A beautiful day and a relaxed courtyard set the scene for a wonderful afternoon of acoustic sounds at the Hororata Village Bar and Café last Sunday, February 19th. Local talent Ashy Batchelor, Batchelor along with seventeen year old Holly Kimber and owner operator of the Cafe Jarnia Kupe, Kupe presented a musical treat for all those who attended.

Jarnia, accompanied by Riki Barnett on the Cajon Drum, began the musical segment with acoustic covers performing everything from the Eagles, through to Rod Stewart.

Stewart Next up was Ashy, who debuted singing at the Café when she was only fourteen years old! Now eighteen years old, her talent has broadened and increased to such a level that she captures her audience and wows them with her acoustic harmonies.

As the crowd numbers grew and customers sat and enjoyed the music, guest artist Abbey McKenzie, McKenzie owner of Melodies Preschool in Lincoln, wowed them with her angelic voice and guitar playing.

“It was lovely to have a variety of artists, with such talent, from our Selwyn area. Those who travelled from Christchurch today, couldn’t speak highly enough of the wonderful place they had arrived at to enjoy their Sunday afternoon,” Jarnia added.

To the Editors: An Oak tree, which I planted some ten years ago, in the embankment on Darfield Recreation land was destroyed by someone, during last weekend.

To the Editors: It is very disappointing to see the amount of vandalism happening around Darfield at the moment. On numerous occasions I have gone for a walk on a Saturday or Sunday morning and come across real estate signs ripped out, tree branches broken off, empty bottles and lots of rubbish lying all over the place. It is just not necessary! I assume it is just people trying to amuse themselves on their walk home. These people need to start having respect for public property and grow up!

With an ever-increasing number of people heading overseas during the northern hemisphere winter, Gnomes Alpine Sports are as busy as ever during the summer months supplying new ski equipment to lucky, avid skiers heading away. So much so that their store and workshop now focusses twelve months of the year on what, until relatively recently, had largely just been their winter trade. And so after much discussion and number

crunching, store owners Leith and Ally Kerr have decided to do what they do best and make this the last season the store will stock a summer, casual clothing, range. They will continue to be open twelve months of the year but concentrate on what they do best - skiing; and everything associated with it.

brainer to concentrate on this market and develop it further.”

AOer successfully passing her City and Guilds and Chef qualifica ons at Polytechnic in Cromwell, and with two parents both successfully self-employed, Darfield’s Maxine Counsell was well qualified to embark upon a business of her own. She moved to Darfield over two years ago with her sons Kash and Jake to be closer to her family, Jo and Geoff, who also live and work in the area.

Ini ally Maxine was employed in her father’s contrac ng company, but following a s nt chef-ing and then in a Canterbury takeaway business, she had a hankering to start up something similar in her new hometown. The experience gained at Supreme Takeaways gave her the skills and knowledge necessary to undertake a new business of her own and The Cave, on Darfield’s main street is the result.

My name is Rachael Phillipson and I am the Head Girl at Darfield High School for 2017. I grew up in the West Melton and Aylesbury areas and loved my rural upbringing that kept me constantly busy in the outdoors. I have a passion for sport and the natural environment, with a competitive streak and eagerness to learn, so enjoy pushing myself through new challenges. DHS has presented me with many opportunities that foster my sporting interests, but I have most enjoyed the supportive learning environment that has helped me to achieve at my best, realise new interests and learn new skills. I look forward to seeing what the year ahead has in store, and with the help of the prefect team at DHS I aim to implement projects that will help students balance academic and extracurricular activities, a challenge that I have often faced. I would also like to help maintain and evolve the supportive learning environment so that all students can thrive during, and enjoy, their time at DHS. l am excited to work with the school and extended community for the year ahead.

I'm Gus Thomas, Thomas Head Boy of Darfield High School. I have grown up in the Darfield Community, and have spent most of my life in the area. I have a passion for music, culture and sports, and enjoy participating in activities in these areas at Darfield High School. Darfield has helped me to explore these passions, and I have enjoyed many different experiences thanks to the opportunities presented to me. Because of this I would like to encourage students to participate in areas they are passionate about. I would like to try and expand upon Darfield's inclusive culture, and encourage our students to try new things, so that they may develop new passions and new life skills. The Hororata Parish is again running their fun bike/run/walk event this year. The event will be held at Middle Rock Farm on Sunday, March 5th (see advertisement in this issue for further details). The day provides an opportunity for people to access private farm tracks and participate in a range of distances, (from six kilometres to twenty kilometres), offering something for all ages and fitness levels.

“The bike/run/walk event gives folk the opportunity to get off the beaten track with a choice of distance and discipline,” said Hororata Parish Vicar, Jenni Carter.

Carter “Cyclists, runners and walkers all share the track which allows families to go together, with children biking and parents walking/running; if they choose.

Participants can start any time between 10am and 2pm, as long as they are off the track by 4pm. Once on the track people can go around as many times as they like,” Jenni explained.

The tracks are a series of loops and the farther participants travel, the more advanced the tracks. A number of intersections allow for looping back to the start, making it a great day out for groups or families with mixed abilities.

“For those who like to challenge themselves the twenty kilometre track has some great terrain which will provide occasional

excitement, mixed with beautiful scenery. The short tracks still give great views, but are a little easier with only a few climbs and no difficult terrain to navigate,” Jenni added.

Middle Rock Farm is in the Lake Coleridge basin, fifteen minutes from Windwhistle. The 4WD shingle tracks wind their way through the farm and provide breath-taking views overlooking the Rakaia River and into the heart of the Southern Alps.

“We believe the scenery is an unique aspect of this day; many recreational events are in forest or bush and don’t offer the chance to be in the vast wide open country that Middle Rock offers. Our event is also unique in that there is no set start time.

This allows for a stress-free beginning to the day and with its nice wide tracks there’s plenty of room for everyone to enjoy being in this wonderful country,” Jenni commented.

As this event is on private farm land dogs are not permitted.

This is an all-weather event and will run wet or fine.

Selwyn District is arguably the largest repository of Rare Breeds in New Zealand. Tucked up backroads and valleys are breeders of some of the most unique livestock breeds in the world. Many of these are considerably rarer than the rarest of New Zealand’s native species. Ragland Romney

Sheep would be less than thirty animals, with the largest holder living in Selwyn. Similarly with the Waipu Angora goats. One of the only breeders of Tamworth pigs lives in Selwyn, while another breeder holds one of three small herds of Enderby Island cattle, probably the rarest cow in the world. Recently African Four Horned sheep were imported into the district, the only ones in New Zealand, along with Miniature Zebu Cattle.

The co-ordinating body for most of these breeds is the Rare Breeds Conservation Society.

Breeders of livestock, chooks, ducks and geese etc, can all network through the group.

With the support of Xcell Breeding Services the Society also operates a Gene Bank that is a repository for the future, as well as a tool for current breeders to use. One current project is trying to save the last of the Suffolk Punch Horses in New Zealand. There are currently only a mare and a stallion left, and because of their rarity globally, there is much interest in trying to preserve the genetics of the breed if possible. On Sunday, March 12th, the Society will be conducting its annual fund raising auction held at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve.

Over the years this has become an icon event, with people attending from all over New Zealand. It is the only auction of its type held, and as such is an unique opportunity to purchase, or get advice on, some of the less common breeds of livestock. Some people prefer these Heritage Breeds because they are contributing to a conservation cause; others see them as having traits that are sought after for developing markets and future farming trends.

The Auction begins at midday with Livestock, followed at 1pm by chooks, ducks, geese, pheasants, turkeys and a host of other bits and pieces.

It is typically a large auction finishing at around 3:30pm.

It is a family day out, with food, stalls, and other entertainment.

2017 is in full swing at Darfield Preschool and Nursery! The children and teachers are getting to know a number of new friends who have been recently welcomed into the Preschool family. With fine weather and both new and old friends, there is always something fun to experience and explore.

In the Nursery, the older toddlers have been demonstrating their kind and generous natures by looking after the infants and showing new friends all there is to see and do in their spacious, natural environment. At Darfield Preschool and Nursery, children are encouraged to learn alongside, and from, each other, regardless of age. All children benefit from either the knowledge and experience of

older children, or by developing patience, curiosity and empathy - required by interaction with the younger ones.

No better opportunity was to be had when the Teachers set up a group painting session outside in the garden. Children of all ages joined in together, to slip and slide through the different paint colours and produce some wonderful pieces of art work. By participating in creative art and messy play, the children enjoy an open ended resource which supports motor skill development, imagination and creativity, develop empathetic relationship skills and strategies such as sharing space and equipment, and are introduced to early forms of scientific experimentation. The clean-up process afterwards was also a team collaboration!

West Melton Bowling Club News: There were a number of successes for West Melton bowlers at a number of levels over the last month, including Bob Shorter and Ali Gardiner selection for the Canterbury Country Development Men’s and Women’s teams. Playing in their divisions against Town at Methven, they helped Country come away with a five games to four, win.

The Malvern Women’s Singles were played on January 29th and a very good effort by Mary Burke and Brenda Dunlop saw them come second and third respectively. In the Malvern Men’s Pairs (played over two days at Darfield and Kirwee), Bob Shorter and Jeff Mugford finished runners-up to Grant Evans and Sean Thomson from Oxford, while Brian Hecker and Allan Sadler from West Melton were placed third. On February 19th, after qualifying for post section play in the Malvern Men’s Junior Singles, Keith McMeeking went on to defend

the title he won last year. “Well done Keith,” commented a Club spokesperson.

“Congratulations also to Graham Hessey, Hessey Al Douglas, Douglas Mike Burke and Bob Shorter(s) Shorter who went through the two day competition undefeated to win the Men’s Club Championship Fours and to Gretta Leigh who won the La di es’ C lub Championship Singles. Gretta is proving hard to beat as she has won the Championship four times over the last five years.”

On February 18th the Club Mixed Pairs was played and where Vonnie Clark and Bill Wilson, who had three wins, were presented with the Pearce Trophy. “Well done Vonnie and Bill.”

West Melton Social Bowls had an excellent start to the season on February 9th with sixteen teams taking part. The Tigers posted a good score to come out on top, and with all teams playing well the competition looks set to be a good one.

A two-year long trial to centralise the co-ordination and dispatch of national air ambulance helicopter services is now underway.

The trial, funded by the Ministry of Health and ACC to the tune of $591,000. a year, is the result of collaboration between St John, Wellington Free Ambulance and the Air Rescue Group.

The service is based in the Auckland Clinical Control Centre and takes the form of an Air Desk staffed by two Clinical Support Officers (CSOs) fifteen hours a day, seven days a week.

Windows are the one of the first points of entry for spiders, through the weep holes and gaps around the frames. When we spray the inside of a house you must be out of the house for three to four hours and the house must be prepared. We do a walk around and check every house, before we treat it.

We do not spray inside with a back pack garden sprayer! We use an electric machine that puts the product on at around about the same fineness as aerosol canned fly spray. Once the product is dry it is safe (that's why you have to be out three to four hours). Our spray will protect your home from whitetails, flies, all spiders, fleas and silver fish.

Norma said the trial was significant and cited recent multiple trauma incidents like the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes - where the only access to and from the town was by air or sea - and the December 24 2016 bus crash near Wairoa, as situations where the Air Desk would have provided more efficient services to those in need.

It was at a miniature golf course on a brutally hot day when I saw a father with 3 kids.
