On Sunday December 4th the Malvern School of Music students performed in the ‘High Achievers Concert’ to family and friends at Darfield’s Trinity Church. This was held in honour of those students who have successfully completed their exams this year and to showcase their talent to an audience.

Oxford’s Big Night Out, to be held on Thursday, December 15th (5-9pm) is an opportunity to enjoy the village atmosphere, entertainment and Christmas shopping in the township’s Main Street and Pearson Park.

As well as the boutique shops and cafés, there will be over forty market stalls and food vendors trading.

The Winter wonderland display of the twelve days of Christmas exhibition is open until 9pm at the Jaycee Hall on Main Street

while the man in red, Santa himself, walks the street.

Children have a range of entertainment laid on for them with a puppet show planned, face painting, pony rides, and Kids Giant Games.

Visitors can relax, get the last of the Christmas Shopping out of the way and be entertained by the Rangiora Brass Band and Oxford’s local school choirs. A great way to start (or finish) the festive season!

The Sewing Room A new and spectacular trophy was presented on Wednesday, November 30th at Darfield High School. Sacha Smith of the School’s Rural College was the inaugural recipient of the trophy which was initiated by Malvern Federated Farmers as their memorial to the late Neil Stott.

Stott The trophy was presented to the student who displayed outstanding performance and practical work.

Current Chairman of the Malvern Branch of Federated Farmers, Peter Williams said the tribute was felt by its members to be entirely justified following Neil’s lifetime of tireless work in the farming sector.

At the time of his death Neil was the Chairman of the Darfield local branch of Federated Farmers and had been for sixteen years.

“Neil, a great advocate of farming, was also a dedicated and committed president of the Branch,” Peter said. “He always worked hard for farmers and farming, during some challenging years.

“Neil’s passion was wool and this is why it was entirely appropriate to adorn the trophy with a sheep,” Peter added.

“Neil was also innovative and was instrumental in persuading farmers to install generators on cell phone towers, having learnt how chaotic things were after the 2006 snow. He held farm days on his property, one of which saw 600 through the gates, introducing rural life to city dwellers and edited a monthly ‘Neil’s News’ notifying farmers of current issues and events.”

When Pauline Sewell and a group of her violin students from the Malvern School of Music went to Westmar Senior Care residence to play for them last Friday, they got a reaction they’ve not had there before.

“We went along, as we have in the past,” said Pauline, “to play a selection of Christmas carols and other festive favourites, but this year, for the first time, we had residents really get into the spirit of things and sing along with us. It was great and I’m so glad everyone enjoyed it so much.”

The half hour performance covered a variety of Christmas music and was very well received and much enjoyed, by everyone at Westmar.

Once again the Selwyn Gallery Christmas Shopping days held Saturday, November 26th and Sunday 27th proved as popular as previous years with the local community out in force to enjoy the event. Frazer “It was fantastic that two of our major prizes went to locals and I hope that everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did. It was nice to be able to give something back to the community in appreciation for supporting us while we were building the new service station,” Sandra added.

“At times while we were building, access to the pumps

and shop was difficult, but I am sure you will all agree the results were well worth it.

Darfield now has a large spacious forecourt and modern shop that is an asset to the town.”

It’s been a year to celebrate for the team at Challenge Darfield who along with owners Geoff and Annabelle Hampton have also recently scooped the ‘Challenge Retailer Of The Year’ award at the company’s annual conference.

The Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Triathlon was held at Pegasus on Thursday, December 1st. The first race began at 10.30am with two courses set. The 9-10 year olds triathlon consisted of a 75 metre swim, 5.4 kilometre

bike ride and 2.3km run. The 11 -13 year olds had a 100 metre swim, 10.8 kilometre bike ride and 2.3km run. Students from throughout Selwyn had trained and competed in the event. West Melton Primary School sent a team of six competitors and had some wonderful results.

Stacey M. in the nine year old girls event finished a fantastic second place out of 69 competitors. Isla Mc. and Daisy M. competed in the ten year old girls’ race, finishing sixth and

twelfth respectively.

Holly Smith from Hororata School also competed in the nine year old girls section with a superb second placing in the swim and a seventh overall, while her brother Ben competing in the ten year old boys, won the swimming leg and had an overall placing of twelfth.

Congratulations to all students that attended from Malvern Schools - a great achievement by all who were selected to compete.

SILVER FERN RALLY: Since 2006 the week-long, Silver Fern Rally revival event has been held every two years to celebrate New Zealand's original Rally held in 1969.

Since then the event (November 28th - December 4th) has grown in stature and is now recognised as one of the preeminent long distance marathon -type events in the world.

This year it attracted a 45strong entry including a number of well-known names from New Zealand and overseas.

Competitors completed 1056.02 km of closed, mostly gravel, special stages and over 1,700 km of travelling inbetween. Starting in Christchurch, before heading south, the competitors had

overnights in Oamaru, Dunedin and Gore, before returning again to Dunedin and then to Timaru.

The final stages took the rally onto Darfield’s Auchenflower Road in the Malvern Hills, before a return to the finish in Christchurch.

The winner of the 2016 Silver Fern Rally went to Meirion Evans from Wales and co-driver Lestyn Williams in a Ford Escort Mk2 with a total time of 9:48:03:4. Second place Stewart Reid from Great Britain and co-driver Dave Neill in a Ford Escort Mk2 RS1800 with a time of 9:48:49:2 and third place Allan Dippie from Dunedin and co-driver Paul Coghill in a Porsche 911 with a time of 9:58:41:2.

MCLAREN EPIC NZ TOUR: Sunday, December 4th saw a rather expensive rolling motor show head through Springfield.

Stopping at the Challenge Service Station, locals had plenty to look at as the McLaren Epic New Zealand Tour made its way through the township. The convoy of thirty two McLarens toured from Auckland to Queenstown in celebration of New Zealand’s race car legend Bruce McLaren (Bruce was a New Zealand race-car designer, driver, engineer and inventor, whose name lives on in the McLaren team which is one of the most successful in Formula One championship history).

Every McLaren mid-engined mode l ev er m ad e was represented on the tour, with some travelling from places as far away as the United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong and Japan to participate.

At the recent Canterbury A & P Show Hororata’s Lucinda Murray and her horse Soweto gained some extremely pleasing results.

The pair won the Livamol RAS Thoroughbred Show Horse under saddle class against some very tough competition.

The win saw them presented with a Pitman Racing sponsored rug, a gift pack for Soweto and a beautiful trophy.

After an approach from the new West Melton Four Square and the BNZ Bank, pupils from West Melton Primary School were encouraged to organise an Art Competition for the school’s year 5 and 6 Moa Team. Pupils were asked to design something ‘artistic’ to fill the gap currently vacant until it’s filled with a BNZ ATM machine in the West Melton Village Shopping centre.

Part of the brief was that the designs had to have connections to West Melton and its community clearly evident.

With over seventy students enthusiastically participating, twelve designs were chosen for display (to be rotated). Lawson Scott from BNZ awarded the Moa Team a brand new IPad Air and Brent Little of West Melton Four Square awarded vouchers to those students whose designs

were successful.

Meanwhile Pukeko garden students have been working with Emma Smith, a parent and West Melton community member, to establish a planting area around the school BMX bike track. The children had to measure out the area, research types of plants and create a planting plan. This was presented to West Melton School Principal Sue Jackson.

Southern Woods Nursery Rolleston, were approached to see if they could assist and work with the school. This request was kindly accepted, which was much appreciated. A working bee on November 25th was held with over 300 plants being planted on the day.

On November 21st, the Year 3 and 4 Pukeko Team held their athletics sports day at the

School. With over 100 students participating, it was a day of throwing, jumping and running with the children enthusiastically participating and learning new skills.

Young talented, years five and six students from West Melton Primary School put their talent on display when they hosted their Moa Art Exhibition and presented it to the school community on Friday, November 25th.

This term students have worked on connecting art with the

community. With a trip into town to the SCAPE public sculptures, the students were encouraged and supported in designing, drawing, painting or making their chosen artwork. The talented artists went on to display their art at the community art exhibition.

“Wow! What a night,” exclaimed organisers of the Weedons’ School Twilight Fair, held to celebrate 145 years of the educational institution. “The weather held out for us and we had people flocking through the gates - 2,000 of them in fact!”

The extremely well-attended Fair had an outstanding selection of stalls, children’s games, entertainment by band ‘Old Skool’ and as is right and proper for this time of year -

The fair committee were over whelmed with how much support the event received from the community and commented that this made all the long hours of organisation, well worthwhile.

“The Fair had that buzzy feel around it,” said a spokesperson for the committee, “and we have received lots of positive feedback; even a request to do it all again next year! We'll have to see - no promises yet,” they
