From the Waimakariri River in Canterbury, on to the Waiau, Rakaia, Waitaki, Matukituki, Clutha and Dart, to the Kawarau/ Shotover River in Queenstown the week long NZ Jet Boat Marathon took place on October 15th until the 22nd. A gruelling race of time trials and accuracy with clean river runs saw locals Wayne Boyes along with navigator Mark Moore and support crew David Mitchell, Dean Frew, Charlie Buttle and Alastair Taylor finish third place in the CX Class, also winning ‘Best Turn Out of Boat and Crew.’ “It was a huge experience to finish the NZ Marathon, and the first I’ve competed in,” Wayne (Brick) commented. “The World Marathon in 2017 will be on the same rivers, and definitely something to work towards,” he added. I was really fortunate to have so me o utstand ing sponsors and would like to thank them for their much
appreciated support. Without them we wouldn't have been able to make this happen. Equally worthy of thanks is my crew who worked very hard to keep the boat going, and I am extremely grateful for their assistance and expertise. We had a strong motor which was prepared and installed by Steve and Geoff from Hartz Marine and this proved to be extremely reliable, with just the one DNF (did not finish) on the Waitaki River. Along the way we had to do a bit of pushing from time to time, but even after this experience Mark (my amazing navigator) and I, can't wait for the Worlds next year. “It is an extremely punishing sport,” Wayne added. On the sixteenth and final leg there were only six boats still eligible for overall placings, and only a 25 kilometre leg on the Shotover to race; only three of those boats finished,” Wayne said. “The sideline supporters were also amazing - spurring us on at every stage,” he concluded. Kirwee’s Jenny Gallagher has just returned from Wellington after being presented with her Queen’s Service Medal. She received her award at a special ceremony held at Government House on Tuesday, October 18th. The medal was presented by the Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy. Reddy Jenny had her family in attendance, her two sons over from Australia, along wit h her da ughter, t wo grandchildren and husband Terry Gallagher from Kirwee. “I was made to feel very special on the night. Dame Patsy is a very personable lady and my family and I had the honour of meeting her personally after the ceremony,” Jenny added. Jenny has lived in the area all her life and has just been re-elected to the Malvern Community Board having served as its Chair prior.

We managed to climb into fifth place on the second to last day and were holding third in A Class. The boat was
performing well with no groundings or river issues so all was looking great with an eighteen minute lead over sixth place. The fourth place holder was twenty minutes ahead. Unfortunately we found a harmonic balancer failure causing us to pull out of the last days’ racing. With our total time we held the third place in A Class, but slipped back to twelfth overall. We intend being part of the 2017 World Jet Boat Marathon next year on the same course as this,” Gareth finished.

Almost $600 was raised from the Mulch Sale run by Brandon Heslop of Tailored Trees at the Darfield Preschool and Nursery, last Saturday. As Utes and Trailers took advantage of the initiative, those that missed it were already asking on social media when the next one would be! “There was a good turn out of folk from Darfield and Kirwee,” commented Brandon, “and we got rid of all the mulch in a little over and hour and a half! “This fundraiser was just to test the water for demand,” Brandon added, “and depending on mulch supplies we may get another sale in before Christmas. Failing that we’ll have a much larger event in the new year - as I know folk have been enquiring.” Darfield Preschool and Nursery manager Clare Clatworthy commented to Brandon that she knew the children would really appreciate all the time and effort he and his business had put into the fundraiser. “Brandon joined the Board of Trustees of the Darfield Preschool and Nursery in July and has been a great asset,” said Jane Thwaites (BOT Chair). “It’s fantastic that a local business is prepared to help us fundraise,” she added. “The money raised from the mulch sale will go towards our vege garden and making a petrol pump for our much used and enjoyed bike track.”

With warmer weather and holiday periods fast approaching the roads in the Selwyn District will become increasingly busy in the very the near future. In particular a long weekend always brings an increase in traffic volumes, with more motorists driving for longer periods than usual and many also towing boats, caravans and trailers. When planning to head off for a break always allow enough time to get to the destination, drive with patience and avoid taking unnecessary risks. If towing, the maximum speed limit on the open road is 90 kph. Keep left and pull over when it is safe to let other vehicles pass. Keep a safe following distance between the vehicle in front this gives enough distance should the vehicle in front of
stop suddenly. Early indication of a driver’s intentions to turn, change lanes or pull over is essential and can help to avoid a crash. When planning a journey, work out how long it will take to get to the destination. Driving for longer periods than normal can be tiring and it is important to recognise the signs of tiredness early. There are simple ways to avoid fatigue and improve alertness when travelling: • Get plenty of sleep before the journey, and try to drive at times when normally awake • Always stay hydrated while driving and have light snacks • Plan for rest breaks from driving every couple of hours. Get out of the vehicle and even take a short walk to improve alertness. If a driver is feeling
really tired, take a short nap, or if possible, share the driving. Listening to music, drinking coffee or using the air conditioning while driving, can help keep with alertness, but are generally only temporary solutions. Rest or sleep is the best solution to fatigue. Watch out for the Fatigue leaflet which will be distributed in the Malvern area next week. There will be 500 leaflets, all with their own unique number. Have a read and keep it on the fridge as there will be a prize draw in the Malvern News on November 18th. Anyone who has one of the five numbers drawn, can claim a prize by contacting the Road Safety Co-ordinator at Selwyn District Council. Winners will need to produce the leaflet to claim their prize.

The Darfield ITM and Darfield Rugby Club’s annual Fishing competition took place last weekend at Haldon Arm, Lake Benmore and attracted more participants than ever before. It started off with a few of the old faithful turning up on the Thursday Night to get their camp sites ready, then sit around talking about the ones they were going to catch. Unfortunately even the arrival led to a few minor mishaps especially for one of the organisers, Craig Millar. Millar Craig was awarded the coveted Dick and Trout award this year for the biggest mishap of the weekend. It resulted from him running into a mob of sheep on a blind corner, leaving a few being accidently prepared for the freezer. Although Craig protested that there were a few other misfortunes that people had had to combat; such as kiddy door locks, and fishing nets with minds of their own, as well as missing reading glasses that allowed one person to

The Darfield Bridge Club were pleased to be able to give a donation to Malvern St John last week, in recognition of the valuable service they give to the district. The money donated comes from the Club’s successful bridge tournament run recently. Players from Amberley to Ashburton came to Darfield to play bridge and they gave tremendous support to the undisputedly, gloriously laden, raffle table. All in the interest of a very good cause and possible through the assistance of local retailers and dedicated Club members.

SEASON HAS STARTED !!! The fly and spider season is well underway. The warmer weather has white tail spiders out and about and of course many people calling us to help them with these unpleasant squa=ers in their homes. These guys are nocturnal and are normally only seen during the day if they are disturbed. Perhaps when dying drawers or wardrobes. If you have lived in a house that had whitetails and you have moved houses you will have more than likely taken them with you, to your new home. The treatment we use controls spiders and flies, it doesn't kill them instantly (as anything that potent would be dangerous to the occupants of the house). It takes three to four hours to shut down the nervous system of a whitetail. Some mes aWer treatment owners are astounded to see a whitetail they never knew they had, on the carpet or out on the wall unable to move. This is the nervous system shu ng down and the spider is unable to get back to cover. Mostly they are just found dead under a couch, or behind a wardrobe. The best me to see if you have whitetails is if you get up in the night, look along the edges of the skir ng, or along the top of the wall. If you have the old style down lights they can quite oWen be seen on the ceiling near these, as they can come through from the roof space. Darfield St John Youth Division were proud to see two of their cadets attend a selection camp for national competitions. This was held the weekend of October 15th at Waddington and their bid was to make the South Island Regional Representative Squad. the Vicar’s Award went to Toby Driscoll, a school new entrant. Thirteen family teams lined up for ‘The Great Race’, with speed not always being the winning ingredient! The three challenge bays well and truly tested puzzle solving skills. The free children’s races drew a big crowd, with parents and grandparents cheering on their kids in the sack races, egg and spoon, or the gumboot toss. The Spring Fair welcomed Pedalmania this year and it was decided that it had to be the most fun on two wheels! Bikes that go sideways, pedals that go backwards and best of all the experience was able to be offered free thanks to the Malvern Lions Club. The country auction saw some fierce bidding on some selected items. A very old tricycle went to a great home (and garden), a pure wool blanket will doubtless be treasured and many families found bargains for their house or garden. The Parish barbecue; bacon sammies and hamburgers were, as always, very popular. Accompanied by great coffee, and music by Bruce Leeming and singer Emma Sparey it made a winning combination in the Spring sunshine, setting the scene for a relaxing family day. The stall holders emphasis on local produce fitted in well with supporting the overarching focus on families. “What a lovely local Fair, not too commercial and would definitely come again,” was the sentiment of many that voiced their feedback. “The community really pulled together to create an extraordinary, fun, family, day. Good spirits, friendly punters, quality stalls and fantastic auctioneers. A big thanks to all the volunteers who make this such a great day,” ended Rev. Jenni Carter. Carter

The Kirwee Tennis Club celebrated its 130th Jubilee on Labour Weekend, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd October and a great time was had by all. The Tennis Club, first formed on October 1st 1886 and is one of the oldest tennis clubs in New Zealand. The Club were also celebrating fifty years of Kirwee versus Paroa, home and away games. Paroa is on the West Coast and close to Shantytown. Last Sunday pupils from the Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio took to the stage in the Sheffield Community Hall to demonstrate to family and friends just what they can do and what they’ve been learning in classes. This follows the receipt of their examination results - which were outstanding. Tara’s students sat their NZAMD (NZ Association of Modern Dance) annual exams for the year after two full days of examining (adjudicated by Miss Lester of the North Island) in August. Over sixty pupils sat their exams this year in Jazz, Hip Hop and Contemporary dance with some students sitting all three exams. When the results came in it was jubilation all round especially for thirteen students who scored an impressive ‘Distinction’ rating which meant they had achieved marks of between 95 100%. Not only was Tara’s pupil Jade Collier extremely pleased with her examination result, but even more so when she was nominated to the NZAMD scholarship awards to be held in Wellington at the end of this month.
