Local rider Sophie Townsend has just completed a trip of a lifetime to Mexico - having attained some outstanding results on the world equestrian stage.

Riding on borrowed mounts the results gained were dependent on the skill and ability of the riders to get the best out of their unknown horses.

Sophie had commented before her departure that she hoped to do well in the (FEI Children’s International Classics) class and her results against riders from throughout the world - were amazing.

Sophie’s mother Maria reported: “Day one consisted of the drawing of the horses for the 32 riders, who hailed from all over the world. Sophie drew a horse named Conchita, owned by a local Mexican rider, who was also competing. Later that afternoon riders took part in a training session, before the warm-up round, held the following day.

“The first day of qualifying saw Sophie and Conchita finishing in second place after producing a very efficient speed round.

The high local level of excitement is almost tangible and the Darfield Rugby Club’s grounds are not only readied, but have had extensive infrastructure additions to accommodate this Saturday’s, Crusaders - Highlanders game.

Playing for the uniquely designed Farmlands Cup the teams will take to the field at 5pm.

A number of local children were successful in their bids to be part of the action and they have been appointed as ball boys.

Blake McInerney, McInerney Louis Ridgen, Ridgen James Reid, Reid Todd Thomas, Thomas Samuel Stewart, Stewart Johnny Rogers, Rogers Mitchell Calcott, Calcott Riley Mcnae and Ben Smith have all been named in this capacity.

background. The Merino horns have links to both the Highlanders and Crusaders, being sourced from a farm owned by Central Otago Farmlands shareholder Robbie Gibson and installed on to the cup by Canterbury sign-writer Paul Walters.

Walters Farmlands sponsorship of this event is the Co-operatives’ way of supporting the return of professional rugby to grassroots level, while also delivering an unique event to Darfield’s rural community.

Farmlands, like rugby, relies on grassroots support for its success. The Highlanders and Crusaders are playing for the ‘pride of grassroots rugby’, so it is fitting that two teams near the pinnacle of the sport will compete for this recognition.

“The Farmlands Cup is about

community - especially the rural community,” commented a Farmlands spokesperson. “The game will have local ball boys and girls and kids can run out onto the field at the end of the game - just like the good old days,” they concluded.

On Wednesday, January 25th countless local children besieged the local Darfield Farmlands for the opportunity of meeting some of the Crusaders, who were on their regional roadtrip, while also getting an autograph or two.

This saw Sophie as the top placed foreign rider over the two qualifying rounds, and progressed her through to the final round.

“An enjoyable day off sight seeing round the city of Tequila was a good relaxant before the final round started. This proved to be both a very challenging course and with challenging time allowed. Once again Sophie proved to the world that she deserved to be there. She produced a stunning clear round, but unfortunately crossed the finish flags .53 of a second over the time allowed, leaving her with one time fault; her only fault over the three days of competition. However this saw Sophie in a creditable sixth place overall in the competition, as well as later being awarded the Style prize for the best rider in the competition as decided by the FEI Committee.

“It has been an incredible opportunity and experience, and one which Sophie will value for the rest of her life,” Maria concluded.

Sophie will now return home and continue training for the New Zealand Horse of the Year Show in Hastings, commencing in early March.

23 year old Kirwee man Aaron Fletcher--van Vugt joined the Fletcher Navy last year as ‘Ordinary Stores Accountant (OSA)’ with ‘a strong desire to travel and live a life less ordinary’.

Aaron has started his career in the Royal New Zealand Navy, by taking out the Academic Prize at his graduation parade held at the Devonport Naval Base at the end of last year. Alongside 42 other new sailors, he celebrated the completion of eighteen weeks Intense Basic Common Training.

This training introduces Navy recruits to all aspects of naval life, and moulds them into capable, self-reliant sailors.

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has contracted Agstaff and Federated Farmers to manage the Kaikoura earthquake skilled workers initiative. Farmers who need labour assistance with repairs, as a result of November’s seismic event, can call 0800 FARMING (327 646) to be matched with skilled workers and volunteers. The lines have been inundated with offers from volunteers and Agstaff is now looking to source skilled farm workers to help progress the project into the recovery phase.

While Kaikoura-area farmers are known to be outstanding in their field - they require skilled assistance to get back on track after the earthquakes in their area. for this project has been amazing and we are still taking registrations of interest via 0800 FARMING. However, as we move further into the recovery phase, we require experienced workers for the more technical jobs: fencing, dairy, and water reticulation to name but a few,” said Agstaff Project Manager, Trina Moore.

Agstaff will oversee and organise worker health and safety inductions and training, establish contracts to reflect current industry rates, coordinate travel to the site, and reimburse some costs to volunteers.

The initiative is funded by the government through the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), Federated Farmers, and Agstaff.

The initiative will run for the next four months, or until all funds are completely exhausted. The 0800 FARMING number is managed by Federated Farmers and is the first point of contact for farmers seeking to register their needs and for volunteers and skilled workers to register their interest.

This centralised resource has been active since the November earthquake and is critical to matching farmers’ needs with the best skilled workers, or volunteers, for the job.

All calls for assistance are open to members and non-members of Federated Farmers and are answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Selwyn Libraries’ Summer Holiday Programme proved to be a hit with children attending various events across the district. On Friday, January 20th, Darfield Library played host to MakerSpace #TheFlock with twelve children attending the event. #The Flock NZ is an awareness campaign for endangered Canterbury shore and river birds. The children watched a video about local endangered birds before painting and decorating life size cut outs of these birds to display around the district. #The Flock programme was also held at all other Selwyn Libraries and was one of twelve sessions for children held during the school holidays which around 150 juniors attended.

Author Maria Gill also visited local libraries (Darfield Tuesday, January 24th) to run a series of workshops as part of the Summer Holiday Programme. Children attending the workshop acted out a story with native bird and predator puppets, wrote stories about endangered animals, learnt how to draw native birds and looked at ways to help the environment and its wildlife. Maria is an award winning New Zealand author of children’s non-fiction.

Prize-winning artist Amelia Guild.

Windwhistle artist Amelia Guild has been awarded top honours in the prestigious Craig’s Aspiring Art Prize. Judges Leigh Melville and Jamie Hanton described her work titled 'Beef Cheeks By Jowl' as, "a highly composed bovine portrait which packed a lot of action into a small space".

The award is the second for Amelia in the past six months after she won the Arts and Culture Award in the 2016 Sensational Selwyn Awards.

Amelia is a multitalented practitioner - working professionally as both a painter and actor (under her married name Dunbar) Dunbar for a number of years, and has been recognised for her achievements in both fields.

Along with theatre and television work in recent years, Amelia’s current acting focus is as one half of touring comedy/ theatre duo ‘The Bitches’ Box’ who are well known to Selwyn audiences. Along with sell out tours and festivals all around New Zealand, The Bitches’ Box have also performed their work internationally, achieving critical acclaim at both the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Matthew Whittle started ‘Recycling Man’, in conjunction with the not-for-profit ‘Charity For Christchurch’, in November 2015, based from his Hillmorten residence.

Matthew will pick up any items, donated for free, from garage sales and house/shed cleanouts. These items are listed for auction on the Recycling Man Facebook page.

But here’s where there is a huge point of difference payments for these items are made in Pam’s cans of food.

These are then donated to food banks in Canterbury, such as Ellesmere Food Bank, Delta Community Support Trust, the Salvation Army and the Christchurch City Mission.

Recently the charity donated cans of paint and food to Waiau

residents after the November 14th earthquake. The items to be sold on the charity Facebook page are auctioned as cheaply as possible, with the payment

by Pam’s food cans helping all involved.

When Allied Petroleum’s new fuel stop opens for trading on the site of the old Darfield Z Service Station, it will only be the first stage of the proposed operation.

“Our focus at this point is to offer the Darfield community a choice of fuel supply at competitive prices,” said a company spokesperson.

Initially the new facility will operate as an un-manned, 24 hour refuelling site, before stage two, which will see it become an owner operated service station later in the year,

including a retail convenience store. The site will continue as a self-service operation at night after the convenience store closes.

“It’s a large site providing excellent access for commercial vehicles, with a separate forecourt under canopy for smaller passenger vehicles.”

The card payment terminals accept a wide variety of cards including Allied card, Mobilcard, Ruralco card, Fleetcard, along with Eftpos and Visa cards. The station offers 91, 95 and diesel fuel, including a high flow diesel pump for faster refuelling of large commercial vehicles.

Selwyn District Council has installed two new toilet blocks at Coe’s Ford to provide improved facilities for people visiting this popular spot.

There are now three blocks to service the camping area.

added. “Fast broadband access is now an essential tool for many businesses to operate, as well as giving residents better access to a wide range of services and enabling them to keep in touch with friends and family.”

“Households,” said Amy, “and businesses in Lincoln and Rolleston are already making the most of the UFB network, and the roll-out is currently underway in Prebbleton.

“The expansion will mean that an additional 8,485 residents and business-owners in many of our other towns around Selwyn will also be able to reap the benefits of a worldclass broadband service in the coming years.”

Rakaia is the first of the new areas scheduled for completion, with work

to prevent recyclables from going to landfill.

In 2015 and 2016, the Council also installed an additional caravan dump station at North Terrace in Darfield and new toilets at Darfield, Lake Lyndon, Lake Coleridge intake, Glentunnel, Whitecliffs Domain and Springfield.

“Coe’s Ford and Chamberlain’s Ford are popular camping spots and are used both by local residents and visitors to our district. By installing extra toilet and recycling facilities at key locations in our district we hope to meet the needs of locals and tourists who use these services and prevent problems from occurring elsewhere in Selwyn,” said Cameron Warr, Warr Selwyn District Council’s Parks and Land Manager.

A new toilet block will also be

expected to be completed there by June this year. The roll-out in the remaining areas will be carried out between January 2020 and August 2023.

Selwyn District Council has also made submissions on improving rural broadband coverage in areas where existing coverage is poor (mainly parts of rural Malvern and Ellesmere), and for mobile phone coverage to be increased along State Highway 73 and at tourism locations such as ski fields. The government has called for tenders for broadband providers to undertake rural broadband improvements with tenders closing in April 2017.

The www.drive.govt.nz website is proving to be a very effective tool in helping young drivers through the licencing process.

The NZ Transport Agency/ACC site, launched in June, is on target to meet its goals for the year.

ACC’s Stu Ross, Ross Road Injury Prevention Manager, commented this is a n encouraging start for the new initiative to help young people become confident and capable drivers.

“Key to ‘Drive’s’ success is keeping the customer at the centre of everything. With our partner NZTA we did extensive research with 15 - 24 year olds to find out what’s important for them, the challenges they face and why they learn to drive.”

In the six months since the web site was launched there have been over 140,000 users to the site, with over 13,000

completing pre-learner tests and over 276,000 video views.

“Visitors to the site are telling us they find the web site fun, easy to use and, more importantly, useful.

“This is demonstrated by the length of time people are spending on the site which is on average twelve minutes.

Drive has a number of key features including an interactive road code, driving videos, insider’s guide to the practical driving tests and resources for coaches who are helping people to learn to drive. Drivers who sign up can track their progress as they complete modules and get access to practice tests and special quizzes to help them prepare.

“Young drivers are still overrepresented in crash statistics.

Our first mee ng of 2017 saw us gathering at Aylesbury Corner for an evening ramble in the Aylesbury and Courtenay area. It is always good to visit local gardens as it shows us the type of plants that thrive in our area. The property of Jo Van der Woerd was our first stop, where the gardens were of a true rural design, very informal but full of interes ng specimens. Jo also looks aFer sick horses and there were some beau ful creatures there when we visited. I think they knew they had company judging by the way they raced around the paddocks showing off! There were some stunning hanging baskets filled with colourful annuals a7ached to the stable block and they caught the interest of the members. The gardens at our second port of call belonged to Robbie and Val Watson and to think they had only been in the property four years was amazing, such was the growth of the plants and trees. The bank of huge blue and white Agapanthus that lined the long drive was amazing, as was a clump of yellow lilies, six or seven feet tall and with a wonderful scent. Not if you were allergic to them though! Robbie favours conifers and had a wonderful stand of them in the garden. Finally we called at the home and garden of Club member Margaret Seaton.

Another lovely rural garden with lawns and stunning borders, where a lot of work had gone into making the garden what it is today. Margaret made us most welcome and allowed us to have supper in her home, no mean feat as we had around forty people on the ramble, some being guests of members, with one lady visi ng from Holland; so we enjoyed their company. Margaret had set out wine, juice and iced water on arrival and with the commi7ee supplying supper, it rounded off a great evening, as did the wonderful sunset and evening light across the paddocks at the rear of the house. Travelling back to Darfield the sky was awesome and we thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle.

Dunsandel RFC Netball are pleased to announce that they have secured a team of coaches for the upcoming 2017 netball season.

The Dunsandel Netball Committee is a new group of faces who have previously been involved with the Club in various roles. The club is focussing on a player centred approach, while creating a culture of developing values through sport.

The committee and coaches are excited about the upcoming season and about making playing netball for their Club a positive experience for all involved.

“We are a family and community orientated Club,” said a spokesperson, “with a comm itme nt to p lay er development. There are four areas that successful sports’ people develop at a young age; attitude, effort, risk taking and being team player.

“In the junior area of our Club, rather than the main focus being on winning or losing and who scores the goals, our coach es will a lso be emphasising exceptional personal attitudes, team attitudes, effort and taking risks. Although risk taking doesn’t always result in a successful shot, pass or intercept, when players take intelligent risks this will be encouraged.”

The Club President commented: “The Club is expanding this season and is looking for new players at all levels. In 2016 we had seven

teams in the Selwyn competition ranging from Juniors, through to Premier level. With our strong coaching team and willing volunteers we have the capacity to grow.

“Dunsandel RFC Netball have secured a team of eight coaches for the upcoming netball season (with a couple of extras up our sleeve).

“We have coaches working toward gaining their coaching awards, while three others currently hold their NZ Community Coaching Award.

They are: Jan Roberts, who has more than ten years of coaching experience. Jan has been involved in coaching school teams, as well as Primary grades, representative teams through to premier level. Jan holds her BTchLn (Bachelor of Teaching and Learning) and a NZ Community Coaching Award (NZCCA).

Anna O’Reilly who has ten years of coaching experience ranging from years 5-6, through to senior levels. Anna holds her Bachelor of Education (Tch) majoring in Physical Education.

Raynor Lough who has been coaching juniors for Dunsandel for the past four years and has a passion for youth netball. She has coached years 7-8, A and B teams at Ellesmere College and travelled with them to many tournaments in the past couple of years. Raynor holds

the role of Player and Coaching Development for the Club.

Sue Lee who has more than fifteen years of coaching, p la y ing a n d u mp irin g experience. Sue has coached for Dunsandel for two years starting with the Premier A team as assistant coach and taking over as head coach in the 2016 season. Over the past two years Sue has developed a positive culture in the Club’s senior team. Her approach continues to attract her players back to the Club.
