The fourth of seven events in the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series, was held in Corsair Bay, not far from Christchurch on Saturday 4th March. The leg consisted of four different swim events, but outstanding local success was achieved in the 'OceanKids' class. This is a swim for children aged between 7-13 years old, consisting of a 200 metre shallow water triangular swim off Corsair Bay, lined with Surf Life Saving NZ guards.

Series has been a catalyst for positive change to thousands of Kiwis by providing them with the motivation to get active and healthy, as they train for their challenge.

Local swimmers Chloe Newbigging (Female 11-12 years and third overall) and Poppy Freeman (7-8 Years old) both achieved first places in this event - a creditable achievement.

Especially as Chloe preceded her win with a swim in the 1,000 metre ’Step it Up’ class in the morning, coming third in her age group and eleventh overall out of 94 swimmers. She was joined in this 1,000 metre event

by Ethan Taylor who, along with Chloe, is also a Darfield High School student. Ethan produced a great result, coming in at fourth overall. Both Chloe and Ethan train at the Waitaha Swim Club.

The win entitles Chloe and Poppy, as winners of their respective classes in the Ocean Swim, to now head away to Auckland and attend the Jetstar Super Swim camp in May. Sam Newbigging, Newbigging the proud Mum of Chloe commented that her daughter definitely deserved her success as she trained hard, rising at 6am to do so, even in the school holidays!

While Annabelle Freeman, Poppy’s also proud, mum said her daughter was very excited about attending the forthcoming swim camp, something her big brother Tom had previously attended after qualifying in an earlier year’s Ocean Swim event Well done to all local competitors that took part in the event.

This year Kirwee Players introduce ‘Kirwee Players’ Kids’ performing The Little Mermaid Jr. The success of the Players’ Oliver last year, highlighted a definite gap in Selwyn for a dedicated children’s theatre group. A group to allow the junior talent of the area to develop their stagecraft, entertain and have fun for years to come.

Auditions for The Little Mermaid Jr. were held in December 2016 and a huge number of children came from all over Selwyn, with 31 youngsters eventually chosen. The group has been rehearsing three times per week and will hit the stage in Kirwee, on April 8th and 9th.

Kirwee Players acknowledges that not only do they need talent from the children on stage, but also behind the scenes and have taken this opportunity to work with a fresh new directing team. Kelsea NelsonNelson-Cummins (Rizzo in Kirwee Players 2015 Grease), Olivia Gibson (Chorus and

Dancer in Kirwee Players 2015 Grease and 2016 Oliver) and Caelan Thomas (Pianist in Kirwee players 2015 Grease and 2016 Oliver) are showing that their youth and enthusiasm is the right formula. Mentored by the Kirwee Players’ regular production team, this allows the Society and the district to build its creative base and get more people involved.

The hope for Kirwee Players is to continue with the formula for years to come and allow as many kids as possible to experience life enriching theatre.

The Little Mermaid, a favourite Disney fairytale about Ariel the Mermaid that wishes to live as a human, will delight children of all ages (and their parents too, of course).

The Canterbury Interschools’ Showjumping Championships were held on Wednesday February, 22nd with sixteen schools represented from across the Province. There were over thirty teams and more than 130 riders competing. Darfield High School sent three teams to the event, and all riders competed to a high standard and attained outstanding individual results.

Team A, Georgia Thompson, Gus Thompson, Georgia Allison and Katherine Hadler were the overall winners of the event by over twenty points and were named ‘Canterbury Interschools’ Champions 2017’.

Georgia Thompson also won an award for her exceptional sportsmanship and fair play.

Gus Thompson and Katherine Hadler both won their Showjumping classes, and Katherine also finished third in her Showhunter round.

Many folk have gone down the main street of Darfield and watched with interest the installation of solar panels on the roof of the new Challenge Service station. These have been installed by Kea Energy, who is a Canterbury based electricity retailer using solar energy to help businesses lower electricity costs and be environmentally friendly.

Kea installed its own solar panels at Darfield Challenge, who agreed to buy the electricity they generate at a discounted price; excess energy is exported and if more energy is required, Kea has back-up supplies. The Darfield Challenge installation has 30kWp of solar panels; and they are using LG 315W panels, and Fronius Inverters.

Markus Lambert of LG explains the site as “one of the highest output panels in NZ in a commercial system”.

The business is the brainchild of Campbell McMath, McMath who worked for Orion on its network management control systems.

“After talking to Sandra and Geoff Hampton, Hampton owners of the Darfield Challenge Service Station, about the concept of a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), they were keen not only for the savings but the reduced carbon foot print of their service station,” Campbell added.

“A Power Purchase Agreement, or as it is known in the industry as - a PPA, is a simple concept.

The customer, Challenge, gets a cheaper rate for all their power day and night, as they purchase it from Kea. “The size we are allows us to be very agile with pricing and plans,” Campbell commented. ”We are constantly reviewing where our company is and how we can make it competitive and economical. We are looking for a balance,” he said.

“Customers needed to know they had options. As we talk to them about our option, they are surprised that there is more than one way of powering businesses. It does become frustrating when the customer looks at the power bill and continues to buy from one particular retailer, because they always have done.”

Campbell said being an ‘outsider’ in the industry was an advantage and allowed Kea Energy to have an open mind, offering personalised service to clients.

“Each one of our customers has a different electricity demand; we match the best system for the customer and

us, to maximise energy savings.

Some require lots of panels, some require a backup system.”

He said it was a great feeling showing customers how much power was coming from the sun and how it was powering their business.

Campbell’s advice is for people to look around. “Things are moving quickly in the industry, in terms of products and services.

“Who would have thought that the power company, us, now takes the power station to you, at not just a cheaper rate, but also at no cost to the customer.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of Campbell’s job was

saving the customer money, getting a return and the bonus of reducing pollution.

Kea Energy also specialises in large MW size solar farms, from turnkey systems, PPA's, subcontracting, pile driving and anything in between.

The company works across the Canterbury region and has been building its assets over eight years.

“If your business has a power bill over $2,000 month, are interested in your business having a cheaper power bill and a lower carbon footprint, then contact Kea for competitive prices,” Campbell concluded.

In May this year, Darfield Hospital will have completed ninety years outstanding service to the local and wider community.

Records show that in 1923 there were 205 births in the district, of which 103 were handled by the resident doctor, with the remainder having to go elsewhere, usually to Christchurch, for delivery.

At the time, an initial request was made to the North Canterbury Hospital Board for a Maternity Hospital with four beds, and two extra rooms to be used for emergency purposes.

The hospital which included a maternity suite and casualty ward surgery, was opened on May 27th,1927 by Mrs McMillan the wife of the then local member of the Hospital Board.

During the first week in operation, it is recorded that three babies were born - Zelda Jenkins, Jenkins Bricky Boulton and Jack Johnson.

Johnson The present Friends of the Hospital, supported by Nurse Manager Leanne Davie and her staff, are planning to hold an Open Afternoon on Sunday, October 29th to celebrate the hospital’s ninety years of distinguished service. There will be an opportunity for the public to take a walk through the hospital and to view the

colourful and immaculately kept grounds. The Friends will run a few stalls to raise some funds for extra items which will enhance the care, comfort and treatment of patients. Their annual Christmas Raffle will also be on sale, afternoon tea will be available and there will be memorabilia on display.

The Friends are presently developing a Facebook Page to provide ongoing information on their activities. The page will also be used for public notices e . g. po st p on e m e nt s o r alterations to events such as the Open Afternoon.

This is the ideal opportunity to note the date on the calendar now.

Selwyn motorcyclists are being offered the opportunity to develop their skills so they can be safer on the road.

Selwyn District Council is offering motorcyclists the opportunity to receive vouchers so they can attend motorcycle skills training for free. Sessions are being held in March and April.

Riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous than driving a car. In New Zealand, the risk of being killed or injured on the road is 21 times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver. From 2012 to 2016 there were 47 motorcycle crashes in Selwyn, resulting in five fatalities, 27 serious injuries and 25 minor injuries.

Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning said the number of motorcycle crashes is concerning and the Council originally offered the ‘Live to Ride’ training in 2013 to try to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Selwyn.

increasing, the number of motorcyclists involved in crashes in Selwyn from 2012 to 2016 has now reduced from 58 in the 2007-2011 period.

The ‘Ride Forever’ training being offered this year provides the opportunity to attend motorcycle skills coaching where people can refresh their skills, and learn and practice new techniques. The courses are delivered by New Zealand Transport Agency-qualified trainers and include training to develop braking, handling and safe driving skills. Course

options are at four different levels – Gold, Silver, Bronze and Urban.

Ngaire said the course offers motorcyclists the opportunity to learn how to assess risks, adopt safer rider positions on the road to increase their visibility to drivers and avoid actions that may cause crashes while riding. "The course provides a hands-on opportunity to learn practical skills that can be applied throughout the rest of your riding life," Ngaire added.

The courses are already highly

subsidised by Ride Forever.

Selwyn District Council has twenty vouchers available for local residents which will cover the remaining $20 or $50 cost usually paid by the motorcyclist. The vouchers are valid until May 31st, 2017.

The TeenAg Competition Series held Saturday, March 4th in Hokitika is a Secondary School showcase in farming, business, and life skills. This was one of s e v e n R e g io n a l F i n a l s, culminating in ultimately the Grand Final in Feilding, to be held July 6th - 8th.

It also fosters personal growth and development amongst competitors, encourages learning by participation and is relevant for all skill levels! The series, which began in 2011, runs alongside the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Regional Finals.

Representing the Tasman Region and taking out first place are DHS Students Brooke McKay and Tom Welch. include competing in teams of two in eight different modules based on all aspects of the agriculture industry. Throughout the series modules will include: animal anatomy, fencing, meat cut ID, gun safety, equine, agronomy, feed budgeting, chainsaw assembly and more.

The event aims to get participants involved and having a go at something they may never have tried before.

The top five teams from the Module Section move on to the ‘Final Face Off’ which involves completing a mixture of tasks and being judged on quality and time factors. Each year the tasks that the competitors are given within the ‘Face Off’ change, and

are generally more physically challenging. This aspect of the competition is an exhilarating pleaser for both the competitors and the crowd.

From there, points are added up and the top three teams are awarded prizes at the end of event Prize Giving. The top two teams from each Regional Final are invited to the Grand Final.

Darfield’s eighteen-year-old Jack Dixon has recently been awarded the Southern Hearing Charitable Trust scholarship to assist him financially as he embarks on his university career.

After receiving a cochlear implant (an electronic ear device which replaces the function of a damaged inner ear) at the age of eleven, Jack has fashioned an impressive leadership, academic and sporting record during his five years as a boarder at St Bede’s College, Christchurch. He was also a School prefect in 2016.

David Kent, Kent Chair of the Southern Hearing Charitable Trust, said that Jack was an outstanding young man and that this scholarship was to assist him during study for a Bachelor of Science degree at Lincoln University.

“Jack wants to become a leader and role model with the cochlear implant and deaf communities, which is an outstanding attribute as he will be able to give advice and potentially assist other teenagers with cochlear implants who are considering

attending tertiary education.

“His ability to relate to them will be important,” said David.

From once having to struggle to be a part of conversations, the cochlear implant has allowed Jack to actively participate in many different areas.

“Being physically active is important to me,” Jack commented. “I love to go running and participate in a variety of sports’ activities. In my last year at school I played for the tennis seniors and was also goalkeeper in the U19 football team,” he added.

His academic record at St Bede’s was compelling. Jack was awarded Academic Honours Pockets in 2014 and 2015 for his achievements in NCEA Level One and Two, while last year in Level Three he received Excellence Endorsement awards for Chemistry, Geography, Religious Education, Earth and Space Science, and 84 Level Three excellence credits.

He also won the NZ Federation for Deaf Children Excellence for a Year 13 student award and was overall winner in all year levels.

“For my science degree I intend to major in Land, Water and Environmental Science which will fit with my deep interest in the environment and sustainability,” Jack said.

As well as his academic and sporting prowess, Jack was active in all aspects of School life. In 2013 he was awarded a NZ Federation for Deaf Children Excellence Award for his commitment and hard-working attitude. He was also a part of the CanTeen fundraising initiative, where teams of pupils ran 125km to raise money for teenagers with cancer.

David concluded by adding that Jack is a thoughtful, reliable and positive young man with a mature attitude, who relates well to people of all ages.

Kelvin Kimber Saturday, March 25th, 2017 marks the 133rd year of racing for the Hororata Racing Club, now ‘Canterbury RacingHororata.’ The Hororata Racing Club was one of the earliest provincial Clubs to be formed following a meeting of twenty six interested people at Hororata in 1884 who organised a Committee to run a race meeting at Hororata in January 1885.

Run under the Canterbury Jockey Club (‘C.J.C.’) rules the meeting was an eight race programme for stakes of one hundred and thirty five sovereigns. The inaugural Hororata Cup was won by Mr T Quill's ’Grand Duke’ and was run for a purse of forty sovereigns.

These early meetings at Hororata did not have full running rails, those were present only in the straight and on the bend to it. The rest of the course was marked with manuka stakes. A running rail for the full course was only installed in the 1920’s.

During the one hundred and thirty one year history of the Club there have only been fifteen Presidents.

Stewart After the first meeting at Hororata the railway’s manager was approached and he offered to put on an excursion train at special rates from Christchurch.

This ran to Coalgate and brought both horses and patrons, who then walked the few miles to the course, before

returning to the ‘young’ city, leaving Coalgate at 5:30pm.

A "Ladies Bracelet" race was run at the very first meeting, and this was revived at the Centennial meeting in 1984. For that year, and every year since, Petersen’s Jewellers have kindly donated a gold bracelet for a race, which is usually for two or three year olds. This year will be the 34th bracelet and is attached to the race for twoyear-olds; there have been thirty-three proud and happy winners! Should the winner be owned by a modern trend of racing syndicates there is intense competition amongst syndicate members as to who gets to wear the bracelet.

Hororata raced on its own course for the first eighty years, when because of the requirement for extensive course improvements, and encouragement from the Racing Conference for centralisation, the Club arranged to rent the Riccarton Racecourse for its future meetings. The first meeting to be held on the new venue was in 1965.

For the next 21 years Hororata retained its own Secretary, and independence, paying a rental fee to the C.J.C. for each meeting run. By this time there were two meetings each year and on one occasion three, which struck a very wet day and proved to be quite serious on the finances.

In 1986 on the retirement of the Secretary, discussions were held with Dr J M Louisson the Chairman of the C.J.C. and his Committee, and it was decided to operate from the Riccarton headquarters and engage the C.J.C. as the secretariat for the Hororata Club.

This race has been upgraded to a Group Three event making it the most important race in the history of Hororata racing and one of the most prestigious eighty five races in the country.

In January Tara Marshall principal of local dance studio TM Dance World and teacher Robyn Cutler travelled to Brisbane to attend a full two day course to train and register as certified teachers of Acrobatic Arts.

“We were taught exercises and drills to increase our strength,

flexibility and endurance,” Tara commented, “and we gained skills through practical hands on learning with dancers of all ages and abilities.”

Acrobatic Arts is taught world wide but TM Dance World are the first studio in New Zealand to introduce this amazing syllabus. The Studio offers four

classes this year from preschool students, through to senior dancers.

“All our students seem to thoroughly enjoy the concept of Acrobatics combined with dance,” Tara said. “Acrobatic Arts is a professiona l curriculum.”

The programme is designed to promote excellence in flexibility, strength, balance, limbering, tumbling, basic contortion and partner/group stunting.

“The syllabus is especially for dancers to learn acrobatics, so we love having it mixed in with all our other dance classes!

Our students will sit examinations each year, just as we do in dance class and we are going to be lucky enough to have examiners travel from Canada to check just what we have been up to, too!”

Rochelle’s Story Rochelle is a young woman who certainly makes the most of all of the opportunities that come her way.

On leaving school Rochelle had a number of work experience jobs that she would go to on various days through the week.

One of these was at Darfield Bakery and over time Rochelle was offered paid work there two days a week. This has now grown to three days a week.

Rochelle loves her job, she says it’s fun, she likes the people she works with, being part of the team and of course getting paid is always good. Rochelle is saving some of her earnings and hopes to spend some of the money on herself.

Along with this, Rochelle is a Global Messenger for Special Olympics. She has been to two workshops in this role and on a day to day basis being a Global Messenger means that Rochelle works at being a good role model for Special Olympics’
