Appearing as if by magic on the walls of the Farmlands building, South Terrace, Darfield is a mural created entirely by hand ripped, masking tape. This unique mural, created by Struan Ashby and Erica Duthie took the pair a day and a half to complete and has been inspired by local stories and folks from the local community. The second temporary tape mural is to be made by local students and artists and will appear on the same wall, after the first is removed.

On Tuesday, April 4th pupils in the intermediate school years gathered at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, Rolleston for the Canterbury Swimming Championships. The day, which began at 9:15am, attracted 327 children from fourteen schools.

On Thursday, April 6th it was the turn of primary schools to compete and this saw 740 children from 88 schools, take to the pool.

All competitors had previously competed in their school and zone sports to qualify for this large event. Many Malvern children were successful in being chosen to take part, with some producing personal bests and pleasing results.

Holly Smith swam in the Champs for Hororata Primary School in the ten year old girls class. As well as her relay event (swimming for Darfield in the ten year old mixed team), Holly could choose only two other events to compete in. She chose Freestyle and Breaststroke with outstanding results. Holly finished fifth in the freestyle and gained a first placing in the breaststroke. Holly’s elder brother Ben was also chosen to compete in the intermediate section representing Darfield High School. He swam in a relay team, as well as Freestyle and Breaststroke, coming home with creditable eighth and sixth placings respectively.

‘Modern Medieval’ is the theme for Creative Fibre NZ Runway Challenge part of the National festival ‘Entwine’ to be held in Christchurch this month and a group from the local Malvern Spinners and Weavers have taken up the gauntlet!

The challenge isn’t about producing a medieval costume, but to take the elements of medieval dress and incorporate it in an outfit that could be worn today. This inaugural challenge looks to have been a resounding success with 21 teams from all over the country taking to the runway on the evening of April 22nd, at the Chateau in the Park, Christchurch.

The Malvern group found the easiest part was to come up with lots of inspired ideas, while the hardest was to discard some of them and finally settle on an outfit.

“There are a few parts to the Challenge,” reported one of the Group’s members, Ann Forbes,

“one was to document the design and making process by keeping a journal which would be presented with the garments for judging.

“The local entrants wanted to showcase as many of their skills as possible and managed this amply by incorporating not only spinning, weaving and felting, but also patternmaking, sewing and not to give too much away ‘special dying and knotting’,” Ann added. “The final touches are now being added in preparation for April 22nd’s big reveal.”

“We are so looking forward to the festival; its exhibition, workshops and lectures. It has been a pleasure and a lot of fun working on the projects and with the outstanding talent amongst Group members.

After many months of hard work, it was an exciting moment for members of the Lake Coleridge Tourism Group when the new Lake Coleridge area website went live. The website, loaded with additional features and a fresh contemporary design, was part of a two year programme to renew the Group’s promotional material.

In addition, recently completed walking and area brochures, display signage and updated roadside notice boards support the website and bring a new dimension to promotional activities in the Coleridge area.

Group chairperson, Lyn Nell, Nell said it had been a busy two years, but a very worthwhile project for the Group. “We were fortunate to have ex-Lake Coleridge Lodge owner, Toni Barlow, Barlow lead the project and her wealth of experience in the communications area was a great help to us.”

Funding for the project came

primarily from fundraising sales West of Windwhistle, an area oral history produced by the Group in 2005.

“With less than fifty books left, we’ve almost sold out of our second edition, but this time we’re unlikely to reprint,” Lyn added. “Proceeds from book sales have produced a secure, long term funding base for the Group, a comforting thought when we’re faced with expensive projects such as our recent update.”

The Lake Coleridge Tourism group has operated for over fifteen years with its twentymember base - representing food and accommodation operators and high country recreational opportunities.

Initiated by the Hororata Community Trust, the group has recently combined marketing forces with the newly established Hororata Heritage group to promote both areas at events such as the Hororata Highland Games.

“The Trust’s extensive resources have been utilised to give us further leverage in an increasingly competitive market, a synergy that works well for both groups,” Lyn commented.

The Lake Coleridge group meets infrequently, but the annual meeting on May 9th is looked forward to by operators as a time to welcome new members and reacquaint with the activities of the old.

“With more and more community members deriving additional income from tourism, the Group’s strength is a great asset to the area,” Lyn said, “I hope the new promotional resources will give us the multifunctional versatility needed to maintain the group’s current vitality and lead us forward into an exciting future,” she concluded.

Horncastle Arena was literally awash with foodies for last weekend’s Food Show. The News was thrilled to be able to draw two names who then received a pair of free tickets to the event, each.

Fluctuating water flows in the Selwyn area are nothing new for Greendale farmer Doug Gough.

Gough Farming on the banks of the Selwyn River, the fifth generation farmer’s understanding of the catchment has been honed through experience and exposure to the River’s varying flows.

“It always goes underground at the Main South Road at Dunsandel and it is normal to be underground at this time of year.”

“People complain about the River being dry, but we have never swum in this stretch of the Selwyn, it’s always very dry.

The Waimakariri River at Sheffield went dry one summer in the 1900’s before irrigation came about. Low river flows are not a new thing.”

The way farmers and the Regional Council manage waterways has changed significantly in the past few decades and Doug added that’s also had an impact.

“If you go back fifty years, there was much more intervention by the catchment boards, now there’s a completely different approach. It’s more of a userpays situation.”

With less flood control work, vegetation has taken off in the main stem of the river, particularly gorse and broom.

“My father remembers the riverbed was completely free of gorse and broom, it was back to back clear shingle. Today there’s very little exposed shingle compared to ten-fifteen years ago.”

As gorse and broom are legumes, Doug believes they release nitrates into the waterways which could be a contributor to the catchment’s nitrate problems. Changes in the foothills are also impacting on the availability of water.

“There’s a lot more forestry planted in the foothills behind Whitecliffs and Glentunnel which has been taking up water as opposed to letting it run off.”

Irrigation is not a major determinant of what’s happens to the Selwyn River in the mid Plains, as there’s no irrigation above the farm, just to the sides, Doug said. Further more, the farm’s irrigation well is not linked hydraulically to the Selwyn River because of its depth.”

The biggest variable affecting

the river’s flow is rainfall, and Doug commented that despite recent rain - the last three winters have been extremely dry.

“In 2013 we had a very wet winter and our well level at 60m deep rose significantly because of the winter recharge, both snow and rain. The three winters since have been very dry. Yes there has been rain but not enough to saturate the soil and go through.”

The wet spring provided a ‘reprieve’ for many farmers, but

the on-going dry has resulted in declining or absent flows at Coes Ford and other lower parts of the catchment.

“If we look at the Selwyn River and look at Coes Ford, and the amount of development that has gone on with septic tanks and lifestyle blocks in the area, there’s a lot of water being taken out and effluent being put into the ground. However there will be opportunities with Central Plains Water to augment the Selwyn River through the releasing of flows,” Doug ended.

network, a system where anyone in New Zealand can become a public drop-off point for TerraCycle’s recycling programmes.

Founded in 2001, TerraCycle, Inc., is the world’s leader in the collection and repurposing of hard-to-recycle post-consumer waste, ranging from used chip bags to coffee capsules to cigarette butts. The waste is collected through free, national, brand-funded recycling programmes, as well as various consumer and governmentfunded models. The collected waste is reused, upcycled or recycled into a variety of affordable, sustainable consumer products and industrial applications. Each year, across 21 countries, T erraCycle collects and repurposes billions of pieces of waste, donating millions of dollars to schools and charities in the process. To learn more about TerraCycle visit: www.terracycle.com.au From used yoghurt pouches and oral care products, to coffee capsules and plastic food storage products, TerraCycle’s programmes tackle tricky items that cannot be thrown in the Council recycling bin. The recycling programmes are free to sign up to and easy to participate in. It’s as simple as creating a TerraCycle account, signing up to individual recycling programmes, and then collecting waste in any box or bag. Then, participants can download a prepaid shipping label from their account, affix it to the box, and drop the box off at their nearest New Zealand Post outlet to be sent back to TerraCycle.

To become a public drop-off point, those same participants simply need to apply via

TerraCycle’s online form. Once approved, they will be added to TerraCycle’s interactive map where members of the public can find their nearest drop-off point. The process for collecting and sending waste remains the same.

The following TerraCycle recycling programmes offer public drop-off point options: • Fonterra Pouch Recycling Programme • GLAD Food Storage Recycling Programme • Nescafe Dolce Gusto Capsule Recycling Programme • Oral Care Recycling Programme sponsored by Colgate.

TerraCycle’s public drop-off network comprises all kinds of locations, including schools, sports clubs, community centres, libraries, offices, and even homes. By becoming a public drop-off point, participants can give everyone the opportunity to drop off their waste for recycling, and in turn help TerraCycle collect higher quantities of waste, which increases efficiency and is better for the environment.

TerraCycle’s recycling programmes also give back to the community through their points schemes. For each piece of waste sent in to TerraCycle, collectors receive two cents, which can be donated to their chosen not-for-profit group or school. Participants who are public drop-off locations can raise more money for their chosen school or not-for-profit organisation by sending in larger quantities of waste.

Sheffield Garden Club held their March and April meetings on cold wet days, hence the small number of members in attendance.

A warm welcome was given to Carol Brookling, our speaker in March. Her subject was Dahlias which was quite fitting with the Malvern Show just around the corner.

We ended the day with a committee meeting to discuss the final arrangements for the Show.

Well done to everyone who participated in the Show. There were some beautiful displays of artistic talent in the many categories. A huge thank you to our judges and stewards. Our AGM was held on April 4th, with a good turn out of members. Office bearers have remained the same as last year with the addition of a vice president, Theckla Barnhill. We have had an interesting list of ideas for our next twelve months so within the next few weeks we will draw up the programme for the coming year.

David Adams gave us an interesting talk and covered quite a few subjects from climate change to daffodil bulbs. Our sales table had all sorts of goodies to gather up and take home. A lovely afternoon tea ended the day.

I would also like to say thank you to everyone for your vote of confidence, voting me in as your president for another year. They do say things get easier with practice.
