On Saturday friends, family and fellow Brigade members gathered in the Hororata Fire Station to celebrate fifty years of service to the Fire Brigade by Graham Stewart.

Stewart President of the United Fire Brigades Association Alan Kittelty presented the following speech at the award ceremony.

He began by welcoming the guests of honour Graham and Jan Stewart and their family, as well as various Fire Service officials, local MP Amy Adams and Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton.

Broughton From Alan: “To the Hororata Brigade, it is indeed an honour for me to be able to represent the UFBA on this very special occasion. It is even more special to be able to present this award to someone I have known for a long time and in a brigade very close to my own. My first memory of Graham was at waterway competitions for the Mid-Canty sub association where he would keep the running times on blackboards for all to see.

• Helped train local scouts for their Fire Competitions.

• Served on the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigade Association for 25 years.

• Received certificated recognition from the CPFBA for 25 years Blackboard Skills 1979-2004. Graham was a score and time keeper at the provincial competitions for the North, Mid and South sub competitions.

• UFBA Mid Canterbury Sub Association. Graham served on the executive from 1972-2000 Sec. 1984-2000; Pres. 2000-2001; Past Pres. 2001-2002.

Made an Honorary Life Member in 1989.

Malvern Community Board (MCB) are once again giving back to the community, by welcoming Santa to the ‘Grotto’ created in the historical Darfield Jail. This is a free event for families and a chance for the children to visit with the most popular person of the season.

The support of local businesses has enabled a free gift to be given to each child visiting Santa, and there’s also the opportunity for free photos with the big man. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to bring cameras/phones to take their own photos. The MCB would like to see as many children as possible making the most of this wonderful opportunity to see Santa and chat about the all important Christmas present list!

It is hard to believe that we are now into December and Christmas is fast approaching.

It has been a busy year for me in Parliament working on a variety of legislation, with a particular focus on measures to tackle family violence in my role as Minister of Justice. In my role as Minister for Communications I have continued to work hard to improve connectivity in rural areas around the country, as well as overseeing the roll-out of Ultra-Fast Broadband in urban centres.

It has also been a busy year here in the Selwyn electorate. I have held coffee meetings around the district, including in Darfield, Arthur’s Pass and Springfield, and will be holding more of these next year to give you the opportunity to come and meet me in a location convenient to you.

Local highlights for me this year included the Malvern A & P Show in March and the Hororata Highland Games and the Courtenay A & P Show in November.

I would like to wish all of the readers of the Malvern News a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. I hope that you have the opportunity to take a break and spend time doing what you love, whether that is relaxing with family and friends at the beach, reading a good book or getting out for a tramp in the bush.

If you have any concerns or issues that you think I may be able to assist with or would just like to make your views known to me, please contact my electorate office in Templeton.

Well here we are arriving at another Christmas. How time flies. This year seems to have gone by so much faster for me than previous years. I don’t think we are ever ready for Christmas, but we love the festive season with all the excitement and happiness it brings.

Christmas will be a little different for us this year, with one daughter just married, one about to get married, and two more nearly engaged to be married.

This has meant sharing Christmas with prospective inlaws and planning around a wedding after Christmas, so all the family can attend. But this busy-ness and planning hasn’t taken away the joy that Christmas brings. It just means there won’t be as many pillow cases, our version of stockings, being put out this year beside our daughter’s beds.

Regardless of how old we get, there is nothing like waking up in the morning to see presents stuffed in our pillow cases, beside our beds, and then to rise and see there is still more that Santa seems to have left under the tree. I’m sure we all have our own family traditions that we tend to pass on to the next generation, making Christmas special and unique to us.

Regardless of the costs, there is something gratifying about the giving of gifts and the fun and excitement of giving and receiving presents that makes us spend our hard earned money. Maybe it’s the joy we see on people’s faces, maybe it is the feeling we feel when we have made somebody happy, maybe it’s just the enjoyment of having family and friends.

The bible says that God also

loves to give good gifts and even as earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, so our heavenly father has even a greater desire to give good gifts to us his children, such is his love for us all. Of course many of us know that his Son, ‘Jesus Christ’, was the greatest gift of all, and the bible declares that an angel appeared to some shepherds on the night of his birth, saying, “the Saviour, yes the Messiah, the Lord has been born today”, then all the armies of heaven joined in and began praising God. Why? Because they couldn’t help but respond to the joy and excitement of a Father’s heart, seeing the gift of ‘His Son’ given for all mankind.

For some of us the birth of Christ doesn’t mean much, but it

doesn’t take away from the fact that history declares this event happened and this is the reason we celebrate Christmas.

My prayer for all of us is that we would stop to think about why a God in heaven would give us His Son as a gift, no longer as a baby, but as Lord and Saviour, and what this would mean for all of us and our Community if we could embrace the true meaning of Christmas as God intended.

His love, the new life that His salvation and hope brings, His peace, His joy, and His desire to do good to all men, just like we celebrate our love and giving of gifts to those we love.

TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND CARE OF YOUR PERSONAL POSSESSIONS I recall the first senior rugby training session I attended on leaving school, when I arrived in Turangi and left my gear bag outside the rugby club training rooms. A local man arrived and said, “I would not leave your bag there boy, you are in Turangi now!” That small piece of advice was taken on board and has served me well ever since.

In Darfield and the wider Selwyn District we live in a relatively safe community. However, through our area are the Old West Coast and West Coast Roads. Through these roads the whole cross section of society travel between Christchurch and the West Coast.

The vast majority of crimes that local Police attend may never have happened if people had taken more personal responsibility for their personal possessions and been more security conscious.

Here follows some basic common sense home security advice: • Always lock your vehicle and remove the key from the ignition when not in use.

• Lock your vehicle away in a garage where possible.

• When away from your home, shut the windows and lock the doors of your house and outbuildings.

Follow these three basic steps and you will drastically reduce the chances of being the victim of a crime.

In the three years I have been stationed at Darfield of all the burglaries I have personally attended in our large area, only one was where the premises were forcibly entered. The message we keep drumming into our community is lock your house and take personal responsibility for your home and farm security.

Recently Police have dealt with several poaching complaints.

Again the message we convey is very simple, ask the landowner for permission to go hunting on the property first. The penalty for unlawful hunting is now up to a $100,000 fine and two years imprisonment. There is a highly likely probability that upon conviction you would also have your firearms licence revoked.

Currently our agricultural contractors are working throughout the nights with agricultural work, please ensure all your machinery and tractors etc are up to safe roadworthy standards and are warranted and registered. When travelling between farms at night please have consideration for the public who are using the roads.

The local Darfield Police would like to thank the volunteers in our community for their great work over the past year and in particular the Fire Brigades, St John Ambulance and Malvern Community Patrol. These fine men and women volunteer hundreds of hours each year to help keep our community safe.

Stay safe on the roads over the holiday period and if out socialising have a plan in place to ensure you get home safely if drinking.

Darfield Preschool and Nursery have had yet another successful year which has been reflected in the continually increasing enrolments.

As a community based Early Childhood Centre we appreciate being able to make the most of our community and ensure we are actively involved in many community initiatives and events. Rhyannon Gregg (one of our parents) who has been a driving force with our Centre garden development was invited to be a part of establishing the ‘Community Garden’ in Darfield.

The Preschool Tamariki have actively participated by creating a scarecrow named Rongomatane (God of Cultivated Food) which the children have helped to assemble in the garden.

We have continued to be committed this year to further strengthening our partnerships with parents/whānau.

Throughout the year we have held parent information evenings focussing on our biculturalism, transitioning and how we plan to extend the learning for our Tamariki. Family are considered integral in their child’s learning journey and we look forward to continuing to strengthen whānau involvement in the forthcoming year.

This year we have enjoyed many family social occasions including a Halloween party, fish and chip evenings and a community ladies night. But one of our highlights has to be our Matariki celebrations where we held a hāngi at Preschool and invited ou r f a m i l i es /whān a u to celebrate with us. An amazing number of parents/whānau supported this evening making it another fantastic opportunity to further develop and build great relationships with our families. We also held an ‘Olympics Day’ to celebrate this year’s Olympics and invited Annabel’s Kindergarten and Darfield Playcentre along to participate in some Olympic activities. We wish all tamariki, families and whanau a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.

For those who are travelling on the roads this holiday season please drive safely and have regular rests on long trips.

In a radio broadcast at Christmas in 1940, while standing in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral that had been bombed and destroyed just five weeks earlier, the Reverend Richard Howard, Provost of the Cathedral, made a statement that boldly proclaimed what belief in Jesus as the Prince of Peace actually meant for those who follow him.

In that Christmas broadcast he made a commitment not to revenge, but to forgiveness and reconciliation with those responsible for the destruction of much of the city of Coventry and their cathedral. In his

message he declared that when the war was over he would work with those who had been enemies, “to build a kinder, more Christ-child-like world”.

Think about that. He talked about making friends with the people with whom his country would continue to be in combat for the next five years, and he kept that commitment, even after five more violent years.

That is the work of a prophet.

Boldly reminding us in the midst of evidence to the contrary, that God’s work and message is to be lived out in this world. By doing so God brings healing, wholeness and forgiveness. We

celebrate Jesus’s birth as the Prince of Peace. The best way that we can celebrate this is for our lives to be shaped by the rules of that kingdom by peacemaking, understanding, dialogue, healing, forgiveness and showing what the love of God actually means in the fractured places of this world.

On Friday, December 9th the three year old children from Annabel’s Kindergarten put on a Christmas Concert for their family and friends.

“The children have worked hard preparing for the concert with many rehearsals of singing and dress up. With a large audience, the three year olds sang their favourite Christmas songs. This was followed by a visit from ‘Santa’ and some delicious Christmas cake made by the children,” said a spokesperson from Annabel’s.

“It was a relaxing and enjoyable night for all. We would like to thank all our families for their support in 2016! Have a Merry and Safe Christmas,” they concluded.

There was a fantastic turn out for the 2016 Annabel’s Educare Christmas concert which was held on the morning of Friday, December 9th. The daily enrolment of children more than doubled as little people arrived with their parents/caregivers, grandparents, and extended families.

stories of her fairyland home and friends. Children were then able to choose what they wanted Rainbow Lily to paint on their faces or hands.

Next was the ‘concert’ which children and teachers had been enthusiastically preparing for over the last month. This included the singing of Christmas songs, with the addition of movement and actions.

“Many families commented that

they too would be able to participate in the concert, as they have been hearing these songs and observing the actions as excited children have been eagerly sharing their new music and movements with family at home,” said an Educare spokesperson.

A casual shared lunch and picnic followed, and while everyone waited for the arrival of the much anticipated guest, children were able to share their art works, special interests and favourite activities with family.

The Centre’s newly constructed fort being a definite favourite.

Santa arrived and after a short discussion about possible Christmas presents, offered each child a small gift and an ice block.

“The Christmas celebration and concert is always a special experience at Educare, and we are glad that the children were able to share it with their families, peers and teachers.”

On December 1st the Chairman, Geoff Inch reported to over twenty people attending the H au n u i T r u st (D arf i e ld retirement housing village) AGM. He noted that the Trust had completed a successful yea r co n so l id at in g t he requirements of a registered retirement village. The Trust now employs a Resident Liaison Co-ordinator and a Property Maintenance Co-ordinator to provide timely assistance to residents.

Noting that the village was

established to ensure people who spent their working lives in the Malvern area are able to stay in the district as they age, the Trust has updated the way they choose new residents by publically advertising when a unit becomes available.

In concluding his report Geoff thanked the many community volunteers who support the

International Volunteer Day was December 5th and this was celebrated on Friday, December 9th with a Malvern Community Board morning tea.

This was held to acknowledge and thank those who actively volunteer, for all the work done in the community. The morning tea was much enjoyed by all those attending.

Local volunteers assist the Council to provide a huge range of local services including community facilities, local community committees, parks, libraries, pools, civil defence and rural fire control.

Once again, Trinity Church in Darfield has been adorned with the addition of painted windows for Christmas.

This year, ten pictures have been painted to depict the story of the birth of Jesus, as told in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew in the Bible.

Volunteers met at the church last week to assist with the painting and ’artists’ ranged in age from five to nineteen, with a couple of adult volunteers getting into the paint pots as well!

“It was pleasing to note that most of the paint went on the windows rather than on the people,” laughed Rev Susan Baldwin!

AUCKLAND HERE WE COME!!!

Throughout 2016 the Year 5 & 6 students at Springfield School fundraised to contribute to the costs of a school trip to Auckland. They held movie nights, sausage sizzles, sold packs of bacon and cosmetics and used a technology unit on sustainable resources to make shopping bags from recycled materials. With the help of parents and friends of the school this fundraiser alone accounted for $2,000 of their target of $6,000.

On November 28th our school buses dropped 13 excited children and our parent helpers and teachers at Christchurch Airport. We flew north for a fun packed week in New Zealand’s largest city. Our programme was varied and with the help of two friends driving mini buses we explored parts of Auckland that were diverse and different from Piha to Mission Bay, Remuera to Mangere.

We caught the train to Britomart, the ferry to Devonport and took in fantas c views of Auckland from One Tree Hill, the Sky Tower and North Head.

One of the most impressive sights for these children who have grown up with a devastated and destroyed city centre was the towering canyons of high rise buildings in downtown Auckland. They couldn’t get over the sheer volume and density of the inner city.

My highlights are going to the Stardome and lying in the planetarium. It went all around you and we watched the astronauts and how they prepare for space. I recommend Phish Food – chocolate icecream with melted marshmallows and chocolate chunks! By Brooke.

My favourite part was probably overlooking the whole of Auckland, travelling on the ferry to North Head and all the old guns that were used in World War 1 and 2 and looking at the big buildings and comparing them to Christchurch. By Jordan.

I really liked going to the Sky Tower and reaching a height I haven’t been before in a building and you could see Auckland from every angle. By Blake.

My favourite things were playing in Mission Bay in the soB white sand and the warm aqua waves, going on the smooth ferry to explore the North Head WW1 tunnels, going to MOTAT and seeing all the exciDng and interesDng exhibits and machines there and last of all going up the legendary Sky Tower and looking at all the views every way. By Tor. A highlight of my trip would be Mission Bay where the water was very warm and we could go out a long way. We had compeDDons to make a mermaid and a sandcastle and it was really fun. We had fish and chips on the beach. Another highlight would be seeing the whole of Auckland on One Tree Hill and in the Sky Tower. By Danielle.

My favourite part was the Auckland Zoo with all the animals that you don’t see every day. I parDcularly liked the Tasmanian Devil. I have never seen one before and it was a very unusual looking animal. Also Kelly Tarlton’s with sea creatures big and small. As we moved around on the travellator sDngrays and sharks swam over our heads! By Grace.

My highlights were walking in the North Head tunnels because it explained what would happen if Auckland was aHached by sea. I liked the Sensory Maze because it was a challenge to use all your senses to work your way out. By Obie.

The foyer of the Darfield Baptist Church on Greendale Road was a hive of activity on Monday morning when around two hundred beautifully crafted stockings were filled with goodies in preparation for delivery to the children of Kaikoura. Pupils of Christchurch’s Middleton Grange School had sewed some of the stockings as part of their annual service activity, with donations of fabric made by local businesses: Polkadotcom, The Sewing Room and Mason’s Drapery in support of the project.

There were messages of hope included in the stockings, one of which said: These donations of

baked goods come from the loving people of the Darfield community ….

Local Springfield landscape artist, Vicky Peacock not only set herself a goal of completing the 100 Days Project, but was also joined this year by her five year old daughter Ruby.

Founded in 2011 the 100 Days Project is an annual event that runs for o ne hundred consecutive days and is open to anyone who would like to participate in doing a daily creative exercise. Since its inception more than 3,000 people from all over the world have taken part in the project.

The initiative gives anyone (young or old, artist and nonartist) a framework and the permission to be creative. It challenges participants to dig deep into their creative reserves, to rely on a readiness to work in order to achieve creative breakthrough.

Right from the start of the challenge, five year old Ruby decided she wanted not only to participate, but also had her subject matter, buildings and trees, established in her mind Ruby commented: “I am five years old and I am going to draw a different picture every day of a building or a tree; because I find them interesting.”

Each day Ruby set about creating her art, using a

Ruby Peacock with one of her 100 day project artworks. different take on the theme, using pens and various mediums, such as clay, Lego, iPad, sketches, canvas and paint to name but a few.

“Ruby did get tired of doing it on occasion,” Vicky said, “but we both had the goal of completing the challenge and treating ourselves to some new art pens once the project was complete.

“Some entries were pictures that took hours, others took a few minutes, depending on how busy we were at the time,” Vicky added.

“Both of us have got so much out of the project. We have made gifts for people, I have had several commissions and it has led to a whole new style of art for me.

“Ruby created a beautiful artwork for a friends fortieth birthday and she has also made another lovely one for her teacher who is leaving school,” Vicky commented.

“I am originally a landscape artist and I was interested in creating a series of similar works as pen drawings for the project, with the initial plan of creating a colouring in book.

However, as the project progressed it evolved into something completely different where I became fascinated with zentangle (creating images by drawing structured patterns),” Vicky said.

It’s not really surprising that young Ruby has produced such spectacular artwork for this project when mum Vicky has designed and produced numerous murals, teaches art, works as an artist and focuses on enabling children to bring their own ideas and visions to fruition.

CHRISTMAS - A SPECIAL SPECIAL FAMILY TIME Christmas is often a time spent with family, enjoying good food, sharing gifts and relaxing together. We plan family gettogethers and family holidays.

It’s also a time when, if there has been the loss of a loved one or a family break-down, the family time is hard and painful.

The story of Christmas is based on a family. “When the time was right, God sent his Son, and a woman gave birth to him.” (Galatians 4.4. The Bible).

Many of us create a nativity scene at home with Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus,

surrounded by animals, shepherds and wise-men.

At a point in history, God in heaven sent his Son into the world. At Christmas we remember he was born as a baby into an earthly family. He came to help all of us know God as our Father and to be his children. As an adult he stood out as someone who taught and lived as God would. His teaching and example has stood the test of time and inspires people all over the world. His primary purpose was to show the way each of us can relate with God

as our Heavenly Father and to find peace with him and our earthly relationships.

I encourage you to make some time this Christmas to read one of the historical accounts of Jesus’ time on earth. Read Matthew, Mark, Luke or John in the Bible. Get along to one of the many church services around the district to share in the re-telling of the story that has brought hope to people all over the world.

Dancers from the Ballet Academy in West Melton recently sat their student Ballet exams. Pupils sat either their Primary Ballet Exam or their Grade One Ballet Exam. They all received Distinction and were examined by an international examiner from the British Ballet Organisation (BBO Dance) with some girls achieving fifty out of fifty - which was an incredible result.

Ballet Academy dancer, Stella Stewart also gained a Certificate of Excellence, which is awarded to a student who displays technique, artistry and presentation skills beyond their level.

To round off a very successful year we held our ‘Christmas Do’ at the home and garden of Club member Chris ne Anderson and husband John. The Andersons have been in their property for two and a half years and the transforma on to the garden is amazing. Although the property is set in the Darfield township you could easily imagine yourself way out in the country, the property is so well laid out, giving stunning rural views of the mountains. A long expanse of lawn is surrounded by wide beds containing many of Chris ne’s favourites, rhododendrons being very popular. There is colour, structure and texture, and a lot of love and hard work gone into making this garden what it is today. Our lunch was delicious with a wide variety of savoury and sweet plates and it was good to sit and catch up aDer a busy Club year. Our raffle was well supported with the proceeds being donated to the Red Cross to assist the good folk of the Kaikoura area in their hour of need. So many thanks to members for their generosity. It only leaves me to thank the Commi1ee for all their hard work over the year and also to the kind people who have opened up their gardens to us this year. Many thanks to the team at the Malvern News for their ongoing support, we appreciate it very much. On Wednesday, December 7th the Primary/Intermediate schools’ Canterbury Sports Tournament was held at the Ashburton Domain and attended by athletes selected from throughout Malvern.

Those attending this annual tournament have to have won their events in the zoned athletic competitions, held throughout the region.

Children aged from eight to thirteen years of age participated in age groups against strong competitors.

All arrived on the day striving to compete to the highest level and to achieve placings or personal bests. With over 2,000 students participating and the weather staying fine, it allowed all events to take place. Pleasingly there was an outstanding and large contingent of family and friends in support of the young athletes as all they gave of their best.

Selwyn District Council has undertaken an assessment of its nine swimming pools to ensure their operations comply with the Health and Safety in Work Act, which came into force in April 2016.

Selwyn has one year-round swimming complex, the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, and two pool complexes at Darfield and Southbridge which open over summer and are supervised by lifeguards. There are also six Council-owned community swimming pools at Halkett, Leeston, Prebbleton, Courtenay, Killinchy and Sheffield.

“As the owner of these facilities the Council has a duty of care

to people using the pools,” said Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton.

Broughton “Nobody wants a child to be injured or drown at a local pool.”

As part of the health and safety assessment, the Council has inspected each facility and met with the local committees that manage the six community pools to discuss safety issues.

The Council will seek commitment from local pool committees and users to agree on plans which include regular water quality testing, ensuring that unauthorised users can’t access pools, secure chemical storage, signage and having first aid resources on site.

Plans will also require active supervision to be in place when swimmers use these pools. Active supervision could include trained lifeguards, community supervisors who have received appropriate training, or parents, who have

received information about their responsibilities, supervising their own children.

At Halkett, Killinchy and L e e s t on , C ou n c i l s t a ff supervision is likely to be provided by community members and users.

At Sheffield and Prebbleton, which are both busy facilities, the Council will supply trained lifeguards. Sheffield will operate from 1 to 7pm, in line with Darfield pool hours.

The community pool at Courtenay will not be able to open unless issues around active supervision and ageing plant and equipment are resolved. The total cost of required works for Courtenay is estimated at between $60,000 and $80,000. Last summer the pool had only around a dozen families using the facility and it has been recommended that they work in with the neighbouring Halkett Pool.

It's been a busy final term at Darfield Playcentre, and they were lucky to be able to visit one of their families’ farms. The children were able to see many different farm animals and were even able to feed some of the lambs and goat kids with bottles of milk. Holding the ducklings and guinea pigs was a big hit and of course there were huge muddy puddles to jump in!

West Melton and Rolleston Playcentres joined Darfield Playcentre for a visit from Sharon and Alan Holt, Holt who brought to life their fabulous, award winning, Te Reo singalong books; complete with music, acting and props. The

older children also enjoyed seeing Wonkey Donkey author Craig Smith's show over at Darfield Primary school.

The children have really enjoyed taking part and being involved in the Playcentre’s sizeable vege/berry garden, watering the plants, watching them grow and enjoying the yummy results.

Darfield Playcentre exhibited some great artwork at the Courtenay Show this year, and commented that, “it was such a great feeling for the little children to see their own creations on display”.

A Playcentre spokesperson added, “it was great to see our Playcentre whanau come

together at our yearly Christmas Party, the children made tree decorations, had pony rides and Santa even popped in with a small gift for everyone.”

Playcentre children have been enjoying lots of outside water and sandpit play and parents commented on how lovely it was seeing the younger children learning new skills from the older ones.

“It’s great that more new families are coming along to see what our little Playcentre is all about. We have sessions running Monday to Friday 9-12, with a wide range of ages and different activities available each session.”

South Island Super Rugby supremacy is on the line again this February, when the Farmlands’ Cup goes up for grabs.

Following on from the success of the inaugural Farmlands’ Cup fixture hosted by the Pulse Energy Highlanders in Waimumu in February 2016, the BNZ Crusaders will this time play host to their southern neighbours at the Darfield Rugby Club on February 4th, 2017.

BNZ Crusaders CEO Hamish Riach said the event was a hit amongst the rural community last year, and the Crusaders were thrilled to have the opportunity to continue the new competition in 2017.

“We’re excited to be hosting our own Farmlands Cup game on February 4th, 2017, which we will host at the Darfield Rugby Club. A new grandstand will be erected for the game and we hope to get around 5,000 people along to the Rugby Club to enjoy this unique event,” Hamish said.

Farmlands’ Chief Executive Peter Reidie said it was great to see the Farmlands’ Cup return after the 19-19 stalemate played in front of a sell-out crowd in February.

“The Farmlands’ Cup is all about bringing rugby back to the grassroots ­ the local communities that foster our future rugby stars,” Peter said.

“The Darfield Rugby Club was an obvious choice to host this event and we’re proud to bring Super Rugby teams to the country.”
