Lincoln Envirotown presented their first Responsible Business Awards to be competed for in the Malvern and West Melton areas. This was a landmark for these awards as they have now been conducted in all areas of Selwyn. The awards involved businesses being assessed for their sustainable practices and service to the community, as well as being helped and encouraged to make further improvements. Over 200 businesses throughout Selwyn have taken part since these were instituted.

At an awards gathering held in the Darfield recreational Centre, recipients got together to listen to guest speaker James Caygill, Caygill Manager of Regional Engagement (South Island) for Fonterra. James spoke about

It was also a chance for those present to meet the new Mayor Sam Broughton who presented the certificates and the first Malvern Responsible Business top award – the Fonterra Trophy.

There were numerous high awards granted, with the winning enterprise being Gr e en d a l e Sch o o l. T he assessor, Wendy Wild explained that the children of the school had impressed her with their clear vision and the goals they had for a sustainable future.

“To enter the Responsible Business Awards the enviro group children, Office Manager Fiona Banks, Banks Caretaker/Cleaner Sarah Busch and the Principal CareyCarey-Anne Hamilton completed a comprehensive survey early in term three about what we do at Greendale School to look after the environment and for sustainability,” said a School spokesperson.

“The assessor from the ‘Lincoln Enviro Trust’ interviewed the children at the end of last term

on all aspects of Greendale School, including things like p h o t o c o py i n g , c l e a n i n g supplies, rubbish recycling and more.

“Then last Tuesday Greendale Principal CareyCarey-Anne Hamilton along with a group of adults from the school community who are part of the enviro group attended the ‘Responsible Business Awards’ in Darfield.

“We won the Platinum award along with Melton Estate Winery (West Melton) and Springfield School. However we

were thrilled to also receive the overall award - the ‘Fonterra Business Awards Trophy’.

“It was all very exciting and to celebrate at School, we put on a special lunch for the enviro group and green-hearts gardening group children to say thanks and well done.

“A special treat was when Wendy (the assessor) visited with ice-creams for all the Greendale children to celebrate the win. Greendale School is very proud of the huge team effort to achieve this award.”

After the excitement of winning a Gold in the Responsible Business Awards last week, owner and staff of Darfield’s Greengrocers - Johnny Fresh, enjoyed another exciting event at the weekend.

To celebrate their first year in business the store offered their customers a complimentary barbecue (which smelt divine!), numerous in-store specials and the chance to go in the draw for a sizeable gift basket. For the younger members of the community there was the chance to take home a piece of fruit when submitting their colouring in competition entry and hope their colouring efforts would win a prize.

The annual CatchFitness 20Week Challenge finished six weeks ago and on Saturday finalists were announced and awards were presented. The Catch Fitness 20Week Challenge™ is about helping participants reach their health and fitness goals.

World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) takes place each year on October 20th. It is organised by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) to launch their bone health campaign for the coming year. This year the focus of their message is for the general public to take early action to protect their bone and muscle health, in order to enjoy a good quality of life and independence in the future. It also calls on health professionals and health authorities to prioritise osteoporosis and fracture prevention by ensuring that people at high-risk are assessed and appropriately treated.

The IOF have identified a ‘care gap’, highlighting that although there have been major advances in the ability to detect early signs of thinning bone mass and in the development of effective treatments, few ‘at risk’ individuals actually receive referrals for bone density scans from their doctor and hence, few receive treatment. In October every year, Darfield High School hosts a group of students from Kagoshima Junshin Girls’ High School. The students and accompanying teachers visit Darfield for approximately ten days, and stay with local host families.

Their programme includes spending time at school in classes with local students, as well as going on outings to places such as Akaroa,

Christchurch, and Rubicon Valley Farm. A particular highlight is always the excellent informative cultural performances they give to Darfield High School students.

This year students learnt about ninjas, pop fashion, Japanese primary schools, and funny animated characters.

This visit marks an important milestone in the relationship as it is the tenth year Kagoshima

Junshin Girls’ High School has visited Darfield. In commemoration, a Japanese cherry tree was planted outside the Darfield High School international office. Darfield High School look forward to the relationship continuing to grow and develop in the coming years, and they thank all the families and the local community who helped to host this wonderful group.

The 2016 event, on Saturday, will be no exception with a top line up of competitors set to challenge for championships across numerous events, including Olympic shot putter, Jacko Gill, Gill who will be competing in the Oceania Heavyweight Championship.

“I think my favourite event is going to be the Caber Toss, as it looks impressive when done correctly. However I have never Tossed a Caber in competition before, so it could be entertaining,” commented Jacko when asked about competing at his first Highland Games. “I think the throwing events will be my strength as many of them are the origins of what we now compete in at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.”

New to the event this year will be Bike Polo with a grudge match between Christchurch and Timaru for the Hororata Highland Games Bike Polo Championship. Also new is the Gough CAT Vehicle Pull which consists of a team of five pulling a ute and mini digger on a trailer from start to finish, with the chance to win $300 cash.

“Surrounding the competitions and demonstration events we have a huge festival with over one hundred market stalls, entertainment, fairground rides and much more. We have introduced the Duncan Cotterill Stage which will see some great entertainment like the Hororata Pie Eating competition, Southern Celtic Fiddle Orchestra, and Ma Bell and The Celtic Connection. Taste of Scotland is a wonderful experience with food, wine, Scottish wares,

tartan and, of course, Haggis to enjoy. In Clan Lane people can connect or discover their Scottish roots. If you have any specific questions about your ancestry the Clans will more than likely be able to find an answer,” explained Event Manager, Cindy Driscoll.

“With a great turnout, the day went amazingly well,” said event coordinator Nicky Fairbairn.

“The boutique Fete had a wonderful feel and we received lots of positive feedback. The

Ribblesdale (the Fete’s location) gardens really were stunning,” Nicky added. “There were many families in attendance and the children had fun with Wee Dram Farm Park and pony rides, while the fairy face painting was also very popular. Top quality trade and

Hororata’s Brogan Baldwin has achieved the two highest awards in Scouting, and is only seventeen years old. She was Hororata’s first ever female Chief Scout two years ago and now she is Hororata’s first ever Queen Scout and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award recipient.

Brogan is modest about her achievements but her Mother, Annmarie Baldwin is understandably proud and commented that, “Brogan has done the hard yards and I, along with her Scout Leader, both agree that it is lovely for her achievements to be recognised.”

Brogan had this to say to the News when asked how she began her journey to Gold: “In 2013 my brother and I were invited to join two friends, Eliza Grigg and Hannah Oakley, Oakley on their Gold Duke of Edinburgh tramps through the Queen Charlotte Sound. This was to be my first overnight tramp, and four days of it was bit of a shock! When I talked about it with our Scout Leader, David Grafton, Grafton he pointed out that this could work as the qualifying tramp for both my Chief Scout, and if I started immediately, my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DoE). With Dave’s coordination I was quickly enrolled in the Duke of Ed. scheme and on my way to finishing the Chief Scout Award. Being quite young and in the company of people at least three years older than me, this tramp was one of the biggest challenges I have faced, both mentally and physically.

However it set me on the road to the DoE/Hillary Award and Queen’s Scout Award - and any hardship to follow later!

So with a bronze tramp out of the way early in the piece it just remained to carry on with the three main tasks: A sport, a skill and some service. All relatively easy after what Queen Charlotte Sound had thrown at me. I realised also that getting the tramp out of the way early worked for me and as I progressed through the Silver and Gold challenges, I used the same formula. I would definitely recommend that to anyone else considering the same challenge.

In my eyes, the activities I took part in weren’t difficult because I enjoyed every one of them. I was privileged to work alongside, and learn from, leaders, experts and a new side of the community for me. Due to the fact the Queen’s Scout and Gold Duke have much in common, planning was key.

This was perhaps the most difficult aspect; timing activities

and events such that I could fit them in with school (which had to come first), and stay within the timeframe of both awards.

As well as which the written work for modules was immense.

Without the community who so closely supported me I may never have been able to raise funds for activities, complete modules and reach my goals. I was required to plan and report on each of my tramps for D of E and Queen’s Scout and present a CV of my ten year Scouting journey which led me to sit before a panel of interviewers who would assess the standard of my efforts. Leading up to this point I learned something important; it takes a village to raise a child.

I am proud and maybe a whole lot relieved that I have finished now, but the receiving of these lovely certificates is nothing as great as the awesome tramps I have been on and experiences I have had to gain them. And to the village who helped raise me Thank you. “

In June 2016 a new charity was set-up by Rolleston local Christina Buckland and her friend Joy Reid (a TVNZ journalist). The initiative called ‘From One Mother to Another’, provides gift bags to distressed Mums and Caregivers who find themselves in the Children's Acute Assessment Unit (CAA) at Christchurch Hospital. The concept has taken off, with the packing of another four hundred gift bags planned over the coming weeks to ensure every Mother through the unit over Christmas, receives a pack.

“We also want to provide extra bags to Mums and Carers in the Children's Haematology Oncology Centre ward,” the pair added.

“The concept was born in April when my doctor rushed me and my daughter Arabelle to the CAA ward,” Christina recalled. “It was a stressful, emotional and difficult day. Even though the staff were truly amazing, it was a rather scary and uncertain place to be. While in the unit, Arabelle was given an age appropriate 'goodie' bag full of things to entertain her. It was a little ray of light in her world that morning,” Christina added.

“It gave me the idea to put a pack together for Mums and Carers in an effort to encourage and improve their day too. I self funded the first ten packs, then a few friends contributed and now we have the support of many local businesses. We have had the most amazing feedback from the ward staff.”

The pair now supply around fifty packs per month to the staff at the CAA ward who then give out the packs to those Mothers and Carers who they feel need some encouragement. “It’s usually those who are under a lot of stress/ pressure or those with very young babies,” Christina explained.

“Each pack is filled with wonderful goodies, some are practical and some are purely indulgent.”

Items in the packs have either been generously donated from businesses, purchased using donations, or are beautifully hand made goods.

“We recently held a fundraiser which raised more than

On Saturday October 29th, the annual Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge Mountain Running Race was held at the Ferguson Family’s Baldoon Farm in the foot hills between Sheffield and Springfield.

With a predicted southerly front moving up the South Island late Friday, organisers were preparing for a challenging day and possible postponement or, at best, delaying the start time, scheduled for 10am.

On the morning of the race it was raining in Christchurch and snowing in Arthur’s Pass, with snow having fallen and settled on the summit of Bell Hill.

Fortunately there were breaks in the weather and very little wind.

However it was cold, but after consideration organisers decided it would be safe to start the event, as scheduled. Race Director Chris Cox said there was a lot of discussion, a full assessment was made and it was agreed that it would be safe to hold the event in the cold conditions. There were constant reminders broadcast as competitors arrived reminding them to carry full warm-up gear “This is a mountain race after

all,” Chris said, “and with very little wind, there was no increased danger of wind chill.

“Two hundred competitors lined up for the mass start of runners competing the eighteen kilometre loop, and fitness walkers completing a twelve kilometre loop on the same course.

“First runners to the Bell Hill summit were David Fitch and Sam Bell, Bell closely followed by Nathan Peterson.

Peterson First woman to the summit was Georgia Whitla.

Whitla Nathan, who competed in last year’s Coast-to-Coast, and known for his ability to descend over rough country, proved his ability to be able to handle the snow and rocky underfoot conditions, passing David and Sam in the early stages of the descent. David and Sam used their strength and endurance over longer distances to pass Nathan before the ten kilometre mark at the Dalethorpe Saddle Walk Event turn-off. David and Sam raced together for the rest of the course, continually challenging each other, with David pulling away over the last 400 metres in an exciting finish to claim the title.

“Georgia Whitla was always well clear of the rest of the women’s field with second placed Claire Bell closing in over the final stages to finish six minutes behind women’s champion Georgia. A further two minutes back behind Claire was Megan Murdoch.”

Fortunately the weather did not deteriorate again until the closing stages of the race when intermittent hail and rain storms moved across the area as the last competitors were finishing.

Race Director Chris Cox commented, “luck was on our side this year and fortunately we did not have to make last minute changes to the course in deference to snow or hail. We always knew we could safely hold a mountain running race of this type, in this area, in challenging weather conditions.

We proved ourselves to be right this year.

“Everyone came away having experienced a great day in the hills with a sens e of achievement from having climbed this very prominent hill behind Sheffield.”

The Malvern Cancer Support Group is one of the Cancer Society’s longest established voluntary groups. The small group of Cancer Society trained volunteers provide assistance and support to people in the Malvern area who have had a diagnosis of cancer.

“My name is Vicki and I was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2014. Following surgery in December, I spent several months receiving chemotherapy and radiation in 2015. The Cancer Society provided me with much appreciated petrol vouchers for the extra travelling required to get to treatment. I also received regular phone calls checking how I was going. These not only came from local volunteers but also from Ashburton based Annie Bonifant.

“I attended, ‘Look Good Feel Better’ - a wonderful event where we got our makeup done, along with a free bag of makeup products. It was an

opportunity to share our experiences with other people in the same position. Annie and her team also treated us to a really scrummy and much enjoyed, lunch.

“The Darfield Cancer Support Group gave our family some delicious baking at Christmas time. I was pleasantly surprised when I received so much support from the Cancer Support Group in Darfield and from further afield.

“Now recovered, I feel it is important that I give back to the Cancer Support community, returning that same kindness to anyone who is going through the cancer journey,” Vicki ended.

Another recipient of the Malvern Cancer Support Group’s support, Karen, Karen commented; “over three years ago I was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. It was a huge shock to me and my immediate family. I had been under the care of a surgeon in private

practice, but it was my doctor in Christchurch who referred me to Christchurch Women’s Hospital for further tests. I am so thankful that my doctor had listened to me and acted straight away. I am one of the lucky ones who did not require further treatment other than surgery to remove the tumour.

“It is a direct result of my experience that I decided to join the local Cancer Support Group. This group, ably led by Elaine Guy, Guy welcomed me and I am enjoying very much the opportunity to give back to the community, who I know would have been there for me had I required it. The Malvern Community is lucky to have such a wonderful group of locals who have, over a long period, given freely of their time to either fundraise, bake, drive or support cancer patients and their families,” Karen concluded.

Fireworks 2016 will be held this year on Saturday, November 5th at the new location of Foster Park, Broadlands Drive, Rolleston.

The evening starts from 5pm if wet the event will take place on Sunday, November 6th.

The change to the larger venue was dictated by the ever increasing popularity of the event, the larger numbers of people attending, and the fact that in the next year or two the existing location at Rolleston Reserve will be taken up by the new Rolleston Town Centre . Another advantage at Foster Park is the larger firing and fall out zone for the fireworks’ operator.

The event is organised by a subcommittee aligned to the Rolleston Residents Association and comprises members of the Rolleston Reserve Management Committee, user groups, sports clubs, schools etc.

The Selwyn District Council events’ fund contributes $2,500 and assists with the

road closure documentation and costs. Pub Charity has been a regular supporter over the last few years with a regular donation of $15,000.

The committee has been chaired by Jens Christensen for the eighteen years that the event, in its current form, has been running. It is now an iconic event on the Selwyn District calendar and a recognised fund raiser for the groups providing food and entertainment on the night.

The night could not run without the entry fees of $10 per family or $5 per person, as the costs to run it are in the vicinity of $50,000.

“The usual entertainments will

be on tap this year, along with a variety of food outlets, so come along and enjoy a night of fun, food and entertainment in a family atmosphere,” Jens said. “But sorry, no dogs, alcohol or glass allowed,” he added.

As summer approaches, properties connected to Council water supplies are being encouraged to adjust when they water their lawns.

“Rainfall has also been low in 2016, so ground water levels have not had the opportunity to recharge well over winter - an issue which affects the wider Canterbury Region and means there are likely to be constraints in place on how much water can be used over summer. While rainfall in October has been moderate this has not had a noticeable effect on groundwater levels,” commented Murray England, England Selwyn District Council’s Asset Manager Water Services.

“During summer water supplies are also placed under pressure as many people decide to water their lawns and gardens at the same time in the evenings.

Demand is particularly high at the weekends in the evenings.”

So that local households continue to experience consistent water pressure over summer and to help conserve water, the Council is asking residents on Council water supplies to try to avoid watering lawns between 6am9am and 4pm-9pm daily. These

are times when households use the most water. While at this stage, the Council has not introduced formal water restrictions, the recommended times to avoid watering are the same as for the first level of water restrictions (Level 1).

The Council is recommending that, where possible, people water lawns between 10pm and 6am when demand for water is lowest and water has the opportunity to soak into the ground.

“People may also decide to let their lawns go brown over summer or to water less if their lawn is established. In many areas like Rolleston and West Melton where water meters operate choosing to use less water will result in people paying less in water charges,” Murray said.

If you are considering watering your lawn between 9am and 4pm the Council recommends you check the weather conditions first and avoid watering in hot or windy

conditions when water will evaporate, and instead choose a cooler or overcast day.

Since 2015, Rolleston, Prebbleton, Lincoln and West Melton have all had new bores added to supply these areas.

Two new wells have been added in Rolleston – one of which was recently commissioned and the other is expected to be operational in December. A new deep well has been drilled at Edendale to replace the existing well, as dropping groundwater levels indicated the bore would soon go dry. In Leeston and Doyleston, upgraded pipework, more tank storage, a well upgrade and new high capacity pump are providing more water capacity.

If demand for water increases over summer then mandatory water restrictions may be introduced requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. Summer w a t e r r es t r ic ti ons a r e commonly used in New Zealand as a way to manage demand for water.

One of the Club’s early season competitions is for the President’s Trophy. This was held on of October 1st, and with a good turnout of Club members, eight teams were able to compete. Derrol Fitzgibbon, Fitzgibbon Terry Butland and Mark Dobbin were undefeated with three wins to secure the Trophy for 2016.

On October 8th, West Melton travelled to Darfield to play for the Mitchell Cup. Competition was intense as the results show. Six games each, sixty ends each, and the Cup was decided on the differential which went in Darfield’s favour.

Pre-Christmas competitions for the men include Centre 7’s, 3 x 3’s and 2 x 4’s which are played on Saturday mornings.

Malvern 5’s is played on Saturday afternoons. On the West Melton Club night, which is Wednesday, the Club Triples are played.

West Melton ladies have entered teams for the Roundtree Cup, which is a Centre competition, the Malvern 5’s and on Tuesday nights are playing their Open Club Singles.
