Orion turned the lights back on to the Selwyn Gallery last Friday, March 17th, after repairing the ninety year old building following damage sustained during the 2010/11 earthquakes.

Built in 1927 as the local power board office, the Selwyn Gallery building is owned by Orion.

Advances in remote management of power technology have meant Orion now occupies a small space in the rear of the building. For the past seventeen years the building has been home to the Selwyn Gallery, managed by the Malvern Community Arts Council.

Orion CEO Rob Jamieson said he is pleased to be returning the building to the community.

“The Selwyn Gallery is an essential part of the history of both Darfield and Orion. The earthquakes taught us all that a strong sense of community is indispensable and it was important to both Orion and the wider Darfield community that the building be repaired.

“We are pleased to give the building a new lease on life so it can continue to provide a

showcase for local artists for years to come.

“With many historic buildings lost in the area, it was a good opportunity to play a part in the refurbishment of a treasured local community facility,” Rob said.

Repairs included repairing the gallery ceilings, wall linings, exterior brickwork and repainting. Some structural steel was also added to strengthen the 1960’s addition to the original 1927 brick building.

Woodlands Park Day-de-Light (Sparkle), Kirkwood Blacklight x Woodlands Park Alexandra, once again took top honours at HOY (Horse of the Year) held March 7th - 12th at Hastings.

This handsome, black 148cm gelding was bred by Helen Williams from Darfield and her daughters Rebecca RamsayRamsaySmith and Jocelyn Thrower handled and gave early education to this youngster. He was successful in the youngstock classes at the various shows.

After being sold to the North Island he then changed hands again. His new owners wanted a pony for pony club and jumping

but friends encouraged this “non-interested in shows” family to enter the local A & P Show. From then on the Aplin family became hooked and young Rebecca Aplin with help from friends and tutors has become a very competent rider showing ‘Sparkle’ off to full advantage.

This was the fourth time the pair have entered HOY, the horse/pony has to qualify with top placings at selected shows within the previous twelve months.

At each of these four HOY’s he has achieved top results with titles. Rebecca has now reached the age limit for

showing ponies (but can still ride in dressage).

They have finished this HOY with a great flourish winning the following titles; 148cm Pony of the Year, Paced and Mannered Pony of the Year, NZ Riding Pony of the Year, First in level four Dressage and several other placings.

Luckily these classes were held before the down pour of rain which cancelled the final remaining events.

‘Sparkle’ and Rebecca, over fifteen months ago represented NZ at Werribee with several other New Zealanders and their mounts.

Cattle entries include up to fifty cattle beasts on display in the British, European and Other Breed sections followed by the All Breeds. With one of the best exhibiting rings in the country, this section will be stewarded by cattle convenor Tim Wright with his wife Emma, Emma sister Fiona and brother Will, Will making sure all judging runs smoothly on the day. Over the weekend of April, 21st23rd, Hororata Primary School will hold their fourth fundraising Pig and Possum hunt. Begun in 2014, the Hororata Primary School Pig and Possum Hunt is the result of parents uniting resources and ideas, to come up with something which not only raises funds for the school, but also brings the community together. As with any event that benefits the local community, organisers are always on the look out for volunteers to assist in any way they can - please approach committee members on the day or contact Hororata School directly if you are interested in assisting.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event go back to Hororata Primary School and organisers are anticipating that this year’s will be the best hunt yet.

“We are consistently attracting over one hundred entries and on the weigh-in day even more spectators,” said a spokesperson for the organisers. “We have a strong focus on children and the

feedback we receive is that people are looking at this event very positively, as not only are we getting families out and about together, but we are also adding to our community,” they commented.

The weigh-in will take place on Sunday, April 23rd at the Hororata Domain. The event has been designed with children in mind, and there are no entry fees charged for those under fifteen years of age. There are some fantastic prizes on offer for children across many categories.

There will be plenty on site to keep everyone entertained with raffle tickets being sold and children will be particularly interested in the Paintball competition. The ‘Shoot a celebrity’ event will have at least two sessions throughout the day and gives anyone who is keen, the opportunity to shoot this year’s turkeys! The turkeys will consist of not only Malvern School Principals but their board members too! This promises to be an entertaining day (with an animal entered, or not).

by Hon Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn, and it was a great success. The opening ceremony was well attended by local dignitaries, past pupils and BoT members. They all had an opportunity to walk through the new learning spaces as well as the upgraded Totara and Ti Kouka buildings. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton attended with Councillor Mark Alexander and

members of the Taumutu Marae blessed the building as part of the ceremony. Also in attendance was Justin ustin Tipa, Tipa the Kaikarakia who performed the ceremony, Liz Brown, Kaiarahi Matua at Canterbury University, Daphne O'Connell, O'Connell Chair of Kaumatua Council, Patrick Nutira, Nutira Deputy Chair and local Kaumatua and Margaret Joans, Joans Kaumatua. Past 2016 Head Students, Bella Groen and Alessandra Ward returned the first sod that was removed last year.

Oderings Garden Competition West Melton Primary gardening students, the Eco Warriors have done it again! They recently competed in the Oderings School Garden Competition, run by the Christchurch Horticultural Society. The Eco Warriors involved students from junior and senior classes and the theme of ‘Once Upon a Time’ refers to the wonderment of fairy tales, myths, including New Zealand legends and a glimpse into worlds that are far away from the present. The school was very excited to receive a Gold award.

Sound, workable legal advice and solutions Selwyn MP Amy Adams has welcomed the opportunity for local organisations to apply for extra funding for new tourism infrastructure in Selwyn.

“Tourism is now a $14.5 billion export earner for New Zealand, with 188,000 people working in the industry. These visitors are incredibly important to our economy, particularly in our regions,” Amy said.

“We need to provide core facilities to support this tourism growth and continue to attract high-value visitors. Such facilities benefit local residents and domestic tourists, as well as our international guests.

“In the last round of funding for the Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund, a total of

$3 million was allocated to the best fourteen projects. This saw the development of important amenities such as carparks, toilets, rubbish disposal and minor water management projects.

“Due to the initial success of this scheme, an additional $5.5 million has been made available for further tourism infrastructure developments.

This next round of funding could be an excellent opportunity to develop or improve tourism infrastructure in the Selwyn region,” Amy added.

Budget 2016 has allocated $12 million over four years for the Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund.

April 22nd and 23rd will see nearly forty competitors challenging each other for the Annual New Zealand Ploughing Championships. This event will be held at the Seaton brother’s property on Highfield Road, Kirwee, where the first match for the Courtenay-Paparua Ploughing Association was held 150 years ago.

Over the two days you will see conv e nt i o na l p l ou g hi n g, reversible ploughing, traditional horse drawn ploughing in all their regalia and vintage ploughing. All these classes are competing to be the best in their field in New Zealand.

Saturday 22nd will see the contestants plough a stubble paddock with Sunday 23rd being grass ploughing. The awards dinner is held on the Sunday night at the Kirwee Hall where the winners of the conventional and reversible ploughing classes will go on to represent New Zealand at the world ploughing match in Germany next year.

The cooler nights and cold mornings have now got rodents on the move. Even at my own home in the middle of the day I watched a mouse trying to get under my garage door. A pre-winter check is extremely advisable. When your garage door is closed make sure there are no gaps under the door or at the corners, especially check where the external reveals meet the concrete, at many homes these stop short and mice can walk straight through and get either inside the garage or into your walls. The gap size you are looking for is anything you can fit the end of a biro (the end with the clip on it) you might think that is impossible, but mice have an incredible ability to go through small holes. The other places to check are the weep holes in any brick work and gaps around waste outlets at gully traps. You may think mice are cute wee guys, but unfortunately they are filthy and can cause terrible damage inside people's homes eg. ea ng the insula on around wiring, causing a risk of fire and electrical injury. One of the easiest ways of keeping the numbers down is rat bait sta ons on the outside of your home, which are lockable and safe. We suggest using rat sta ons as rats can't get into a mouse sta on, but both can use a rat sta on. About three sta ons placed around the outside walls of most homes is enough to keep the numbers down, check them about every three weeks, if there is no ac vity move them to a new loca on. It is far beRer to control them outside, rather than let them get in and risk that horrible smell and damage. The smell is them urina ng, they dribble urine about three thousand mes a day. So basically everywhere they walk is a trail of urine, this can be disease causing and is obviously not clean inside our homes. South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) are just about here (March 29th -31st), and with more than 600 exhibitors they promise to have something for everyone.

New for 2017 is a lifestyle section with exhibits for the whole family, and because it is election year, you can expect politicians to be on hand. Prime Minister Bill English is scheduled to visit on the second day of the event.

SIAFD media spokesperson Daniel Schat added that the volunteers and community groups who run the Field Days are well-prepared and the scene is set for a great show.

“Machinery demonstrations are a big part of South Island Field Days, and because we are just twenty minutes from Christchurch airport, we offer farmers and contractors throughout New Zealand an inexpensive way to check out and compare the latest gear,” Daniel said.

“This year we have good crops of maize, fodder beat, pasture and oats ready for the harvest machinery. Cultivation and seeding machinery will also be in action.”

“Field Days are a time when machinery manufacturers and distributors release new products and there are always some great deals to be had, so it should be

of real interest to anyone who is serious about agricultural machinery.”

SIAFD organising committee member Tony Redmond leases the SIAFD site when the Field Days are not on, and Daniel said Tony had done an excellent job making sure the crops are ready and well-watered. Irrigation is applied with a pivot irrigator that local company Think Water Leeston has donated to the cause.

“The lifestyle section adds something new to the Field Days,” Daniel said. “We have fifty exhibitors lined up to display products ranging from model trains and spa pools to dog control systems and solar water or power units.”

Other special events at SIAFD include Farm Trader magazine’s Top Tractor Shootout 2017. The Shootout will compare variable transmission tractors made by the world’s leading brands.

Judges will test the tractors on a range of criteria including performance and affordability.

Two fencing competitions will also be held during the Field Days,

and another popular event is the Agri-Innovation awards. These awards recognise New Zealandmade innovations or inventions.

Implements, attachments, or tools used in agriculture or other types of primary production are eligible and entrants are given a chance to demonstrate their inventions.

SIAFD is a non-profit organisation made up of farmers and others in the agricultural industry and Rodney stressed that the Field Days would not be possible without the work of volunteers and community groups, along with Friends of the Field Days who donate equipment and services.

The event is a good community fundraising opportunity for local schools and Young Farmers who help with parking, running the tills, the entrance, and clean up.

“Without their help and the work of the voluntary organising committee, SIAFD would not be possible. We give them all our heartfelt thanks,” Rodney ended.

The last event in 2015 attracted more than 27,500 people and organisers anticipate this number or more in 2017.

Lindsay Thian is a well known agricultural contractor in Canterbury, specialising in drilling and planting for over thirty years. This season his son William joined the business and together they have added windrowing to the list of services on offer having recently purchased a MacDon Windrower. As a young contractor back in the 1980’s and 90’s, Lindsay owned two Hesston Windrowers and for over ten years windrowed locally gaining many years of experience. Vintage machines will come together in Leeston for the Ellesmere Vintage Fair, to be held at the A & P Showgrounds on March 25th and 26th.

Over 100 vintage and classic tractors will be on show, dating from the early 1900’s, up to present day machines. A popular drawcard will be the fore runners to the tractor, the steam traction engine. We hope

to have at least a dozen of these machines in attendance, and will put on working displays including threshing and heavy haulage. Veteran, vintage and classic cars and trucks from the local area and further afield will come together at the Leeston Showgrounds, a petrol head’s dream.

A large variety of food and craft stalls will complete the vintage

fair atmosphere. Entertainment for the children will include carnival rides and kids games, even a mass tug of war with a steam engine.

The organisers of the event are the Ellesmere Vintage Club Inc. The club has approximately 100 members who share interests of anything old and mechanical.

Being a rural area, many club members collect, restore and display vintage tractors and farm machinery. Members also have vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles, memorabilia and anything else old and collectable. The club takes pride in raising funds to put back into the community.

This event is no different, with all profits going to Abbeyfield Ellesmere, a 100% community owned housing complex for older people who are able to keep their independence without needing to rely on a care facility.

After eight years of planning by local dedicated volunteers, construction finally began in 2016. The funds raised will go towards the fitting out of the rooms.
