Her Majesty the Queen, Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, has on the recommendation of the New Zealand Priory Chapter, recently sanctioned a number of admissions to, and promotions in, the Order of St John.

St John, which has unbroken links back to the medieval Order of St John, is an independent part of the New Zealand Royal Honours System.

They confer membership of the Lynda Walter.

Order of St John on individuals who have acted conspicuously in carrying out the mission of St John New Zealand.

Darfield’s Ross Meder and Lynda Walter have just been named as members of St John.

Ross and Lynda will now have their honour officially conferred at an Investiture ceremony, presided over by The Governor General (who is the Prior of St John in New Zealand – the head of St John in this country).

Individuals are not officially members of the Order of St John until conferred at an Ross Meder.

The phenomenal success of preloved clothing and accessories store Carol’s Closet at Hororata has seen them arrange a late night opening to accommodate shoppers.

The venture, which is the brainchild of Carol Gurney (hence the name) is a fundraiser for Hororata’s St John’s Church and is now nearing the end of its first month of operation.

“We have had such fun in the last month,” Carol enthused, “attracting visitors to the Closet from all over the globe. Happy, happy people with bargains they couldn’t imagine before they popped in.”

“We’ve had lots of satisfied customers, several of them wearing their bargains out of the shop!

“The quality of our contributed clothing and accessories has been outstanding, and this has set the tone and the style,” Carol added. “Thank you to everyone who has donated so

Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade have just completed their Waterways season by competing at the Nationals, held in Northland, last weekend.

Waterways Challenge consists of nine different events where firefighters compete in a gruelling hose running and pump operating competition.

The Darfield team, once again

consisting of Bryan Thomas, Thomas Alan Kittelty and Joost Kepers had a much shorter season than normal, attending only two events prior to these Nationals.

Their first event was the Canterbury Provincial Waterways Challenge where they were placed second behind Rangiora.

Following that they travelled to Ross (West Coast) for the United Fire Brigade Association Region 3 Event which they can be proud to say they won.

The National’s competition, which is held every two years, proved to be a bit of a challenge for the Darfield team.

While finishing in the top ten, rather than a win which they’ve experienced in the past, wasn’t the hoped-for result - the team can definitely still hold their heads high.

Comments heard at the event, and directed at the Darfield contestants were all positive, “they may not be the top team in the country this year, but they’re still a ‘top team’”.

The dynamic Darfield team will now have another year to decide if they want to focus and hone their skills ready for next season’s Waterways Challenges.

Cath Sharp, also from the Darfield Fire Brigade attended the event in her capacity as an official timekeeper.

Rolling into Castle Hill on Saturday, March 25th is the one -woman show, Rapanui - the song of stone. Lisa Allan, Allan the writer and performer, is a Nelson-based theatre creator who spent five weeks on Rapa Nui / Easter Island last year writing the show. Before her trip she learnt that New Zealand has its own place called Rapanui, the show connects these two.

Lisa has been creating theatre in New Zealand since 2002. She trained at the Hagley Theatre Company and went on to study at the University of Canterbury

where she co-formed ‘The Loopen Experiment’. This theatre company created original and experimental works which culminated with a tour of New Zealand and South America in 2007. For the next two years, Lisa ran Blackbird Theatre. She taught physical theatre classes in Christchurch and directed a number of her original plays.

Lisa and her husband Dan, moved to Nelson in 2010 and for the next six years they created a theatrical storm. They formed Body in Space Theatre Company, created the Nelson

Fringe Festival, Nelson/Tasman Theatre Sports Competition, children's theatre, an adult acting company who trained weekly, a monthly ‘improv’ show and much more. In 2015, they were awarded Nelsonians of the Year (arts) and then they proceeded to fall over exhausted!

Rapanui - the song of stone is Lisa taking a break from organising a heap of (wonderful) people and singing her heartsong in another way.

This play tells a cosmic story that starts in the stars and reaches all the way to Earth. It comes from stone. ‘Hold stone close. Hear its song. And let your heart remember’.

“Lisa is a generous, beautiful and engaging presence,” The Pantograph commented.

Rapanui - the song of stone plays on Saturday, March 25th at the Castle Hill Village Hall.

Lisa will also offer a Restorative Yoga class and an ‘improv’ class.

An international public art team will work with local school students and artists, passing on their skills in tape art mural making as part of a week long artist-in-residency.

The Darfield Tape Art Residency will include the creation of two temporary murals on the Farmlands, South Terrace, wall, made entirely out of hand ripped masking tape.

The first mural, created by Struan Ashby and Erica Duthie, Duthie will be inspired by local stories and include portraits of folks from the local community. After an intensive workshop series hosted by Darfield High School, the second temporary tape mural will be made by local students and artists on the same wall, after the first is removed.

There will be an opportunity for the public to try their hand drawing with tape at the Darfield Library in a drop-in-drawing session and they can hear more about the amazing adventures of this talented pair in an artist talk.

Erica and Struan developed their tape art drawing as a playful form of street art when they were art students at Canterbury University. Since

then they have transformed buildings and art museum frontages, all over the world.

The pair have produced their massive wall artworks in the US, Bangkok, Dubai and Germany as well as closer to home all over New Zealand at festivals, events and in arts residencies.

“We love the energy of creating live improvised drawing,” commented Erica. “T he openness of our process as temporary public artists allows us to make highly topical, whimsical murals designed to be current and relevant - right now!” Struan added.

The residency is supported by Selwyn District Council’s Creative Community Scheme, Darfield High School, Darfield Library and Malvern Arts Council.

ARTHURS PASS VISIT • Last month we took our monthly Board Meeting to Arthur’s Pass. This was a very successful day, starting with a walk through the Township with Community Committee members and DOC representatives.

Discussions included the Wastewater System, Bealey River Stop Bank, Drains, Historical Cottages, Visitors Centre, Parking, Night Sky Tourism Attraction and the Railway Station Mural.

Council Staff will work with the Committee on questions and comments bought to our attention. We then moved to the Alpine Recycling Station where we were joined by Averil Stevenson from EcoCentral and Patrick Clancy from Waste Management NZ for the Official Opening. After our Board Meeting we

Selwyn District Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this week with Living Water, the Department of Conservation’s t e n y e ar, $ 2 0 m i l l io n partnership with Fonterra.

Through the Living Water partnership Fonterra and DOC will work with dairy farmers, iwi, conservation groups, councils, schools and other agencies to improve the health of five key catchments in significant dairying regions throughout the country.

The Living Water vision is for a sustainable dairy industry to be part of healthy functioning ecosystems that together enrich the lives of all New Zealanders.

The Ararira/LII catchment of Te Waihora /Lake Ellesmere is one of the five Living Water catchments.

Under the MOU, Living Water is helping the Selwyn District Council fund a Biodiversity Officer. They will be working to increase the abundance and variety of native wildlife in the Ararira/LII catchment. They will focus on the Yarrs Lagoon/ Ta-rere-kau-tuku area of the catchment and will be working with the community and other agencies.

Christchurch based DOC Operations Manager, Andy Thompson, said Yarr’s Lagoon/ Ta-rere-kau-tuku is key site for native wildlife in the Ararira/LII Catchment.

“I’m delighted the Living Water funding will enable the Selwyn District Council to focus on protecting and enhancing Yarr’s Lagoon/Ta-rere-kau-tuku, as this is a significant biodiversity hotspot in the Ararira/LII

Catchment.”

“I'm very happy to see Selwyn District Council play its part in efforts to support indigenous re -vegetation and increasing biodiversity in Canterbury,” commented Selwyn Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall.

Biodiversity Officer Andy Spanton joined Selwyn District Council recently and will be working with the Living Water team on activities and initiatives within the Ararira/LII subcatchment of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere that align with Living

Water’s goals.

Other aspects of Andy’s Biodiversity Officer role for Selwyn District Council are to carry out activities to support native biodiversity in the region, including the management of the Council’s Natural Environment Fund which assists native planting and biodiversity management on private land, and coordinating the identification and ecological assessment of significant native vegetation sites in the district.

Sunday, March 5th saw the annual Rugby Ten’s tournament take place in Kirwee. Two pools of five teams contested the trophy with a mixture of town and country Clubs participating.

When the heat soared to 22 degrees for the first game at 9.30am, the players knew they were in for a long, hot day.

Game One saw title favourites Lyttelton take on Oxford with the result well in favour of the boys from the docks. On field two, Diamond Harbour lost a close encounter to Christchurch 1912. Next up, host club Kirwee took on an invitational side from Sheffield. With a clutch of current and ex Kirwee players, as well as many a ring in, the boys from Malvern opened their tournament with a tidy win 1710. Despite playing with nine men due to a yellow card to Sheffield import Alan Nash, Nash the team held strong despite a late comeback from the host Club. A further seventeen games took place over the course of the day with all teams getting at least a win each. Lunch time entertainment included a kicking competition won by the red and black of Christchurch. Due to the intensity of all games played, the on site voluntary physio available to all teams was widely used with numerous early season injuries and ailments occurring. The Club BBQ was a great success along with DJ Singh Star providing running commentary, which kept all players and spectators well informed. The final at 3pm consisted of the experienced Lyttelton, playing surprise package Sheffield. With the scores close during mid way, the quality and cohesion of the port siders showed through, running away 28-14. Full credit to both teams putting on a classic final display.

Kirwee Club President Sam Truscott and Club Captain Ben Lill both commented that a cracker day was had by all.

“A massive thanks for the work of the Club committee during the day and the organising of the tournament by Kent Opie,” Opie the pair concluded.

Jane’s involvement with the Malvern Show started with the reintroduction of the beef cattle section in the 1990’s.

“I do remember Dad (Harley Harley Jenkins) Jenkins showing a Floridale Angus Bull when his cousin, Tom Jenkins, Jenkins was President in 1971,” Jane commented. “but sometime later the classes ceased to feature.”

As well as exhibiting cattle, which Jane and her Parents showing as Floridale Angus Stud have done for many, many years, Jane has also been the Malvern A & P Show cattle Convenor, as well as being actively involved in the General Show Committee.

“The success of our Show comes from its hard working committee members,” Jane commented. “There are 25

sections that all contribute to our committee and assist with making the day the outstanding success it always is. Added to which we have a great tradition of amazing morning teas at the pre-show working bees another great reason to participate,” Jane added with a laugh. “We’d love to attract some extra help at these working bees too - if the morning tea isn’t a big enough attraction, the feeling of accomplishment, being part of the community and lending a hand where it’s appreciated, is a wonderful feeling. I truly believe that we all must have a sense of community and ownership of our Show and with so many competing events, we really should keep the tradition alive.”

Featuring some brilliantly talented local artists and groups such as Emma Sparey, Sparey Ashy Batchelor, Batchelor Holly Kimber, Kimber Manaia Davies and the Ellesmere Pipe Band all ably hosted by the wonderful DJ Singh Star. At 11.45am local Sheffield Primary School pupils will debut in their Sheffield Kapa Haka Group. A wonderful opportunity for showgoers to support their performance.

Children at the Show are well taken care of with an entertainer on site, lolly scramble and city farmyard, as well as all the fun of the sideshows. A Scavenger hunt attached to the flyer given out

at the gate will lead children all around the sections - not only very entertaining, but also with prizes for all complete entries.

Something very special in the Produce Shed and well worth checking out, is Margaret Johnston's knitted cast of Downton Abby as mice.

‘Mouseton Abby’ contains seventeen individual creations.

“Also check out the Art in the back shed - it is created by children at seven local schools and there are some exceptional budding artists on display,” commented Malvern A & P Association secretary Rebecca Stewart.

While I always look forward to the Malvern Show, I also know that unfortunately it means that summer and the A & P Show season are coming to an end.

Unlike some other parts of the country, Canterbury has had a dry summer so I am sure that many are hoping for some autumn rain - just not on Show Day itself of course!

It is always great for me as a woman to see other women getting involved in our A & P Shows at the highest levels.

That is the case for the 118th Malvern Show this year with both a female President, Jane

President in the Malvern Show’s history.

The theme of this year’s show is ‘Tradition’, which I think is very appropriate as A & P Shows have been a highlight of the year for our rural communities right from the earliest days of farming in the Malvern Hills and on the Plains.

While many of the show’s categories remain the same from year to year, new traditions also arise. It is great to see local schools getting involved with performances by the Sheffield Primary School Kapa Haka group, for example.

I am really looking forward to going to the Malvern Show this year. It's a cool, community day out and a chance for exhibitors to show off their skills and efforts from over the summer.

There's something for the whole family. When I was at primary school I remember enjoying preparing crafts and exhibitions at school and then seeing the animals and going on rides. At high school it was

about seeing friends and multi flavoured slushies. Now as an adult I enjoy bumping into people and catching up on life, I enjoy seeing the variety that Selwyn now offers and particularly like the sock stall and the dogs’ high jump.

If you've never been, make this year your first. I look forward to bumping into you at the show.

The Malvern A & P Show at Sheffield is a real community affair and this year’s President Jane Jenkins is all about keeping it that way. So much so that she

has ninety entries in her favourite section - cattle; of which she is also the convenor.

From the organisation to the exhibiting, the Show puts on a

display that can’t be bettered and is entrenched in the local, rural community. But while agriculture and stock are the mainstays of the event, the

committee has worked, planned and organised, so that the event presents a variety of entertainment, trade sites, food stalls, the ever popular fun-fair, and stalls selling all and everything a Showgoer could want. Organisers recognise that folk come to the Show looking forward to a fun day out and they well and truly cater to this.

For those showing animals or produce the event runs like a well oiled wheel - years of experience while still embracing changing times, means that although the theme of this year’s show is ‘Tradition’ - it is a nostalgic view of bygone days, rather than a return to Shows of the past.

An outstanding list of trade sites have been attracted to the event and those, along with spectator highlights such as the terrier racing, dog high-jump and equestrian events, will keep even the most choosy spectator entertained. And remember to be at the Main Ring around

2:30pm for the Grand Parade, which is always spectacular viewing.

Be sure to catch the speed shearing, wood chopping, barrel racing, sheep, cows and alpacas, as well as the amazing displays in the produce shed showing just how talented the district is.

Always a winner for spectators, this year the Speedshearers will kick off with a relay against the Woodchoppers!

Entry for adults is only $10 (where can you go for that nowadays?) and children (under 16) are free and there’s no charge for car parking.

While all eyes will be on the weather forecast in the week leading up to the Show, the event goes ahead rain or shine and it’s an awesome opportunity to enjoy what the committee have laid on, while catching up with friends and neighbours.

‘Dogs in Show’ is a chance to show off the family pet, whether it’s the beloved crossbreed or the haughty purebred.

With Malvern A & P Show attracting an average of 25-30 entrants in the canine classes, it’s a definite sign of just how popular ’man’s best friend’ is.

Showgoers enjoy the ringside entertainment as doggies with their owners circle for judging.

“While some dogs have other ideas about the necessity for this, most are well-behaved,” said section convenor Leanne Winter.

“These classes are open to all dogs - crossbred and pedigree.

All you need to be able to do is run your dog in a circle around the ring,” Leanne added. “I think people are mistakenly under the impression their dog has to be groomed to perfection and be able to move like the show dogs; this definitely isn’t the case.”

The judging is followed by a ‘best dressed’ class.

“This is well worth watching just to see the family pet in their finest, with some of the outfits being very, very, entertaining,” Leanne smiled.

While we are fortunate to have a good number of repeat entrants, and word of mouth always assists with this, it would be great to attract some younger entrants from Malvern’s primary schools as well. I think in a rural area we should be able to boost our entry numbers a bit. I also organise the judge and check entries to ensure everyone is in their correct classes.

2 - On the day what are your duties? Do you have assistance?

On the day I set up the ring for judging which starts at 11am and I work as a steward to get competitors to the ring entrance for their class. I also hand out the prizes on the day and I am usually fortunate to have my son and a friend of his helping me.

3 - Following Show Day and prior to it are you involved in working bees and clean-ups, set-ups?

Prior to Show day we have working bees, which depending on my work commitments, I attend. I try to help with setting up for other sections also if they are short on people power.

Following the Show it’s all hands on deck for the big clean-up.

4 - What do you see as the future of the A & P Show - in general and this one in particular?

I would hope that the Show will carry on going, and go from strength to strength. However the lack of younger folk making themselves available for the committee may jeopardise this.

I do hope we can attract some new committee members sooner rather than later and preferably in time for next year’s Show.

Ray Holliday worked on and managed several high country farms for many years and over that time detected a lowering in the ability of shepherds to appraise young replacement stock.

“I had the good fortune to have several very capable shepherds and stock managers but by and large they lacked the skills necessary to appraise stock,” Ray commented.

After moving back into the district a chance conversation resulted in Ray being put in charge of a ‘new’ section at the show ‘stock judging’. This is now the third year of this resurrected class, with Ray at the helm. However Ray’s first association with the Show goes way back to the early 1960’s and both he and his family have a long association with the event.

“My role,” Ray added, “is to oversee the Show’s stock judging competition where young shepherds, and old, are encouraged to test their skills against an experienced appraiser.

“This year we are hoping to have four fine wool sheep, four mid micron sheep and four strong wool sheep. The sheep have been kindly donated for the day by local farmers. The appraiser will go over the sheep on the morning of the Show and rank the sheep in order of best to worst - considering the

overall attributes of each sheep, within each breed.

Competitors (who can enter on the day) are then encouraged to appraise the sheep themselves and rank them. The competition winner is the one who is closet overall to the appraiser. We apply the Young Farmers’ Association stock judging system to calculate the eventual winners. For this year’s Show we there will be three sections, School Age, Young Farmers, (up to 30 years) and Open.

“On the day I am responsible for ensuring all the sheep are in place, before overseeing and collating entries which come in on the day. Usually the appraiser will look at and rank the sheep then come back at a later time to double check and confirm the results, ready for announcing them at about 3pm.”

When the News asked Ray what he thought the future of A & P Shows was, both here in Malvern and further afield, he pondered somewhat, commenting it was a difficult question to answer.

“The nature of farming has changed dramatically even in the last twenty years, bigger machinery, less staff per stock unit carried and the ever present reality of the rise and rise of dairying. Farming dynamics have changed. Add to that a change in the rural/urban

population; the ever increasing number of urban folk moving to places like Kirwee, Darfield and even Springfield, then commuting daily to Christchurch for work. The change in population dynamics affects greatly what people want to see at an A & P Show. The number of craft stalls for example has multiplied exponentially and the number of stock entries and trade stands significantly reduced. A & P Shows have adapted remarkably well and even though the emphasis has shifted slightly away from the traditional sheep and cattle etc they still play a vital role in bridging the gap between the urban and rural people; in fact maybe even more so now with the changes in the population than ever before.”

2017 will be the 28th year that Elly May has been the convenor of the Horse section at the Malvern A & P Show. She also told the News that after 28 years it’s time to hang up her hat and hand the reins (pardon the pun) of the section to someone else.

Elly May commented: “During my 28 years at the helm of the Horse section I have seen many changes. When I started all those years ago there were only two sections in the Horse ring, three sections in the Pony ring, plus Harness and Led stock. The sections have evolved over that time to encompass the changes in the Royal Agricultural Society classes and sections which now offer competition to a wider variety of equestrian pursuits.

Now we have four sections in the Horse ring and four sections in the Pony ring, plus three Horse Breed sections, along with a section for our younger competitors, as well as

the harness and led stock sections.

“For many years, as well as running the ring, I competed in the Harness section. I got the ‘harness bug’ from my Uncle Harry and have been privileged to have some great ponies that I have enjoyed showing throughout the years.

“The Main ring has grown slightly in size, but we have to manage and move the rings around to accommodate the busy programme. The jumping classes that we offer have not changed over the 28 years I’ve been involved, but the type of fences and construction of them, has.

“As convenor my role doesn’t alter much from year to year.

The schedule has to be revised and any R.A.S and Breed Society changes made. Judges have to be selected and approached, plus sponsors revisited and new ones contacted. A month out, stewards also need to be got in

touch with. The week prior to the Show all rings need to be set up, ring boxes made up, ribbons, score sheets and prize money for each individual section also need to be set up.

Rings have to be laid out in accordance with the number of entries received. For many years the horse rings were set up around the cattle ring, but last year the cattle ring moved into the vacant bowling green area, which gave us more space for our growing equestrian entries. The cattle ring will stay in their new location, which was well received, by not only horse and cattle competitors, but also the public who enjoyed the new location.

“Over my years of involvement there have been a couple of notable highlights for me. In 2006 I was the very first woman president of the Malvern A & P Association. 2006 was a very difficult year for me as my husband of forty years passed away. Warwick was very proud

“One of my innovations has been the introduction of a Past President’s Medal. We awarded every living past President, who was present on Show day, with their medal and this tradition has continued annually at each Annual General Meeting.

“My other highlight was the presentation of a Royal Agricultural Society Excellence medal in 2010. This was a

complete surprise to me and I felt extremely honoured. Royal Agricultural Society Excellence medals are awarded for dedication and commitment to the showing movement in New Zealand and I was blown away to receive recognition for something I have enjoyed doing.

“The Malvern A & P Association along with the Courtenay A & P Association give our area a day to be proud of,” Elly concluded.

Once again Darfield Preschool will have their child friendly tent available at the Malvern A & P Show, offering Mums and Dads a place to bring their little ones to rest during the day.

As a community based ECE Centre we appreciate being able to make the most of our community and ensure we are actively involved in the many district initiatives and events, one of which is the Sheffield Show coming up.

We continue to offer our tamariki/children an exciting curriculum, with science holding a strong interest with the children recently. For young children science is finding out about the everyday world that surrounds them. Science is an integral aspect in children’s learning and we look forward to showcasing their involvement at the Sheffield Show.

Our amazing team of teachers have supported this interest by

researching and offering a plethora of exciting active hands -on learning experiences, providing meaningful and relevant learning for the children. Through exploration and discussion, the tamariki are learning that science is part of their lives and it's a lot of fun!

The three and four year old children have begun producing some really artistic artwork that

will be entered into the art competition at the Show and displayed for everyone to see.

For anyone who hasn’t viewed the flower exhibits at the Malvern A & P Show - it’s something that really shouldn’t be missed. This section really is a must to peruse; everything from beautifully created flower decorations to children’s arrangements. A first for this year is the new pumpkin theme that has been introduced.

Flower section convenor Sylvia Townshend has answered a few questions from the Malvern News on what being a convenor in this section entails:

1- As Flower section convenor what is your role?

Do you do any promotion to attract entries?

My role as section convenor is to make sure the day runs smoothly. We haven’t done a lot of promotion but I think this perhaps should change for future Shows. The number of entrants varies from year to year and the decorative section is always popular. We would love to attract more children and novice entries, and can’t stress enough that you don’t

This year, as mentioned we have introduced a decorated pumpkin as a theme. We do hope to get some new people entering and all that is required is a small pumpkin with a few garden flowers.

Last year Sheffield Garden Club members went to local schools to demonstrate sand saucers.

Sadly it resulted in only a few entries, which was disappointing. We think ‘saucers’ have just gone out of fashion and thus have removed that category this year.

3 - Following Show Day and prior to it are you involved in working bees and clean-ups?

Definitely. Many hands make light work so a few dedicated members (and husbands) help set up and take down the display trestles.

5 - What do you see as the future of the A & P Show - in general and this one in particular?

I think people are reluctant to take part, or consider they are too busy but it is only once a year, and a very enjoyable day.

There is a team of members from the Sheffield Garden Club who help anyone with showing their flowers or arrangements. My role is also helping the judges and working out the points and prizes.

A huge spectator drawcard at any rural show is always the ‘Woodchopping’ section. Skill speed and dexterity, sharp axes swinging and the speed of the race to complete - all add to what is definitely a crowdpleaser.

Convenor for the Malvern A & P Show Woodchopping section is Reuben Carter and the News asked him to elaborate on his role:

For those that haven’t visited the Poultry area of the Show, it’s a wonderful class to view for both those knowledgeable about the birds, as well as for children and families. Make a point of locating the section at the Malvern A & P Show and enjoy what the class has to offer. The Malvern News asked the convenor of the Poultry and Pigeons’ class, Ashley Shadbolt, Shadbolt a few questions about his role and where he saw A & P Shows, now and in the future:

On the day we set up the chopping arena, putting up our dummies (the chopping stands) and the sawing cradles, then arrange the blocks in order. We are usually self sufficient as all involved chip in to help run the day, and clean up the wood chips.

4 - Following Show Day and prior to it are you involved in working bees and clean-ups, set-ups?

Yes we have working bees to get our blocks, usually trees that have been donated by farmers. We cut these down and then cut them into block lengths, we get a special block peeler from the West Coast to peel the blocks down to specific sizes; so that everyone chops the same size blocks. Once the blocks are peeled we load them onto a truck and cart them back to either one of the axemen’s homes, or to our facilities at the Christchurch Showgrounds. We then wrap the blocks with bale wrap to stop them drying out and becoming hard. If the blocks become too hard they can break axes, and a new axe can cost between $400 and $1,200.

5 - What do you see as the future of A & P Show ‘s. - in general and this one in particular?

The future of A & P shows is a familiar debate we have regularly and it comes back to what our audience wants to see. As for woodchopping it’s all about seeing sharp axes, woodchips flying and the excitement of the competition.

Internationally Timbersports series are becoming increasingly popular.

This is where elite axemen from around the world compete for the winner’s title and the prestigious series title. I can see New Zealand woodchopping embracing this style of woodchopping competition in the future.

1 - As Poultry & Pigeons section convenor what is your role? Do you do any promotion to attract entries, or is it usually repeat entrants? How many entrants are there usually?

As convenor of the poultry section it is my role to ensure that the scheduled classes are up to date with poultry trends so that it encourages exhibitors. There’s then the task of organising a judge and setting up the cages for the day, before taking them down after the Show. Promoting the section is generally focussed on existing purebred poultry breeders during the winter poultry show season and we rely on a core of local breeders and previous attendees.

Typically we have around ten people placing entries, with between sixty and ninety birds exhibited on average.

2 - Are there any special features or additional classes in this section this year?

This year a new class for utility poultry has been added.

This is in response to the vast number of people who keep laying hens that aren’t standardised pure breeds; for example shavers or cross breeds, yet wish to exhibit their birds at the Show. Entries will be judged on general wellbeing and constitutional traits that indicate high egg production. This is also a throwback to early Shows where all poultry classes were utility based, so it is interesting how history repeats itself.

3 - On the day what are your duties? Do you have assistance?

As with all convenors my role on the day is organising, troubleshooting and a bit of PR for the section. With regards to assistance - my family are a great help with the setting up and taking down of cages and we have three loyal poultry section sponsors: Keith Taege, Taege Riverview Farms and the Darfield Hotel of which I am very appreciative.

4 - Following Show Day and prior to it are you involved in working bees and clean-ups, set-ups?

Given the need to set up and take down cages for the poultry section I tend to focus on this so I’m often spotted covered in wood shavings below the pavilion, on the lead up to and after the show!

5 - What do you see as the future of the A & P Show - in general and this one in particular?

I think the Show is becoming more and more a display of rural life rather than a day of competition between exhibitors. Because of this I think it’s crucial minor sections such as poultry are continued and supported so visitors to the Show know that they can see a horse, a cow, a sheep, an alpaca and a chicken on the day. A real indicator of this is the popularity of the petting tent where children get to be hands on with young animals, which is a real novelty for many urban children, yet something country folk take for Ashley Shadbolt. granted.

It’s definitely A & P Association dedication when you’ve spent twenty five years on the PA system covering the happenings at the Malvern Show. Melissa Jebson has done just that, but she pronounces herself a definite novice alongside cocommentator Stuart Baxter who has been behind the microphone for nigh on 47 years (not continually!!). The pair follow a line of longevity, as the previous commentator, Mollie Townshend, Townshend undertook the role for forty years.

Melissa was no stranger to commentary before taking to the microphone at the Malvern A & P Show, having previously announced at various Equestrian breed shows and other events - mainly at the old Addington Showgrounds.

“Show day starts for me at 7am in the equestrian area, as I am the official measurer for district competitors, who do not have an annual measuring certificate,” Melissa explained.

“It is great that we can give local district riders the opportunity to compete at their local Show, as that is often the only place, other than Pony Club, that they ride at. I measure until competition starts at 8.30am, and I then join Stuart on the public address system.

“Stuart has already started by this stage, as he gets the Show up and running, announcing the first classes, welcoming everyone and letting visitors know what’s on, and where.

Stuart is based in the caravan situated in the centre of the Main Ring, while I circulate around the Showground

announcing things of interest as I see them. I also interview competitors, guests and tradestall people which often proves to be extremely interesting (and sometimes amusing!). The entertainment is always fun to watch and often exciting to commentate on. Stuart and I run a tag-team approach, where I commentate the Dog High Jump and Stuart gets involved with the Terrier Race.

We both do various parts of the Grand Parade which highlights our prize-winners, plus introduce our President and local Member of Parliament to Show goers.

“I commentate at various Shows throughout the Province.

At the Canterbury Show I commentate the major awards and presentations throughout the three days in the main ring.

While doing this, I have met and worked with some wonderful people, including HRH Princess Ann, HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Cornwall then Prime Minister John Key and Mayor Lianne Dalzell to name but a few.”

Melissa continued: “For many years I have been the roving announcer for a variety of Shows - the Mackenzie Highland Show every Easter Monday, the Oxford, Temuka/ Geraldine, and Courtenay A & P Shows, plus the South Island Premier Show, and recently have announced at the New Zealand Horse of the Year, in Hastings.

With the ‘Roar’ starting in the coming weeks it is a prudent time to discuss firearms safety,” said Senior Constable, Darfield Police, Andy Grant.

“First and foremost,” he said, “every firearms user should be completely familiar with the seven basic rules of the Firearms Code.”

Statistically during the roar this year, somewhere in New Zealand, a hunter will be shot and possibly killed, when out deerstalking in the New Zealand backcountry. This happens because quite simply the person firing the firearm has not adhered to rule four of the Arms Code (identify the target beyond all doubt).

Being the holder of a firearms licence is a privilege, not a right and Police make stringent background enquiries into every firearms licence application, to ascertain that person's suitability as being a fit and proper person to possess one. Firearms Codes are available free of charge from the Darfield Police Station.

“Please remember to obtain permission from landowners before venturing onto private land to hunt,” Andy added.

“If the landowner declines to give you permission, that is his or her right, please respect that.”

Permits for Department of Conservation administered land can be obtained online.

Under the Wild Animal Control Act 1977, the current penalty for hunting on property without the authority of the landowner (Poaching) is $100,000 fine and/or two years

imprisonment.

For young, aspiring hunters in the community there are a few useful tips before heading out in the roar: • Take the time now to sight in the rifle, get to know where the projectile is hitting at different distances.

• It is beneficial to get out into your chosen hunting area now to survey the landscape and get to know the lie of the land, look for stag rubbings and wallow holes and speak to older and more experienced hunters.

• Now is the time to start organising gear (GPS, emergency locator beacon, compass, maps, emergency survival blanket, cigarette lighter, matches, food etc).

Andy’s tip: “I find it’s a good idea to take a piece of car inner tube rubber which will ignite easily if you are caught out for the night, or need to get a fire going fast in wet conditions.”

“Choose your hunting partners wisely and positively identify your target,” further commented Andy.

“When you return from a hunting trip be sure to safely secure your firearm away in a locked gun cabinet, bolt and ammunition locked away separately.

Don’t be like one idiot several years ago when I was working in Southland. This man was out hunting in Fiordland one morning during the roar, he returned home and locked his rifle away. Later that same evening he took his rifle from his safe to clean it in his lounge, as he was cleaning the barrel the rifle fired and he blew his thumb clean off, the projectile proceeding on through this man’s roof in a built up residential area. This man had neglected to unload his rifle, remove the bolt and all ammunition, a lesson foolishly learnt the hard way!

“I and my hunting companions have had some bloody awesome memories hunting over the years.

However over the past three years there have been hunters fatally shot and killed during the roar in New

Zealand.”

“Positively identify your target beyond all doubt.”

“I would urge any deer stalkers getting up around the age of forty or older to make an eye specialist appointment now. Have your eyesight examined and checked before you head out this roar.

“Let’s hope there are no hunting fatalities during this 2017 roar,” Andy concluded.

Selwyn District Council is partnering with SeatSmart to offer a recycling programme for expired or damaged car seats.

Selwyn parents can take their unwanted car seats to the Pines Resource Recovery Park for a small $5 charge. SeatSmart also have collection sites in Christchurch where the usual recycling fee is $10 per seat but until June 2017 Selwyn District Council is offering a collection point at Rolleston and subsidising the processing cost.

SeatSmart can help reduce the amount of recyclable materials going to landfill and remove expired seats from circulation which improves road safety.

The seats are dismantled thr oug h D ep art m en t of Corrections community work programmes which provide opportunities for offenders to learn new skills and contribute to the community. The recovered plastic is recycled into products for the building industry, metal parts are taken to metal recyclers, and the harnesses will be used by Karkt NZ and The Green Collective who make handmade bags from recycled items.

said all car seats have an expiry date on them and over time seats can be damaged from UV light, heat, general wear and tear, or in a crash.

Parents can find information about how to check their seat’s expiry date at: www.seatsmart.co.nz Locally, Selwyn District Council has trained a number of volunteers as child restraint technicians and they can check car seat safety and install seats for free - search '’Selwyn Car Seat Champions' on Facebook for details.

"The SeatSmart recycling programme is a great way for caregivers to dispose of unsafe car seats and know that the seat will be recycled rather than being used after they have expired or have become unfit for use," commented Stephanie.

Nationally, over 40,000 car seats expire every year in New Zealand. If these seats were placed together they would stretch from Darfield to West Melton or Leeston to Lincoln.

Booster and convertible seats can be recycled through the recycling programme, along with capsules, but polystyrene seats are not part of the programme.

“The Council is pleased to be able to partner with SeatSmart to help reduce the amount of car seats going to landfill by recycling them. To help make the programme a success we are asking residents to remove and dispose of the fabric seat covers prior to bringing them in,” said Selwyn District Council Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd.

The Pines Resource Recovery Park is located at 183 Burnham School Road and is open Monday to Fridays, 9am4.30pm, and from 10am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Summit Road Society haven’t been able to assess the full devastation as yet, following the Port Hills fires - but there’s immediate work that can be done.

The Summit Road Society's volunteers have still not been able to access Ohinetahi Reserve to assess the full extent of the damage, but behind the scenes, the Society has been busy assessing the situation and preparing for the enormous programme of restoration ahead.

"Our first task is to define our loss, not only in area and hard assets, but more importantly in biodiversity," said Springfield’s Bill Woods, Woods President of the Summit Road Society. "We have a number of experts ready to advise us on a post fire strategy for the land. We are expecting a range of views and because of the large area involved (80ha) it may be possible to trial several approaches to recovery."

An immediate concern is the stability of the burnt area, as it is very steep in places and climbs 350 metres to the summit of Mt Ada (500m), just to the north of the Sign of the Bellbird. The Regional Council,

City Council and the Summit Road Society are already in discussions about this.

The Society recognises that this event is well beyond their internal resources and are asking for help from the public.

“There are two ways people can help,” Bill commented: Financially:: -This is going to be a very expensive project and a $10 per tree donation will be a great way for people to assist.

and regular weeding of the planted area for three years, or until the plants are established.”

A more immediate requirement is for people to help collect this season’s seed from suitable Port Hills’ plants so that it can be prepared ready for sowing this winter.

“We have already received offers of native plants from gardeners, but because this is a QE2 covenant we are committed to sourcing our plants from a known Port Hill source, otherwise we run the risk of introducing garden hybrids into what is ultimately going to be an indigenous forest. However, we may be asking keen gardeners to help us grow seeds from known trees.”
