Earlier in March New Zealand Golf selected a junior men’s team to represent New Zealand in the Australian Boys' Amateur Golf Championship in Wollongong and local golfer Dominic Brettkelly was named as a member. The tournament which took place from April 5th to 7th, is open to players aged under eighteen years on the first day of play. It is contested over 72-holes stroke play (cut after 36-holes).The first Australian Boys’ Amateur Championship was played in 1982 over 54-holes stroke play for players under 21 years of age.

The New Zealand team travelled over to Australia and had a couple of practise rounds scheduled before the competition, to familiarise

The Freeman siblings, Tom and Poppy of Hororata have again excelled in the water when they both competed in more of the seven New Zealand Ocean Swim events. While Poppy gained success at Corsair Bay this year, Tom didn’t compete in that particular event, he did however take to the sea in the Bay of Islands Classic. This was held at Paihia in the North Island, on March 18th and saw Tom coming in with a creditable

third in both the 200 metres and the 300 metre events.

The pair then swam in the King of the Bays event held at Takapuna Beach on April 8th.

In the years 7 and 8 class Poppy swam her way to second place in the 200 metres. Tom, swimming in the 11 and 12 year old class also brought in a second placing. Tom then competed in the one kilometre race and in the Under 14 class achieved a fourth place. This

was Tom’s first attempt at the one kilometre distance and he now has his sights set on a 3.2 kilometre event to be held at Pahhia next season.

Poppy has gained entry to the Jetstar Super Swim camp to be held on May 6th and 7th in Auckland, following her win in the Ocean Swim series at Corsair Bay earlier in the year.

Tom also attended this prestigious camp last year, by gaining a Canterbury win.

Both children swim and train at Canterbury Swim School and Waitaha Swim Club.

Malvern Community Board (MCB) recently purchased a handmade quilt at a fundraising auction the proceeds of which went to the Friends of Darfield Hospital. MCB have donated this quilt for display at the Darfield Library and service Centre.

MCB received a number of requests from committees that the Board are now required to address. The Board is taking a closer interest in ensuring that the matters raised for attention by local committees are addressed promptly, thus meeting minutes are now sent to the Board secretary in the first instance for inclusion on each Board agenda. This allows full Board discussion and satisfaction with a process that delivers good outcomes.

Board members will attend ANZAC day services at varying venues throughout the area.

MCB draws the attention of the community to the forthcoming SDC green waste and scrap metal day to be held April 29th, Hawkins Pit, Darfield. Nominal charges are to be made for this with all monies going to the M a l v e r n L i o ns fo r t he continuance of their community work.

The SDC draft Annual Plan is now out for consultation. MCB will be submitting and if there are any aspects on which the community would like the Board to advocate, they should contact a Board member in the first instance.

This result was just the catalyst Chris needed to further develop and expand his already successful enterprise - with the latest addition being that of setting up in Selwyn. His business has already doubled in size and created numerous

employment opportunities for talented, up and coming staff and now locals can experience the Hair4Men expertise in the new South Point complex on Faringdon Boulevard, Rolleston.

“Currently we have a mobile service in Geraldine, the main shop in Ashburton, employing several barbers, and now this new shop in Rolleston,” Chris explained. “We intend to have at least four barbers operating full time and see this new retail complex, that already has a variety of shops, as being the

ideal place for a top-class barber’s to be located.”

Barber Craft comes up again in May and Chris is sharpening his scissors in preparation. Practise makes perfect and Chris would love to see Selwyn folk in his Rolleston barber shop helping him hone his skills.

“Who knows,” he commented maybe this year the coveted Barber Craft trophy may make its home in Selwyn.”

On May 13th Firefighters will be pushed to their limits as they take part in the Sky Tower Stair Climb and raise much needed funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer (LBC) New Zealand. LBC receives no government funding and is the national charity to support children and adults diagnosed with blood cancer (such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma). The Sky Tower has 51 flights of stairs with 1,103 steps. Nine hundred firefighters from New Zealand and around the world will converge on the Tower hoping to raise over $1 million dollars for LBC - all wearing full kit and breathing apparatus (which weighs between 25-30kg) - just to make the task all the more difficult. The event will be streamed live on the day.

From this area two teams will undertake the challenge and two individuals: The Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade will be represented by Dale Evans (Captain), Richard Rowlands, Rowlands and Stu Begg.

Begg The Dunsandel Brigade will see Matt McIntyre (Captain), Matt Boon and Nick Boon giving it their all while Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade has two individual entrants training hard to compete.

The two individual entries from Darfield, Philip Hunt and Chris Bulovic, Bulovic have been training over the past few months in full firefighting gear and are often joined by friends, colleagues and fellow firefighters to keep their spirits up and support them.

Their training has included ascending Rapaki Track (“even on a 31 degree day,” Chris

Philip will be participating for the fourth time and also competes in the Eureka Tower climb in Melbourne, as well as a number of other events. He commented that he is extremely grateful for the support of the community.

This will be Chris’s first stair climb event - having previously only participated in the Rapaki Christchurch Earthquake Memorial Climb twice. “I’m honoured to be a part of the event and every donation I have received, not only helps LBC, but also gives me a sense of responsibility to do my donors’ proud,” he said. “I try not to think too much about the event as the nerves get a little frayed!”

Ploughing Matches have a long history in this area with one of the first taking place in the Courtenay area in 1867 at the back of the woolshed on the Desert run.

The following year, the match near White's Accommodation House drew an entry of twentyfive teams. In 1870, an unbroken piece of ground was used and it was reported that the tussocks were a trial to those competing. It was customary apparently, after the ploughing matches, to go to one of the accommodation houses for dinner - however eventually ploughing matches ceased to be annual events perhaps because on these occasions there was a too liberal patronage of the refreshment booth!

In 1922, the Courtenay Ploughing Match Association and the Paparua Ploughing Match Association were amalgamated to form the Courtenay-Paparua Ploughing Match and Dog T rial s Association. During periods of war the Association went into recess - 1935-39 and again from 1940-46.

On April 22nd and 23rd the Courtenay-Paparua Ploughing Association will not only celebrate their 150th anniversary, but will also host the 62nd New Zealand Ploughing Championships at 1900 Highfield Road, Courtenay (between the Old West Coast

As well as all the skill and competitiveness of the ploughing, organisers have added entertainment, displays and stalls to keep all those attending, entertained and wellfed.

Pedalamania is always a winner and will be there, along with animals from Arion farm and pony rides. There will be Clydesdale horses pulling ploughs, plus tractors galore both old and new. Children can enjoy a play pit full of sawdust with toys to play on and with, for as long as they choose followed by the opportunity to buy one or more of the minidiggers, tractors etc by tender.

Organisers have arranged some awesome prizes for the children’s colouring competition - and the mini-jeep rides are bound to be popular.

“I would imagine the best viewing would be between 10am and 3pm on both days,” said a spokesperson for the Courtenay -Paparua Ploughing Association.

“The official opening takes place at 10am on Saturday, April 22nd by Selwyn’s Mayor Sam Broughton and the tractors will be piped out to their plots by local resident Fred Bull.

Bull Three locals competing against the rest of the nation to represent New Zealand in the World Ploughing Match next year are Jeff Cridge, Cridge Ashley Seaton and Simon Reed and we would love the district to come along and support them in their quest,” they concluded.

“Our Darfield Community Garden has had its first growing season, reported Rhyannon Gregg, Gregg a Community Garden Spokesperson To celebrate this and the addition of new signage and notice board, the group held a much enjoyed, and well attended, barbecue.

The notice board has a plan of the garden so visitors can see what the group hope to achieve. “We have four good sized garden beds which we are now busy planting with winter vegetables,” Rhyannon commented. “I can’t thank local businesses and the community enough for their donations of goods and support. They have definitely assisted with getting the garden to where it is now,” she added.

“Our next goal is to get a shed in which to store all the tools, wheelbarrow and barbecue that we have been donated, and for which we are extremely grateful,” Rhyannon said.

“We need to keep on spreading the word and using the garden, as it is for our whole community,” she concluded.

conclusion. The group feels extremely fortunate to have been chosen as the fundraising recipient of the event, held this year at the Hororata Golf Club's course at Glentunnel on, May 11th. So popular, in fact, is the event that the tournament is now entirely full and anyone still interested in entering a team will need to add themselves to the ‘wait list’.

While the Plunket committee are dedicated to providing families in the area with activities and services and assisting to connect parents with others, they are also working hard to fundraise for much needed renovations to the Darfield Plunket rooms, so the proceeds of this tournament will greatly assist with this. The proposed renovations will make the Darfield Plunket rooms more user friendly and spacious, as well as enable them to have the capacity to host bigger groups.

“We rely solely on the generosity of the local community, grant s and

fundraisers for the upkeep and improvement of this building,” said Plunket committee spokesperson Ainsley Bell, Bell “so we feel extremely fortunate to be able to benefit from the funds made through this tournament.”

“Although all tournament places are now full, sponsorship and donations for raffle prizes are still being gratefully received,” Ainsley commented (contact darfieldplunkettoylibrary@hotm ail.com or a member of the Malvern Lions to assist).

“We ask that all players assemble for morning tea by 10.45am with a shot gun, multi tee start at 11.30am, in an Ambrose competition style,” Ainsley added. “A complimentary lunch and afternoon tea will also be provided.

“We are really overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community in donating some amazing raffle prizes, and these will be sold and drawn on the day,” she concluded.

Annabel’s Educare recently received a visit from Mr Hoy’s, Hoy’s Darfield High School’s, year 8 class.

The visit was initiated by teachers from both the High School and Educare in order for the year 8 students to view the Educare vegetable garden environment; as the students are currently planning their own vegetable garden at the School.

Pupils were welcomed into Educare by the two year old children singing their ‘Welcome’ song before the year 8 students joined them in Educare mattime. The High School pupils were able to support the younger children during this participation in mat-time activities and to also to lend assistance with handwashing before kai time. Everyone joined together for a group morning tea outside.

The year 8 students, along with the two year old children, explored the outside environment together. “The older children showed some wonderful role modelling and supported the two year olds in play,” reported Leigh Sinclair (Centre Manager). “There was some wonderful interaction between the older students and the younger children.

“Finally the year 8 class had real business to attend to, and viewed the vegetable gardens of both the nursery and the two

year olds. They gathered ideas for their own garden, before heading back to class.

“Educare thoroughly enjoyed hosting Mr Hoy and his Darfield High School year 8 class and we would like to keep that link open next term with Educare visiting the High school. At this visit it is planned that the year 8 students will read books to our children and we will be able to touch base with the progress on their garden developments,” Leigh concluded.

There’s a growing understanding among Selwyn residents that planting natives alongside productive farmland is not such a bad idea. It’s a lot easier to do with the right advice and support from the community. Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust hosted their annual ‘Plantout Tour’ on Sunday, April 9th in two locations across the Selwyn District with an ever growing number of interested people.

On Sunday morning in Hororata, Colin Meurk, Meurk Landcare Research Associate and Ecologist engaged the crowd for almost two hours with his outstanding knowledge of native plants and how to plan a restoration project. A number of farmers who have been planting now annually for a number of years also shared their insights about

site preparation, maintenance, and which plants were doing really well. It was recommended to take a long-term approach; planting a few hundred every year, and therefore not getting overwhelmed by maintenance of competitive weeds. One of the landowners, Tony Edwards, Edwards commented, “why wouldn’t I want to spend time amongst these native plants?” A few years back he was hesitant to start planting, and now he wants to do more every year. Some of Tony’s plants are now taller than he is, only three years after planting, and they are really starting to change the landscape. One of the couples commented at the end of the morning tour: “Thanks for today. We loved the experience, learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the company of the

people we met.” They are keen to become volunteers for Spring planting this year and would like to establish their own ‘Greendot’ with the Trust’s support in the future.

Elizabeth Guthrey, Guthrey Coordinator Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust said, “a number of key suggestions were: • Seek advice for appropriate plants for your soil type and micro climate.

• Have a restoration plan that starts with planting more shrubs, and waits until there is some cover before planting the larger podocarp trees.

• Reduce the ‘edge effect’ by making wider strips of planting to ensure higher survival rates and a better size of habitat for birds.

• Choose eco-sourced seeds from this region and request this from your plant nursery.

This will ensure your plants are mostly well adapted to your environment.

The Trust discussed various funding programmes they host, at the event, including the Community Environment Fund (Ministry for the Environment) and the Selwyn Natural Environment Fund. Check out the Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust www.kakariki.org.nz for advice and support.
