BNZ Crusaders -50 Pulse Energy Highlanders - 31 The superlatives flowed thick and fast for the outstanding job Darfield Rugby Club members and community volunteers made of the Darfield Recreation Reserve’s transformation for last Saturday’s Farmlands Cup, Crusaders versus Highlanders.

While the score went the way the majority of those attending

hoped - there was more than a smattering of blue Highlanders supporters who also thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were more than impressed with the facilities provided by the Darfield Rugby Club.

The game was a sell-out attracting 5,500 people to the grounds, the weather was warm and much praise could be heard throughout.

“The support received from the community and local businesses was outstanding and went a long way toward making the event the success it was,” said Darfield Rugby Club President, James Scollay.

Scollay “I can’t thank Jeff Strowger and his grounds’ crew enough for getting the field up to the standard we saw it at. As a matter of fact Ryan Crotty said it was in better shape than AMI!” James laughed.

“Community spirit and support is definitely alive and well,” James enthused, “with people who have no connection to the Club putting up their hand to help set up the event and also join-in with the DRFC volunteer Army on the day to help park cars, marshall guests, cook and sell food and beverages etc.”

Organisers thank the Malvern Lions for their assistance with food, the local community for bearing with them while part of the Domain was fenced off to allow work to be undertaken, and of course Farmlands Cooperative and the Crusaders.

The game definitely put Darfield on the map and it will be something to be talked about for years to come. All credit to the Darfield Rugby Club committee who worked tirelessly to bring the event to fruition.

“It was an awesome day that went off without a glitch,” James added, “and it was great to see the big guns running around the DRFC number 1 field. It was capped off by the fact that the Prime Minister - Bill English was there (along with our local MP Amy Adams, Adams as well as Gerry Brownlee) Brownlee and everyone young and old was allowed on to the field after the game to meet the stars and get signatures. Bill English stayed on the field for about an hour and a half after the game chatting to everyone and he also autographed kids’

The sun shone and the crowds came, to the Darfield Recreation Reserve for the Waitangi Day Community Country Picnic on February 6th. Organised by the Two Rivers Community Trust the event was a wonderful way of celebrating everything about

being a New Zealander in a small rural community.

Families and children enjoyed the array of activities on offer everything from Pedalmania and bouncy castles to pony rides and a petting zoo. There was also face-painting, lots of

games, plus local storyteller and puppeteer Liz Weir.

Unfortunately there was an error in the media release received by Malvern News in regard to the Ultra Fast Broadband roll out. The release stated that the roll-out of UFB2 in Rakaia would be completed this year. MALCOLM GEORGE BEGG 6 March 1949 - 23 January 2017 After suffering the ravages of bowel and liver cancer for thirteen months Malcolm passed away at his Kirwee home surrounded and loved by his family. He is survived by his wife Adrienne his son Stuart and his daughters Jayne and Sarah.

Sarah Malcolm is described by all those who knew him as ‘a gentleman’ and “when he was diagnosed and told it was inoperable,” said Adrienne, “he vowed he would fight the disease to the end and so he did, with courage and determination.”

As friends and family gathered in his be loved Kirwe e Community Hall to celebrate Malcolm’s life on Friday, January 27th they came to honour a man who not only was involved in a staggering number of community and sporting committees, groups and teams, but who was also remembered for his, ‘quiet dignity’, ‘his respect for others’ and his ‘courage throughout his fight with cancer’.

Eulogies at the service came from both his family and those that had had a long and enjoyable friendship with him over many decades.

John Maunsell of the Avon Hockey Club spoke on behalf of all those who had played alongside, or in opposition to, Malcolm on the hockey field over the years and commented that: “His ability to convert a half opportunity into a goal was magical and in March 2016 we found him heroic as he kept his place in the Canterbury Masters to win his final gold medal as his illness was held at bay.”

Malcolm had represented Canterbury and New Zealand in Masters hockey on numerous occasions, as well as being a committed, successful Club player and enjoying the camaraderie of tournaments away, or at home.

“Malcolm’s achievements within his age group meant he became an almost 'must have' for New Zealand team selection, and he has left a special memory with each of us.”

Sport and fitness were part of Malcolm’s life and he played golf from 1964-1980 (along with a 5 handicap and the

Greendale Golf Club Captaincy for a time), Squash (Malvern Squash Champion - 1979, 80, 81, 85 and runner up in 1986) and he also displayed some pretty sharp water skiing skills (as his family can attest), but one of his great loves, and where he met love, was tennis.

President of the Kirwee Tennis Club, Dave Ashton spoke about Malcolm’s love of the game; fifty years on the Club’s committee; and ‘the doubles pair’ that was forming at around that time also. “The Club’s AGM minutes recorded that; ‘The President (then Murray Wilson) Wilson wished to congratulate the secretary and the Club captain on their recent engagement’. And so the match -up of Malcolm and Adrienne was complete, and recorded in the Club history forever.”

Also speaking at the funeral was long time friend David Stott, who grew up on a neighbouring farm and boarded at the same High School - he also spoke about Malcolm’s tennis playing, “although he was a great player he would never humiliate you on the court and I learnt a lot”.

As well as tennis, David also played hockey alongside Malcolm and was involved on the same Kirwee Hall Committee as him too.

“Malcolm was elected Chairman of the Kirwee Hall Rebuilding Committee. He guided this committee from the first meetings to the opening of the building by the Prime Minister in August 1999 - debt free.”

Malcolm also served for many years on the Kirwee Reserve Board as well his involvement on the Kirwee Model School Centennial Committee.

“In 1977 Malcom and I were talked into being in the chorus for a Kirwee players ‘one-off’

“Malcolm’s talent shone and he went on to undertake many Kirwee Players’ roles over the next 35 years. He was a mentor and inspiration to many, both young and old.”

Malcolm joined the Kirwee Players committee in 1979 (President 2000-2013) and became Production Manager in 1982 - continuing both roles until his death.

“Malcolm was always the first to practice, to warm the hall up, and the last to leave and lockup,” David said.

In 2016 Malcolm was awarded a Merit Award by Music Theatre New Zealand for forty years of Services to Theatre.

Malcolm’s family spoke at the funeral of the immense pride they felt at hearing the tributes to a loved husband and father and as well as extending heartfelt thanks to those who had supported them throughout his illness, they also thanked Malcolm for the memories and his unconditional love toward them all.

A text received from a close friend by a family member concisely summed things up with, “Kirwee is less one of their best.”

RIP Malcolm.

The first answer is that it is in the computer companies best interests to make it as easy as possible for you to accomplish the task you have set yourself. The second point is that some mes what is suggested to resolve an issue, is not your logic paHern and you can’t for the life of you see their path for you to proceed. So go to the common denominator, the biggest and easiest solu on that brings together many different views, to enable you to choose the actual one that you understand! Google!

If you Google your ques ons, in .5789764 milli seconds you will have 834,987 answers of which the top 50 will actually have something to do with your ques on, and hopefully an answer that you understand! But…then you realise that the interpreta on Google took from your words was not what you meant at all, so some fine tuning some mes will be needed. Lastly s ck to the core ques on and don’t get side tracked by the other 14 million interes ng things that you see!

Sourcing all her flowers from local Canterbury growers helps maintain a strong bond with the district. If a rose from Waddington finds its way into A Twisted Bunch bouquet, it could be sent anywhere in Canterbury, or anywhere throughout New Zealand! Local deliveries are largely handled by Alanah’s partner Harley Ashwell and the two often make trips into the high country to forage for vegetation. “He has been such an asset to the business, I couldn’t have done it without his support, he’s a huge reason the shop has been a success,” Alanah added.”

After moving to the district in 2012, the two have established a beautiful property, which has also supplied much needed foliage and flora for the shop.

“Mother nature has been a great source of inspiration and of raw materials” Alanah explained. “At home, I can control the product quality and the regrowth. That’s good for the environment and for business.”

Passionate local gardeners have also contributed to the good fortunes of the shop, by growing and giving. A Twisted Bunch

routinely and gratefully accepts offerings from local gardeners and uses the donations in a variety of ways, including flower arranging classes for special interest groups.

Alanah wishes to thank her parents for their support and assistance, her customers for their continued patronage and her local suppliers and growers for their dedication and allegiance.

Plans for 2017 include several wreath making workshops for Easter and Christmas and continuing to be a visual presence in local businesses through her floral displays.

In anticipation of a busy Valentine’s week, extra flowers have been pre-ordered and hours of operation will be increased to meet the demand.

“I have lots of flowers, gifts and pre-made bouquets, especially roses. I’ve made sure I’ll have a lot of the classic red variety on hand.”

Selwyn’s new Youth Council has been appointed and its members are looking forward to advocating and working on behalf of Selwyn’s young people.

The new Youth Council includes four returning members from the previous Youth Council.

track over a large drain near Coaltrack Road which now also covers and provides protection for an historic brick arch and cobble culvert, typical of when local road and railway lines were first built in the area.

Asset Manager Transportation Andrew Mazey added that the cycleway encourages more recreational cycling while reducing the need for short vehicle trips for those who want to travel differently in the area.

“This project was important as we want to allow local residents to walk and cycle between the two townships more safely on their own path, without having to use the increasingly busy State Highway 77 roadway that passes through each township.”

“One of the main roles for the

pathway is to enable local children to safely walk and ride to Glentunnel School, while a small extension is planned to be constructed this year to take it to the Glentunnel Domain entrance and further improve local connectivity,” he said.

The cycleway and walkway adds to a growing number of tracks being developed in Selwyn as part of Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy which are funded through the Council’s Long Term Plan.

The cycleway/walkway construction contract is now in the maintenance period with some minor works still to be undertaken including sowing new grass and painting pedestrian and cycle symbols on the track.

Darfield’s Charlotte Brett is not just ten years old, but is also an accomplished artist. Her talent has been recognised by Toitoi a quarterly journal of writing and art by New Zealand children aged from five to thirteen (www.toitoi.co.nz).

Charlotte attended Kirwee Model School until December last year and is now at Darfield High School, “She loves to draw and attends art classes with Katrina McGettigan in Rolleston,” explained her mother Gayle.

Gayle Toitoi celebrates the ideas, imaginations and creative spirit of young writers and artists with the publishers believing that contributors work has purpose and deserves a wide audience.

Toitoi publish material with an original and authentic voice that other young people can connect to and be inspired by and that reflects the culture and experiences of life in New Zealand. Their philosophy is to treat young writers and artists with respect, handle their work with care and produce a beautifully designed journal of high quality that reflects how much contributors are valued and admired.

Charlotte was encouraged to submit her work to the journal’s publishers for consideration by her art teacher after seeing some of her completed pieces.

As an applicant to be an illustrator, Charlotte was required to submit two pieces of original artwork for

A large fire cast a pall of smoke over the Selwyn district on Saturday morning (February 4th) following which the Selwyn Gets Ready Team issued this original email:

“The Department of Conservation (DOC) has advised that there is a large wildfire in the Waimakariri Gorge / Avoca Valley area that started overnight.

The fire covers an estimated 600 hectares and is being fought with aircraft as it is too dangerous, at this stage, for ground crews. DOC is managing the fire.”

Newshub reported that: “The fire, between an area known as Staircase and Craigieburn, has torn through 300ha of scrub and alpine forests on public conservation land.

“It's closed KiwiRail's Midland trail line, which runs through the area, affecting TranzAlpine passenger train and freight services.

"A full assessment of damage to the track will be carried out by KiwiRail when the fire is under control and it is safe for staff to access the site.

"Only when that has been done will we be able to comment on when the track will be open again," KiwiRail said.

The badly damaged viaduct is one of the four major viaducts on the Midland Line from Christchurch to Greymouth.

At its peak the fire had crews of up to 25 firefighters and 10

helicopters battling and dampening down hot spots.

For Darfield’s Eloise Dance, Dance the only female Selwyn Rurall Firefighter, and the youngest, the fire in the Broken River area was a hot, fourteen hours of hard work doing what she is trained for. Eloise was helicoptered in to the fire site by non other than Richie McCaw. McCaw Tuesday however saw her return to school - having done her duty and assisted alongside a team of firefighters to get the blaze under control. At the time of going to print the fire was under control but not completely extinguished - forecast rain midweek was predicted to assist.

Christchurch man Tony Bain, Bain who now lives in Wales where he runs an outdoor Adventure Company, has returned to com p et e i n th e 2 0 17 Kathmandu Coast to Coast two day event, commencing Friday February 10th. His goal is to tackle the Waimakariri River on a ‘stand up paddle board’ (SUP) during the event.

Tony is confident he can do a good time down the Waimakariri River, well aware it will take him a lot longer than his ‘World

Bath Tubbing’ 100 metre record of 1 minute and 26 seconds.

“Maybe I might try a bath tub down the river sometime in the future, but for now I’m really looking forward to doing it on a SUP,” commented Tony.

“On a recent trip to New Zealand I completed the length of the Clutha River on a SUP, over four days in the Wild Descent, so I was looking for my next challenge.”

Tony started training for the Kathmandu Coast to Coast while living in Christchurch over twenty years ago but a rugby league injury saw him not able

to run without a great deal of pain for four years. The mountain run rather than the river looms as Tony’s biggest challenge, as he has not done much running in thirty years, “I rode a single speed mountain bike as a guide in Wales for a few years so got pretty strong legs for cycling, but the running is a different story, but I can walk until the cows come home!

My longest training run before Christmas was eighteen kilometres, but I’ve been building up the miles since then so I think I’ll be fine,” Tony finished.
