn, having moved locally after their Christchurch home was red-zoned. The couple have three children (two boys at school and one pre-school daughter) and their boys are involved with Selwyn Football Club, where Macca has coached for the past three years.

Dunedin born Janelle has spent time living in both Kaikoura and Christchurch after returning from her ‘big OE’ and commented that she enjoys assisting at the children’s school when time permits.

Macca’s leisure time isn’t all nuts, bolts and engines, he likes perfecting his home brew and also sings in the Selwyn Community Choir and can often be heard practising in the workshop!

“Weekends are family time,”

the couple commented, “so we have extended our Monday to Friday opening hours and will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday.”

We will also have loan cars available and welcome customers in our waiting room - with free tea and coffee.”

Lincoln Envirotown are happy to announce that the recycling of household batteries has started in Lincoln at the New World supermarket and they would urge everyone who has been holding these and wondering what to do with them to go and deposit them in the container provided.

The scheme was initiated by Lincoln Envirotown Trust, who contacted Alan Liefting of Ecotech Services to discuss this specialist service offered by them. The Trust was soon joined enthusiastically by Kyle Burnett of New World who agreed to provide the space for them to trial the concept. Maria Wake from the Sustainable Initiative Fund Trust was also supportive and the Trust agreed to fund the start-up costs of the project.

Selwyn District Council’s Waste Manager, Andrew Boyd is extremely positive about the potential of this unique plan.

“It’s great to see a problematic material in the waste stream being tackled through a community led initiative,” he said.

“After much research on the safe storage of batteries, a container was commissioned and has been filling up with common household batteries at a rapid rate,” reported Dave Fitzjohn, project manager for Lincoln Envirotown.

Lincoln Envirotown will soon make the first delivery of batteries for recycling to Ecotech Services, where they will be sorted, discharged where necessary, and stored for shipment to specialist recycling plants overseas.

As far as anyone is aware there is no household battery recycling with the ease of a ‘drop off’ at a local retailer anywhere in New Zealand. This exciting ‘first’ for Selwyn fulfils the important objective of keeping toxic materials out of landfills and is another step towards achieving environmental goals. In some European countries it is compulsory to recycle household batteries.

“The hope is to start other ‘stations’ at retail outlets around Selwyn, but in the

meantime everyone is urged to keep their batteries out of bins and bring them to New World in Lincoln,” Dave concluded.

To the Editors: Last Tuesday I took my children to the Springfield Hall. After a fabulous time we hopped into our car parked on the road. Within minutes of putting seatbelts on, starting my car, and looking into the rear vision mirror, I saw to my horror a blue van coming towards us at what looked like 100km. The impact forced my car into the car in front with my foot still firmly on the brake!

We were very lucky to escape unharmed. After the accident, I went through the ‘Sucks’: • Sucks that my car is damaged at the start of the holidays.

• Sucks that my car will devalue and will never be the same.

• Sucks that I will have to pay my excess as the other person has no insurance.

• Sucks that the person who caused this hasn’t apologised.

After the ‘Sucks’ came the ‘Blessings’: • It is a blessing that my children are OK. • It is a blessing that no one else was hurt.

• It is a blessing to have Ash, Elise, the man who helped my son • Mums/Dads, Emergency services, Nicola from Darfield Library who entertained the children again.

In conjunction with the Ashburton Wheels weeks (May 5th - May 21st) enthusiasts will get a rare opportunity to view a private tractor collection, seldom seen by the general public (www.wheelsweek.co.nz).

Proceeds from this event are to be donated toward the repair of the St Mark’s historic Mountford church situated in Rakaia.

Needless to say the Rakaia Parish are delighted to have been given such an unique opportunity for fundraising.

The Gothic style St Mark’s church was built in 1877, and is typical of Mountfort's simple timber churches constructed for small parishes. Unfortunately the cost of repairing earthquake damage to the walls and windows far exceeds the funds that the Parish has available. The current quotation is in the region of $17,000 with only $10,000 toward that total raised to date. The stained glass window is considered to be a ten year project as estimates could see it cost as much as $46,000 to restore.

Add to this the necessity to totally rewire the whole church and it’s easy to see why the

Parish are so appreciative of this fundraising assistance. The extensive tractor collection is owned by Mr and Mrs R. Bateman and is all housed indoors making for enjoyable viewing, whatever the weather.

Richard Bateman has always had an interest in vintage machinery, but running his business had always to take priority. Since arriving in New Zealand around sixteen years ago, he has been able to indulge his passion by collecting and restoring over one hundred tractors; all to full

Local dogs and their owners are on an unexpected mission working with Selwyn District Libraries to help children to improve their reading skills.

Paws for Reading is a new programme being launched in May. The programme is designed to provide an opportunity for children who are not confident reading aloud, or who need to develop their reading skills, to read to a friendly dog for fifteen minutes each week.

“We are excited about this new programme as similar ones overseas, and in New Zealand, have been shown to assist most children to improve their reading fluency and confidence,” said Selwyn Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon.

Carlyon The dogs being used in the reading programme are carefully selected by the Selwyn Dog Training Club to be suitable to work with children. The dogs are supervised by their owners while children read and library staff are also present at sessions.

The sessions are being trialled during term two at all local libraries and are open to primary school children. Sessions are free, but booking is required; check www.selwynlibraries.co.nz for details.

Selwyn District Libraries staff can also offer advice to parents on encouraging and supporting their child to read.

“Encouraging children to choose their own books is a great idea.

If children say they don’t enjoy reading, helping them find books about things they are interested in like horses, or planes, or their hobbies, can encourage them to spend time reading,” Vicki said.

“We have a huge range of books available in a variety of formats.

The range of eMagazines, and eBooks is increasing for children who prefer using tablets or computers and Library staff are always happy to chat to parents and children about what we can offer,” Vicki concluded.

The Malvern Squash Club held its AGM on Tuesday, March 21st and welcomed Chris van der Salm as their new President.

“Chris is a passionate squash player who brings with him an in -depth knowledge of the game and fantastic enthusiasm,” reported Squash Club spokesperson, Andrew McLeod.

“Chris has won several domestic titles, cementing his place as one of the top ten players in New Zealand and rising to 150th place in PSA world rankings.”

Chris’s domestic honours include: • New Zealand under 23 Champion 2016 and 2015 • Auckland Open 2015 - Winner • Oamaru Open 2015 - Winner • Nelson Open Winner 2016 and 2017 • as well as competing at tournaments in Australia, Malaysia, France, Germany, Austria, USA and England.

Malvern Squash Club’s seniors and juniors compete within the local interclub competition. “It’s a great way to play in a competitive environment while maintaining a social and relaxed atmosphere,” Andrew said. “After a test on the court there will always be food, drink and great company to enjoy afterwards.”

Mark Cornish and new President Chris have been running training sessions with junior players at the Squash Club on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings respectively. Chris also offers coaching to some of the senior players too. Expert coaching is on offer to any age or ability.

“A relaxed style, immense patience and an abundance of knowledge means that the benefactor of any coaching always achieves results. The success of the Club’s juniors is testament to this,” Andrew said.

“This year the Club has some great initiatives to re-energise their facilities and expand its membership.

We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and wish Chris a successful term in the role of President,” Andrew concluded.

The West Melton Bowling Club congratulates Roye Daniel and Vonnie Clark who both finished off a very good season by winning the Malvern Junior Pairs played on April 9th.

The Kirwee Fours is held annually at Kirwee and at this year’s event the fours team of Jeff Mugford, Mugford Brian Hecker, Hecker Owen Edgerton and Roye Daniel came away with the honours.

Fine weather and the much commented on outstanding soil conditions, at both the Seaton and Cridge properties where competition and practise was held respectively meant the results were purely indicative of the plough-person’s skill. From all the accounts in, it was clearly a wonderful weekend providing much fun and entertainment, as well as serious competition. 38 competitors tested their ability in the New Zealand Ploughing Championships at the Seaton’s Highfield Road, Courtenay property - fitting as this was the site of the first ploughing match held 150 years ago.
