The sixth annual Hororata Highland Games took place last Saturday and attracted a record crowd of well over 10,000 people, as well as a record number of competitors.

Drawcard competitor Jacko Gill created a new field record in the inaugural twenty two pound Hammer Throwing (28 metres).

“I am really glad that Hororata was my first experience of Highland Games, it was inspiring and I can’t wait to do more. The size of the event blew me away, I have never competed in an athletic event with such a huge crowd unless you are somewhere like the Olympics or Commonwealth Games,” Jacko reflected.

The event attracted nearly one hundred Highland Dancers, making it one of the largest competitions in New Zealand, eleven Pipe Bands, fifty four Solo Pipers and Drummers and twelve Tug O‘ War teams. Four teams spun their way to glory in the Highland Spin, thirty people took aim at the Small Bore Shooting Championship and twelve Amateur men and women Heavy Athletes toss, threw and strained for the Hororata Highland Games Heavy Championship.

2016 Chieftain, Kyle Warren wowed the crowd with a contemporary performance on his bagpipes of ‘We Will Rock You’ to rev the competitors up before the mighty Hororata Stones.

“Overall I was really impressed with the event, it is certainly one of the best Highland Games I have been to in the world. I commend the organisers on how they engage young people in the event. This is evident right through from the competitions to the ‘Have A Go’ events, it is unique to the Hororata Highland Games,” Kyle commented.

Seventeen school teams competed in the Deep South Junior Warriors with a team from Darfield High School winning.

“All of this would not be possible without the Clan Hororata volunteers,” said event manager Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll “We had a record number of people volunteering this year and they should all be extremely proud of the event they staged. Many, many people have commented on how professional the event was and how welcoming the

atmosphere,” Cindy added.

“This event seems to capture people’s hearts right from Clan Hororata, to competitors, our sponsors, stall holders and visitors. It has a very special atmosphere and we are already looking to see how we can build on this for November 11th 2017,” Cindy finished.

Once again Hororata Primary School Principal Marty Gameson worked tirelessly at the Hororata Highland Games, running the Deep South Junior W ar r io rs S ect i o n. T h i s competition included Toss the Caber (throw a wooden pole for distance), Stone Putt (throw the stone near a target) and Farmers’ Walk (carry the stones as far and as fast as you can). He took seventeen teams of four through their paces and ended up with Darfield High School students H am i sh T h or nl ey, T om Freeman, Jonty Kupe and Oliver Blackburn as the team winners.

Both Tom and Hamish were part of the winning Hororata Primary team from last year.

There were over 200 children up to age fourteen ‘Having A Go’ in the afternoon’s event. The event was a hectic time for Marty, his wife Delia, Delia daughter Abbi and the Hororata Primary School Staff of Julia Raybould, Raybould Megan Stewart, Amanda Cullen, Jenni Foster, Donna Moore and Penny Oliver.

Darfield’s Chief Fire Office, Alan Kittelty recently elected as President of the United Fire Brigades’ Association.

On the weekend of October 28th to 30th the 138th conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association was held in Christchurch. The conference was attended by approximately 480 people and local Darfield Chief Fire officer, Alan Kittelty was elevated to position of President.

“I am honoured and privileged

to be elected to the Presidential role,” Alan said, “and I am looking forward to the coming year. The Fire Services of NZ are currently in a climate of change with the transition to Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). It promises to be an exciting and positive time ahead,” he concluded.

More than 150 years after West Melton was founded, residents now have their own modern supermarket.

Four Square West Melton was opened officially by the mayor of Selwyn District, Sam Broughton on Tuesday, November 8th.

Construction on the Store began in February as part of the shopping centre development on Weedons Ross Road, directly opposite West Melton School.

The 800m2 of retail floor space is now ready for customers.

Owners Brent and Leah Little said Tuesday’s opening was a historic day for both the town and Four Square, each of which has a proud heritage.

“Four Square has been bringing groceries to local communities since 1924, I have fond memories of visiting the Four Square in Hokitika when I was a boy,” said Brent.

“West Melton, meanwhile, got its first grocery store in 1872, eight years after the town was founded, before the store was moved into the old blacksmith’s shop in 1937. Four Square West Melton represents a meeting of both timelines, and I’m proud to bring 21st century shopping to West Melton - with

no horseshoes but plenty of car parks.”

“The supermarket’s modern features include the latest in customer-focussed layout and design, energy-efficient lighting and ozone-friendly refrigeration.

“New trolleys will ensure a smooth ride through the store too and we will have a great range of fresh produce, baking, meat and seafood, plus hightech checkouts,” said Leah.

Brent’s own retailing history goes back twenty two years, since leaving school. He’s worked for New World and Pak’nSave, and done everything from packing bags to slicing ham.

“Experience is key to running supermarkets, and I’m looking forward to applying mine to our new store and getting to know the people of West Melton and the surrounding areas,” Brent added.

Roger Davidson, Davidson GM Property and Retail Development, Foodstuffs South Island, commented that Four Square’s focus on community engagement is what’s helped it last and continue to grow.

“Our stores are run by the people who own them, so they’re meeting their customers every day,” Roger said.

For the past three years Pam Duncan has organised Christmas shopping at the Selwyn Gallery. It has become so popular with locals and those from surrounding areas that the small group usually involved, have been substantially increased. This year the event will take place on November 26th/27th and there will be a new group of people offering their wares for sale.

“I will be there with my Christmas goodies,” Pam commented, “and I have added lots of different products from those offered in previous years,” she added.

“Christmas Santa sacks will be on offer along with Christmas stockings, advent calendars, gift baskets, fudge and lots more.”

West Eyreton School is a smallish rural school with a roll of just over 200. Their PTA have, on two previous occasions, run a very successful Twilight Fete, and on November 25th, plan to present their third one. It’s the School’s main fundraising event for the year and gives those attending an opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done, enjoy dinner and dessert, while catching up with friends or acquaintances.

Children can attend the free show at 6pm (giving adults some peace to eat or shop!) and the list of entertainment on hand is impressive (see the advertisement in this issue for further details).

At the time of going to print there were over seventy confirmed stallholders but as organisers are aware from the 2015 Fete (which ended up attracting ninety plus stalls) this is likely to increase.

Around 3,000 people attended last year, but a revamped marketing campaign for 2016 has spread the word even wider and organisers hope for an even greater turnout.

Some of the confirmed stall holders are: Little Red Fox (Handmade Gifts for Precious Bubbas and Crayon Accessories for Creative kids), Evelyn Rose Design (illustrator/designer maker of colourful homewares), In My Nature (variety of nature inspired products for children from teepees to cushions), Silvan Gallery (frames), Shabbyvans (miniature caravans and dolls), Spicecraft (hand blended NZ inspired food seasonings), Merlesque Jewellery (bespoke jewellery designs). New to the fete this

year and something to definitely look out for is the PTA Plant Plot - selling a variety of vegetable and bedding plant seedlings for the garden.

Organisers have arranged to keep hunger pangs at bay with a full complement of varied food vendors while the children are ably catered for by entertainment from: Beyond the Faerie Tree, miniature railway, pony rides, bouncy castles, and a visit from Darth Vader.

The Twilight Fete is a free event to attend making it pleasantly family and visitor friendly (there’s an ATM onsite too).

There’s about to be a recordbreaking Supermoon - the biggest in nearly seventy years.

As night sets in on Monday November 14th, folk are encouraged to wander outside and look at the sky.

“If the weather is clear, the moon will be at its biggest and brightest in nearly seventy years, and it won't put on a similar display until late 2034,” astronomers commented.

A so-called ‘Supermoon’ occurs when the moon is not only full, but is also orbiting close to Earth. This month's full moon will be the closest to Earth since January 26th, 1948.

NASA said a ‘Supermoon’ technically called a Perigee Moon - can appear to be as much as fourteen per cent bigger and thirty per cent brighter than a full moon at its furthest orbital point.

Since the moon has an elliptical orbit, one side of the orbit (the Perigee) is about 48,000 kilometres closer to Earth than the other side (the Apogee).

When the Earth, Moon and Sun line up in an orbit, while the moon is on its nearest approach to Earth, viewers are treated to a so-called ‘Supermoon’.

This happens three times this year: on October 16th, November 14th and December

14th. But, on the middle date, the moon becomes full just two hours after its closest approach to Earth.

"On November 14th, it becomes full within about two hours of Perigee - arguably making it an ‘Extra-Supermoon," a NASA spokesperson added.

Anyone planning to view the November 14th ‘Supermoon’ should try to get somewhere nice and dark, away from city lights, if possible.

“Rural communities are enjoying better economic and social opportunities thanks to improved local cell phone coverage,” said Selwyn MP Amy Adams.

Adams “An area the size of 450,000 rugby fields has been added to the country's cell network in just two years and rural areas are reaping the benefits,” Amy added.

“34 new cell towers have been built throughout the country since 2014, including the cell tower at Castle Hill, which has led to better local cell coverage”.

Amy commented that better cell

coverage helps drive economic development and enables rural Selwyn to take part in the digital economy.

“It’s also essential for emergency situations and makes personal life more convenient for people living and working in remote areas,” she said.

The new towers are a result of requirements set in the auction of the 700 MHz band of radio spectrum, won by Spark and Vodafone in 2014. Under the agreement they were required to build new towers in rural

areas in the first five years after the purchase.

The programme has added 3,825 square kilometres to the country’s cell network, and more towers are scheduled to be built in coming years.

“Improving rural connectivity is a priority for the Government. The project is complemented by the Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative, and both programmes are helping boost Selwyn’s local economy and supporting our rural community,” Amy concluded.

The 2016 Rolleston Community Fireworks evening on November 5th took place, for the first time, at the newly developed Foster Park and was attended by a crowd in excess of 15,000. The change of venue from Rolleston Reserve enabled the organising committee to take the experience to another intensity with the fireworks at the same level as the crowd and not separated by a tree line or buildings. A new sound company was employed this year to project the band music and ultimately the fireworks music around the park. Special mention has been made by the public about the quality and

selection of the music that the fireworks played to.

Paul Collins of Fireworks International, who has been involved with the current format for eighteen years, added a nice touch to the event this year by constructing a sign with 150 on it which when the fireworks started, burned around the image with a white glow in recognition of Rolleston’s 150th anniversary.

The crowd was well behaved, everyone enjoyed themselves and the police on duty reported no incidents.

“The event is organised by a small committee representing the Rolleston Residents Association, the Rolleston

Reserve Management Committee and other community groups who run fund raising stalls on the night.

The event costs over $50,000 to run and without the entry fee the commercial vendors rents, $15,000 received from Pub Charity and $2,500 from the Selwyn District Council, the event would not be what it is today,” said Jens Christensen, chairman of the organising committee. “The community groups who raise funds for themselves on the night collectively earn over $30,000, so all in all it is a very important and iconic event in the Selwyn calendar,” Jens concluded.

Back in October we were at Broadfield Garden just the other side of Rolleston, a garden of Interna onal Significance. With a descrip on such as this, we knew we would not be disappointed. On entering the premises we were guided to the na ve border with six metre wide beds planted out with about 300 varie es of na ves. The canal, a central feature of the garden, was another show stopper. With no deciduous trees, there are no leaves in the canal in the Autumn. We visited at a wonderful me of year with so much colour from the blossoms and other plants that adorn this wonderful garden. It would be good to visit again in the Summer to view the roses and other species that will come into flower later on. ABer lunch in the grounds we had another wander around to soak up the atmosphere of this garden.

Thank you to David for his excellent guided tour and maybe we can visit again during another Season, as I am sure the garden will look en rely different. Nearer to home we visited the garden of Club member Beverly Monteith and husband Merrick. Now here we have two real plant enthusiasts, who made us very welcome to their stunning garden in the Darfield township. Started in 2010 this area has everything a Canterbury Spring garden excels in, rhododendrons and irises, with paeonies wai ng their turn to shine. The irises were in full bloom and there were many colours to catch the eye. I think the overall layout of the garden was what made it, with the beds and lawns laid out to flow easily and make it delighZul to wander through.

Everything was immaculate, not a weed in sight, this alone is no mean feat to achieve. ABernoon tea finished off the day with many members lingering in the sun cha ng and enjoying the garden and the company. Busy mes ahead in the garden, but do enjoy as well, stop and smell the roses!

Selwyn District Council’s Annual Report for 2015/16 confirms that the district enjoyed another busy and prosperous year, with new subdivisions, business land and shops being developed and the Council focussing on future planning, improving infrastructure and adding to residents’ quality of life. The report was adopted by the Council at a meeting last week.

“The numbers in our annual report confirm that Selwyn is the best place in the country to live,” commented Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton.

Broughton “We knew that and more and more people are moving here and finding out too,” Sam added.

The Council’s most recent independent Resident’s Survey found that 94% of Selwyn residents thought that the district was a great place to live, with respondents highlighting the positive atmosphere and environment, community spirit, friendly people, accessibility to urban services, and good facilities and amenities.

Building and construction activity continues to be strong in Selwyn. The value of nonresidential building consents in Selwyn grew by forty percent to reach $152 million for the year ending June 2016. The figures reflect the building of new schools in Rolleston, consents for new shops to be developed in Rolleston, West Melton and Darfield* and the continuing development of new businesses at Izone.

A total of 2,687 building consents were issued in Selwyn in the year to June 2016, with consents taking an average of eleven days to be processed.

The Council’s building team was also the first in New Zealand to be reaccredited as a Building Consent Authority three times, with no requirement for changes to existing practices or systems.

Council infrastructure and facilities are being upgraded for Selwyn’s growing population. A number of water supply upgrades were undertaken to add capacity in high growth areas and the first stage of a major stormwater upgrade in Leeston was started. Work started to develop a new cycleway between Coalgate and Glentunnel. Drainage improvements were completed on 140 kilometres of rural roads. Earthquake repairs to around 1,100 headstones in the district’s public cemeteries were also completed.

Future planning work was also a focus for the Council, which adopted area plans for Malvern and Ellesmere.

In December 2015, the Newcomers and Migrants Strategy was adopted. The strategy is a joint initiative involving central government, the Council and community organisations and sets out a range of actions to help support newcomers and migrants. The Council and Selwyn Youth Council hosted seventy four events for local residents and y o un g p e o p l e e na b l in g communities to connect.

Selwyn District Council’s financial performance for the year was strong. Expenditure for the year was $86.9 million, compared with the budget of $88.3 million.

Revenue was $148.9 million,

compared with the budget of $116.3 million. The main revenue variations were due to development co ntribution income being $8.3 million above budget and vested assets being valued at $11.7 million higher than the budget. Development contributions are contributions taken at the time of subdivision which are used to fund new parks and growth related costs. This funding cannot be used to subsidise rates. Vested assets are new infrastructure such as roads and footpaths which is transferred to the Council from new development areas. Vested assets do not generate income. The Council also received dividend income which was $4.7 million higher than budgeted. *The News received the following from Foodstuffs regarding Darfield’s supermarket/commercial development: “Both the Taege Family and Foodstuffs SI Ltd are looking forward to providing the township of Darfield with a staged supermarket and small shopping centre development.

The integrated commercial project will include some six retail tenancies, a Four Square supermarket linked to the adjacent open space areas and ample parking facing onto the State Highway. Consents for the development will soon be submitted to Council (this was on October 11th). The Four Square will be similar in design to that of the Four Square proposed at Lake Tekapo.”

The Sheffield Garden Club ventured out again on a beau ful Spring day, boarding a coach and travelling towards Windwhistle for our first stop.

‘The Point Sta on’ is owned by Teena and Stephen Richards and we arrived to find a beau ful morning tea laid on for us. Teena talked to us of the history of the house and farm and about living where weather plays a big part in your day to day life, with snow or gales. Neither of these were an issue on this day. The Rhododendrons and Azaleas put on a magnificent showing and, no doubt, the Mount Peel Lilies will do the same in the months to come.

ABer enjoying the vista of this lovely home and gardens we set off across the Rakaia Gorge towards Awa Awa Reserve, what a beau ful spot to enjoy our packed lunch with hundreds of Rhododendrons and Azaleas gleaming against the back drop of na ve bush and birdsong.

Our ‘Melbourne Cup Hat’ compe on created lots of laughs with the very obliging coach driver being coerced into judging for us and earning his lunch.

Our next port of call was Methven with a visit to the Museum to hear about the history of the area and also a few stories of Dawn’s early married life in this area.

A spot of shopping and a cup of coffee saw us all contented with our day’s excursion.

As we leB, the dark clouds were beginning to slide over the hilltops in our direc on. But the day had dealt us one out of the box, lovely sunshine and great companionship. Next month we are off to Homebush for our Christmas party.

Paddy and Mick were walking along a street in London .....

Paddy looked in one of the shop windows and saw a sign that caught his eyes. The sign read, "Suits £5.00 each, Shirts £2.00 each, trousers £2.50 per pair". Paddy said to his pal, "Mick look at the prices! We could buy a whole lot of dose and when we get back to Ireland we could make a fortune. Now when we go in you stay quiet, okay? Let me do all da talking cause if they hear our accents, they might think were thickos from Ireland and try to screw us. I'll put on my best English accent".

"Right y'are Paddy, I'll keep me mouth shut, so I will. You do all da business" said Mick.

They go in and Paddy said in a posh voice, "Hello my good man. I'll take 50 suits at £5.00 each, 100 shirts at £2.00 each, and 50 pairs of trousers at £2.50 each.. I'll back up me truck ready to load em on, so I will."

The owner of the shop said quietly, "You're from Ireland, aren't you?"

"Well yes," said a surprised Paddy. "What gave it away?"

The owner replied, "This is a dry-cleaners"!
